- LifeSketch: Arrival of the Bretons Map of British settlements in the 6th century. In the 380s, a large number of Britons in the Roman army may have been stationed in Armorica. The 9th century Historia Brittonum states that the emperor Magnus Maximus, who withdrew Roman forces from Britania, settled the troops there. Other British and Welsh authors (Nennius and Gildas) mention a second wave of South-Western Britons from Dumnonia, settling in Armorica in the following century to escape the invading Anglo-Saxons and Irish. Modern archaeology supports a two-wave migration.[6] These Britons gave the region its current name and contributed the Breton language, Brezhoneg, a sister language to Welsh and Cornish. (Brittany used to be known in English as Little Britain to distinguish it from Great Britain). Conan Meriadoc, the mythic founder of the house of Rohan, is mentioned by medieval Welsh sources as having led the settlement of Brittany by mercenaries serving Maximus. The Welsh text The Dream of Maxen, which contains semi-factual information about the usurpation of Maximus, states that they married native women after cutting out their tongues to preserve the purity of their language.[7] This can be interpreted as a legend formulated in order to explain the Welsh (Brythonic) name for Brittany, Llydaw, as originating from lled-taw or "half-silent". In fact, the term "Llydaw" or "Ledav" in early Breton probably derives from the Celtic name Litavis. There are numerous records of missionaries migrating from Britania during the second wave, especially the Seven founder-saints of Brittany and Saint Gildas. Many Breton towns are named for these early saints. The Irish saint Colombanus also evangelised Brittany, commemorated at Saint-Columban in Carnac. The earliest text known in the Breton language, a botanical treatise, dates from 590 (for comparison, the earliest text in French dates from 843).[8] Most of the early Breton language medieval manuscripts were lost during the Viking invasions. The Petty Kingdoms In the Early Middle Ages, Brittany was divided into three kingdoms – Domnonia (Devnent), (Devon) Cornouaille (Kernev), (Cornwall) and Bro Waroc'h (Broërec) – which eventually were incorporated into the larger Breton state. The first two kingdoms derive their names from the homelands of the migrating Britons (Devon and Cornwall). Bro Waroc'h ("land of Waroch") derives from the name of one of the first known Breton rulers, who dominated the region of Vannes (Gwened). The rulers of Domnonia such as Conomor sought to expand their territory (including holdings in British Devon and Cornwall), claiming overlordship over all Bretons, though there was constant tension between local lords. Until the early 800's the French area populated by the Bretons was known as Amorica, becoming the Kingdom of Brittany in the early 800's. Therefore any "King of the Bretons was from one of the above mentioned Kingdoms, or Duchys ******************************** Our royal, titled, noble and commoner ancestors Agatha of Brittany Last Edited 4 Apr 2020 F, #9976 Father Alan II (Ohe Long) of Brittany d. 690 Agatha of Brittany married Idwal, Prince of North Wales, King of Gwynedd, son of Cadwallader 'the Blessed', King of Gwynedd. - LifeSketch: Dub mac Maíl Coluim (Modern Gaelic: Dubh mac Mhaoil Chaluim),[1] sometimes anglicised as Duff MacMalcolm,[2] called Dén, "the Vehement"[3] and Niger, "the Black"[4] (born c. 928 - died 967) was king of Alba. He was son of Malcolm I and succeeded to the throne when Indulf was killed in 962. While later chroniclers such as John of Fordun supplied a great deal of information on Dub's life and reign, and Hector Boece in his 'The history and chronicles of Scotland' tell tales of witchcraft and treason, almost all of them are rejected by modern historians. There are very few sources for the reign of Dub, of which the Chronicle of the Kings of Alba and a single entry in the Annals of Ulster are the closest to contemporary. The Chronicle records that during Dub's reign bishop Fothach, most likely bishop of St Andrews or of Dunkeld, died. The remaining report is of a battle between Dub and Cuilén, son of king Ildulb. Dub won the battle, fought "upon the ridge of Crup", in which Duchad, abbot of Dunkeld, sometimes supposed to be an ancestor of Crínán of Dunkeld, and Dubdon, the mormaer of Atholl, died. The various accounts differ on what happened afterwards. The Chronicle claims that Dub was driven out of the kingdom. The Latin material interpolated in Andrew of Wyntoun's Orygynale Cronykl states that he was murdered at Forres, and links this to an eclipse of the sun which can be dated to 20 July 966. The Annals of Ulster report only: "Dub mac Maíl Coluim, king of Alba, was killed by the Scots themselves"; the usual way of reporting a death in internal strife, and place the death in 967. It has been suggested that Sueno's Stone, near Forres, may be a monument to Dub, erected by his brother Kenneth II (Cináed mac Maíl Coluim). It is presumed that Dub was killed or driven out by Cuilén, who became king after Dub's death, or by his supporters. It is related that his body was hidden under the bridge of Kinloss, and the sun did not shine till it was found and buried. An eclipse on 10 July 967 may have originated or confirmed this story.[5] Dub left at least one son, Kenneth III (Cináed mac Dub). Although his descendants did not compete successfully for the kingship of Alba after Cináed was killed in 1005, they did hold the mormaerdom of Fife. The MacDuib (or MacDuff) held the mormaerdom, and later earldom, until 1371.

He was thus later known by the posthumous nickname of An Ferbasach, "The Conqueror".[2] He became the apex and eponym of a dynasty—sometimes called Clann Chináeda—that ruled Scotland from the ninth- to the early eleventh-century. The Fragmentary Annals of Ireland quote a verse lamenting Kenneth's death: "Because Cináed with many troops lives no longer there is weeping in every house; there is no king of his worth under heaven as far as the borders of Rome." Kenneth left at least two sons, Constantine and Áed, who were later kings, and at least two daughters. One daughter married Run, king of Strathclyde, Eochaid being the result of this marriage. Kenneth's daughter Máel Muire married two important Irish kings of the Uí Néill. Her first husband was Aed Finliath of the Cenél nEógain. Niall Glúndub, ancestor of the O'Neill, was the son of this marriage. Her second husband was Flann Sinna of Clann Cholmáin. As the wife and mother of kings, when Máel Muire died in 913, her death was reported by the Annals of Ulster, an unusual thing for the male-centred chronicles of the age. Ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_MacAlpin First King of Scotland (Alba). Born Ciniod MacAlpin, son of Alpin MacEochaid, king of Dalriada, his mother is said to have been a daughter of Achalas, King of Argyllshire, or a Pictish princess. His father was killed in battle against the ruling Picts, and MacAlpin took control of Dalriada. The Picts were later decimated by Viking raids, and taking advantage of this weakness, MacAlpin summoned the remaining Earls of Caledonia to his court. A banquet was held, and when the guests, including the Pictish king, were inebriated, MacAlpin's men slaughtered them. Thus the way was clear for him to claim the throne of the two kingdoms, Scots and Picts, and become King of Alba. He ruled from 841 - 859, took the Christian name Kenneth, and moved the capital from Dunndald to Scone. Considered to be astute by some, and ruthless by others, he successfully united the rule of the two kingdoms permanently. He was succeeded by his brother, Donald. - LifeSketch: Malcolm (Máel Coluim mac Cináeda) was the son of Kenneth II, King of Alba . He was born about 954, the name of his mother is not known, she was a Princess of Leinster. About 983 (or before) Malcolm married an Irishwoman from Ossory, whose name was not recorded. They are believed to have had 3 daughters: - Bethoc b 894 married Crínán of Dunkeld , Abbot of Dunkeld; became mother of Duncan I - Donalda married Finlay MacRory, King of Moray; became mother of MacBeth - Olith, youngest daughter, married Sigurd, Earl of Orkney Malcolm succeeded his cousin Malcolm as King of Strathclyde in 990/991. Kenneth III was killed in battle against Malcolm on March 25, 1005 and Malcolm ascending the throne becoming Malcolm II, King of Alba / King of Scots. Malcolm raided into Northumbria circa 1016 and was defeated by Uhtred the Bold at Durham, however, the same year he defeated a force of English and Vikings at Carham, to became King of Lothian. With the acquisition of the Kingdom of Lothian, Malcolm became the first effective ruler of the whole of Scotland. Scottish rule was extended into Lothian and Northumbrian lands down to Berwick. King Cnut King of England secured the southern part of Northumbria for England in 1032, settling the border between Scotland and northern England. Having no sons, it is believed that Malcolm tried to insure that his grandson Duncan I, son of Bethoc, would inherit the throne by eliminating other possible successors. This includes having the grandson of Kenneth III murdered. Malcolm II died on 25 November, 1034 at Glamis Castle, Angus, mortally wounded by his kinsmen in battle. He was buried on the Isle of Iona. Malcolm II was the last sovereign of the House of MacAlpine. He was succeeded by his grandson Duncan as he had intended. Duncan II was in turn killed and succeeded by MacBeth, believed to also be the grandson of Malcolm II through his middle daughter Donalda. ---------------------------------------- http://www.robertson.org/OOTC_Battle_of_Duncrub.html BATTLE OF DUNCRUB - 965 by James E. Fargo, FSA Scot Everyone is familiar with William Shakespeare’s play "Macbeth" in which the two protagonists fight for the Scottish throne. Not so clearly known is that this rivalry began several generations before the events described in the play. Our King Duncan was not the kindly old man portrayed but lived up to what became his clan’s war cry "Fierce When Roused". Macbeth, from the royal house of Moray, had a better claim to the throne on King Malcolm II death, based on celtic tanistry whereas Malcolm had adopted the English feudal system of primogeniture for his own royal line. In 962 the kingship of Alba (Scotland) was contested between two rival branches of the MacAlpin dynasty after the death of King Malcolm I. The two princes ruled jointly until a falling out between them led to a battle upon a ridge called Duncrub (Dorsum Crup) about seven miles west of Perth in Atholl in 965. King Dub (or Duff) of Cumbria, a prince of the royal house of Alpin, was the son of King Malcolm I. Duff led an army against Prince Cuilen and his army of Moray men. It was the custom then to appoint the heir to the Scots throne, to the sub-kingship of Cumbria as the province had been given by King Edgar of England in return for homage for that province and to defend it from invading Danes. Although Duff’s army was victorious at Duncrub, Duncan, hereditary lay abbot of Duncalden (Dunkeld) and Dubdon the mormaer of Atholl were killed. At this time in Scotland’s history it was common for senior churchmen to lead the armed forces of their church estates into combat. This abbot Duncan (b.920-d.965) was the father of Duncan of Atholl (b.949-d.990) who became the mormaer of Atholl upon Dubdon’s death in this battle. This Duncan of Atholl became the father of Crinan (born c.976 and killed in 1045) and two younger sons. The second son, Grim (thane of Strathearn and baille of Dull) was killed in 1010 at the battle of Mortlach. The youngest son became an ancestor of the Irvine clan according to Burke’s Peerage. On King Duff’s death in 967, Prince Cuilen of Moray assumed the kingship until he was killed in 971 during a battle in Lothian with the son of King Dyfnwal of Strathclyde, an ally of Duff’s brother Kenneth. This brother, as King Kenneth II assumed the throne and reigned from 971-995. Kenneth finally killed Cuilen’s brother Olaf in 977 ending the royal house of Moray’s competition for the throne for that generation. Kenneth II was succeeded by his nephew (son of King Dub/Duff) as Kenneth III (King of Scots from 997-1005). On the death of Kenneth III, King Malcolm II (son of Kenneth II) ruled as King of Scots from 1005 to his death in 1034. Malcolm II made his grandson Duncan the King of Cumbria until he became King of the Scots upon Malcolm’s death Pinkerton, John "An Enquiry Into the History of Scotland Preceding the Reign of Malcom III, or the Year 1056" Vol. I, 1789, pp 78-99. - LifeSketch: Ecgfrida, was the daughter of Aldun (Ealdhun), Bishop of Durham, born about 973 in Durham, England. In 995 her father moved his see from Chester-le-Street to the present day location of Durham Cathedral and Uchtred of Bamburgh assisted him in preparing the new site for the church. It is at this time that Ecgfida met and married Uchtred. They had one son Ealdred born about 997. In 1006 Uchtred repudiated Ecgfrida (divorced) and she returned to her father. Ecgfrida, married again to Kilvert Fitz Ligwulf and had a daughter named Sigrid. Ecgfrida was again repudiated, returned to her father and became a nun. Ecgfrida died in 1089, and was buried at Durham. Ecgfrida's son Ealdred succeeded his uncle Eadwulf Cudel as Earl of Bernicia in 1020/25 and died in 1038 in the bloodfeud started by the murder of his father Uchtred by Thurbrand. Ecgfrida's daughter Sigrid, married three times, one husband being Eadwulf, the son of her mother's 1st husband Uchtred and his 2nd wife, her half-brother Ealdred's half-brother.
