- Father: Rudolf I König von Hochburgund
- Mother: Guilla DE PROVENCE
- Birth: ABT 890, Rhone Valley, Burgundy, France
- Also known as: Rudolph II of Hochburgund
- LifeSketch: Rudolph II (c. 880-11 July 937), a member of the Elder House of Welf, was King of Burgundy from 912 until his death. He initially succeeded in Upper Burgundy and also ruled as King of Italy from 922 to 926. In 933 Rudolph acquired the Kingdom of Lower Burgundy (Provence) from King Hugh of Italy in exchange for the waiver of his claims to the Italian crown, thereby establishing the united Burgundian Kingdom of Arles. «b»Life«/b» He was the son of the Upper Burgundian king Rudolph I, and it is presumed that his mother was his father's known wife Guilla, probably a daughter of King Boso of Provence. Following his ascent to the throne in 912, Rudolph II entered into a border conflict with the neighbouring Dukes of Swabia and campaigned the Thurgau and Zurich estates. Duke Burchard II of Swabia finally defeated him in the 919 Battle of Winterthur; both rulers made peace and Rudolph married Burchard's daughter Bertha in 922. At the same time, Rudolph was asked by several Italian nobles led by Margrave Adalbert I of Ivrea to intervene in Italy on their behalf against Emperor Berengar. Having entered Italy, he was crowned King of the Lombards at Pavia. In 923, he defeated Berengar at Piacenza; Berengar was murdered the following year, possibly at the instigation of Rudolph. The king then ruled Upper Burgundy and Italy together, residing alternately in both kingdoms. However, in 926 the Italian nobility turned against him and requested that Hugh of Arles, the effective ruler of Provence (or Lower Burgundy), rule them instead. Rudolph's father-in-law Duke Burchard II of Swabia came for his support, however, he was attacked and killed near Novara by the henchmen of Archbishop Lambert of Milan. The king returned to Upper Burgundy to protect himself, assuring Hugh's coronation as King of Italy in the process. At the Diet of Worms, Rudolph rendered the royal symbol of the Holy Lance to the East Frankish king Henry the Fowler in exchange for the Swabian Basel estates. The two Burgundian kingdoms unified from 933; Rudolph ruled until his death in 937 and was succeeded by his son Conrad. After his death in 937, his daughter Adelaide was married to Hugh's son Lothair, while Hugh married Rudolph's widow Bertha. Adelaide later became the second wife of Otto the Great, crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 962, and the mother of Emperor Otto II.

- Birth: 754, Brescia, Lombardia, Italië
- Also known as: Gerperga of Lombardia
- Repudiated by Charlemagne in 0771: marriage annulled
- LifeSketch: Ermengarda or Desiderata was one of four daughters of Desiderius, King of the Lombards, and his wife Ansa, Queen of the Lombards. She was married to Charlemagne in 770, in order for him to create a bond between Francia and the Kingdom of the Lombards and attempt to isolate his brother Carloman I who ruled over the central territories of Francia. The marriage lasted just one year and there are no known children from the marriage. Desiderata was the second wife of Charlemagne, although there are some questions over the nature of Charlemagne's relationship to Himiltrude, his first wife. Carolingian historian Janet Nelson states that the marriage and resulting alliance with the Lombard's was directed against Carloman, leaving Charlemagne's brother encircled as a result. The marriage received opposition from Pope Stephen III, who in the summer of 770 wrote a letter to Charlemagne and Carloman voicing his discontent at the potential union between "the most notable race of the Franks and that fetid brood of the Lombard's that had brought leprosy into the land." There is no mention of this marriage in the Royal Frankish Annals nor the revised version, however, it is mentioned briefly in chapter 18 of Einhard's Life of Charlemagne biography when he states that "at the urging of his mother he married a daughter of Desiderius." It is now believed by many that her name was actually 'Gerperga.' -------------------------------------------------- “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “CHARLEMAGNE, King of the Franks, 768-814, King of the Langobards, 773-814, Emperor of the Romans, 800-814, son of Pépin (nicknamed "le Bref”), King of the Franks, by Bertrade, daughter of Charibert, Count of Laon. On the death of his father in 768, he became King of the Franks jointly with his brother, Carloman, and was crowned 9 October 768 at Noyon. He married (1st c.769-770, daughter of Desiderius, king of the Lombards. They had no issue. He married (2nd) before 30 April 771 HILDEGARDE, daughter of Gerold I, Count in Vinzgau, by Imma (or Emma), daughter of Count Nebi (or Hnabi). They had four sons, Charles, Pépin [King of Italy], Louis (I) [King of Aquitaine, Emperor], and Lothair, and five daughters, Adelaide (or Adelheid), Rotrude, Berthe, Gisele, and Hildegarde. On the death of his brother, Carloman, in 771, he reunited his father's possessions. He conquered the kingdom of the Lombards in 773. He used the title "rex Francorum et Langobardorum" from 5 June 774, adding "atque patricius Romanorum" from 16 July 774. - LifeSketch: GEBUIN, [illegitimate] son of RICHARD "le Justicier" Duke of Burgundy & [his mistress ---] (-after Mar 951). A charter dated 18 Jan 926 records that “femina Bertagia” claimed “res...sitas in pago Equestrico, et in curte Avenaco, de res que de parte jugale suo...Alteo...et filio suo...Alteo” from “Leutardus”, that Rodolphe III King of Burgundy ordered “Turumbertum comitem et Anselmum comitem de pago Equestrico, atque Ugonem comte palatio” to enquire into the matter, that “Leutardus et Teodoricus vel ipsa femina” attended a hearing at which “ipsa...femina” claimed that "Ugo comes filius Ricardi et germanus suus Giboinus" had granted the property to her husband, calling named witnesses. It is likely that he was illegitimate as he is mentioned in none of the sources which list the other brothers of Hugues. same person as …? GEBUIN . There is no direct proof of co-identity of the two persons named Gebuin, but the unusual name indicates that it is probably correct. "Gibuin" witnessed a charter of Aquinas dated May 948, and a charter of Doda (wife of Aquinas) dated Mar 951. He is referred to as count in an early 10th century charter of his son Hugues. The Chronicle of St Pierre de Bèze records a donation by "Gibuinus et neptis mea Eraungardis" made "pro remedio animæ fratris mei Hugonis" which also names "Gibuini proavi mei et filii eius Hugonis…et Hugonis patris mei" and "fratres mei Hugo et Wido" and "sponso eius [nepti] Fulcone", undated but placed in the compilation several pages after the record of another donation dated 1043. m ---. The name of Gebuin's wife is not known. They had one child: 1. HUGUES I ( - 954/58). Comte de Dijon. m ADALBURGIS, daughter of ---. "Hugo comes Divionensis" requested to be buried at Saint-Bénigne de Dijon, and after his death "Adalburgis comitissa uxor eius" donated property with the consent of "filiorum ipsius Gibuini…Catalaunensis episcopi et Richardi qui post eum hunc tenuit comitatum et Hugonis Attoariorum comitis" by charter dated to 966/989. The Chronicle of St Bénigne de Dijon records the death of "Hugo comes Divionensis" and a donation by "Adalburgis comitissa uxor eius" for his soul "cum laude filiorum ipsius Gibuini Catalauennsis Episcopi et Richardi qui post eum hunc tenuit comitatum et Hugonis Attoariorum comitis", the brothers later in the same passage recorded as having donated further land "post obitum matris", the latter donation being recorded in the cartulary. Although undated, the passage follows immediately after text recording the death of Louis IV King of France, recorded elsewhere in 954. In the Chronicle of St Bénigne, as interpolated in the Chronicle of Alberic de Trois-Fontaines, the same donation is recorded under 958.

- Birth: 645
- Also known as: Athich, Adalrich oder Adalricus
- Occupation: Head of The Alsatian House of The Ethiconides
- Occupation: Mayor of the Palace of Neustria
- Clan Name: House of Etichinoids
- LifeSketch: He was the son of Leudesius and his wife -see Medlands Project Wikipedia Adalrich (Latin: Adalricus; reconstructed Frankish: *Adalrik; died after c. 683 AD), also known as Eticho,[a] was the Duke of Alsace, the founder of the family of the Etichonids and of the Habsburg, and an important and influential figure in the power politic of late seventh-century Austrasia. Adalrich's family originated in the pagus Attoariensis[1] around Dijon in northern Burgundy. In the mid-seventh century they began to be major founders and patrons of monasteries in the region under a duke named Amalgar and his wife Aquilina.[2] They founded a convent at Brégille and an abbey for men at Bèze, installing children in both abbacies. They were succeeded by their third child, Adalrich,[3] who was the father of Adalrich, Duke of Alsace. Civil war of 675–679[edit] Adalrich first enters history as a member of the faction of nobles which invited Childeric II to take the kingship of Neustria and Burgundy in 673 after the death of Chlothar III. He married Berswinda, a relative of Leodegar, the famous Bishop of Autun, whose party he supported in the civil war which followed Childeric's assassination two years later (675). Adalrich was duke by March 675, when Childeric had granted him honores in Alsace with the title of dux and asked him to transfer some land to the recently founded (c. 662) abbey at Gregoriental[4] on behalf of Abbot Valedio. This grant was most probably the result of his support for Childeric in Burgundy, which had often disputed possession of Alsace with Austrasia. Later writers saw Adalrich as the successor in Alsace of Duke Boniface. After Childeric's assassination, Adalrich threw his support behind Dagobert II for the Austrasian throne. Adalrich abandoned Leodegar and went over to Ebroin, the mayor of the palace of Neustria, sometime before 677, when he appears as an ally of Theuderic, who granted him the monastery of Bèze.[5] Taking advantage of the assassination of Hector of Provence in 679 to bid for power in Provence, he marched on Lyon but failed to take it and, returning to Alsace, switched his support to the Austrasians once more, only to find himself dispossessed of his lands in Alsace by King Theuderic III, an ally (and puppet) of Ebroin's who had opposed Dagobert in Austrasia since 675, who gave them to the Abbey of Bèze that year (679). Power in Alsace[edit] Adalrich maintained his power in a restricted dukedom which did not encompass land west of the Vosges as it had under Boniface and his predecessors. This land was a part of the kingdoms of Neustria and Burgundy, and only the land between the Vosges and the Rhine south to the Sornegau, later Alsace proper, remained with Austrasia under Adalrich. The west of Vosges was under duke Theotchar. In Alsace, however, the civil war had resulted in a curtailed royal power and Adalrich's influence and authority, though restricted in territory, was augmented in practical scope. After the war, parts of the Frankish kingdom saw a more powerful viceregal hand under the exercise of the mayors of the palaces, while other regions were even less directly affected by the royal prerogative. The Merovingian palace at Marlenheim in Alsace was never visited by a royal figure again in Adalrich's lifetime. While southern Austrasia had been the centre of Wulfoald's power, the Arnulflings were a north Austrasian family, who took scarce interest in Alsatian affairs until the 730s and 740s. Adalrich had initially made his allies counts, but in 683 he granted the comital office to his son and eventual successor Adalbert. By controlling monasteries and counties in the family, Adalrich built up a powerful regional duchy to pass on to his Etichonid heirs. Relationship with monasteries[edit] Adalrich had a rocky relationship with the monasteries of his realm, upon which he relied for his power. He is infamous for the suppression of that of Moutier-Grandval, and for lording it over monasteries, including his own foundations. According to the Life of Germanus of Grandval, Adalrich "wickedly began oppressing the people in the vicinity [Sornegau] of the monastery and to allege that they had always been rebels against his predecessors." He removed the centenarius ruling in the region and replaced him with his own man, Count Ericho. He exiled the people of the Sornegau, who denied being rebels against previous dukes. Many of the people exiled from the valley were attached to Grandval and could not thus be exiled. Adalrich marched into the valley of the Sornegau with a large army of Alemanni at one end while his lieutenant Adalmund entered with a host by the other. The abbot, Germanus himself, and his provost Randoald met Adalrich with books and relics in order to persuade him not to make violence. The duke granted a wadium,[6] a device of recompense or promise, and offered thus to spare the valley devastation, but for unknown reasons Germanus refused it. The region was ravaged. Perhaps as penance for his relationship to the deaths of two future saints, Leodegar and Germanus of Grandval, or perhaps out of a secret desire — disclosed it is said to his intimate friends — to found a place to the service of God and take up the religious life, Adalrich founded two monasteries in north central Alsace between 680 and 700: Ebersheim in honour of Saint Maurice and Hohenburg on the site of an old Roman fort (of the emperor Maximian) discovered by his huntsmen and which he appropriated for his own military uses. Adalrich's daughter Odilia served as Hohenburg's first abbess and was later named patron saint of Alsace by Pope Pius VII in 1807. Veneration as a saint[edit] His daughter Odilia was reputedly born blind, which Adalrich took as a punishment for some offence done to God. In order to save face with his retainers, he tried to persuade his wife to kill the infant child in secret. Bereswinda instead sent the child into hiding with a maid at the monastery of Palma. According to the Life of Odilia, a bishop named Erhard baptised the adolescent girl and smeared a chrism on her eyes, which miraculously restored her sight. The bishop tried to restore the duke's relationship with his daughter, but Adalrich, fearing the effect of admitting to having a daughter hiding in poverty in a monastery would have on his subjects, refused. A son of his, ignoring Adalrich's orders, brought his sister back to Hohenburg, where Adalrich was holding court. When Odilia arrived, Adalrich, in a rage, struck a blow with his sceptre to his son's head, accidentally killing him. Disgraced, he reluctantly allowed Odilia to live in the monastery, which had no abbess, with a minimal wage under a British nun. Towards the end of his life he was reconciled to her and made her the first abbess of his foundation, handing the abbey over as if it were private property.[7] Through his daughter Adalrich was reconciled to God and as early as the twelfth century was regarded as a saint with a local cult. His burial garments were displayed to pilgrims in his foundation at Hohenburg and a feast day was celebrated annually by the nuns. The portrayal of Adalrich as a nobleman who became holy while retaining his noble status and rank was very popular in the Rhineland and as far away as Bavaria in the Middle Ages. The Life probably sought to show how by simply maltreating a blind daughter in order to save face, Adalrich ended up far more dishonoured than he otherwise would have.

- Father: Baldwin IV DE FLANDRE
- Mother: Éléonore DE NORMANDIE
- Birth: Brugge, West Flanders, Belgium
- Title Of Nobility: Countess of Northumbria
- LifeSketch: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_de_Flandre Judith of Flanders or Judith Fausta van Vlaanderen (1031/1035 - 5 March 1094 )1 was the daughter of Count Baudouin IV of Flanders. She was married in 1051 to Tostig Godwinson,Earl of Northumberland, and in 1071 with Welf IV,Duke of Bavaria. Renowned for her collection of illuminated books and manuscripts, she bequeathed it toWeingarten Abbey,to which she also left the relic inherited from Baudouin V in 1067, which, according to legend, contains a drop of Jesus' blood mixed with earth. This is the origin of the procession of the Holy Blood in Weingarten. Family Judith was born between 1030 and 1035 in Bruges. She is the only daughter of Baudouin IV, Earl of Flanders, and his second wife, Éleonore of Normandy, daughter of Richard II of Normandy and Judith of Brittany. She has a half-brother from the first marriage of her father, Baudouin V, Earl of Flanders, who succeeds their father when he died, which occurred when the young princess is only two years old (some historians claim that she is in fact the daughter of Baudouin V and not of Baudouin IV). She is also the aunt of Mathilde of Flanders, who will marry William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England. Guillaume is also Judith's first cousin since the son of his maternal uncle, Duke Robert of Normandy. First marriage On an unknown date before September 1051,Judith married her first husband, Tostig Godwinson,Harold'syounger brother, who briefly bed king of England in 1066 before being defeated at Hastings and killed by William the Conqueror. In September 1051,she was forced to flee England to take refuge in Bruges with her husband and in-laws after Tostig's participation in her father's armed rebellion against King Edward the Confessor. However, they returned to England the following year. He was made Earl of Northumbria in 1055 and it is certain that his marriage to such a high-line princess helped him to establish his position at the head of the county. The couple will have several children whose names and numbers are unknown. They are referred to in the Vita 'dwardi Regis as 'unsanered' at the time of their father's death. Tostig also appears to have had at least three natural sons of unknown mistresses. Judith is described as a pious and curious woman. Her piety is expressed in the many gifts and gifts she offers toSt Cuthbert's Churchin Durham, including land and an ornate crucifix. The latter was said to have been a gift to the saint to appease her after she rebelled against the rule prohibiting women from accessing the cathedral where her relics were located. Judith, dissatisfied with the fact that she, as a woman, could not enter the church when she wished to gather at the saint's tomb, had decided to defy the ban by sending her maid inside the church to see what the repercussions would be (if all had gone smoothly, Judith then planned to go there herself); As the woman was about to enter the church cemetery, she was struck by a strong and sudden wind that left her crippled before killing her. Judith, in order to ward off fate, had the crucifix made especially for the tomb of Saint Cuthbert. Throughout her life, she collected and commissioned many illuminated books and manuscripts, some of which remain, including the Gospels of Countess Judith, currently held at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. They were made by English scribes and artists to remind posterity of Judith's generosity to the Church. In October 1065, Northumbria rebelled against the government of Tostig. His brother, Harold, persuaded King Edward to accept the rebels' demands, which provoked an acrimonious exchange between the two brothers, with Tostig going so far as to accuse Harold of fomenting the rebellion. In November, Tostig was banished by King Edward and the couple had to flee with their children to take refuge with the Countess' half-brother in Flanders. Count Baudouin makes Tostig châtelain de Saint-Omer. In May 1066, with Harold's accession to the throne of England, Tostig returned to his country at the head of a fleet provided by Baudouin, in order to take revenge on his brother. He allied himself with King Harold III of Norway but both were killed on 25 September 1066 at the Battle of Stamford Bridge by King Harold's forces. The Death of Harold (Bayeux Tapestry). When her husband dies, Judith moved to Denmark, probably with her children, but nothing was known about her life from there. Two Norwegian sagas, Fagrskinna and Morkinskinna, refer to Skuli Konungsfestri, the founder of norway's Inge IIdynasty, as Tostig's son, but Heimskringla attributes different ancestors to him. There is no text that mentions Judith as her mother. Less than a month after Tostig's death, Harold was killed at the Battle of Hastings by the Norman army led by his cousin William the Conqueror, who ascended to the throne as William I of England. Second marriage In 1071, aged 38, Judith married her second husband, Welf I, Duke of Bavaria, divorced in 1070 from his first wife, Ethelinde de Northeim, daughterof Otton of Northeim, Duke of Bavaria. With this marriage, she became Duchess of Bavaria, but in 1077 her husband was stripped of his title, which he did not recover until 1096, a year after his wife's death. They made Ravensburg Castle their main residence and born three children: Welf II, Duke of Bavaria (1072 † 24 September 1120), without children from his union with Mathilde of Tuscany ; Henry IX, Duke of Bavaria (1074 † 13 December 1126) ; Kunizza († 6 March 1120), married to Count Frédéric Rocho de Diessen. Death On March 12, 1094,Judith and her husband made donations to the family monastery in Weingarten Abbey, where she was buried when she died on March 5, 1095. The abbey had been built by Duke Welf at the top of the Martinsberg in Weingarten and had been placed under the patronage of Judith. Her husband died in 1101 in Cyprus upon his return from the First Crusade.

- Father: Gisulf I DE FRIULI Dux der Langobarden
- Birth: ABT 560, Pannonia,
- Also known as: Gisulf II Dux Foroiulanus
- Title Of Nobility: 2nd Duke of Friuli ... Duca di Frioul, BET 590 AND 611, Friuli, Italy
- Post Roman Pannonia: Post-Roman Gerulata- a Roman military camp located near today's Rusovce, Slovakia. During the Migrations Period in the 5th century, some parts of Pannonia were ceded to the Huns in 433 by Flavius Aetius, the magister militum of the Western Roman Empire.[14] After the collapse of the Hunnic empire in 454, large numbers of Ostrogoths were settled by Western Roman Emperor Marcian in the province as foederati. The Eastern Roman Empire controlled southern parts of Pannonia in the 6th century, during the reign of Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I. The Byzantine province of Pannonia with its capital at Sirmium was temporarily restored, but it included only a small southeastern part of historical Pannonia. Afterwards, it was again invaded by the Avars in the 560s, and the Slavs, who first may settled c. 480s but became independent only from the 7th century. In 790s, it was invaded by the Franks, who used the name "Pannonia" to designate named newly formed frontier province, the March of Pannonia. The term Pannonia was also used for Slavic polity like Lower Pannonia that was vassal to the Frankish Empire. Between the 5th and the 10th centuries, the romanized population of Pannonia developed the Romance Pannonian language, mainly around Lake Balaton in present-day western Hungary, where there was the keszthely culture. This language and the related culture became extinct with the arrival of the Magyars.
- LifeSketch: GISULF II,(-killed in battle Friulia 610). The primary source which confirms that Gisulf was the son of Duke Gisulf I has not yet been identified. He succeeded his father as GISULF II Duke of Friulia. Paulus Diaconus records that "Gaidoaldus dux de Tridento et Gisulfus de Foroiuli" rebelled against Agilolf King of the Lombards but were pardoned[172]. His importance as ruler in Friulia is shown by Paulus Diaconus specifying that the installation of "Iohannes" as Patriarch of Aquileja was "cum consensu regis et Gisulfi ducis"[173]. Paulus Diaconus records that "rex Avarum" launched another invasion during which "Gisulfus Foroiulianis dux" was killed[174]. m ROMILDA, daughter of ---. Paulus Diaconus names "Romilda" as wife of "Gisulfus Foroiulanus dux", when he records her escape with her children after her husband was killed[175]. Duke Gisulf & his wife had eight children: a) TASSO (-executed Opitergium 625). b) CACCO (-executed Opitergium 625). c) RADOALD (-[647/48]). d) GRIMOALD (-671, bur Ticinum, Basilica of St Ambrosius) e) APPA f) GAILA g) daughter h) daughter ***************** History of Language in Italy Most of Italy's Romance languages predate Italian and evolved locally from Vulgar Latin, independently of what would become the standard national language, long before the fairly recent spread of Italian throughout Italy.[12][11] The indigenous Romance languages of Italy are therefore classified as separate languages that evolved from Latin just like Italian, rather than "dialects" or variations of the latter.[13][14][15] The official languages of the region are Italian, Friulian, Slovene and German.[21] Italian is the official national language. Friulian language is also spoken in most of the region — with a few exceptions, most notably Trieste and the area around Monfalcone and Grado, where a version of the Venetian language and Triestine dialect is spoken instead. Venetian is also spoken in western part of the Province of Pordenone, and in the city of Pordenone itself, due to its proximity with the Veneto region. Friulian and Venetian are more common in the countryside, while standard Italian is the predominant language in the larger towns (Udine, Pordenone, Gorizia). The region is also home to Italy's Slovene-speaking minority.

- Father: Karolus Magnus Rex Francorum Imperator ROMANORUM
- Mother: Hildegard VON VINZGAU Fränkische Königin
- Birth: APR 777, Aachen, Neustria
- Christening: 12 APR 781, Roma, Lazio, Italy
- Occupation: King of Lombardy & Italy, BET 781 AND 810
- LifeSketch: Pippin of Italy probably allied himself with the member of a sex that had influence in Italy. Bernhard's successor must have found support from the maternal relatives. However, the name and origin of Bernhard's mother have not been passed down. Thegan, the biographer LUDWIGS DES RELIGIOUS, explicitly mentions her as the concubine of Pippins of Italy. Thegan's reasons for defaming Bernhard's claims to Italy are obvious; however, his statement about Pippin's marriage finds some confirmation in a letter from Alcuin. Alcuin congratulates Pippin on "the wife of his youth", whereby he used a quotation from the Bible, which, however, could have referred to the special form of marriage of the king's son. In the event that Alcuin's letter referred to a recent event, the year 796 would be the date of the marriage of Pippin of Italy. The point in time coincided with Pippin's participation in KARL's Avar campaign, which may have made backing in Italy particularly necessary. Herm, Gerhard: page 248,306 ------- Pepin or Pippin (or Pepin Carloman, Pepinno, April 777 – 8 July 810), born Carloman, was the son of Charlemagne and King of the Lombards (781–810) under the authority of his father. Pepin was the second son of Charlemagne by his wife Hildegard. He was born Carloman, but was rechristened with the royal name Pepin (also the name of his older half-brother Pepin the Hunchback, and his grandfather Pepin the Short) when he was a young child. He was made "king of Italy" after his father's conquest of the Lombards, in 781, and crowned by Pope Hadrian I with the Iron Crown of Lombardy. King Pepin had five [illegitimate] children by Mistress (1). It is not known whether they were full sisters of Bernard. 1. BERNARD 2. ADELAIS ([798]-after 810). 3. ADULA ([800/810]-after 810). 4. GUNTRADA ([800/810]-after 810). 5. BERTAIDE ([800/810]-after 810). 6. THEODRADA ([800/810]-after 810) The issue of Pepin's relationships is not entirely clear. A litany of Liber confrater augiensis attributes to him as his wife a certain Chrotais (or Ruadheid), married shortly before 796,. However, the Vita Hludowici written by Thégan around 840 says that King Bernard of Italy was born of a concubine (ex concubina natus), an affirmation reinforced by a litany of St. Gallen placing Bernard in a list of Carolingians of illegitimate birth. We do not know the origin of Chrotais but her name, that of Bernard of Italy and the fact that Adalard de Corbie and his half-brother Wala are then the protectors of Bernard of Italy suggests a close relationship between Chrotais and these. This hypothesis is reinforced by the fact that the first names of Bernard, Gundrada and Theodrada are found in the brothers and sisters of Wala and Adalard. Only, it is chronologically improbable that Chrotais is daughter of Wala, impossible that it is daughter of a brother or sister of Wala, who were too young, and the Vita Adalhardiis formal about the fact that Bernard had only five children. It remains as an explanation that the wife of Pepin d'Italie is a grand-niece of his namesake, the third wife of Charles Martel.
