- Life Sketch: Eutropia (d. after 325), a woman of Syrian origin, was the wife of Emperor Maximian
- Title Of Nobility: Imperatrix of Rome
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - Eutropia (died after 325), a woman of Syrian origin, was the wife of Emperor Maximian. Marriage to Maximian and their children: In the late 3rd century, she married Maximian, though the exact date of this marriage is uncertain. By Maximian, she had two children, a boy, Maxentius (c. 276-312), who was Western Roman Emperor from 306–312 and a girl, Fausta (c. 290), who was wife of Constantine the Great, and mother of six children by him, including the Augusti Constantine II, Constantius II and Constans. Another daughter- There is some doubt as to whether Flavia Maximiana Theodora, who married Constantius I Chlorus, was a daughter of Eutropia by an earlier husband, Afranius Hannibalianus[1] or whether she was a daughter of Maximian by an earlier anonymous wife.[2] *********************

- Father: Flavius Felix patricius of Rome
- Mother: Padusia DE NARBONNE
- Birth: BET 395 AND 405
- Occupation: Proconsul of Africa, BET 420 AND 430
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Felix Ennodius (AD 400 – before 461) was Proconsul of Africa c. 420 or 423. He may have been the son of Flavius Constantius Felix (380 – 430), consul in 428, who married Padusia and was an ancestor of Felix, consul in 511. His mother (b. 385) was a daughter of Agricola, consul in 421, perhaps the father of the emperor Avitus. Ennodius' paternal grandfather may have been Ennodius, an earlier proconsul of Africa. Descendants He was the father of: 1) Ennodius (perhaps) (CRP 458), the father of Cynegia? 2) Camillus (430 – 461 or 479), vir illustris at Arelate, in 461, who might have been the father of Camilla (relative of Magnus Felix Ennodius),[1] the mother of: ..., a clergyman at Arelate 3) a daughter (perhaps) (d. 490) at Aquileia 4) Firminus (perhaps) (435 – circa 485), nobilissimus at Arelate, who might have been the father of three daughters and one son: a) Euprepia (b. 465 or 470), the mother of: I) Flavius Licerius II) Firminus Lupicinus b) a daughter c) a daughter (b. 465), the mother of: I) Parthenius (485 – 548), a patron in 542, married to Papianilla (490 – ca 530), the daughter of Agricola (440 – after 507), vir illustris, a priest and the son of Avitus; Parthenius and Papianilla may have been related d) Magnus Felix Ennodius (473 or 474 – 521), Bishop of Pavia in 514
- Death: 461, Narbonne, Gallia Aquitainia, Gaul, Roman Empire

- LifeSketch: Fionn mac Cumhaill (/ˈfɪn məˈkuːl/ fin mək-KOOL;[a] Old and Middle Irish: Find or Finn[1][2] mac Cumail or Umaill, usually rendered as Finn McCool or Finn MacCool in English) was an Irish mythical hunter-warrior in Irish mythology, occurring also in the mythologies of Scotland and the Isle of Man. The stories of Fionn and his followers, the Fianna, form the Fenian Cycle (an Fhiannaíocht), much of it narrated in the voice of Fionn's son, the poet Oisín. Fionn's birth and early adventures are recounted in the narrative The Boyhood Deeds of Fionn and other sources. Finn was the posthumous son of Cumhall, leader of the Fianna by Muirne.[6] Finn and his father Cumhall mac Trénmhoir ("son of Trénmór") stem from Leinster, rooted in the tribe of Uí Thairsig ("the Descendants of Tairsiu")[7][8] There is mention of the Uí Thairsig in the Lebor Gabála Érenn as one of the three tribes descended from the Fir Bolg.[9] The mother was called Muirne Muincháem "of the Fair Neck"[10] (or "of the Lovely Neck",[11] or "Muiren smooth-neck"[12]), the daughter or Tadg mac Nuadat (in Fotha Catha Chnucha) and granddaughter of Nuadat the druid serving Cathair Mór who was high-king at the time,[14][10] though she is described as granddaughter of Núadu of the Tuatha Dé Danann according to another source (Acallam na Senórach).[7] Cumhall served Conn Cétchathach "of the Hundre Battles" who was still a regional king at Cenandos (Kells, Co. Meath).[10][15] Cumhall abducted Muirne after her father refused him her hand, so Tadg appealed to the high king Conn, who outlawed Cumhall. The Battle of Cnucha was fought between Conn and Cumhall, and Cumhall was killed by Goll mac Morna,[10] who took over leadership of the Fianna. The feud[edit] The Fianna were a band of warriors also known as a military order composed mainly of the members of two rival clans, "Clan Bascna" (to which Finn and Cumall belonged) and "Clan Morna" (where Goll mac Morna belonged), the Fenians were supposed to be devoted to the service of the High King and to the repelling of foreign invaders.[16] After the fall of Cumall, Goll mac Morna replaced him as the leader of the Fianna,[17] holding the position for 10 years.[18] Birth[edit] Muirne was already pregnant; her father rejected her and ordered his people to burn her, but Conn would not allow it and put her under the protection of Fiacal mac Conchinn, whose wife, Bodhmall the druid, was Cumhall's sister. In Fiacal's house Muirne gave birth to a son, whom she called Deimne (/ˈdeɪni/; Irish pronunciation: [dʲeβ̃nʲi]),[19] literally "sureness" or "certainty", also a name that means a young male deer; several legends tell how he gained the name Fionn when his hair turned prematurely white. Boyhood[edit] Fionn and his brother Tulcha mac Cumhal were being hunted down by the Goll and siblings (the sons of Morna) and other men. Consequently, Finn was separated from his mother Muirne, and placed in the care of Bodhmall and the woman Liath Luachra ("Grey of Luachra"), and they brought him up in secret in the forest of Sliabh Bladma, teaching him the arts of war and hunting. After the age of six, Finn learned to hunt, but still had cause to flee from the sons of Morna.[20] As he grew older he entered the service – incognito – of a number of local kings, but each one, when he recognised Fionn as Cumhal's son, told him to leave, fearing they would be unable to protect him from his enemies. Fionn was a keen hunter and often hunted with Na Fianna on the hill of Allen in County Kildare, it is believed by many in the area that Fionn originally caught the Salmon of Knowledge in the River Slate that flows through Ballyteague. The secret to his success there after when catching “fish of knowledge” was to always cast from the Ballyteague side of a river. He gains what commentators have called the "Thumb of Knowledge"[b] after eating a certain salmon, thought to be the Salmon of Wisdom.[22][23] The account of this is given in The Boyhood Deeds of Fionn.[24] Young Fionn, still known by the boyhood Demne, met the poet Finn Éces (Finnegas), near the river Boyne and studied under him. Finnegas had spent seven years trying to catch the salmon that lived in Fec's Pool (Old Irish: Linn Féic) of the Boyne, for it was prophesied the poet would eat this salmon, and "nothing would remain unknown to him".[24] Although this salmon is not specifically called the "Salmon of Knowledge", etc., in the text, it is presumed to be so, i.e., the salmon that fed on the nut[s] of knowledge at Segais.[22] Eventually the poet caught it, and told the boy to cook it for him. While he was cooking it, Demne burned his thumb, and instinctively put his thumb in his mouth. This imbued him with the salmon's wisdom, and when Éces saw that he had gained wisdom, he gave the youngster the whole salmon to eat, and gave Demne the new name, Fionn.[24] Thereafter, whenever he recited the teinm láida with his thumb in his mouth, the knowledge he wished to gain was revealed to him.[24][c] In subsequent events in his life, Finn was able to call on ability of the "Thumb of Knowledge", and Fionn then knew how to gain revenge against Goll.[citation needed] In the Acallam na Sénorach, the ability is referred to as "The Tooth of Wisdom" or "Tooth of Knowledge" (Old Irish: dét fis).[21] Finn's acquisition of the Thumb of Knowledge has been likened to the Welsh Gwion Bach tasting the Cauldron of Knowledge,[26] and Sigurðr Fáfnisbani tasting Fáfnir's heart.[27][28] One feat of Fionn performed at 10 years of age according to the Acallam na Senórach was to slay Áillen (or [d]), the fire-breathing man of the Tuatha Dé Danann, who had came to wreak destruction on the Irish capital of Tara every year on the festival of Samhain for the past 23 years, lulling the city's men to sleep with his music then burned down the city and its treasures.[29] When the King of Ireland asked what men would guard Tara against Áillen's invasion, Fionn volunteered.[e] Fionn obtained a special spear (the "Birga") from Fiacha mac Congha ("son of Conga"), which warded against the sleep-inducing music of Áillen's "dulcimer" (Old Irish: timpán)[f] when it was unsheathed and the bare steel blade was touched against the forehead or some other part of the body. This Fiacha used to be one of Cumall's men, but was now serving the high-king.[32] After Fionn defeated Áillen and saved Tara, his heritage was recognised and he was given command of the Fianna: Goll stepped aside, and became a loyal follower of Fionn,[33][34] although a dispute later broke out between the clans over the pig of Slanga.[35] Before Finn completed the feat of defeating the firebrand of the fairy mound and defending Tara, he is described as a ten-year-old "marauder and an outlaw".[36] It is also stated elsewhere that when Finn grew up to become "capable of committing plunder on everyone who was an enemy", he went to his maternal grandfather Tadg to demand compensation (éric) for his father's death, on pain of single combat, and Tadg acceded by relinquishing the estate of Almu (the present-day Hill of Allen). Finn was also paid éric by Goll mac Morna.[35][g] Fionn met his most famous wife, Sadhbh, when he was out hunting. She had been turned into a deer by a druid, Fear Doirich, whom she had refused to marry. Fionn's hounds, Bran and Sceólang, born of a human enchanted into the form of a hound, recognised her as human, and Fionn brought her home. She transformed back into a woman the moment she set foot on Fionn's land, as this was the one place she could regain her true form. She and Fionn married and she was soon pregnant. When Fionn was away defending his country, Fear Doirich (literally meaning Dark Man) returned and turned her back into a deer, whereupon she vanished. Fionn spent years searching for her, but to no avail. Bran and Sceólang, again hunting, found her son, Oisín, in the form of a fawn; he transformed into a child, and went on to be one of the greatest of the Fianna. In The Pursuit of Diarmuid and Gráinne the High King Cormac mac Airt promises the aging Fionn his daughter Gráinne, but at the wedding feast Gráinne falls for one of the Fianna, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, noted for his beauty. She forces him to run away with her and Fionn pursues them. The lovers are helped by the Fianna, and by Diarmuid's foster-father, the god Aengus. Eventually Fionn makes his peace with the couple. Years later, however, Fionn invites Diarmuid on a boar hunt, and Diarmuid is gored. Water drunk from Fionn's hands has the power of healing, but each time Fionn gathers water he lets it run through his fingers before he gets back to Diarmuid. His grandson Oscar shames Fionn, but when he finally returns with water it is too late; Diarmuid has died. According to the most popular account of Fionn's death, he is not dead at all, rather, he sleeps in a cave, surrounded by the Fianna. One day he will awake and defend Ireland in the hour of her greatest need. In one account, it is said that he will arise when the Dord Fiann, the hunting horn of the Fianna, is sounded three times, and he will be as strong and as well as he ever was. Many geographical features in Ireland are attributed to Fionn. Legend has it he built the Giant's Causeway as stepping-stones to Scotland, so as not to get his feet wet; he also once scooped up part of Ireland to fling it at a rival, but it missed and landed in the Irish Sea — the clump became the Isle of Man and the pebble became Rockall, the void became Lough Neagh. In Ayrshire, Scotland a common myth is that Ailsa Craig, a small islet just off coast of the said county, is another rock thrown at the fleeing Benandonner. The islet being referred to as paddys' mile stone in Ayrshire. Fingal's Cave in Scotland is also named after him, and shares the feature of hexagonal basalt columns with the nearby Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. In both Irish and Manx popular folklore,[39] Fionn mac Cumhail (known as "Finn McCool" or "F

- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Galla was the sister of the consul Neratius Cerealis and of the praetorian prefect Vulcacius Rufinus.[1] **** [Vulcacius Rufinus (died 368) was a Roman politician, related to the Constantinian dynasty. Biography of Vulcacius Rufinus A pagan, Rufinus was the brother of Neratius Cerealis, Galla (the mother of Constantius Gallus), and the mother of Maximus. He was pontifex maximus, consularis for Numidia, comes ordinis primi intra consistorium under the Emperor Constans I or his brother Constantius II, comes per Orientem, Aegypti et Mesopotamiae per easdem vice sacra iudicans from 5 April 342, praetorian prefect of Italy from 344 to 347 (between the prefectures of Fulvius Placidus and Ulpius Limenius), consul ordinarius prior in 347 with Flavius Eusebius, praetorian prefect of Illyricum between 347 and 352. While he was prefect, he was sent as an envoy by the usurper Magnentius, who had ousted Constans, to Constantius II, along with Marcellinus, Maximus and Nunechius. Rufinus was not arrested, unlike his companions, and kept the prefecture of Illyricum under Constantius. In 354, after the fall of Magnentius, he was praetorian prefect of Gaul, living in the capital Trier, but was replaced by Gaius Ceionius Rufius Volusianus Lampadius, perhaps because Rufinus was a relative of Constantius Gallus, when Gallus fell into disgrace with the Emperor. Between 365 and 368 he was the praetorian prefect for Italy and Africa, succeeding Claudius Mamertinus and of Gaul from 366 to 368. He died in service.] **** She married Julius Constantius, son of Constantius Chlorus and half-brother of Emperor Constantine I. From their union a son was born, who died with his father in the purges of 337,[2] a daughter who married his cousin Constantius II,[3] and finally Constantius Gallus, later Caesar of the East, born around 325.[4] It has been proposed that Galla and Julius had another daughter, born between 324 and 331 and married to Justus, father of Justina (wife of emperor Valentinian I), whose daughter (wife of emperor Theodosius I) was called Galla.[5] Galla died before her husband, as Gallus was then entrusted to the care of Eusebius, bishop of Nicomedia.[6]

- Constantius Chlorus -family: Constantius put aside his wife Helena and married Theodora, the daughter, or perhaps stepdaughter, of Maximianus Herculius.. The union was fruitful and of it there were six issue: Flavius Dalmatius, Julius Constantius, Hannibalianus, Constantia, Anastasia, and Eutropia. To strengthen his bond with Galerius and Diocletian in the east, Constantius allowed Galerius to keep his son Constantine as a hostage for his good behavior.[[2]]
- LifeSketch: Encyclopedia of Roman Emperors - Theodora was the eldest daughter, or perhaps stepdaughter, of Maximianus Herculius and his wife Eutropia. In order to strengthen the dynastic relationship between himself and Herculius when Maximianus Herculius appointed him as his Caesar (junior emperor) in the west with the right of succession on 1 March 293, Constantius I put aside his wife Helena and married Theodora. She bore him six children: Flavius Dalmatius, Julius Constantius, Hannibalianus, Constantia, Anastasia, and Eutropia. Wikipedia - Flavia Maximiana Theodora, also known as Theodora, was a Roman Empress, wife of Constantius Chlorus. She is often referred to as a stepdaughter of Emperor Maximian by ancient sources, leading to claims by historians Otto Seeck and Ernest Stein that she was born from an earlier marriage between Eutropia, wife of Maximian, and Afranius Hannibalianus.[1] This man was consul in 292 and praetorian prefect under Diocletian. Timothy Barnes challenges this view stating that all "stepdaughter sources" derive their information from the partially unreliable work Kaisergeschichte (written in the 4th century), while more reliable sources refer Theodora as Maximian's natural daughter.[2] He concludes that she was born no later than c. 275 to an unnamed earlier wife of Maximian, possibly one of Hannibalianus' daughters.[3] In 293[citation needed], Theodora married Flavius Valerius Julius Constantius (later known as Constantius Chlorus), after he had divorced from his first wife, Helena, to strengthen his political position. The couple had six children: Flavius Dalmatius; Julius Constantius, father of Roman Emperor Julian and of the unnamed wife of Constantius II; Hannibalianus; Anastasia, who was to marry Bassianus; Flavia Julia Constantia, wife of Roman Emperor Licinius; Eutropia, mother of Nepotianus. Note: both sources agree that Maximian was the father of Flavia Maximianus Theodora. Eutropia would have been just 13 years old at the time of Theodora's birth. She did not marry Maximian until 380, 17 years after Theodora was born. And she married Afranius Hannibalinius first. Given Maximian's behavior and lustful proclivities, it is doubtful he fathered no children before his 30th birthday.....

- Birth: ABT 360
- Also known as: Full name: Flavius Claudius Constantinus
- Also known as: Regnal name: Imperator Caesar Flavius Claudius Constantius Augustus
- Also known as: Constantine II of Britain
- Title Of Nobility: declared himself Western Roman Emperor in Britannia and established himself in Gaul
- Dissatisfied with the inability of Emperor Honorius to contain the threat from the: Vandals, Alans, and Suevi crossing the Rhine, the Roman army elected Emperor Constantine, who established his base at Arles.
- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia - His full name was Flavius Claudius Constantinus. He was Emperor of Rome (Britain, Gaul and Spain) (407). He was a Roman general who declared himself Western Roman Emperor in 407, abdicated in 411, and was captured and executed shortly afterwards. Some modern scholars speculate he might have been the Constantine who was son of the Roman usurper Magnus Clemens Maximus, executed in 388. Roman troops in Britain elevated him to the position of Emperor following the deposition and murder of Marcus and Gratian, other British claimants. He was acclaimed Emperor in Britain, crossed into Gaul, established his capital at Arles, and in 408 extended his authority to Spain. In 409, he was recognized as Augustus by Honorius, the Emperor in Rome. In 410, the Visigoths sacked Rome. Constantine's general Gerontius then switched sides and, with the help of another rival emperor, Maximus, took Spain and parts of Gaul. In Britain, the local nobility appealed to Honorius for help, but help was declined and Honorius advised the Britons to defend themselves. Constantine was besieged in Arles. He surrendered and was executed. Orosius gives an account of events in Spain: "To oppose [his rivals, the brothers Didymus and Verinianus], Constantine sent into Spain his son Constans, who, shameful to say, had been transformed from a monk into a Caesar. With him Constantine sent certain barbarians, who had at one time been received as allies and drawn into military service, and who were called Honoriaci. They were the cause of the first misfortune that befell Spain. After killing the brothers who were trying to defend the Pyrenean Alps with their private forces, these barbarians received permission to plunder the plains of Pallantia as a reward for their victory. Later, after the removal of the faithful and efficient peasant guard, they were entrusted with the defense of the mountains just mentioned and their passes. These Honoriaci, having had a taste of plunder and being allured by its abundance, planned to secure both freedom from punishment for their crimes and a wider scope for their wickedness. Therefore they betrayed their watch over the Pyrenees, left the passes open, and so loosed upon the provinces of Spain all the nations that were wandering through Gaul and even joined them. There, after engaging for some time in bloody raids and inflicting serious damage upon people and property (for which they themselves are now sorry), and after a division had been made of what had been taken, they have remained in possession of their share to the present day." [ÙCiÙDHistories Against the PagansÙC/iÙD, 7.40.] Gregory of Tours, citing Renatus, gives an account of the final sequence of events: "The usurper Constantine summoned his son Constans, also a usurper, from Spain to consult with him on affairs of state. And so Constans left the paraphernalia of his court and his wife at Saragossa and, entrusting all his interests in Spain to Gerontius, traveled without a pause to meet his father. When they met and a good number of days passed without any bad news from Italy, Constantine gave himself over to gluttony and drunkenness and told his son to return to Spain. Constans had sent his forces on ahead and was staying behind with his father when news came from Spain that one of his dependents, Maximus, had been made emperor by Gerontius and was arming himself with a following of barbarian peoples. Taking fright at this news, Constans and Decimius Rusticus, now prefect but formerly master of the offices, sent Edobech on ahead to the peoples of Germania, and they themselves set out for the Gallic provinces, intending to return right away to Constantine with Franks, Alemanni, and all available soldiers . . . . [The siege here is that of Arles in 411. Honorius's forces were commanded by Constantius. Jovinus was proclaimed emperor in 411 and beheaded in 412.] "The siege of Constantine was just entering its fourth month when news suddenly arrived from Farther Gaul that Jovinus had assumed the imperial insignia and was threatening the besiegers with Burgundians, Alemanni, Franks, Alans, and all his forces. Siege operations were expedited, the gates were opened, and Constantine was given up. He was immediately sent to Italy, but he was met by executioners sent by the emperor and beheaded on the river Mincio. . . . "In those same days Decimius Rusticus, prefect of the usurpers, Agroetius, formerly chief of the secretaries of Jovinus, and many nobles were captured in the Auvergne by the generals of Honorius and cruelly put to death. The city of Trier was plundered and burned by the Franks; this was their second attack." Was imprisoned by General Constantius, who had him beheaded on his way to Ravenna.

- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Julian[i] (Latin: Flavius Claudius Julianus; Greek: Ἰουλιανός; 331 – 26 June 363) was Roman emperor from 361 to 363, as well as a notable philosopher and author in Greek.[2] His rejection of Christianity, and his promotion of Neoplatonic Hellenism in its place, caused him to be remembered as Julian the Apostate by the Christian Church.[3][4] A member of the Constantinian dynasty, Julian was orphaned as a child. He was raised by the Gothic slave Mardonius, who had a profound influence on him, providing Julian with an excellent education.[5] Julian became caesar over the western provinces by order of Constantius II in 355, and in this role he campaigned successfully against the Alamanni and Franks. Most notable was his crushing victory over the Alamanni at the Battle of Argentoratum (Strasbourg) in 357, leading his 13,000 men against a Germanic army three times larger. In 360, Julian was proclaimed Augustus by his soldiers at Lutetia (Paris), sparking a civil war with Constantius. However, Constantius died before the two could face each other in battle, and named Julian as his successor. In 363, Julian embarked on an ambitious campaign against the Sasanian Empire. The campaign was initially successful, securing a victory outside Ctesiphon in Mesopotamia.[6] However, he did not attempt to besiege the capital and moved into Persia's heartland, but soon faced supply problems and was forced to retreat northwards while ceaselessly being harassed by Persian skirmishes. During the Battle of Samarra, Julian was mortally wounded under mysterious circumstances.[7][5] He was succeeded by Jovian, a senior officer in the imperial guard, who was obliged to cede territory, including Nisibis, in order to save the trapped Roman forces.[8] Julian was a man of unusually complex character: he was "the military commander, the theosophist, the social reformer, and the man of letters".[9] He was the last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire, and he believed that it was necessary to restore the Empire's ancient Roman values and traditions in order to save it from dissolution.[10] He purged the top-heavy state bureaucracy, and attempted to revive traditional Roman religious practices at the expense of Christianity. His attempt to build a Third Temple in Jerusalem was probably intended to harm Christianity rather than please Jews.[5] Julian also forbade the Christians from teaching and learning classical texts.[11] Early life Flavius Claudius Julianus was born at Constantinople in 331,[12] the son of Julius Constantius,[13] consul in 335 and half-brother of the emperor Constantine, by his second wife, Basilina, a woman of Greek origin.[14][15] Both of his parents were Christians. Julian's paternal grandparents were the emperor Constantius Chlorus and his second wife, Flavia Maximiana Theodora. His maternal grandfather was Julius Julianus, Praetorian Prefect of the East under the emperor Licinius from 315 to 324, and consul suffectus in 325.[16] The name of Julian's maternal grandmother is unknown. In the turmoil after the death of Constantine in 337, in order to establish himself and his brothers, Julian's zealous Arian cousin Constantius II appears to have led a massacre of most of Julian's close relatives. Constantius II allegedly ordered the murders of many descendants from the second marriage of Constantius Chlorus and Theodora, leaving only Constantius and his brothers Constantine II and Constans I, and their cousins, Julian and Constantius Gallus (Julian's half-brother), as the surviving males related to Emperor Constantine. Constantius II, Constans I, and Constantine II were proclaimed joint emperors, each ruling a portion of Roman territory. Julian and Gallus were excluded from public life, were strictly guarded in their youth, and given a Christian education. They were likely saved by their youth and at the urging of the Empress Eusebia. If Julian's later writings are to be believed, Constantius would later be tormented with guilt at the massacre of 337. Initially growing up in Bithynia, raised by his maternal grandmother, at the age of seven Julian was under the guardianship of Eusebius, the semi-Arian Christian Bishop of Nicomedia, and taught by Mardonius, a Gothic eunuch, about whom he later wrote warmly. After Eusebius died in 342, both Julian and Gallus were exiled to the imperial estate of Macellum in Cappadocia. Here Julian met the Christian bishop George of Cappadocia, who lent him books from the classical tradition. At the age of 18, the exile was lifted and he dwelt briefly in Constantinople and Nicomedia.[17] He became a lector, a minor office in the Christian church, and his later writings show a detailed knowledge of the Bible, likely acquired in his early life.[18] Julian's conversion from Christianity to paganism happened at around the age of 20. Looking back on his life in 362, Julian wrote that he had spent twenty years in the way of Christianity and twelve in the true way, i.e., the way of Helios.[19] Julian began his study of Neoplatonism in Asia Minor in 351, at first under Aedesius, the philosopher, and then Aedesius' student Eusebius of Myndus. It was from Eusebius that Julian learned of the teachings of Maximus of Ephesus, whom Eusebius criticized for his more mystical form of Neoplatonic theurgy. Eusebius related his meeting with Maximus, in which the theurgist invited him into the temple of Hecate and, chanting a hymn, caused a statue of the goddess to smile and laugh, and her torches to ignite. Eusebius reportedly told Julian that he "must not marvel at any of these things, even as I marvel not, but rather believe that the thing of the highest importance is that purification of the soul which is attained by reason." In spite of Eusebius' warnings regarding the "impostures of witchcraft and magic that cheat the senses" and "the works of conjurers who are insane men led astray into the exercise of earthly and material powers", Julian was intrigued, and sought out Maximus as his new mentor. According to the historian Eunapius, when Julian left Eusebius, he told his former teacher "farewell, and devote yourself to your books. You have shown me the man I was in search of."[20] Constantine II died in 340 when he attacked his brother Constans. Constans in turn fell in 350 in the war against the usurper Magnentius. This left Constantius II as the sole remaining emperor. In need of support, in 351 he made Julian's half-brother, Gallus, caesar of the East, while Constantius II himself turned his attention westward to Magnentius, whom he defeated decisively that year. In 354 Gallus, who had imposed a rule of terror over the territories under his command, was executed. Julian was summoned to Constantius' court in Mediolanum (Milan) in 354, and held for a year, under suspicion of treasonable intrigue, first with his brother and then with Claudius Silvanus; he was cleared, in part because Empress Eusebia intervened on his behalf, and he was permitted to study in Athens (Julian expresses his gratitude to the empress in his third oration).[21] While there, Julian became acquainted with two men who later became both bishops and saints: Gregory of Nazianzus and Basil the Great. In the same period, Julian was also initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries, which he would later try to restore. Caesar in Gaul After dealing with the rebellions of Magnentius and Silvanus, Constantius felt he needed a permanent representative in Gaul. In 355, Julian was summoned to appear before the emperor in Mediolanum and on 6 November was made caesar of the West, marrying Constantius' sister, Helena. Constantius, after his experience with Gallus, intended his representative to be more a figurehead than an active participant in events, so he packed Julian off to Gaul with a small retinue, assuming his prefects in Gaul would keep Julian in check. At first reluctant to trade his scholarly life for war and politics, Julian eventually took every opportunity to involve himself in the affairs of Gaul.[22] In the following years he learned how to lead and then run an army, through a series of campaigns against the Germanic tribes that had settled on both sides of the Rhine.

- Murdered in Italy along with his wife: Perhaps on the orders of Aetius
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Flavius Felix (died 430) was a general of the Western Roman Empire, who reached the prominent rank of patrician before being killed probably by order of Flavius Aetius. For his consulate, in 428, he issued some consular diptychs, one of which has been preserved until modern times. Felix served during the reign of emperors Valentinian III and Theodosius II. Between 425 (year in which he was made patricius) and 429 he served as magister utriusque militae in defense of Italy, but despite a brief mention of one of his military actions in the Notitia Dignitatum, his subordinates Bonifacius and Flavius Aetius were considered more significant in this regard.[1] In 426 he ordered the death of Patroclus, bishop of Arelate, and of Titus, deacon in Rome. The following year he opposed Bonifacius' rebellion in Northern Africa sending some troops to this province. This force was defeated by the troops loyal to Bonifacius.[2] In 428 he was elected consul for the West. In May 430, Felix, his wife Padusia and a deacon named Grunnitus were murdered in Basilica Ursiana in Ravenna for reasons that are not clear.[3] Priscus suggests Felix was accused of plotting against Aetius with the emperor's mother Galla Placidia and was killed by order of Aetius himself.[4] His carved ivory consular diptych is notable for depicting his clothing in great detail. The diptych, believed to be the earliest yet known,[5] survived intact until the French Revolution, when the right leaf was stolen; it is now believed lost.[6] According to a recent reconstruction of his familial bonds, he was an ancestor of Felix, Consul in 511, and a son of Ennodius. Born about 380 he might have been the man who was the husband of a daughter (born 385) of Agricola, Consul of Rome in 421 and perhaps the father of Emperor Avitus, being the parents of Magnus, Consul of Rome in 460 and Felix Ennodius, Proconsul in Africa in ca 420 or 423.[7]

- LifeSketch: From Wikipedia - Agricola, full name possibly Julius Agricola (c. 365 – after 421) was a West Roman statesman who served twice as praetorian prefect and became consul for Gaul of the Western Roman Empire in 421.[1] Life He was from Gaul Narbo.[2] His familial relations are unclear: the names of Agricola's parents are unknown, as is the name of his wife, and the names of his children. He may have had a son named Nymphidius. He was the grandfather of Flavius Magnus, consul in 460. He was also a relative, perhaps even the father, of the Emperor Avitus (r. 455–456).[2] He served twice as praetorian prefect. His first tenure was sometime before 418, but the exact circumscription is unknown; it was most probably in the Western half of the Empire however.[2] The second time Agricola served as praetorian prefect of Gaul was in 418. He presided over the initial annual concilium of the Gauls. This assembly had been founded by a previous praetorian prefect, Petronius, but it had stopped meeting due to the revolt of Constantine III.[3] *** (insert separate article) >The Council of the Seven Provinces (Concilium septem provinciarum) was a governing body of the Seven Provinces (Septem Provinciae) in the praetorian prefecture of Gaul, then part of the Western Roman Empire. Between its establishment in 418 and its demise in the 460s, it met annually in Arles between mid-August and mid-September. Its members belonged to the Gallo-Roman aristocracy, including the bishops. The original annual council was established by the praetorian prefect Petronius in 402 (or 408), perhaps in connection with a fifteen-year tax assessment. The council was re-founded by the Constitutio saluberrima[1] issued by the emperor Honorius on 17 April 418 at Ravenna, capital of the Western Empire. The Constitutio was directed to the prefect of Gaul, Agricola. According to Honorius, the council was convened "on account of public and private necessities" (propter privatus ac publicas neccesitates) because the previous council had fallen defunct "either because of the indifference of the times or the neglect of usurpers" (vel incuria temporum, vel desidia tyrannorum).[2] Although the council has been blamed for encouraging Gallic particularism, Honorius intended merely to return to the situation before the upheavals of 407–13. From this point on, however, high offices in Gaul usually fell to Gallo-Romans and not, as previously, Italians.[3] The public acclamation of Avitus as emperor took place in Arles on 9 July 455. The historians Edward Gibbon and J. B. Bury believed that the acclamation took place at a regular meeting of the Concilium, but this has been rejected on the grounds that Avitus arrived in Arles at the wrong time of year for this, that the public meeting include representatives from outside the Seven Provinces and that Sidonius Apollinaris records that the meeting was arranged specifically to greet Avitus.[4] In 472, the council indicted the praetorian prefect Arvandus and sent him to the Senate to be tried.[5] -Wikipedia -Concillium of the Gauls-< *** back to original article: The last office Agricola is recorded holding is the consulship for 421, with Fl. Eustathius as the parallel officeholder in the East.[4]

He was a Roman Senator of Narbonne (then Narbo), Consul of Rome with Flavius Apollonius in 460 and the praetorian prefect of Gaul in 469. Family His father, born ca 380, might have been the son of Ennodius, Proconsul of Africa. He might have been Flavius Felix (380 – 430), Consul of Rome in 428, who married Padusia and was allegedly an ancestor of Felix, Consul in 511. His mother (b. 385) was a daughter of Flavius Julius Agricola, Consul of Rome in 421 and father of Emperor Avitus. He was the father of: 1) Magnus Felix (430 – after 469), a Patron in 469, married to Attica (b. 440), perhaps the parents of: a son or a daughter (b. 460 or 465), who begot: Flavius Arcadius Placidus Magnus Felix, Consul of Rome in 511 2) Araneola (b. 435 or 440), married to Polemius, perhaps them the parents of: a son or a daughter (b. 460 or 465), who begot: Flavius Arcadius Placidus Magnus Felix, Consul of Rome in 511 3) Flavius Probus, a Roman Senator Ennodius (perhaps) (CRP 458), the father of Cynegia?

- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Flavius Philagrius (Greek: Φλαούιος Φιλάγριος; fl. 335–350) was a Roman state official under the emperors Constantine I and his son Constantius II. He served two terms as governor of Egypt (335–37 and 338–40), and finally as governor of Pontus in northern Anatolia. During his term of office in Egypt, he threatened and helped exile the trinitarian bishop of Alexandria, Athanasius, on behalf of the Arians, and throughout his career he acted in support of the Arian cause against adherents of the creed of Nicaea. Biography Flavius Philagrius (Φλαούιος Φιλάγριος)[1] was a native of Cappadocia,[2] and apparently belonged to an upper-class family, for, like other members of the elite in the eastern Roman provinces, he studied at Athens.[3] Before 335 he served as a rationalis, a senior fiscal official. In 335 the Emperor Constantine appointed Philagrius as prefect (governor) of Egypt. He was the first man of senatorial rank to hold that office; the previous holders had all belonged to the equestrian order.[4] That year, Philagrius, an Arian, assisted the Synod of Tyre in its proceedings against Athanasius, the trinitarian bishop of Alexandria. Athanasius accused Philagrius of obtaining evidence against him by threatening witnesses.[5] As prefect Philagrius probably oversaw a general collection of corn to supply Constantine's abortive invasion of Persia in 337,[3] though he seems to have left office already before the Emperor's death on 22 May.[6] He was reappointed in 338 by Constantine's son, Constantius II, to carry out the deposition of Athanasius and further the interests of the Arian party there.[4] The prefect removed Athanasius from his see in March 339 (though he failed to arrest him) and replaced him with the fellow Cappadocian Gregory.[7] Philagrius responded to resistance in the city by plundering and setting ablaze a church belonging to the former bishop's adherents.[8] In 343–344 Philagrius is attested as a comes at the court of Emperor Constantius. Following the ecumenical council of Serdica in 343, he used his position to support the Arians at Philippopolis and Adrianople in Thrace.[2] Later in the decade he served as governor of Bithynia and Capaddocia (vicar of Pontica),[4] with his main role there being to maintain local supply lines for the war against Persia in the eastern border.[3] In 348, during his term of office, he helped the famous Antiochene rhetor Libanius in a lawsuit, and from then on the two became friends.[9] He was still in office in 350, when Paul, a former bishop of Constantinople whom the Emperor had banished, died at Cucusus (Göksun), in his province. Philagrius was married, and died before 358. He had a brother who served as governor (praeses) of Augustamnica in Egypt.[4]

- Gallia Narbonensis: Emperor Diocletian's administrative reorganization of the Empire in c. AD 314 merged the provinces Gallia Narbonensis and Gallia Aquitania into a new administrative unit called Dioecesis Viennensis (Diocese of Vienne) with the capital more to the north in Vienne. The new diocese's name was later changed to Dioecesis Septem Provinciarum (Diocese of the Seven Provinces), indicating that Diocletian had demoted the word "province" to mean a smaller subdivision than in traditional usage. Galla Narbonensis and surrounding areas were incorporated into the Visigothic Kingdom between AD 462 and 477, permanently ending Roman political control. After the Gothic takeover, the Visigothic dominions were to be generally known as Septimania, while to the east of the lower Rhone the term Provence came into use.
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia- Flavius Probus (born c. 420, 430 or 435), a Roman Senator and a v. nob. (vir nobilis) of Narbonne, then Narbo, was a man of literary taste and precocious ability. His father was Flavius Magnus, Consul of Rome in 460. He was a friend of Sidonius Apollinaris from their schooldays. He married before 450 Eulalia (?), born c. 425, a cousin of Sidonius Apollinaris, daughter of Thaumastus. They were perhaps the parents of: Industria of Narbonne, then Narbo, born c. 450 or 465, married before 475 to Tonantius Ferreolus Firminus (455 or 460 – c. 503), v. inl. at Arles, then Arelate, and a propinq. of Magnus Felix Ennodius Probatius (certain son), Bishop of Uzès in 506
