- LifeSketch: ..... Cadwallon sent an advance party to Britain to rally his men and those of the other British kingdoms, while he prepared a Breton invasion force. The advance guard landed in Dumnonia, but were immediately caught up in a Mercian siege of Caer-Uisc (Exeter). King Clemen was, thus, in no position to help the Gwynedd cause. However, Cadwallon soon arrived with his army and crushed the Mercians, forcing their King, Penda, into a mutual anti-Northumbrian alliance, sealed by Cadwallon's marriage to Penda's sister, Alcfrith. Together, they marched north to regain Gwynedd at the Battle of Cefn Digoll (Long Mountain near Welshpool). They did not stop there, however, and hounded the Northumbrians back to their own kingdom. Here they wreaked revenge on the Northern Angles, burning York, sacking Yeavering (Ad Gefrin) and butchering Northumbrians as they went. So savagely did Cadwallon treat them that the Northern Angles thought they were all to be exterminated. Edwin was finally killed at the Battle of Meicen (Hatfield Chase) in AD 633, but this did not entice Cadwallon to leave Northumbria. Edwin's cousin, Osric, managed to rally the Nothumbrian troops and besieged the King of Gwynedd at York. Cadwallon, however, broke out, caught Osric unawares and destroyed his entire army. Aethelfrith of Bernicia's son, Enfrith, then returned from Pictland and tried to negotiate peace with Cadwallon. The King would have none of it though and Enfrith was also slain. Within a year, however, Enfrith's half-brother, Oswald, marched south from his exile in Scottish Dalriada and encountered Cadwallon at Catscaul or "Cad-ys-gual", the Battle of the Wall (Heavenfield, near Hexham). Here Cadwallon died. Conflicting evidence suggests he may have survived the battle and died in AD659, though this is unlikely. Tradition says he was buried beneath the Ludgate of Caer Londein, where he still occasionally held court over both Britons and Saxons. A mounted statue of him is said to have been raised upon its top. His son, Cadwaladr Fendigaid, being only about a year old, the throne was seized by one Cadfael ap Cynfeddw. BIO: from http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLAND,%20AngloSaxon%20&%20Danish%20Kings.htm#EcgberhtKentdied673B daughter . Roger of Wendover records that the mother of "rex Britonum Cadwallo…Cadwaladrus filius eius…juvenem" was "soror Pendæ regis Merciorum" whom Cadwallon married after his alliance with King Penda[457]. However, the passage in this source is confused as it also records the death of King Cadwallon senior in 676. m CADWALLON ap Cadfan King of Gwynedd, son of CADFAN ap Iago & his wife --- (-killed in battle Denisesburn [635]). He joined forces with Penda King of Mercia against Eadwine King of Northumbria at Hatfield Chase in 633.

- LifeSketch: https://www.myheritage.com/research/record-1-436580281-2-1852/godiva-godgifugodgyfu-of-mercia-born-countess-of-mercia-in-myheritage-family-trees Godiva, Countess of Mercia (/ɡəˈdaɪvə/; died between 1066 and 1086), in Old English Godgifu, was an English noblewoman who, according to a legend dating at least to the 13th century, rode naked – covered only in her long hair – through the streets of Coventry to gain a remission of the oppressive taxation that her husband imposed on his tenants. The name "Peeping Tom" for a voyeur originates from later versions of this legend in which a man named Thomas watched her ride and was struck blind or dead. Godiva was the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia. They had one known son, Aelfgar.[2][3][4][5][6] Godiva's name occurs in charters and the Domesday survey, though the spelling varies. The Old English name Godgifu or Godgyfu meant "gift of God"; Godiva was the Latinised form. Since the name was a popular one, there are contemporaries of the same name.[6][7] If she is the same Godiva who appears in the history of Ely Abbey, the Liber Eliensis, written at the end of the 12th century, then she was a widow when Leofric married her. Both Leofric and Godiva were generous benefactors to religious houses. In 1043 Leofric founded and endowed a Benedictine monastery at Coventry[8] on the site of a nunnery destroyed by the Danes in 1016. Writing in the 12th century, Roger of Wendover credits Godiva as the persuasive force behind this act. In the 1050s, her name is coupled with that of her husband on a grant of land to the monastery of St. Mary, Worcester and the endowment of the minster at Stow St Mary, Lincolnshire.[9][10][11] She and her husband are commemorated as benefactors of other monasteries at Leominster, Chester, Much Wenlock, and Evesham.[12] She gave Coventry a number of works in precious metal by the famous goldsmith Mannig and bequeathed a necklace valued at 100 marks of silver.[13] Another necklace went to Evesham, to be hung around the figure of the Virgin accompanying the life-size gold and silver rood she and her husband gave, and St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London received a gold-fringed chasuble.[14] She and her husband were among the most munificent of the several large Anglo-Saxon donors of the last decades before the Norman Conquest; the early Norman bishops made short work of their gifts, carrying them off to Normandy or melting them down for bullion.[15] 19th-century equestrian statue of the legendary ride, by John Thomas, Maidstone Museum, Kent The manor of Woolhope in Herefordshire, along with four others, was given to the cathedral at Hereford before the Norman Conquest by the benefactresses Wulviva and Godiva – usually held to be this Godiva and her sister. The church there has a 20th-century stained glass window representing them.[16] Her signature, Ego Godiva Comitissa diu istud desideravi [I, The Countess Godiva, have desired this for a long time], appears on a charter purportedly given by Thorold of Bucknall to the Benedictine monastery of Spalding. However, this charter is considered spurious by many historians.[17] Even so, it is possible that Thorold, who appears in the Domesday Book as sheriff of Lincolnshire, was her brother. (See Lucy of Bolingbroke.) After Leofric's death in 1057, his widow lived on until sometime between the Norman Conquest of 1066 and 1086. She is mentioned in the Domesday survey as one of the few Anglo-Saxons and the only woman to remain a major landholder shortly after the conquest. By the time of this great survey in 1086, Godiva had died, but her former lands are listed, although now held by others.[18] Thus, Godiva apparently died between 1066 and 1086.[7] The place where Godiva was buried has been a matter of debate. According to the Chronicon Abbatiae de Evesham, or Evesham Chronicle, she was buried at the Church of the Blessed Trinity at Evesham, which is no longer standing. According to the account in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, "There is no reason to doubt that she was buried with her husband at Coventry, despite the assertion of the Evesham chronicle that she lay in Holy Trinity, Evesham."[7] William Dugdale (1656) says that a window with representations of Leofric and Godiva was placed in Trinity Church, Coventry, about the time of Richard

- Father: Charibert l King of The Franks at Paris
- Mother: Ingoberga of Paris
- Birth: BET 560 AND 565, Kingdom of Neustria, Frankish Empire
- Title Of Nobility: Queen of Kent
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Saint Bertha or Saint Aldeberge (c. 565 – d. in or after 601) was the queen of Kent whose influence led to the Christianization of Anglo-Saxon England. She was canonized as a saint for her role in its establishment during that period of English history. Life Bertha was a Frankish princess, the daughter of Charibert I and his wife Ingoberga, granddaughter of the reigning King Chlothar I and great-granddaughter of Clovis I and Saint Clotilde. Her father died in 567, her mother in 589. Bertha had been raised near Tours. Her marriage to the pagan Æthelberht of Kent, in 580 AD, was on condition that she be allowed to practice her religion. She brought her chaplain, Liudhard, with her to England. A former Roman church was restored for Bertha just outside the City of Canterbury, and dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. It was the private chapel of Queen Bertha before Augustine arrived from Rome. The present St Martin's Church continues on the same site, incorporating Roman walling of the original church in the chancel. It is acknowledged by UNESCO as the oldest church in the English-speaking world where Christian worship has taken place continuously since 580 AD. St Martin's (with Canterbury Cathedral and St Augustine's Abbey) make up Canterbury's UNESCO World Heritage site. Pope Gregory the Great sent a Mission led by Augustine of Canterbury, to restore Christianity to England in 596. The Mission's favourable reception upon arrival in 597 AD owed much to the influence of Bertha. Without her support and Æthelberht's good will, monastic settlements and the cathedral would likely have been developed elsewhere. In 601, Pope Gregory addressed a letter to Bertha, in which he complimented her highly on her faith and knowledge of letters. Anglo-Saxon records indicate that Saint Bertha had two children: . Eadbald of Kent, and . Æthelburg of Kent. She is named in the genealogies of various of the medieval accounts of the 'Kentish Royal Legend'. The date of her death (possibly 606) is disputed. Legacy The city of Canterbury celebrates Queen Bertha in many ways. The Bertha trail, consisting of 14 bronze plaques set in pavements, runs from the Buttermarket to St Martin's church via Lady Wootton's Green. In 2006, bronze statues of Bertha and Ethelbert were installed on Lady Wootton's Green as part of the Canterbury Commemoration Society's "Ethelbert and Bertha" project There is a wooden statue of Bertha inside St Martin's church. *************************** Foundation for Medieval Genealogy Parents of Bertha - 560 King Charibert & his first wife had one child: a) BERTA ([before 560]-[601/before 616], bur Canterbury, Church of St Peter and St Paul). Gregory of Tours records that the daughter of King Charibert and Ingoberg "eventually married a man from Kent and went to live there". Bede records that "rex Aedilberct in Cantia" had "uxorem…Christianam de gente Francorum regia…Bercta" whom he had received "a parentibus" on condition she retained her religion. It is reasonable to assume that Berta was born before 560, given the subsequent marital history of her father, who died in 567 having married three times after repudiating his first wife, although it is possible that some if not all of his marriages were polygamous. Kirby suggests that Berta's marriage took place in 580 after analysing the various contradictory chronological indications in contemporary sources. According to Bede, as noted above, King Æthelberht received Bertha "a parentibus". As her father died in 567, and her mother in 589, this appears to mean that she married before 567 if taken literally, which seems unlikely. The word "parents" may in this context mean "relatives" more broadly. Already a Christian when she came to England, she was accompanied by Liudhard, a Frankish bishop, although if he attempted to convert her husband his efforts must have been unsuccessful in view of the later conversion of King Æthelberht by St Augustine. Queen Berta is named in Pope Gregory I's letter of 601 to her husband. Bede records the burial of "Aedilbert tex Cantuariorum" in "portico sancti Martini intro ecclesiam beatorum apostolorum Petri et Pauli" stating that this was where "Berctæ regina" was buried. m (580) as his first wife, ÆTHELBERHT King of Kent, son of EORMENRIC King of Kent & his wife --- (after [550]-24 Feb 616, bur Canterbury, Church of St Peter and St Paul. .

- Father: Chlothar II King of NEUSTRIA
- Mother: Adeltrudis OF SOISSONS
- Birth: ABT 605, Kingdom of Neustria, Gaul, Frankish Empire
- Also known as: Emma of Austrasia
- Title Of Nobility: Princess of the Franks
- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy EMMA . "Emma Francorum regis filia et regis Eadbaldi copula" subscribed her husband's 618 charter. Although Emma seems an unlikely name for a Merovingian princess, given the more complex names which are typical of the family, Settipani suggests that it is the diminutive of a name containing a root similar to "Ermen-", like Ermenberga or Ermentrudis, which would also provide an explanation for the root "Eormen-" in the name of her son. Stenton says there seems no doubt that Eadbald's second wife belonged to the Frankish royal house but that her parentage has not been ascertained. Werner suggests that she was the daughter of Erchinoald, maior domus of Neustria, as the name root "Eorcen-" (similar to "Erchin-") was used among her descendants. Settipani identifies Emma's parents as shown here, seemingly because he eliminates all other possible couples from the known members of the Merovingian royal family from a chronological viewpoint. He prefers a Merovingian ancestry to explain the name "Hlothhere" given to Emma's grandson, similar to "Chlothachar" or "Clotaire", the name of Emma's supposed father. m (after 618) as his second wife, EADBALD King of Kent, son of ÆTHELBERHT King of Kent & his first wife Berta of the Franks (-20 Jan 640). _______________________________________________ Emma (fl. early seventh century) was a member of the Austrasian royal family. She is sometimes identified with the Emma (or Ymma) who married Eadbald of Kent. Emma was a daughter of Theudebert II, King of Austrasia from 595 to 612. He had previously shown little interest in the Kingdom of Kent, but Gregory the Great had written to him in 601, encouraging him to back Paulinus and Mellitus' missionary campaign, which was to be based in Canterbury. In 616, Eadbald came to the throne of Kent. His mother appears to have been Bertha, a Merovingian princess. He came to throne following traditional Germanic religion, but was converted and gave up his first wife who, as his stepmother, was not considered acceptable by the Christian church. This development appears to have initiated closer relations between Kent and the Frankish kingdom. Eadbald made a second marriage, to a Christian named Emma, who is identified in the annals of St Augustine's Abbey as the daughter of a Frankish king - implying Emma, daughter of Theudebert. However, S. E. Kelly, writing in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, holds that the belief that Eadbald married a daughter of Theudebert is the result of confusion between him and Adaloald, King of the Lombards. Kelly gives more credence to a suggestion that Eadbald's wife was the daughter of Erchinoald, the mayor of the palace in the Frankish kingdom of Neustria from 641 to 658. The Emma who married Eadbald had, as described in the Kentish Royal Legend, three children: Eormenred, Eorcenberht and Eanswith. She is known to have died in 642, two years after her husband. She was buried alongside Eadbald in the Church of St Mary, which he had built in the precincts of the monastery of St Peter and St Paul in Canterbury (a church later incorporated within the Norman edifice of St Augustine's). At that time, her relics were probably translated along with Eadbald's for reburial in the south transept ca. A.D. 1087.

- Title Of Nobility: Empress of Rome
- LifeSketch: Annia Galeria Faustina Minor (Minor is Latin for the Younger), Faustina Minor or Faustina the Younger (born probably 21 September[1] c. 130 AD,[2] — 175/176 AD[3]) was a daughter of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius and Roman Empress Faustina the Elder. She was a Roman Empress and wife to her maternal cousin Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. She was held in high esteem by soldiers and her own husband and was given divine honours after her death. Faustina, named after her mother, was her parents' fourth and youngest child and second daughter; she was also their only child to survive to adulthood. She was born and raised in Rome. Her great uncle, the emperor Hadrian, had arranged with her father for Faustina to marry Lucius Verus. On 25 February 138, she and Verus were betrothed. Verus’ father was Hadrian's first adopted son and his intended heir; however, when Verus’ father died, Hadrian chose Faustina's father to be his second adopted son, and eventually, he became Hadrian's successor. Faustina's father ended the engagement between his daughter and Verus and arranged for Faustina's betrothal to her maternal cousin, Marcus Aurelius; Aurelius was also adopted by her father. Imperial heiress[edit source] Bust of Marcus Aurelius in the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul, Turkey In April or May 145,[4] Faustina and Marcus Aurelius were married, as had been planned since 138. Since Aurelius was, by adoption, Antoninus Pius' son, under Roman law he was marrying his sister; Antoninus would have had to formally release one or the other from his paternal authority (his patria potestas) for the ceremony to take place.[5] Little is specifically known of the ceremony, but it is said to have been "noteworthy".[6] Coins were issued with the heads of the couple, and Antoninus, as Pontifex Maximus, would have officiated. Marcus makes no apparent reference to the marriage in his surviving letters, and only sparing references to Faustina.[7] Faustina was given the title of Augusta on 1 December 147 after the birth of her first child, Domitia Faustina.[8] Reign as empress[edit source] When Antoninus died on 7 March 161, Marcus and Lucius Verus ascended to the throne and became co-rulers. Faustina then became empress. Aureus of Antoninus Pius, struck at the Rome mint, dated c. 147–152. Obv: Bust of Faustina the Younger. Rev: Goddess Concordia standing. Not much has survived from the Roman sources regarding Faustina's life, but what is available does not give a good report. Cassius Dio and the unreliable Augustan History accuse Faustina of ordering deaths by poison and execution; she has also been accused of instigating the revolt of Avidius Cassius against her husband. The Augustan History mentions adultery with sailors, gladiators, and men of rank; however, Faustina and Aurelius seem to have been very close and mutually devoted. Faustina accompanied her husband on various military campaigns and enjoyed the love and reverence of Roman soldiers. Aurelius gave her the title of Mater Castrorum or ‘Mother of the Camp’. She attempted to make her home out of an army camp. Between 170–175, she was in the north, and in 175, she accompanied Aurelius to the east.
