- Mother: Gwawl verch Coel Hen de Grande BRETAGNE
- Birth: ABT 424, Manau Gododdin, Firth of Forth, Stirling, Scotland
- LifeSketch: Early British Kingdoms Dogfael, King of Dogfeiling (Born c.AD 429) (Latin: Docomaglus; English: Dogbald) Dogfael was the eighth son of Cunedda Wledig (the Imperator). When the Irish became dominant in North Wales, he travelled, with his family, from their home in Manau Gododdin (on the Forth) to expel them. Dogfael was then given the area around Rhuthin as a reward and here he set up the kingdom named after him. He probably ruled as a sub-king under his brother, King Einion Yrth (the Impetuous) of Gwynedd. It is unclear for how long his descendants continued to use the title of "King", but they appear to have enjoyed a certain amount of power in the area, if not a great deal, probably into the early eighth century. He was succeeded by his son Elno and, later, his grandson, Glas. ********************** History Files.co.uk Dogfeilion Dogfeilion (Dogfeiling to the later English) was a minor sub-kingdom based around Ruthin that formed the eastern border of Gwynedd. In the short term, it did much better for itself than most of the sub-kingdoms, expanding far into Britain's mainland, first in Dumnonia, and then into the Midlands, in Pengwern. Upon the death of Cunedda, his youngest (eighth) son, Dogfael, gained his inheritance and the land (in light blue on the north-eastern edge of the map, above) was named in his honour. Dogfael's own son, Elnaw, gained the Dumnonian sub-kingdom of Glastenning. During the following generation, under Cyndrwyn, the eastern Pengwernian city of Caer Luit Coyt was secured for one son (whose own son ruled all of Pengwern), while the other continued to rule in Glastenning. Around circa 642 Eludd ap Glas (who is probably the same person as Eiludd Powys), King of Dogfeilion, also became king of Powys when Selyf Sarffgadau died at the battle of Caer Legion, leaving an infant son on the throne. Unfortunately, that branch of the family died out and Powys reverted to Selyf's son for its king, while Pengwern fell to Oswiu of Northumbria in 656. Glastenning also fell, its security greatly compromised by the West Saxon breakthrough in 577, so that perhaps by no more than twenty years afterwards it no longer existed. By 700 the main Dogfeilion branch, now reduced to its original holdings inside Gwynedd, ended with Meurig ap Eliad, so Dogfeilion was very likely merged back into Gwynedd. The (non-coloured) lands to the east of Dogfeilion (in the region of Wroxeter, now roughly the eastern half of the modern county of Clwyd) seems also to have been part of the territory of Gwynedd as a whole at this time, lending credence to Cunedda's "North Wales" title. During the period in which the House of Dogfeilion ruled Pengwern, its kings were able to pass from Pengwern to Dogfeilion without crossing any borders. Powys must have gained the territory somewhere around 650 - 700, as the Dogfeilion rulers were weakening, and Gwynedd generally was subdued after the loss of Cadwaladr in 664.

Virtually nothing is known of this realm aside from the name of its founder, Edeyrn ap Cunedda. By the twelfth century, the process of merging and dividing Wales between divisions of Gwynedd's later rulers meant that Edeyrnion had passed to North Powys. It later formed the eastern section of the pre-1974 county of Meirionydd. Edward Dawson adds that the name of Edeyrn is the Roman Aeturnus, which probably confirms that there were Roman influences at work in the kingdom, and is normally seen spelled Edern by the Britons/Welsh.

One of the sons of Cunedda, he travelled with his father to north Wales in the early 450s to expel Irish raiders from the region. After his father's death, Einion inherited control over the newly founded kingdom of Gwynedd. Aided by his brother Ceredig, ruler of Ceredigion, and his nephew Meirion, ruler of Meirionnydd, Einion built upon his father's successes and further established his family's rule in the region. He was succeeded by two sons: Cadwallon Lawhir and Owain Ddantgwyn. See also Kings of Wales family trees Preceded by Cunedda Wledig Kings of Gwynedd Succeeded by Cadwallon Lawhir *********************** Early British Kingdoms Einion Yrth, King of Gwynedd (Born c.AD 419) (Latin: Engenius; English: Enoch) Einion Yrth (the Impetuous) originated in Manau Gododdin on the Firth of Forth. He travelled to North Wales with his father, Cunedda Wledig, in the early 5th century to expel the invading Irish. Despite, apparently, being the seventh son, he must have been of strong character for he became heir to his father's central power-base of Gwynedd. The kingdom was named after the Irish people known, in Latin, as the Venodotæ. From here, Einion was eventually able to impose himself as over-king to most of his brothers.

- Birth: ABT 424, Manau Gododdin, Firth of Forth, Stirling, Scotland
- LifeSketch: BIO: from British Kings and Queens (Mike Ashley) p 131 Ceredig, Ceredigion, fl 470s Ceredig is the eponymous founder of Ceredigion, and supposed son of Cunedda. His existence, though, is subject to doubt, and his name may have been assumned by working back form the name of the territory. If he existed, he must have been a younger son of Cunedda, as Einion inhertited the heartland of Venedotia (Gwynedd), while Ceredig inherited the coastal territory of west Wales. He probably ruled it as a sub-kingdomof Gwynedd, assuming it existed at all at tahat taime. There is some archeological evidence to suggest that the southern part of Ceredigion was culturally part of Dyfed and thus had closer Irish connections. Ceredig is recorded as marrying Eleri, the daughter of Brychan, which if true, would place him closer to the early sixth century. Two of Ceredig's daughters married the native rulers of Gwent and Glywysing suggesting that Ceredig was keen to develop alliances in south Wales. It is just possible that this Ceredig bears some relation to Ceretic, the ruler of Alclud, for although the latter is clearly identified with Dumbartom, both would have had opportunities to undertake slave trading in Ireland. ************* Wikipedia Ceredig ap Cunedda, (424 - 453 AD), king of Ceredigion,[1] may have been born c. 420 AD in the Brythonic kingdom of Manaw Gododdin (modern Lothian in Scotland), centred on the Firth of Forth in the area known as Yr Hen Ogledd. Little is known of him. One of the sons of Cunedda, grandfather of Saint David,[2] according to tradition, he arrived in what is now modern Wales from Gododdin with his father's family when they were invited to help ward off Irish invaders. As a reward for his bravery, his father gave him the southernmost part of the territories in north-west Wales reconquered from the Irish. The realm came to be called Ceredigion after him. ************************* Early British Kingdoms Ceredig Ceredigion, King of Ceredigion (Born c.AD 420) Ceredig was born in his father Cunedda Wledig's original homeland of Manau Gododdin around the Upper Firth of Forth. When called upon to expel Irish invaders from North Wales in the early 5th century, he travelled south, with the rest of his family. He fought bravely against the advancing Gaels and his father rewarded him with the most southern area of his new kingdom, bordering on Dyfed, possibly including part of the Cantref Gwaelod. Here, he became a great patron of his brother-in-law, St. Curig. The region became so associated with Ceredig that the people named it Ceredigion after him. In his old age, the kingdom was attacked once more by the Irish and he was persuaded by his counsellors to abdicate in favour of a younger man. However, his heir, his eldest grandson, Carannog, declined the offer of the Crown in order to become a hermit. Instead the people of Ceredigion had to look to Ceredig's second son, Usai. ********************** History Files.co.uk Ceredigion Although not really one of the sub-kingdoms of Gwynedd, Ceredigion, situated along much of the western coast of Cymru, was founded by Ceretic ap Cunedda. It bordered Dyfed and Powys, the former a Gaelic Deisi kingdom growing in strength, the latter the long border kingdom slowly being squeezed by the English. The creation of this kingdom, sealing the gap between Dyfed and Gwynedd, effectively secured the purpose of the Votadini migration and prevented any further Irish raids on Wales. The name lives on today as the English Cardigan, although its original name is still used in Cymru.

- Father: Edern ap Padarn DE GWYNEDD
- Mother: Cunedda EDEYRN
- Birth: ABT 380, Manau Gododoin, Firth of Forth, Stirling, Scotland
- Also known as: Cunedda
- Also known as: Good Hound Warrior
- Also known as: Padarn of the Scarlet Robe Commander of the Votadini
- Occupation: In Wales, he governed most of the north (as his epithet, King of North Wales, describes), although the lands under his direct rule correspond pretty accurately to the later kingdom of Gwynedd. His father and grandfather bore Roman names so it is very likely that they were Roman confederate allies., ABT 450, Gwynedd, Cymru
- Title Of Nobility: King of Cardiganshire
- LifeSketch: Cunedda ap Edern or Cunedda Wledig (fl. 5th century) was an important early Welsh leader, and the progenitor of the royal dynasty of Gwynedd. Background and life The name Cunedda (spelled Cunedag in the AD 828 pseudo-history Historia Brittonum) derives from the Brythonic word Cuno-dagos, meaning "Good Hound/Warrior" or "Having Good Hounds/Warriors". His genealogy is traced back to a grandfather named Padarn Beisrudd, which literally translates as Paternus of the "red tunic". One traditional interpretation identifies Padarn as a Roman (or Romano-British) official of reasonably high rank who had been placed in command of Votadini troops stationed in the Clackmannanshire region of Scotland in the 380s or earlier by the Emperor Magnus Maximus. Alternatively, he may have been a frontier chieftain who was granted Roman military rank, a practice attested elsewhere along the empire's borders at the time. In all likelihood, Padarn's command in Scotland was assumed after his death by his son, Edern (Latin: Æturnus), and then passed to Edern's son, Cunedda. According to Old Welsh tradition contained in section 62 the Historia Brittonum, Cunedda came from Manaw Gododdin, the modern Clackmannanshire region of Scotland: Maelgwn, the great king, was reigning among the Britons in the region of Gwynedd, for his ancestor, Cunedag, with his sons, whose number was eight, had come previously from the northern part, that is from the region which is called Manaw Gododdin, one hundred and forty-six years before Maelgwn reigned. And with great slaughter they drove out from those regions the Scotti who never returned again to inhabit them. Cunedda and his forebears led the Votadini against Pictish and Irish incursions south of Hadrian's Wall. Sometime after this, the Votadini troops under Cunedda relocated to North Wales to defend the region from Irish invasion, specifically the Uí Liatháin, as mentioned in the Historia Brittonum. Cunedda established himself in Wales, in the territory of the Venedoti, which would become the centre of the kingdom of Gwynedd. Two explanations for these actions have been suggested: either Cunedda was acting under the orders of Maximus (or Maximus's successors) or Vortigern, the high king of the British in the immediate post-Roman era. The range of dates (suggested by Peter Bartrum) runs from the late 370s, which would favour Maximus, to the late 440s, which would favour Vortigern. The suggestion that Cunedda was operating under instructions from Rome has been challenged by several historians. David Dumville dismisses the whole concept of transplanting foederati from Scotland to Wales in this manner, given that the political state of sub-Roman Britain would probably have made it impossible to exercise such centralised control by the 5th century. As Maximus himself was dead by the end of 388, and Constantine III departed from Britain with the last of Rome's military forces in 407, less than a generation later, it is doubtful that Rome had much direct influence over the military actions of the Votadini, either through Maximus or any other emissary, for any significant length of time. Maximus (or his successors) may have handed over control of the British frontiers to local chieftains at an earlier date; with the evacuation of the fort at Chester (which Mike Ashley, incidentally, argues is most likely where Cunedda established his initial base in the region, some years later) in the 370s, he may have had little option. Given that the archaeological record demonstrates Irish settlement on the Llyn Peninsula however and possible raids as far west as Wroxeter by the late 4th century, it is difficult to conceive of either Roman or allied British forces having presented an effective defence in Wales. Academics such as Sheppard Frere have argued that it may have been Vortigern who, adopting elements of Roman statecraft, moved the Votadini south, just as he invited Saxon settlers to protect other parts of the island. According to this version of events, Vortigern would have instructed Cunedda and his Votadini subjects to move to Wales in response to the aforementioned Irish incursions no later than the year 442, when Vortigern's former Saxon allies rebelled against his rule. Cunedda's supposed great grandson Maelgwn Gwynedd was a contemporary of Gildas, and according to the Annales Cambriae died in 547. The reliability of early Welsh genealogies is not uncontested however, and many of the claims regarding the number and identity of Cunedda's heirs did not surface until as late as the 10th century. Nonetheless, if we accept this information as valid, calculating back from this date suggests the mid-5th-century interpretation. Of Cunedda personally even less is known. Probably celebrated for his strength, courage, and ability to rally the beleaguered Romano-British forces of the region, he eventually secured a politically advantageous marriage to Gwawl, daughter of Coel Hen, the Romano-British ruler of Eboracum (modern York), and is claimed to have had nine sons. The early kingdoms of Ceredigion and Meirionnydd were supposedly named after his two sons Ceredig and Meirion. Allt Cunedda The hill of Allt Cunedda close to Cydweli in Carmarthenshire is probably associated with this Cunedda and suggests his campaigns against the Irish extended from Gwynedd into south west Wales. Amateur excavations of this site in the 19th century revealed an Iron Age hill fort and several collapsed stone cists containing the buried but well preserved skeletons of several men with formidable physical proportions. At least one of these was found in the seated position and another buried beneath a massive stone "shield" who had apparently been killed by a head wound. The bones appear to have been sent to various museums and have all since been woefully lost. One of the tumuli was known locally as Banc Benisel and was reputedly the grave of a Sawyl Penuchel, a legendary King of the Britons presumably from late Iron Age Britain. His epithet Penuchel or Ben Uchel means "high head" perhaps on account of his height. According to the Welsh Life of Saint Cadoc, a king named Sawyl Penuchel held court at Allt Cunedda. Confusingly, Geoffrey of Monmouth, in his Historia Regum Britanniae (1136), uses the name Samuil Penessil for a legendary pre-Roman king of Britain, preceded by Redechius and succeeded by Pir. Whether this is the same king and Cadoc's tale is just revisiting an old folk memory, this a different man of the same name, or simply an error by the composer of the Life, is unclear. Much of the archaeological evidence was inadvertently destroyed by J. Fenton's expedition in 1851 and it is not known if all the great men buried at this site were contemporaries or if there were successive burials on a site with long term cultural significance. The name connection with Cunedda makes it tempting to speculate that the great Cunedda himself may have been buried at this site; a site whose Iron Age notoriety may well have maintained a cultural importance well after the end of the Roman period and into the Dark Ages. The folk memories of people living near Allt Cunedda that were recorded by the Victorian antiquarians suggests an enduring respect for this site of deep historic importance. - LifeSketch: Cadwallon ap Einion (c. 460-534[citation needed]; reigned from c. 500[citation needed]), usually known as Cadwallon Lawhir ('Long Hand') and also called Cadwallon I by some historians, was a king of Gwynedd. According to tradition, Cadwallon ruled during, or shortly after, the Battle of Mons Badonicus, and King Arthur's victory over the Saxons (in either the early 490s or the mid 510s). Cadwallon's name is not connected with the legendary battle, but he may have benefitted from the period of relative peace and prosperity throughout Britain that it procured. The most momentous military achievement of Cadwallon's reign was the final expulsion of Irish settlers on Anglesey, and the re-absorption of that island, which later became the cultural and political base of the kingdom, into Gwynedd. Cadwallon's epithet, Lawhir, may possibly refer to him having longer than usual arms or might also be a metaphor, referring to the extent of his authority. The late medieval poet Iolo Goch claims that he could "reach a stone from the ground to kill a raven, without bending his back, because his arm was as long as his side to the ground." According to Gildas, Cadwallon's son, Maelgwn Gwynedd, murdered his uncle to ascend to the throne, which suggests that someone other than Maelgwn himself inherited the kingdom upon Cadwallon's death. No clear evidence exists as to who this "lost king" might be (assuming, of course, that Gildas's account is reliable), but some have suggested the name of Owain Ddantgwyn as the unfortunate heir/victim.

- LifeSketch: History Files.co.uk Rhos Mistakenly, sometimes, attributed to the kingdom of Ceredigion in its earliest days, Rhos was created as a sub-kingdom of Gwynedd in the late fifth century by Einion Yrth, it later merged back into Gwynedd. Its first king was Owain Ddantgwyn (White-Tooth), the youngest son of Einion Yrth, who ruled from circa 480. Owain is sometimes acquainted with High King Arthur Pendragon, as their reignal dates are similar. The argument is supplemented by Owain's father's name, as "Yrth" could be the root of "Uther". Owain's son, Cynlas Goch (the Red), or Cuneglassus in a more Romanised form, was mentioned as one of Gildas' five tyrants, and ruled from his capital at Din Arth. Under the rule of St Einon, Rhos absorbed Afflogion to become the Kingdom of Lleyn, although this was strictly on the say-so of the tough over-king, Maelgwyn Gwynedd. Rhos was apparently drawn back under the direct control of Gwynedd after Einion's death, probably during the reign of Rhun Hir. Einion's family appear to have remained important lords in eastern Gwynedd after they had ceased to be kings, and a ninth generation descendant of Cynlas became King Caradog ap Meirchion of Gwynedd.

- LifeSketch: Gwriad ap Elidyr From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Gwriad ap Elidyr (English: Gwriad son of Elidyr) or Gwriad Manaw was a late-8th century figure in Great Britain. Very little is known of him, and he chiefly appears in the historical record in connection to his son Merfyn Frych, King of Gwynedd from around 825 to 844 and founder of the Merfynion dynasty. Background Almost nothing is known about Gwriad's background. He married Esyllt ferch Cynan, daughter of Cynan Dindaethwy, King of Gwynedd. Their son Merfyn Frych later became the first king of Gwynedd known not to have come from the dynasty of its founder Cunedda. Merfyn evidently claimed the throne through his mother rather than through Gwriad, and bolstered this atypical matrilineal claim through his own power and reputation.[1] [2] According to the genealogies from Jesus College MS 20, Gwriad was the son of a certain Elidyr and was a descendant of Llywarch Hen and Coel Hen, rulers from the Hen Ogledd or "Old North", the Brittonic-speaking parts of what is now southern Scotland and northern England.[2][3 ] The bardic poetry indicates that Merfyn was "from the land of Manaw", a Brittonic place name applied to several districts, including Manaw Gododdin, the area around the Firth of Forth. This locale in the Hen Ogledd would be consistent with Gwriad's descent from Llywarch's northern lineage.[4] An origin in Manaw Gododdin was supported by scholars such as William Forbes Skene and John Edward Lloyd.[5] Other scholars connect Gwriad to the Isle of Man, known in Welsh as Ynis Manaw rather than Manaw Gododdin, especially following the 1896 discovery of an 8th- or 9th-century cross on man inscribed Crux Guriat ("Cross of Gwriad").[5][ 6] Lloyd wrote that this discovery "undoubtedly strengthens the case" for a Manx origin.[5] John Rhys suggested that Gwriad may have taken refuge on the Isle of Man during the bloody dynastic struggle in Gwynedd between Cynan Dindaethwy and Hywel prior to Merfyn's accession to the throne.[7] Still other locations for "Manaw" have been suggested, including Ireland, Galloway and Powys.[1] Rhys further noted that the Welsh Triads mention a "Gwryat son of Gwryan in the North", counted among the "Three Kings who were the Sons of Strangers", which he suggests is a reference to the father of Merfyn.[7][8] However, this conflicts with the Jesus College MS 20 pedigree, in which Gwriad's father is Elidyr. James E. Fraser suggests that the Gwriad of the Triad is instead to be identified with the King Guret of Alt Clut recorded by the Annals of Ulster as dying in 658.[9] **************************** Our royal, titled, noble and commoner ancestors Gwiard, King of Manaw1 Last Edited 4 Apr 2020 M, #9963 Father Elydyr, Prince of Deheubarth Gwiard, King of Manaw married Eisyllt, Queen of Wales, daughter of Cynan, King of Gwynedd and Matilda of Flint. - LifeSketch: BIO: from British Kings and Queens (Mike Ashley) p 155 Broachfael ap Elisedd Powys, fl 760s The son of Elisedd, little is known of his reign, except hat it would have paralled that of Mercia's greatest king, Offa. Whatever lands Elisedd had gained in the first half of the century, Brochfael probably lost in the second half. Offa undertook many raids into Wales during his reign, some as far west as Dyfed, and Powys was little more than a doorstep to his mighty army. Although the dates of Brochfael's reign are not known, it is possible he reigned for a considerable period. It was during his reign that Offa's Dyke was constructed, a remarkable feat of engineering which must have taken many men many years. It is a sign of Offa's power that it could be achieved at all, and it is probable that it was the men of Powys and of Glywysing who were pressed into service to complete the work. It served as much as a line of demarkation as a defence, and as such shows that Offfa effectively agreed a border between the Welsh and the Eglish would help sustain peace. Brochfael would therefore have benefitted from the Dyke in the short term, though in the long term it spelled the end for Powys. Brochfael was succeeded by his son Cadell. - LifeSketch: Geraint (/ˈɡɛraɪnt/) is a character from Welsh folklore and Arthurian legend. He was a king of Dumnonia and a valiant warrior. He may have lived during or shortly prior to the reign of the historical Arthur, although some scholars doubt he existed[citation needed]. The name Geraint is a Welsh form of the Latin Gerontius, meaning "old man". Historical figure Geraint's father was said to be a shepherd named Erbin.[1] According to Culhwch and Olwen, Geraint had brothers Ermind and Dywel. A "Geraint of the South" appears at the Battle of Catraeth (circa 600) in the 14th-century poem Y Gododdin, attributed to Aneirin. Geraint was one of the "Three Seafarers of the Isle of Britain" according to the Welsh Triads. The Elegy for Geraint is a sixth-century poem in the Black Book of Carmarthen written in praise of Geraint, a Dumnonian king who fell during a conflict with the Saxons. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle says: "Port and his two sons, Bieda and Maegla, came to Britain at the place called Portsmouth, and slew a young Welshman, a very noble man."[2] Scholars believe that the Llongborth mentioned in the poem is the Portsmouth of the Chronicle entry and that Geraint is the "young Welshman" who was killed there.[2] However, other locations have been suggested. Hypotheses about the location of the battle range from Somerset, bordering Dumnonia, to as far north as Kingdom of Strathclyde. The early poem Y Gododdin mentions a "Geraint before the South", conceivably a reference to Geraint mab Erbin.[3] Geraint's deeds at the Battle of Llongborth are celebrated in the poem "Geraint son of Erbin", which was written probably in the 10th or 11th century [3] and traditionally attributed to Llywarch Hen. However, Derek Bryce, following other scholars, suggests that the later, historical Geraint of Dumnonia (d. 710) may be identified as the real warrior eulogised in connection with the Battle of Llongborth in the poem, despite its title. Bryce identifies Llongborth with the 710 battle between that Geraint and Saxon leader Ine of Wessex. Strathclyde had rulers named Geraint and Erbin/Elfin in the same era, and was also known as Damnonia, after the Dumnonii tribe of the area in Romano-British times, and thus easily confused with Dumnonia/Devon. Arthurian legend Geraint, with his wife Enid, from The Idylls of the King Geraint is possibly most famous as the protagonist in the Welsh tale Geraint and Enid, where he becomes the lover of Enid. Geraint and Enid is one of the three Welsh Romances associated with the Mabinogion. Its story closely parallels the French writer Chrétien de Troyes's Erec and Enide.[1] Some scholars feel both works derived from a common lost source, but most believe the Welsh version derives directly or indirectly from Chrétien. In this case, the renowned figure of Geraint would have been added to the story to suit Welsh audiences unfamiliar with Chrétien's protagonist, Erec. Geraint and Enid was reworked by Alfred Tennyson into the poems The Marriage of Geraint and Geraint and Enid, part of his Idylls of the King.[4] The Arthurian character in later works is often referred to as Sir Geraint. Saint Geraint According to the vita of Saint Teilo, in 549, in order to avoid the yellow plague then sweeping through Britain, Teilo, with a small group of monks, left Llandaff to join Samson of Dol in Brittany. Passing through Dumnonia, they were received hospitably by King Geraint at Din Gerrein. In gratitude, Teilo promised the King his spiritual assistance at the hour of death. Seven years later, Teilo returned to give the King the last rites. Perhaps because of the relationships that bound him to Teilo, he too was proclaimed holy.[5] Near Falmouth, local legends of the folk saint King Geraint, patron saint of Gerrans, claim he was buried on Carne Beacon near Veryan.[citation needed] Gerrans celebrates his festival on the second Sunday in August. His feast day is 10 August.[5]
