- LifeSketch: Magoo.com: Scots Kings Birth of Scottish Dál Riada See 498 CE - Birth of Scottish Dal Riada. "Very little is known about the early Kingdom of Scottish Dal Riada or its first King Fergus. It is believed that Fergus' father Erc MacEochaid and possibly his older brother held the throne before him in Ireland. Erc died in 474, leaving a space of as much as 24 years unaccounted for in the lists of Kings. Some genealogical charts show that Erc, son of Eachach Muinremair and descendant of Cairbre Riada, and father of Fergus, ruled Dalriada in 503 A.D. For example, see the chart in Jim's Two Irish Surnames—Maguire. The Annals of the Four Masters report, however, that Eirc, son of Eochaidh Muinreamhar, died in 474. O'Donovan's notes identify him as "the ancestor of the Dalriadic kings of Scotland." *************** Fergus Mór mac Erc was a legendary king of Dál Riata. While his historicity may be debatable, his posthumous importance as the founder of Scotland in the national myth of Medieval and Renaissance Scotland is not in doubt. Rulers of Scotland from Cináed mac Ailpín until the present time claim descent from Fergus Mór. The historical record, such as it is, consists of an entry in the "Annals of Tigernach," for the year 501, which states: "Feargus Mor mac Earca cum gente Dal Riada partem Britaniae tenuit, et ibi mortuus est" (Fergus Mór mac Eirc, with the people of Dál Riata, held part of Britain, and he died there.). However, the forms of Fergus, Erc and Dál Riata are later ones, written down long after the 6th century. The record in the "Annals" has given rise to theories of invasions of Argyll from Ireland, but these are not considered authentic. The genealogy of Fergus is found in the king lists of Dál Riata, and later of Scotland, of which the "Senchus Fer n-Alban" and the "Duan Albanach" can be taken as examples. The "Senchus" states that Fergus Mór also was known as "Mac Nisse Mór." These sources probably date from the 10th and 11th centuries, respectively, between 20 and 30 generations after Fergus may have lived. The "Senchus" and the "Duan" name Fergus's father as Erc, son of Eochaid Muinremuir. A Middle Irish genealogy of the kings of Alba gives an extensive genealogy for Fergus: [Fergus] m. h-Eircc, m. Echdach Muinremuir, m. Óengusa Fir, m. Feideilmid, m. Óengusa, m. Feideilmid, m. Cormaicc, and a further 46 generations, here omitted. While some believe Fergus claimed lineage to King Arthur, the historian John Morris has suggested, instead, that Fergus was allowed to settle in Scotland as a federate of Arthur, as a bulwark against the Picts. These sources, while they offer evidence for the importance of Fergus Mór in Medieval times, are not evidence for his historical career. Indeed, only one king in the 6th century in Scotland is known from contemporary evidence, Ceretic of Alt Clut, and even this identification rests upon a later gloss to Saint Patrick's "Letter to Coroticus." The existence of the first kings of Dál Riata that are reasonably confirmed are Fergus's grandsons Gabrán mac Domangairt and Comgall, or perhaps his great-grandson Áedán mac Gabráin. In the contexts of Patrician tradition, legendary accounts and symbolic description, the figure twelve is mentioned with reference to the sons of Ere. Andrew of Wyntoun's early 15th century "Orygynale Cronykil of Scotland" says that Fergus was the first Scot to rule in Scotland, and that Cináed mac Ailpín was his descendant. In addition, he writes that Fergus brought the Stone of Scone with him from Ireland, that he was succeeded by a son named Dúngal. A list of kings follows which is corrupt but bears some relation to those found in earlier sources. If Wyntoun's account adds little to earlier ones, at the end of the 16th century George Buchanan in his "Rerum Scoticarum Historia" added much, generally following John of Fordun. In this version, the Scots had been expelled from Scotland when the Romans under one Maximus conquered all of Britain. His father Eugenius had been killed by the Romans, and Fergus, Fergusius II according to Buchanan's count, was raised in exile in Scandinavia. He later fought with the Franks, before eventually returning to Scotland and reconquering the Scottish lands. He was killed in battle against Durstus, king of the Picts, and was succeeded by his son Eugenius. A linked tradition traces the origin of Clan Cameron to the son of the royal family of Denmark who assisted Fergus II in the above restoration to Scotland. Buchanan's king, James VI, shared the scholar's view of the origins of his line, describing himself in one of many verses written to his wife Anne of Denmark, as the "happie Monarch sprung of Ferguse race." Nor was James VI the last ruler to share this belief. The Great Gallery of the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh was decorated with 89 of Jacob de Wet's portraits of Scottish monarchs, from Fergus to Charles II, produced to the order of James's grandson. James II's Irish partisans welcomed the king at Kilkenny during the Williamite War, declaring, "We conducted a Fergus to Scotland; we welcome in James the Second the undoubted heir of Fergus by the lineal descent of one hundred and ten crowned heads." -- from Wikiwand: Fergus Mór ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Irish King List - on the origin of Fergus Mor mac Erc. "In the 20th year of the reign of the monarch Lughaidh, son of Laeghaire, with a complete army, Fergus Mor mac Earca (along with five of his brothers, Fergus Og, Loarn Mor, Loarn Og, Aongus Mor, and Aongus Og) went into Scotland to assist his grandfather, King Loarn (note: his grandmother's name was Earca Loarn), who was much oppressed by his enemies, the Picts; who were vanquished by Fergus and his party, who prosecuted the war so vigorously, followed the enemy to their own homes, and reduced them to such extremity, that they were glad to accept peace upon the conqueror's own conditions; whereupon, on the King's death, which happened about the same time, the said Fergus Mor was unanimously elected and chosen King as being of the blood royal by his mother. And the said Fergus, for a good and lucky omen, sent to his brother, who was then Monarch of Ireland, for the Marble Seat, called "Saxum Fatale" (in Irish, "Liath Fail," and "Cloch-na-Cinneamhna," implying in English, "The Stone of Destiny" to be crowned thereupon; which happened accordingly, for, as he was the first absolute King of all Scotland of the Miesian Race, so the succession continued in his blood and lineage ever since to this day." -- unknown source
- LifeSketch: 90. Fergus Mor Mac Earca, the brother of Murchertach (or Murtogh) Mor Mac Earca, the 131st Monarch of Ireland. “In A.D. 498, Fergus Mor Mac Earca, in the twentieth year of the reign of his father, Muredach son of (Eugenius, or) Owen, son of Niall of the Nine Hostages, with five more of his brothers, viz, another Fergus, two more named Loarn, and two named Aongus (or Aeneas), with a complete army, went into Scotland to assist his grandfather Loarn, who was king of Dalriada, and who was much oppressed by his enemies the Picts, who were in several battles and engagements vanquished and overcome by Fergus and his party. Whereupon, on the king's death, which happened about the same time, the said Fergus was unaimously elected and chosen king, as being of the Blood Royal, by his mother; and the said Fergus was the first absolute king of Scotland, of the Milesian Race: so the succession continued in his blood and lineage ever since to this day.” --Four Masters. "According tp the Scottish chroniclers, it was A.D. 424. that Fergus Mor Mac Earca went from Ireland to Scotland. Before him, the Milesian kings in that country were kings only of that part of it called “Dalriada” of which Loarn, the grandfather of Fergus More Mac Earca (Mac Earca: Irish, son of Earca, daugher of Loarn) was the last king." (see Part IX., c. iv. under “The Genealogy of the Kings of Dalriada”) SOURCE: Irish Pedigrees; or the Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation by John O'Hart, 1892 (5th Edition) Volume 1 "According to legend the Stone of Destiny was brought to Scotland by Fergus Mor from Ireland, which it had reached by way of Spain and Egypt from the Holy Land." - LifeSketch: Padarn Beisrudd ap Tegid literally translates as Paternus of the Scarlet Robe, son of Tegid. His father, Tegid ap Iago, may have borne the Roman name of Tacitus. Padarn is believed to have been born around AD 400 in the Old North (or Hen Gogledd) of Roman Britain. According to Old Welsh tradition, his grandson, Cunedda certainly came from Manaw Gododdin, the modern Clackmannanshire region of Scotland. One traditional interpretation identifies Padarn as a Roman (or Romano-British) official of reasonably high rank who had been placed in command of Votadini troops stationed in Clackmannanshire in the 380s or earlier by the Emperor Magnus Maximus. Alternatively, he may have been a frontier chieftain in the same region who was granted Roman military rank, a practice attested elsewhere along the empire's borders at the time. His command in part of what is now Scotland probably lasted till his death and was then assumed by his son Edern. Edern was the father of Cunedda, founder of the Kingdom of Gwynedd. The coat of Padarn Redcoat is one of the Thirteen Treasures of the Island of Britain, where it is said to fit perfectly any brave man, but will not fit cowards. The Life of Saint Padarn contains a story about how King Arthur tried to steal his tunic, which suggests a link or borrowing of a legend connected with Padarn Redcoat. «b»In literature and film«/b» In M J Trow's fictional Britannia series, Padarn Beisrudd is one of the central characters. He is given the latinised name of Paternus and portrayed as a limitanei soldier guarding Hadrian's Wall.

- Title Of Nobility: King of Brittany
- LifeSketch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gradlon Gradlon the Great (Gradlon Meur) was a semi-legendary 5th century "king" of Cornouaille who became the hero of many Breton folk stories. The most famous of these legends is the story of the sunken city of Ys. He is supposed to have been the son of Conan Meriadoc. «b»The legend Gradlon and Malgven«/b» According to some 19th-century legends, he was in love with a magician called Malgven. Gradlon had many ships he used to wage war against the faraway countries of the North. An outstanding strategist, he won most of the battles and pillaged the vanquished, amassing great wealth. One day, his sailors tired of fighting and refused to continue to lay siege to a castle. The sailors returned home and he remained alone in the North. When he was alone he saw a red-haired woman: Malgven, Queen of the North, standing in front of him. She told him, "I know you. You are courageous and skillful in fighting. My husband is old; his sword has rusted. You and I are going to kill him, then go to your country of Cornouaille." They killed the king of the North and went on Morvarc'h ("sea horse" in Breton), Malgven's magical horse. It was black, spit fire from its nostrils and was able to gallop on the sea. They caught up with Gradlon's vessels, but the approach of Morvarc'h caused the fleet to flee. «b»The return trip and the Dahut's birth«/b» Gradlon and Malgven remained long at sea, so Malgven gave birth to a daughter, Dahut. According to some versions of the story, giving birth killed the queen. According to other versions, she didn't die but, some time after the birth of Dahut, she asked Gradlon what he thought about Dahut. He responded "I already cherish her as I cherish you." Malgven announced that Dahut's face would keep the appearance of hers, so she would not be forgotten by him, because it was time for her to return to her world. She added that they would see an island shortly after, and Gradlon should let her go there; otherwise they could never see the earth again. Soon after, they saw an island and there Malgven was left alone. Shortly after, Gradlon arrived in Cornouaille with Dahut, but without Malgven. «b»Ys«/b» Later, Dahut had a key role in the story of Ys, a city built below sea level and protected by a gate that kept the sea out. Dahut turned the city into a place of sin and debauchery. One night she stole the key to the gate from her sleeping father and drunkenly opened the gate. Gradlon awoke and rescued his daughter from the drowning city on his magical horse, but her sins kept dragging them into the sea before he could reach land. In the end Saint Winwaloe told him to drop his daughter. She was swallowed by the sea, becoming a form of siren or morgen, luring men to destruction. Gradlon re-established his rule in Quimper, before eventually retiring as a hermit. «b»Descendants«/b» At Gradlon's death, his son Salomon the 1st succeeded him, then his grandson, Aldrien. Dahut appears again in the Arthurian legend of King Mark. «b»Historicity«/b» According to the sources, several historical Gradlons existed: Gradlon Meur is cited in a cartulary of Landévennec, but there is also a Gradlon Flam and Gradlon Plueneuor (Plonéour). They are generally classified as consul, which can be understood as the count - as the Latin texts translate the Breton title of mac'htiern by "tyrant". They would have most likely lived between the 5th and 9th centuries. In the Gallo-Roman era, the capital of Osismes - predecessors of Cornouailles, Trégorrois and Léonards - was Carhaix. And if there was a city on the Odet it was not yet Quimper, but a little downstream in the current Locmaria quarter.

- Also known as: Regnal name: Bruttia Crispina Augusta
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - Bruttia Crispina (164 – 191 AD) was Roman Empress from 178 to 191 as the consort of Roman Emperor Commodus.[1] Her marriage to Commodus did not produce an heir, and her husband was instead succeeded by Pertinax. Family Crispina came from an illustrious aristocratic family and was the daughter of twice consul Gaius Bruttius Praesens[2] and his wife Valeria.[3] Crispina’s paternal grandparents were consul and senator Gaius Bruttius Praesens and the rich heiress Laberia Hostilia Crispina, daughter of another twice consul, Manius Laberius Maximus. Crispina's brother was future consul Lucius Bruttius Quintius Crispinus. Her father’s family originally came from Volceii, Lucania, Italy and were closely associated with the Roman Emperors Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. Crispina was born and raised in Rome or Volceii. Marriage Crispina married the sixteen-year-old Commodus in the summer of 178 and brought him, as a dowry, a large number of estates. These, when added to the Imperial holdings, gave him control of a substantial part of Lucanian territory.[4][5][6] The actual ceremony was modest but was commemorated on coinage, and largesse was distributed to the people.[7] An epithalamium for the occasion was composed by the sophist Julius Pollux.[8] Upon her marriage, Crispina received the title of Augusta,[9] and thus became empress of the Roman Empire, as her husband was co-emperor with her father-in-law at the time. The previous empress and her mother-in-law, Faustina the Younger had died three years prior to her arrival. Like most marriages of young members of the nobiles, it was arranged by patres—in Crispina's case by her father and her new father-in-law, the emperor Marcus Aurelius. Crispina is described as being a graceful person with a susceptible heart.[10] As Augusta, Crispina was extensively honoured with public images during the last two years of her father-in-law's reign and the initial years of her husband's reign.[9] She did not seem to have any significant political influence over her husband during his bizarre reign. However, she was not exempted from court politics either, as her sister-in-law Lucilla, herself a former empress, was reportedly ambitious and jealous of the empress Crispina due to her position and power.[11] Crispina's marriage failed to produce an heir,[12] which led to a dynastic succession crisis. In fact, both Lucius Antistius Burrus (with whom Commodus had shared his first consulate as sole ruler) and Gaius Arrius Antoninus, who were probably related to the imperial family, were allegedly put to death 'on the suspicion of pretending to the throne'.[13] After ten years of marriage, Crispina was falsely charged with adultery by her husband and was banished to the island of Capri in 188, where she was later executed.[14] After her banishment, Commodus did not marry again but took on a mistress, a woman named Marcia, who was later said to have conspired in his murder.[15] Death Empress Bruttia Crispina, draped bust On the basis of a misreading of HA Commodus 5.9 and Dio 73.4.6, her fall is sometimes wrongly associated with Lucilla's conspiracy to assassinate Commodus in 181 or 182. Her name continues to appear in inscriptions until as late as 191 (CIL VIII, 02366). Her eventual exile and death may instead have been a result of the fall of Marcus Aurelius Cleander, or of Commodus's inability to produce offspring with her to ensure the dynastic succession.[16]

Born beneath the soaring walls of Pavia While her father was subduing the realms of Italy, She was snatched from the threshold of life As she approached the Rhone...... She left before she could witness her father's triumphs, But now she lives in blessed realms with her eternal Father."

- LifeSketch: Bertha (c. 780 – after 11 March 824) was the seventh child and third daughter of Charlemagne, King of the Franks, by his second wife, Hildegard of the Vinzgau. Bertha was raised with her brothers and sisters in the royal household of Charlemagne, who had all of his children educated by tutors. An offer by Offa of Mercia to arrange a marriage between Bertha and his son, Ecgfrith, led to Charlemagne breaking off diplomatic relations with Mercia in 790, and banning English ships from his ports. Like her sisters, Bertha never formally married; it has been speculated that Charlemagne did not want his daughters married for strategic reasons, fearing political rivalry from their potential husbands. Bertha was in a long relationship with Angilbert, a court official, which produced three children. During 794-5, Angilbert presented a poem as a court entertainment, praising the beauty and charms of Charlemagne's daughters; Bertha is praised in particular for having critical discernment and appreciation for poetry, which Angilbert points out is a cause for him to be concerned about how she might receive his poem. Bertha's children with Angilbert: -Hartnid, about whom little is known -Nithard, Abbott of St. Riquier, the historian -Bertha who went on to marry Helgaud II, Count of Ponthieu. Angilbert ended his affair with Bertha and entered a monastery, becoming Abbott of St. Riquier, according to a biography written by their son, Nithard. Angilbert remained an important advisor to Charlemagne, however. The children of Bertha and Angilbert were likely educated in Charlemagne's court. Nithard was a distinguished soldier and politician, and acted as an advisor to Charles the Bald of France. Following the death of Charlemagne, his successor, Louis the Pious, exiled his sisters to the convents that had been left for their inheritance by their father. -------------- “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “CHARLEMAGNE, King of the Franks, 768-814, King of the Langobards, 773-814, Emperor of the Romans, 800-814, son of Pépin (nicknamed "le Bref”), King of the Franks, by Bertrade, daughter of Charibert, Count of Laon. On the death of his father in 768, he became King of the Franks jointly with his brother, Carloman, and was crowned 9 October 768 at Noyon. He married (1st c.769-770, daughter of Desiderius, king of the Lombards. They had no issue. He married (2nd) before 30 April 771 HILDEGARDE, daughter of Gerold I, Count in Vinzgau, by Imma (or Emma), daughter of Count Nebi (or Hnabi). They had four sons, Charles, Pépin [King of Italy], Louis (I) [King of Aquitaine, Emperor], and Lothair, and five daughters, Adelaide (or Adelheid), Rotrude, Berthe, Gisele, and Hildegarde. On the death of his brother, Carloman, in 771, he reunited his father's possessions. He conquered the kingdom of the Lombards in 773. He used the title "rex Francorum et Langobardorum" from 5 June 774, adding "atque patricius Romanorum" from 16 July 774. His wife, Hildegarde, died at Thionville (Moselle) 30 April 783, and was buried in the church of the abbey of Saint Arnoul at Metz. He married (3rd) at Worms in October 783 FASTRADA, daughter of Radulf, Count in Franconia. They had two daughters, Theodrade [Abbess of Argenteuil] and Hiltrude. His wife, Fastrada, died at Frankfurt 10 August 794, and was buried in the basilica of Saint-Alban in Mainz. He married (4th) c.794-796 LIUTGARDE, an Alamannian. They had no issue. By various mistresses, he had four illegitimate sons, Pépin, Dreux [Bishop of Metz], Hugues, and Thierry (or Theodoric), and three illegitimate daughters, Chrothais, Rothlldis (or Rouhaut) [Abbess at Faremoutiers], and Adaltrude. His wife, Liutgarde, died at Tours 4 June 800, and was buried in the church of Saint-Martin in Tours. He was crowned Emperor of the Romans at St. Peter's, Rome 25 December 800. CHARLEMAGNE, Emperor of the Romans, died at Aachen 28 January 814, and was buried at Aix-la-Chapelle. Karl läßt in Verden ungefähr 4500 aufrührerische Sachsen enthaupten. 783 Hildegard und Karls Mutter Bertrada sterben. Frühjahr: Feldzug gegen die Sachsen. Herbst: Karl heiratet Fastrada. 788 Karl feiert Ostern in Ingelheim. Münzreform 795 Papst Hadrian I. stirbt. Sein Nachfolger Leo III. schickt Karl sofort Beweise seiner Freundschaft. 796 Karl heiratet Liutgard. - Father: Karolus Magnus Rex Francorum Imperator ROMANORUM
- Mother: Hildegard VON VINZGAU Fränkische Königin
- Birth: 775, Aachen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany
- Also known as: Rotrude of Chelles
- Also known as: Hrotrudis, Hruotrud, Hruodrud, Chrotrude
- Also known as: Hrotrudis, Hruotrud, Hruodrud, Chrotrude
- Also known as: Hrotrudis, Hruotrud, Hruodrud, Chrotrude
- Also known as: Hrotrudis, Hruotrud, Hruodrud, Chrotrude
- BECAME A NUN: Rotrude eventually became a nun, joining her aunt Gisela, abbess of Chelles.
- Affiliation: Carolingian Dynasty
- LifeSketch: Rotrude (or Rotrudis, Hrotrud, Hruodrud, Hruotrud) was the oldest daughter of Charlemagne and his second wife Hildegard, born about 775 in Aachen Palace. She was the second daughter born but her older sister died an infant and in the 'Vita Karoli Magni' Einhard refers to her as Charlemagne's oldest daughter. Rotrude was educated in the Palace School at Aachen, along with her brothers and sisters, but was also tutored by a monk, Elisaeus, specifically sent from Greece to teach her the Greek language and manners. At 6 years old Rotrude was betrothed to the Byzantine emperor Constantine VI, whose mother Irene was ruling as regent. The engagement was broken in 788, after the alliance fell apart. Rotrude never married, she did, however, have a relationship with Rorgon (later Count of Maine) about 799. This may have been an attempt by Rorgon to marry into the royal family but Charlemagne did not often allow his daughters to marry. It is possible that upon discovering the affair, Charlemagne sent Rorgon from court and arranged a marriage, for Rorgon married Bilechilde about the same time (799). In 800 Rotrude and Rorgon had an illegitimate son, Louis, who became Abbot of Saint-Denis, Saint-Riquier, and Saint-Wandrille. Rorgon II, the son of Rorgon and his wife Bilechilde, was born the same year. Rotrude eventually became a nun, joining her aunt Gisela, abbess of Chelles. The two women authored a letter to Alcuin of York, who was at Tours at the time, requesting that he write a commentary explaining the Gospel of John. As a result, Alcuin eventually produced his seven-book Commentaria in Iohannem Evangelistam, a more accessible companion to the gospel than St. Augustine's massive and challenging Tractatus in St. John. Commentators have dated the letter to the spring of 800, four years before Alcuin's death and ten before Rotrude's. In contemporary views of history, most scholars discriminate between the two phases of Rotrude's life. Political histories of her father Charlemagne discuss her as a princess who was potentially a pawn and a woman of questionable morals, while religious histories discuss her as the second nun in the letter from Chelles. Er kam um 800 an den Hof Karls des Großen Ihre Kinder waren Ludwig (* um 800; † 867), den späteren Abt von Saint-Denis und Kanzler Karls des Kahlen Adaltrud, ∞ Gerhard, Herzog der Auvergne ------------ “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “CHARLEMAGNE, King of the Franks, 768-814, King of the Langobards, 773-814, Emperor of the Romans, 800-814, son of Pépin (nicknamed "le Bref”), King of the Franks, by Bertrade, daughter of Charibert, Count of Laon.
