- Father: William DE SAYE I

- Alt. Birth: ABT 1135
- Life Sketch: «b»Biography«/b» "He was involved in financial transactions and law suits against his cousins and nephew by marriage Geoffrey Fitz Piers to gain the lands of the Mandeville Earls of Essex; married 1st Alice, daughter of Hugh Maminot and widow of Ralph de Cahaines; married 2nd Alice or Adeliza (born after 1163; died in or after 1214), daughter of 1st Earl of Oxford by his 3rd wife Agnes, and died between 1212 and 1214, having by his 1st wife had [Geoffrey], with and eldest son." "GEOFFREY DE SAY I, brother and heir male, being 2nd son of William DE SAY I and Beatrice, was born probably not later than 1135, and possibly earlier. He appears as witness to a charter of Earl William de Mandeville, brother of Earl Geoffrey, before 1166, and a charter of Henry II, executed at Winchester (1176-81), granting to Earl William de Mandeville all the land in Normandy, which Robert de Say had rightfully given him. In 1184/5 he accounted in respect of disseisins in Kent; and acted as intermediary for Ralph Brito in connection with his account for the issues of the lands of Henry de Essex and of the Honor of Boulogne. On the King's last return to England in 1188, he was one of the messengers sent forthwith to Canterbury, to demand the instant restoration of services at Christ Church, Canterbury. "In 1191 he offered 7000 marks, after an offer of 3000 marks by Geoffrey FitzPiers in the previous year, for the land of Earl William de Mandeville (died 1189). The heir was Geoffrey's mother, Beatrice, but being "feeble and full of days " she stood aside in the interest of her son. Geoffrey obtained a grant of the lands and in 1190 put an aid upon them; but he was unable to pay the promised sum, and the lands, and eventually the Earldom, came to Geoffrey FitzPiers as husband of Beatrice, elder daughter of William, Geoffrey de Say's elder brother. Geoffrey de Say, however, did not abandon his claim, and in 1212 appointed his son Geoffrey, to whom he transferred his rights, to act as his attorney in the pending suit against Geoffrey FitzPiers for the lands of Earl William. Geoffrey I and Geoffrey FitzPiers were dead by 1214, in which year the claim was heard, after Geoffrey II had offered 15,000 marks to have such seisin of Earl William's lands as his father had on the day on which King Richard disseised him. Geoffrey de Mandeville defended the proceedings in place of his father. The claim failed, but continued to smoulder until 1283-84, when the matter was settled by fine. "In 1193, at the King's command, he accompanied the Chancellor to Germany, where he appears as a witness to several charters given by the King, with whom he was also in April and May 1194 at Winchester, Bishop's Waltham and Portsmouth. He was with the King in the army of Normandy in 1194, and witnessed charters of the King at Rouen in 1196 or 1197. He was at Lambeth in 1201 and at Lisieux in October 1202. In July 1203 he obtained quittance of debts to the Jews of London, with a further quittance so long as he was in the King's service with arms and horses. In 1204 he had an allowance of one mark for certain expenses in connection with Dover Castle, and on 8 August a mandate issued that he should have 100 marks of silver for the work of the Castle. On 23 January 1205 the King ordered the Constable of Taunton to send a master miner with 40 men to Dover to Geoffrey de Say. In 1191 he paid part of the scutage charged against the heirs of Walkelin Maminot, and in 1194 he was brought in as debtor for the scutage of the heirs "quorum heres est." From 1194. onwards he was regularly amerced for scutage on the Maminot lands. "He married, 1stly, Alice, widow of Ralph DE CAHAINES, and daughter of Hugh MAMINOT. He married, 2ndly, Alice, daughter of Aubrey (DE VERE) 1st EARL OF OXFORD, almost certainly by his 3rd wife Agnes, daughter of Henry DE ESSEX. He was alive in 1212, but dead in 1214. Alice survived him and was living in 1214 and died possibly as late as 1217." «b»Property«/b» «b»Manor of Saye's Court«/b» "Gilbert de Magminot (or Maminot, as this name was afterwards more frequently spelt) fixed the scite of his barony here, which therefore was afterwards esteemed caput baroniæ, or head of the barony, and he erected a castle on it, as was usual in those days, every part of which has been long since buried in its own ruins; though some remains of stony foundations seem to point out the situation of it, near Saye's-court, in Bromfield, on the bank of the Thames, near the mast dock. His grandson, Wakelin, died without issue, in the third year of king Richard I. having been a good benefactor to the monks of Bermondsey, to whom, in the year 1157, he gave ten shillings rent, out of the mill of Deptford. On his death his sister Alice became his coheir, and brought this place, with much other inheritance, to her husband Geoffrey, second son of William de Saye, who granted this manor of West Greenwich (as it was then called) with the advowson of the church and its appurtenances to the Knights Templars, in pure and perpetual alms. His son Geoffrey regained the possession of it by giving the Knights Templars that of Sadlescombe, in Suffex, for it. He ratified to the canons of Begham the lands of Brocele, which were part of his barony, and the church of St. Nicholas, at Greenwich, which his father had given to them. Geoffrey de Saye, last mentioned, being in arms against king John, with others of the barons, in the 17th year of that reign, his lands and fees, lying in Kent and elsewhere, were given to Peter de Crohun, though after the death of the king he was taken into favour, and his lands were restored in the 8th year of king Henry III. «b»Birling Manor«/b» "Ralph de Curva Spina, or Crookthorne, as his name was Englished, resided at Comport, or Comford-park, in the north-east part of this parish, where this family continued till the reign of king Henry II. when they were succeeded in their possessions here by that of Magminot. Walkelin de Magminot died without issue in the third year of king Richard I. anno 1191, and Alice, his sister became his heir, who carried this manor in marriage to her husband Geoffry, second son of William de Say, who in her right became likewise possessed of large estates at Deptford, Cowdham, and elsewhere in this county. His descendant, William de Say, died possessed of the manor of Birling, in the 23d year of king Edward I. holding it in capite by barony, and in some old deeds Birling is stiled caput baroniæ de Say, that is the capital seat of his barony." "It was Geoffrey himself, not his son, who married between 1175 and 1180. Therefore it seems likely that he was born much later than 1135, and perhaps even after 1144, the traditional date of his father's death."

- LifeSketch: Sir William de Saye, III (II) MP Birth: 1133 Norfolk, Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire, England Death: circa August 01, 1177 Norfolk, Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire, England Son of Sir William de Saye, II and Lady Beatrice de Mandeville "WILLIAM DE SAY II, 1st son and heir, first appears as a party to the confirmation by his father of Hugh de Beauchamp's grant to St. Neot's, perhaps towards the end of 1144. Between 1150 and 1160 he entered into an agreement with the monks of Ramsey to grant them rents in Norfolk and elsewhere, his mother Beatrice assenting. He paid scutage in 1161-62 under Cambs and Hunts. In 1166 he returned his Carta under Hunts. He accounted in 1167-68 under Hunts for 34 s. in respect of the aid to marry the King's daughter, and, about 1175 was witness to a charter in favour of Buckland Priory. The name and parentage of his wife are unknown. He died s.p.m. shortly before 1 August 1177." [1] William was born about 1135. His wife is unknown. They had two daughters, Beatrice the elder and Matilda. William was dead by 1177. Geoffrey Fitz Piers, the husband of Beatrice was a great favorite of King Henry II, King Richard and King John. He served as justiciar of England 1198 to 1214. He was able to ensure that the estate of William de Say was given, for the most part, to his wife. Through her, he was able to claim the de Mandeville inheritance and the title Earl of Essex. [2] William and his mother, Beatrice, made donations to Ramsey Abbey. This was the Abbey previously attacked and ravaged by his father and his maternal uncle, Geoffrey de Mandeville, the 1st Earl of Essex. It is possible that they were atoning for the evil deeds of the past. William did NOT marry Aufrica daughter of William of Scotland. She did marry a William de Say, but this was William his nephew, son of his brother Geoffrey. This is clear when you consider that William and Aufrica had a son William who, if he was the son of this William, would have inherited his estates instead of the two daughters Beatrice and Matilda.[3] William d. v. p., leaving two daus., viz., Beatrix, who m. Geoffrey FitzPiers, and Maud, m. to William de Bocland. - Life Sketch: “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “SIMON DE SENLIS, Knt., advocate of the Priory of St. Andrew's, Northampton, Sheriff of Huntingdonshire, son and heir, born c.1103. He was a ward of his step-father, King David I, until 1124. He married before 1138 ISABEL (or ELIZABETH) OF LEICESTER, daughter of Robert of Meulan, Knt., 1st Earl of Leicester, by Amice, daughter of Raoul, seigneur of Gael in Brittany and Breteuil in Normandy [see LEICESTER 6 for her ancestry]. They had one son, Simon [Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton], and three daughters, Amice, Hawise, and Isabel. By an unknown mistress, he had an illegitimate son, Simon. He witnessed the Oxford charter of King Stephen in 1136. He was recognized as Earl of Northampton previous to 1140. About 1140, as "Earl Simon," he granted three bovates and two tofts in Barton on Humber, Lincolnshire to William his chamberlain. He fought for King Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln in 1141, and was one of the three earls who remained faithful to Queen Maud during her husband's captivity. About 1145 he exchanged various rents from the mills of Earl's Barton and Great Doddington, Northamptonshire with the Prior and convent of St. Andrew's, Northampton, in return for lands in Hardingstone, Northamptonshire. After the death of his half-brother, Henry of Scotland, in 1152, he obtained the earldom of Huntingdon. He appears five times in the charters of his brother-in- law, Robert, Earl of Leicester, including treaties with the Bishop of Lincoln and Earl of Chester. In 1152-3 he granted Merton, Oxfordshire to the Templers. He founded the nunnery of De la Pré, near Northampton, and Sawtry Abbey, Huntingdonshire. SIMON DE SENLIS, Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton, died August 1153. Sometime before 1158, his widow, Isabel, and her son, Simon, granted to the nuns of Eaton two carucates of land with pasture for 300 sheep in Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire. His widow, Isabel, married (2nd) GERVASE PAYNELL, of Dudley (in Sedgley), Staffordshire, Churchill, Worcestershire, son and heir of Ralph Paynell, of Dudley, Staffordshire. They had one son, Robert. In the period, c.1158-66, he and his wife, Isabel, presented to the church of Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire. In the period, 1158-66, he and his wife, Isabel, gave a mansura in Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire to Nuneaton Priory, Warwickshire. In 1173 he was among the supporters of Prince Henry in his rebellion. In 1182 he confirmed to the monks of Tickford the chapel of Astwood, Buckinghamshire. In 1187 Gervase confirmed to Tickford Priory, with the consent of his wife, Isabel, Countess of Northampton, the gifts of his father and grandfather. He issued two other charters to Tickford, one giving a house and messuage in Newport, and the other giving his land in Chicheley, Buckinghamshire. GERVASE PAYNELL was living as late as May 1188 (date of letter), and died before Michaelmas 1194, and was buried in Tickford Priory. At some unknown date, Isabel was granted a bovate of land in Groby, Leicestershire by her brother, Robert, Earl of Leicestershire, which sometime in or after 1190 she gave to Nuneaton Priory. At an unknown date, she also granted four bovates in Waltham [on the Wolds], Leicestershire to Belvoir Priory. Baker Hist. & Antiqs. of Northampton 1 (1822-30): 563 (Beaumont-Quincy ped.). - Father: Simon DE SENLIS
- Mother: Matilda OF HUNTINGTON
- Birth: 1096, Huntingdonshire, England
- Also known as: Matilda de St Liz
- LifeSketch: “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “MAUD DE SENLIS, married in 1112 ROBERT FITZ RICHARD, of Little Dunmow, Essex, Baynard's Castle, London, Cratfield, Suffolk, etc., Steward of Kings Henry I and Stephen, 5th son of Richard Fitz Gilbert, of Bienfaite and Orbec, Normandy, Clare, Suffolk, Tonbridge, Kent, by Rohese, daughter of Walter Giffard, of Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire [see CLARE 1 for his ancestry]. They had one son, 1. Walter, and one daughter, 2. Maud. He witnessed a number of charters of King Henry I. Sometime before 1136 he gave all his part of the water of Stour Mere, for the souls of himself and his ancestors, and for the love of his kinsman, Gerard Giffard the prior, to Stoke by Clare Priory, Suffolk. He accompanied King Stephen to York and Exeter in 1136. ROBERT FITZ RICHARD died in 1137, after 28 November, and was buried at St. Neot's Priory, Cambridgeshire. His widow, Maud, married (2rid) between 1137 and 1140 (as his 1st wife) SAHER DE QUINCY (or QUENCY), of Long Buckby, Northamptonshire and Wimpole, Cambridgeshire, and, in right of his 1st wife, of East Bradenham, Norfolk and Daventry, Northamptonshire; and, in right of his 2nd wife, of Great Childerley (in Childerley), Cambridgeshire. They had two sons, 1. Robert and 2. Saher, and one daughter, 3. Alice. Sometime before 1176 Maud granted the church of East Bradenham, Norfolk to Norwich Cathedral with the consent of her son, Walter Fitz Robert. At an unknown date, with consent of Walter her son, she granted to Maurice Fitz Geoffrey all her dower lands in Essex and London, which William Fitz Walcher formerly held. He witnessed a charter of Simon son of Simon Earl of Northampton in 1153-7. His wife, Maud, was living in 1158. In 1158 he was pardoned 25s. danegeld in Northamptonshire. Sometime after 1163 he granted Sibton Abbey 20 acres of land from his demesne and 30 acres of broken heath in the village of Tuddenham, Suffolk. At an unknown date, Saher granted the canons of Dunmow, Essex a yearly rent of 10s. issuing out of the lordship of East Bradenham, Norfolk. Saher married (2nd) after 1165 ASCELINE PEVEREL, widow of Geoffrey de Waterville (occurs c.1138-61, dead in 1162), of Ailsworth and Upton (in Castor), Northamptonshire, and daughter of Robert Peverel, by his wife, Adelicia. They had no issue. She was co-heiress in 1148 to her brother, William Peverel, of Dover, by which she inherited a one-quarter share of the barony of Bourn, Cambridgeshire. Sometime between 1161 and 1172, she and her son, Ralph de Waterville, conceded to Shrewsbury Abbey a third of Crugelton and Slepe, Shropshire, as given previously by her uncle, Hamon Peverel. Sometime in the 1170s Saher confirmed William [de Belvoir] and his son, Reynold [de Oakley], in their possession of the manor of Great Childerley (in Childerley), Cambridgeshire. SAHER DE QUINCY died in 1190 (or about 1193). Children of Maud de Senlis, by Robert Fitz Richard: i. WALTER FITZ ROBERT [see next]. ii. MAUD DE SENLIS, married (1st) WILLIAM D'AUBENEY, of Belvoir, Leicestershire [see DAUBENEY 5]. (2nd) RICHARD DE LUVETOT, of Sheffield, Yorkshire [see DAUBENEY 5]. Children of Maud de Senlis, by Saher de Quincy: i. ROBERT DE QUINCY, of Tranent, Fawside, and Longniddry, East Lothian, Scotland, Grantchester, Cambridgeshire, Long Buckby, Northamptonshire, etc., married ORABEL FITZ NESS [see QUINCY 5]. ii. ALICE DE SENLIS, married ROGER DE HUNTINGFIELD, of Linstead and Mendham, Suffolk, Frampton, Lincolnshire, East Bradenham, Norfolk, etc. [see HUNTINGFIELD 5].”

- LifeSketch: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_I_de_Senlis,_Earl_of_Huntingdon-Northampton Simon I de Senlis (or Senliz), 1st Earl of Northampton and 2nd Earl of Huntingdon "jure uxoris," was a Norman nobleman. In 1098, he was captured during the Vexin campaign of King William Rufus and subsequently was ransomed. He witnessed King Henry I’s Charter of Liberties that were issued at his coronation in 1100. He attested royal charters in England from 1100 to 1103, 1106 to 1007, and 1109 to 1011. Sometime in the period 1093 to 1100, he and his wife Maud founded the Priory of St Andrew's, Northampton. He witnessed a grant of King Henry I to Bath Abbey on August 8, 1111, at Bishop's Waltham, as the king was crossing to Normandy. He built Northampton Castle, the town walls and one of the four remaining round churches in England, The Holy Sepulchre, Northampton. He subsequently went abroad and died at La Charité-sur-Loire, where he was buried in the new priory church. The date of his death is uncertain. Simon was the third son of Laudri de Senlis, Sire of Chantilly and Ermenonville, in Picardy, and his spouse Ermengarde. In or before 1090, Simon married Maud of Huntingdon, daughter of Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria, Northampton and Huntingdon, and the better-connected Judith of Lens. Judith was the niece of William the Conqueror, who earlier had wanted Judith to marry Simon, but she had refused and fled abroad to avoid William's wrath. Simon and Maude had three children: Simon II de Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon-Northampton; Waltheof of Melrose; Saer de Quincy, Magna Carta Surety; and Maud de Senlis, who married first Robert Fitz Richard of the de Clare family of Little Dunmow, Essex, and had issue, then, after Robert's death, she married Saer de Quincy, Lord of Long Buckby in Northamptonshire, and had Robert de Quincy, who was father of Alice de Senlis (St. Liz), the mother of Sir William de Huntingfield, Magna Carta surety. Following Simon's death, his widow Maud married, at about Christmas 1113, David I, nicknamed "the Saint," who became King of Scots in 1124. David was recognized as Earl of Huntingdon to the exclusion of his step-son Simon, and the earldom of Northampton reverted to the crown. Maud, 2nd Countess of Huntingdon, the Queen of Scots, died in 1130/31. In popular culture Simon was featured in Alan Moore's book "Voice of the Fire" as the main character of the chapter "Limping to Jerusalem." -- Wikiwand: Simon I de Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon-Northampton

- LifeSketch: “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): "Children of Simon de Senlis, by Isabel of Leicester: i. SIMON DE SENLIS, Earl of Northampton, son and heir, born about 1138. He was a minor at his father's death and remained in ward to the king for about five years. He married ALICE DE GANT [see GANT 2.i.a], daughter and heiress of Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln, by Rohese, daughter of Richard Fitz Gilbert [de Clare] [see GANT 2.i for her ancestry]. They had one son, Simon, who died young. Sometime before 1163 he confirmed his father's grant in Merton, Oxfordshire to the Templars. He and his wife, Alice, issued two confirmation charters to Stixwould Priory c.1155-60. In 1174 he was recognized as Earl of Huntingdon. As Simon, Earl of Huntingdon, he granted to the monks of Wardon, Bedfordshire a certain road as they had it on the day he came to the Siege of Huntingdon. SIMON DE SENLIS, Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton, died in June 1184. He was buried in St. Andrew's Priory, Northampton, to which he was a benefactor. His widow, Alice, died in 1185. She gave the mills of Folkingham, Lincolnshire to Sempinghan Priory, Lincolnshire in order that she might be buried there, but it appears she was instead buried at Bridlington Priory, Yorkshire. - LifeSketch: Simon II de Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton, was an Anglo-Norman nobleman. He was the son of Simon I de Senlis, Earl of Huntingdon-Northampton and Maud, Countess of Huntingdon. He married Isabel, daughter of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester. He was prominent in The Anarchy, fighting for Stephen of England in 1141 at the Battle of Lincoln. He continued to support Stephen's side; R. H. C. Davis calls him "staunch" and "consistently loyal" and surmises that Simon calculated that if the Empress Matilda won, his earldom of Northampton would be taken over by David of Scotland. Simon was rewarded by becoming Earl of Huntingdon. - Father: Ludwig I DES FRÄNKISCHEN
- Mother: Unknown Spouse of Hludowic I DES FRÄNKISCHEN
- Birth: ABT 794, Burgund; Fränkisches Reich
- Also known as: arnould
- Also known as: Arnulf De Sens (Carolignian)
- Title Of Nobility: Count of Sens in Burgundy
- LifeSketch: Arnulf was not "allegedly" Count von Sens (so Brandenburg, who inadvertently speaks of Senlis in the note), but is clearly proven as such by the reliable Chronicon Moissiacense (to 817, MG SS 1,312). Brandenburg starts the year of birth with "erwa 790", given the year of birth of the young father (778), but probably a little too early. Nothing speaks against the fact that this Count Arnulf is identical with the Arnulf mentioned by Nithard I, 6 together with other greats (including Count Gerhard von Paris), who fell away from KARL THE KAHLEN to LOTHAR I. (841 III / IV, on the events Lot-Halphen 23-25). His leading position matches his origins and the age of over 45 at the time. This identification of Chaume 1, 164; 169-172; 185; Proposed in 521 and taken up in DBF 3, 1939, 972 does not mean that Arnulf always stayed Graf in Sens.
- Title Of Nobility: Comte de Sens.
- Death: APR 841, Fränkisches Reich

- Father: Guillaume DE GELLONE Duc d'Aquitaine
- Mother: Cunégonde
- Birth: ABT 795, Autun, Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France
- Also known as: Bernard de Septimanie
- Also known as: Bernat, Bernardo de Septimània
- Title Of Nobility: Comte de Barcelone
- LifeSketch: Bernard of Septimania (795–844), son of William of Gellone, was the Frankish Duke of Septimania and Count of Barcelona from 826 to 832 and again from 835 to his execution. He was also count of Carcassonne from 837. During his career, he was one of the closest counsellors of the Emperor Louis the Pious, a leading proponent of the war against the Moors, and opponent of the interests of the local Visigothic nobility. Bernard married Dhuoda, perhaps daughter of Sancho I of Gascony, on 29 June 824 in Aachen. By her he had two sons, William and Bernard Plantapilosa. __________________________________________________ Bernard is first attested in historical records as one of four sons in a document of his father's dating to 14 December 804 dealing with the foundation of the monastery of Gellone. Bernard must have inherited land in the area around Toulouse from which he expanded his power to become count around 826. He first attracted the attention of higher-ups by quelling the local revolt of a nobleman named Aisso, who was perhaps a Visigothic lieutenant of the deposed Bera, Count of Barcelona. The garrisons of the castles in the area, who had been favorable to Bera, joined Aisso in a revolt against the new count. Only the castle of Roda de Ter, in the county of Ausona, resisted and was subsequently destroyed by Aisso. From his newly occupied territory, Aisso attacked the county of Cerdanya and the region of the Vallès. The young count Bernard requested and received some help from the Emperor, as well as that of some local hispani (probably Gothic noblemen). To counter these reinforcements, Aisso sent his brother to request help from Abd ar-Rahman II, Emir of Córdoba, the only potential ally powerful enough to threaten the Franks. Abd ar-Rahman sent the general Ubayd Allah Abu Marwan to Zaragoza in May 827, from whence he invaded the territory of Barcelona, reaching the city itself in the summer. He besieged it and ransacked its environs, but failed to take it. When the Emperor learned of these raids, he ordered his second son, Pepin, then King of Aquitaine, and the counts Hugh of Tours and Matfrid of Orléans to recruit an army against the Muslims, but recruitment was slow. By the time the army arrived, Abu Marwan had already returned to Muslim territory, taking Aisso and his followers with him (late 827). This reprieve, seen as a victory, greatly increased Bernard's prestige. Though the ravaged county of Ausona, a dependency of Barcelona, remained depopulated into the mid-ninth century, its ruin was attributed to the late arrival of Hugh and Matfrid. Both counts were dispossessed of their counties at the Assembly of Aachen in 828. At that assembly, Orléans was granted to Odo and Bernard's brother Gaucelm received the fiefs of Conflent and Razes. As Leibulf of Provence had died in the spring, his vast dominions—Narbonne, Béziers, Agde, Melgueil, Nîmes, and probably Uzès—were assigned to Bernard. From this wide collection of honores in Septimania, Bernard took the title "Duke of Septimania". In another assembly, at Ingelheim in June, a reprisal raid into Cordoban territory was considered, but although an army was gathered in Thionville, it did not enter the lands controlled by Bernard as the risk of Muslim raiding seemed to have declined. Court career In August 829 the Emperor sent his son Lothair to Pavia to wear the Iron Crown. Louis summoned Bernard to replace his son at court, with granting him the title of camerarius or Chamberlain and the custody of the young Charles, then just Duke of Alsace, Alemannia, and Rhaetia, but later destined to be King of West Francia. Bernard delegated the government of his counties to his brother Gaucelm, who thereupon took the title marchio or margrave. After only a few months at court, Bernard had made many enemies. Indeed, he was the prime catalyst for the revolt of Lothair the following year. Thegan of Trier, in his Gesta Hludowici, recorded that he was accused of having an illicit relationship with Empress, Judith of Bavaria, but considered these rumours to be lies. Nevertheless, these rumours provoked a riot in the army gathered at Rennes to fight the Bretons in April 830. His life under threat, as the three elder children of Louis supported the opposition against him, Bernard abandoned the court and, returned to Barcelona. His brother, Eribert, who had remained at court, was banished. Bernard was deprived of the county of Autun which he had sometime before been granted. At an assembly in Nijmegen in October 830, the Emperor recovered his authority after a brief civil war with his sons. Subsequently, in another assembly, at Aachen in February 831, he proceeded to divide the Empire, giving Gothia to Charles, although the division would not be effective until his death. Bernard attempted to regain favour with Judith and Charles, but they avoided renewing relations with him after his fall from grace. At the Assembly of Thionville, in October 831, Bernard spoke personally with the Emperor, but could not regain his previous position at court. In response Bernard reversed his previous loyalties and side with the Emperor's enemies. Civil war of 831–832 In November 831 Pepin of Aquitaine revolted against his father. While Berengar the Wise, Count of Toulouse, advised him against such a course of action, Bernard encouraged it. In early 832 Louis the Pious began the campaign against his rebellious son. Berengar, loyal to the Emperor, invaded Bernard's honores and took Roussillon (with Vallespir) and probably also Razes and Conflent. By 2 February, Berengar was already in Elna. Ultimately, the successive victories of the imperial forces compelled Pepin and Bernard to appear before the Emperor in October 832. Pepin was dispossessed of his kingdom and sent as prisoner to Trier, having ceded all his territories to his half-brother Charles. Bernard was accused of infidelity and dismissed from all his offices and dispossessed of all his honores in Septimania and Gothia, which were given to Berengar. His brother Gaucelm was probably also dispossessed, but for a time he remained in possession of the County of Empúries, ignoring his dismissal. Civil war of 833–834 In 833 however, Lothair revolted. Pepin, with Bernard and Gaucelm, remained loyal to Louis this time. After defeating Lothair's forces, and returning the emperor to power on 1 March 834, Bernard requested the return of his honores, citing the loss of men he had sustained for the emperor's cause. However, Berengar was still in legal possession. The Emperor hesitated over his decision, but in June 835 he summoned Bernard and Berengar to an Assembly in Cremieux, near Lyon, where he would deliver a verdict. Berengar died unexpectedly on the way and, freed of obstacles, the Emperor gave Septimania and its counties and the Toulouse to Bernard. Reign of Charles the Bald Bernard avoided participating in the Battle of Fontenay-en-Puisaye (25 June 841), where Charles the Bald and Louis the German defeated their brother Lothair, who retreated to the south with his army. Bernard remained outside the battle awaiting its result, upon which he sent his son William to offer homage to Charles the Bald and to promise him that his father would obtain the submission of Pepin II, the rebellious son of Pepin, who was claiming to rule Aquitaine. It seems that Bernard had no intention of keeping this last promise. During Charles the Bald's campaign in Aquitaine (842), he decided to punish Bernard, dispossessing him of the county of Toulouse in favor of Acfred (July). Bernard, however, refused to accept the decision and revolted, openly allying himself to Pepin II and expelling Acfred from Toulouse (843). Charles responded by sending the dux Guerin of Provence, who in 842 directed the campaign in Aquitaine, against Septimania. Various other events—renewed Viking invasions and Breton raids—compelled an end to the internal civil struggles afflicting the Empire and, in August 843, the Treaty of Verdun was signed between the three brothers: Charles, Louis, and Lothair. Septimania and Gothia were left in the hands of Charles the Bald. The county of Uzès, where Bernard still possessed estates, was assigned to Lothair. Furthermore, the county of Autun, which had long been lost to Bernard, and to which his son had renewed a claim, was given to Guerin. In 844 Charles the Bald returned to Aquitaine with the objective of forcing Pepin II to submit and conquering Toulouse. During the Battle of Toulouse of 844, Bernard of Septimania was captured, either by the royal forces during the assault on Toulouse or, according to French historian Pierre Andoque, the year before by Guerin in Uzès. Andoque maintains that in 844 he was merely brought before Charles during his campaign through Aquitaine. One way or the other, in May 844 Bernard was presented to Charles, who ordered his execution. The following month, Pepin II and Bernard's son William dealt a severe blow to Charles in the Angoumois on 14 June. Bernard's honores were given to Sunifred, who had been tasked previously with subduing Aznar in Aragon.
