- Father: Lucius Vibius Sabinus Scribonius LIBO FRUGI RUPILIUS
- Mother: Salonia Matidia Augusta Major
- Birth: 13 AUG 83, Rome, Roman Empire
- Also known as: Vibia Matidia
- LifeSketch: Sabina was born in 88 ce, the daughter of L. Vibius Sabinus and Matidia I , the maternal granddaughter of G. Salonius Matidius Patruinus and Ulpia Marciana , and the grandniece of Ulpia's brother M. Ulpius Traianus (Trajan). When Sabina was ten years old, Trajan became emperor of Rome. Thus, she was in a powerful position when she came to be of marriageable age. Sabina had a younger sister, Matidia II , named after their mother as Sabina bore the feminine version of their father's name. Although Sabina's family was both Roman and aristocratic, it also had provincial ties, for long before her birth it had been among the first to settle in Italica, a Roman colony in Spain. Sabina's importance was connected with the successful career of her granduncle Trajan, whose brilliant military service caused Emperor Domitian to elevate him to the uppermost echelon of the Roman political elite before that unpopular emperor was assassinated in late 96. Although he was somewhat sullied by his close association with Diocletian, Trajan's competency and extensive connections led Domitian's childless successor, Nerva, to adopt him in 97. As a result, when Nerva died a few months later (98), the empire fell into Trajan's lap. Thus unexpectedly elevated to supreme authority, Trajan had a need to consolidate his rule, and a common way to do so in ancient Rome was to judiciously exploit political marriage. Trajan and his wife Plotina , however, were childless. As a result, soon after their young grandniece Sabina reached puberty, she was married (in 100) to P. Aelius Hadrianus (Hadrian, b. 76 ce), a distant relative: Hadrian's great-grandfather was the grandfather of Trajan and Ulpia Marciana. Whatever else this marriage did, it purposely rejected a close connection between the family of Trajan (and Hadrian) and any other within the Senatorial nobility. As such, Trajan both avoided angering all of the other Senatorial families who might interpret Sabina's marriage as a snub and avoided entangling alliances with another clan which surely would have thought itself at least the social equal of Trajan's family. Despite the political rationale behind this union and Plotina's enthusiasm for the match, Trajan is said to have had reservations about Hadrian as Sabina's husband, although the nature of these reservations is nowhere explained. Trajan's hesitancy over Sabina's marriage is all the more puzzling because, even before his elevation to imperial status, Hadrian had been established as Trajan's military and political protégé. Perhaps it was not the match itself, but the youth of Sabina at the time of its consummation which concerned Trajan. Another possible source of Trajan's concern might have been his knowledge of Hadrian's sexual orientation. One thing seems certain: although the union would not be happy, it is hardly likely that Trajan could have predicted Sabina's and Hadrian's personality clash, since Sabina was little more than a child when she wed. Hadrian also seems to have been cool to the match, but accepted it as necessary for his continued advancement. Regardless of the reservations involved, when this marriage was celebrated a new age was dawning, and Sabina became an important link between the two men who would determine the shape which that future would take. As the reign of Trajan unfolded productively, it became apparent that the woman in Hadrian's life was not to be Sabina, but Plotina, who was so enthusiastic a promoter of Hadrian's interests that some suspected her of being in love with him. If so, however, hers was more the affection of a mother than that of a lover. Being without a son of her own, Plotina lavished her maternal affections upon the next best thing. Nevertheless, she pampered Hadrian in a way as to intrude into the relationship between Hadrian and Sabina. This alone did not undermine their marriage, for at least two other factors stunted the development of much emotional and physical intimacy between Hadrian and Sabina. First, to whatever degree Hadrian might have been susceptible to feminine beauty (at least one source claims that he occasionally seduced the wives of important associates), he clearly harbored primarily homosexual inclinations. The most obvious evidence for this involved Hadrian's favorite, Antinoos, a handsome youth whom Hadrian kept close by his side even when traveling. On one such expedition, to Egypt in 130, Antinoos met a mysterious death by drowning in the Nile. Hadrian's grief as a result of this loss was so excessive that he founded a city (Antinoopolis) at the site, named a star after him, and dedicated statues to his memory in religious sanctuaries throughout the empire. Contemporary tongues wagged about the emperor's devotion. The second factor which precluded the development of intimacy between Sabina and Hadrian was Sabina herself. Undoubtedly pampered as a child, accustomed to being the center of much attention, and excited by the prospects of her politically significant marriage, she was, it is probable, quickly disillusioned by Hadrian's private aloofness, and her marginal (if publicly proper) role in his life. As a result, the sting—not of rejection, but of indifference—bred anger in Sabina, and then hatred. She was known to throw tantrums and to be ill-tempered in Hadrian's presence, and she even made it a source of some pride to have it known that the reason Hadrian remained childless was that she refused to have sex with him. When Trajan died in 117 in Asia Minor (after having been engaged in a war of conquest for the complete control of Mesopotamia), Plotina delayed an announcement of the death until she had assured Hadrian's uncontested accession. This was necessary because, although Hadrian had emerged as the obvious successor of Trajan by that time, the emperor had never formally adopted him as his legal heir. Why Trajan had not done so before 117 is a matter of conjecture, as is whether he actually lived long enough to adopt Hadrian. Plotina, who was with her husband when a stroke (some thought poison might have been involved) laid him low, claimed that Trajan had adopted Hadrian on his deathbed. However, the fact that the publication of this adoption came in letters which she, not Trajan, wrote and sent to Rome has allowed many, then as well as now, to question what really happened after Trajan fell ill. Regardless, Hadrian replaced Trajan, and quickly consolidated his hold on the throne. Plotina helped him do so and stood staunchly at his side until she herself died around 122, after which Hadrian had her deified. Thereafter, it would be only Sabina who graced the arm of Hadrian on appropriate public occasions, for although their mutual antipathy held, they remained married. Undoubtedly they did so because the Romans expected their emperors to be married. As well, Sabina was too well placed for Hadrian to abandon, and she provided cover for his homosexual affairs. (By and large, the Romans tended to disdain homosexuals.) Although she loathed Hadrian, Sabina enjoyed being the empress of Rome, with all of its perquisites. Hadrian's was mostly a peaceful reign, and was characterized by his extensive travels throughout the empire. Sabina accompanied her husband on these state visits to the provinces (including that to Egypt when Antinoos died), so there is ample testimony to the continuation of her public status throughout the Roman world. She was styled as the "Augusta" (after 128) and widely recognized as the "new Hera" (after 129), and her portrait even graced many a contemporary coin. Thus did Hadrian broadcast his "respect" for his spouse. Those close to the palace, however, knew a different story: their private altercations and disdain continued until death did them part. Although Hadrian maintained his distance from Sabina as much as possible, he clearly kept a close eye on her affairs. In 122, while the imperial couple was visiting Britain, two of Sabina's associates—Septicius Clarus (a praetorian praefect) and Seutonius Tranquillus (a director of correspondence and the famous imperial biographer)—were dismissed from public service, supposedly because they were "too informal" in their relationship with Sabina, but really because they were her friends. In the wake of these dismissals, Hadrian announced that he would have divorced Sabina too, if she had been a "private citizen." Thus did he admit how important she was to his possession of the throne. So did Sabina and Hadrian coexist until her death in 136. With their well-established antipathy widely if not universally known, it comes as no surprise that some blamed Sabina's death on Hadrian, either through poisoning or enforced suicide. Since the two had put up with one another for 36 years, however, there is no compelling reason to believe that Hadrian had a hand in Sabina's demise, although he surely took pleasure in her passing. Regardless, even in death Hadrian maintained an appropriate piety toward her memory by both proclaiming her a goddess and seeing to it that her ashes were placed in his mausoleum. Indeed, there is even a tinge of poetic justice in the fact that the fates of the two would be tied together for all of eternity, since both Hadrian and Sabina shared honorific inscriptions originally situated over the doorway of their common tomb. - LifeSketch: Titus Flavius T. f. T. n. Clemens was a nephew of the Roman Emperor Vespasian. He was the son of Titus Flavius Sabinus, consul in AD 52 and praefectus urbi during the reign of Nero, and a brother of Titus Flavius Sabinus, consul in AD 82. The emperors Titus and Domitian were his cousins. As a child, Clemens was besieged along with his family in the capitol, when the soldiers of his uncle, Vespasian, were approaching Rome. His father was captured and slain by the forces of Vitellius, who burnt the capitol, but the rest of the family escaped. Clemens' brother was consul with Domitian, shortly after the latter's accession, but the emperor put his cousin to death on the pretext that the herald proclaiming him consul had called him Imperator. In fact, the emperor was more likely motivated by his love for his cousin's wife, Julia Flavia (who, as the daughter of his brother Titus, was also his niece).[1] Clemens also married one of his cousins, Flavia Domitilla, daughter of Vespasian's daughter, Domitilla, who was thus also a niece of Domitian. They had two sons, whom Domitian intended to succeed him in the empire, renaming one of them Vespasian and the other Domitian. However, in AD 95, when Clemens and the emperor were consuls, Domitian had his cousin put to death.[2] According to Cassius Dio, Clemens was put to death on a charge of atheism, for which, he adds, many others who went over to the Jewish opinions were executed.[3] This may imply that Clemens had converted to Judaism or early Christianity, the former being more likely, and accompanied by circumcision.[4] For the same reason, his wife was banished to Pandataria.[5][6][7] To this Clemens in all probability is dedicated Basilica of San Clemente al Laterano, on the Caelian hill, which is believed to have been built originally in the fifth century, although its site is now occupied by a more recent, though very ancient, structure. In the year 1725 Cardinal Annibal Albani found under this church an inscription in honour of Flavius Clemens, martyr, which is described in a work called T. Flavii Clementis Viri Consularis et Martyris Tumulus illustratis.[8] Some connect Clemens with Clemens Romanus, perhaps the author of the Epistle to the Corinthians.[9] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titus_Flavius_Clemens_(consul)

- Father: Marcus CLAUSUS
- Birth: 530 BC, Regillus, Sabinum, Italy
- Residence: Aniene, Roman Empire
- Occupation: a wealthy Sabine merchant
- Title Of Nobility: Consul of the Roman Republic with Publius Servilius Priscus Structus
- Clan Name: founder of the Roman gens Claudia
- He received patrician rank (ie. Privileged not plebeian): Rome, Roma, Lazio, Italy
- LifeSketch: Appius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis or Inregillensis (fl. 505 – 480 BC) was the legendary founder of the Roman gens Claudia, and consul in 495 BC. He was the leading figure of the aristocratic party in the early Roman Republic. Appius Claudius was a wealthy Sabine from a town known as "Regillum". His original name was Attius Clausus, according to Livy; Suetonius gives Atta Claudius, while Dionysius of Halicarnassus gives Titus Claudius. From the Fasti consulares, it is known that Claudius' father was named Marcus. He had at least two sons: Appius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis, consul in 471 BC, and Gaius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis, consul in 460 BC. Appius Claudius Crassus, the decemvir, was his grandson. In 505 BC, shortly after the establishment of the Roman Republic, Rome successfully waged war against the Sabines, and in the following year, the Sabines were divided as to whether to retaliate or make peace with the Romans. Clausus favoured peace with the Romans, and as the faction favouring war became more powerful, he migrated to Rome with a large group of his clients, and took the name Appius Claudius. In recognition of his wealth and influence, he was admitted to the patriciate, and given a seat in the Senate, where he quickly became one of the leading men. His followers were allotted land on the far side of the Anio, and along with other Sabines formed the basis of the "Old Claudian" tribe. * Regillum or Inregillum was a town in ancient Sabinum, north of Rome, known chiefly as the original home of Appius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis. According to tradition, during the early years of the Roman Republic, the Sabines were debating whether to declare war against Rome. One of the leading members of the faction urging peace was Attius Clausus, a wealthy merchant of Regillum. In 504 BC, as the majority of the Sabines seemed ready to vote for war, Clausus and his retainers migrated to Rome, where they were warmly received. Clausus, who took the Latin name "Appius Claudius", was admitted to the patriciate, and given a seat in the Roman Senate. His followers, numbering some five hundred men capable of bearing arms, were granted land north of the Anio, where they later formed the basis of the tribus Claudia. For centuries, Claudius' descendants were among the most powerful and influential of all Roman families. The precise location of Regillum is not known, but it must have been in the neighborhood of Lake Regillensis, which was presumably named after it. The Battle of Lake Regillus was one of the most important events in the early Republic, as a Roman army under the command of the dictator Aulus Postumius Albus defeated an alliance of Latin towns, led by Octavius Mamilius, the dictator of Tusculum, which aimed to restore Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, the seventh and last King of Rome, to the throne. Postumius obtained the surname Regillensis as a result of his victory; Claudius presumably received it as a native of the town, although it is possible that he also participated in the battle. Many years later, Claudius' son, Gaius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis, who had been consul in 460 BC, is said to have retired to Regillum after failing to dissuade his nephew, Appius, the decemvir, from abusing the power of the Roman state; but he returned to defend Appius when the latter was impeached, and afterward remained at Rome.

- Also known as: Emmeline
- LifeSketch: From Medieval Lands (downloaded 16 August 2018, dvmansur): [Walter] m as her first husband, EMMELINE, daughter of --- (-after 27 Mar 1085). The Historia sancti Petri Gloucestriæ records the death "VI Kal Apr" 1085 of "Walterus fundator Sancti Petri Hereford", his burial "Gloucestriæ in capitulo", and the donation of "villam quinque hidarum Duntesborne tempore Serlonis abbatis" [abbot from 1072 to 1104] made by "uxor eius Ermelina"[31]. Domesday Book records “Roger de Lacy” holding Siddington in Gloucestershire, adding that "his mother holds it as her dower land"[32]. A charter of Stephen King of England dated 1138 confirmed donations to Gloucester St Peter including the donation by "Emelinæ uxoris Walterii de Laceio" of “Duntesburna"[33]. [There are indications that Emmeline may have married secondly Arnoul de Hesdin. Both families made numerous donations to Gloucester St Peter, although it has not yet proved possible to link any of the names of land donated to both families, but most significantly the Historia sancti Petri Gloucestriæ, in a list of holdings, records (in order) donations made by "Walterus de Lacy dedit Leden, Ernulfus de Hesding dedit Lyncoholt, Hermelina de Lacy dedit pro anima viri sui Duntesbourne…"[34]. This document confirms Emmeline’s two marriages, while the interposition of Arnoul’s name between Walter de Lacy and his wife Emmeline is best explained if he was her second husband. From a chronological point of view, the two marriages would fit. It should be emphasised that this suggestion is speculative. If it is correct, she could have been Emmeline, daughter of [Dreux de Baladon & his wife ---]. The reasoning behind this speculative parentage is discussed in the document WALES.]

- LifeSketch: Æthelburh of Kent (born 601,[1] sometimes spelled Æthelburg, Ethelburga, Æthelburga; Old English: Æþelburh, Æðelburh, Æðilburh, also known as Tate or Tata),[2][3] was an early Anglo-Saxon queen consort of Northumbria, the second wife of King Edwin. As she was a Christian from Kent, their marriage triggered the initial phase of the conversion of the pagan north of England to Christianity. Early life and marriage Æthelburh would have been born in the late 6th century, as the daughter of King Æthelberht of Kent (sometimes spelled Aethelberht) and his queen Bertha, and sister of Eadbald. In 625, she married Edwin of Northumbria as his second wife. A condition of their marriage was Edwin's conversion to Christianity and the acceptance of Paulinus's mission to convert the Northumbrians.[4][5] Æthelburh’s children with Edwin were: Eanflæd, Ethelhun, Wuscfrea and Edwen. Her daughter Eanflæd grew up under the protection of her uncle, King Eadbald of Kent. Bede, Ecclesiastical History (2.20) states that Æthelburh did not trust her brother, or Edwin's sainted successor Oswald, with the lives of Edwin's male descendants whom she sent to the court of King Dagobert I (her mother's cousin). Christianity and founding of monastery Saxon church at Lyminge founded by Æthelburh in 633, excavated in 2019 Stone in Lyminge Church marking the burial site of the founder King Edwin’s conversion was due to his marriage to Æthelburh, who brought her bishop Paulinus with her. Both Æthelburh and her mother, Bertha, received letters from popes Gregory and Boniface respectively, urging them to do their Christian duty by converting their pagan husbands. Their daughter Eanflaed was one of the first to be baptized in Northumbria.[6] After King Edwin was wounded, Æthelburh's alarm caused an early onset of childbirth. Both the mother, as well as the infant, appeared to be in danger. The prayers of Paulinus were offered for the queen and child. After they recovered, 12 of the royal households, as well as the baby, were baptized by Edwin’s permission and request.[7] According to the Kentish Royal Legend, after Edwin's death at the Battle of Hatfield Chase in 633, she returned to Kent. She then established one of the first Benedictine nunneries in England, at Lyminge, near Folkestone, which she led until her death in 647, and where her remains were later venerated.[5] Modern research has shown that the buildings at Lyminge were designed to contain a convent of monks as well as of nuns. The church is built from Roman masonry, and was possibly built out of the fragments of a villa, which was customary practice by Anglo-Saxons, or it may have been a Roman basilica.[1]

- Father: Eorcenberht of KENT
- Mother: Seaxburh QUEEN OF KENT
- Birth: ABT 635, Kingdom of Kent, Anglia
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Saints Æthelred and Æthelberht (also Ethelred, Ethelbert) according to the Kentish royal legend (attested in the 11th century) were princes of the Kingdom of Kent who were murdered in around AD 669, and later commemorated as saints and martyrs. Their story forms an important element in the legend of Saint Mildrith, because the monastery of Minster in Thanet is said to have been founded in atonement for the crime. Historical context King Eorcenberht of Kent seized the rule of Kent in 640 in precedence to his elder brother Eormenred. Both were sons of Eadbald of Kent (r. c. 616–640). The legend, contained in a Latin Passio, tells that Eormenred and his wife Oslafa had several children including the two sons Aethelred and Aethelberht, and a daughter Eormenbeorg, also known as Domne Eafe. Eafe married Merewalh, ruler of the Maegonsaetan, a people situated in the west Midlands in the Shropshire area. King Eorcenberht married Seaxburh, daughter of King Anna of East Anglia, and ruled as a Christian king: he was the first ruler to order the abandonment and destruction of idols throughout his kingdom, and to establish the forty days' fast of Lent to be observed by royal authority (Bede, Ecclesiastical History iii,8). He had two sons, Ecgberht and Hlothhere, and two daughters, Eormenhild and Eorcongota. On Eorconberht's death of the plague in 664, Ecgberht succeeded him as King of Kent. The legend Main article: Kentish Royal Legend See also: Domne Eafe § The legend According to the legend, the princes were very pious Christian youths and lived at Eastry, Kent, at a royal dwelling belonging to their cousin King Egberht. (It is likely that such a residence existed, for Sir Frank Stenton pointed out that the placename Eastry, comparable to Surrey in formation, represented an early administrative centre.) A royal retainer named Thunor wished to secure the succession of King Ecgberht from a possible rival claim by these youths. He therefore had them secretly murdered, and their bodies hidden beneath the royal seat in the Hall at Eastry. After they were missed, but nowhere found, the crime was revealed by a column of light which appeared shining above the place of concealment. When King Egberht learned of the crime he was filled with sorrow and remorse at the act which had been done in his name, and planned to have the bodies buried at Canterbury. However, the people charged with the task of taking the bodies there found it impossible to move them. After these efforts the king took advice from his religious leaders, who recommended that he have them taken to Wakering in the Kingdom of Essex for burial, where a monastery already existed. The site was probably Great Wakering, not many miles away from the possibly royal burial-site of Prittlewell, Essex. With this new destination the bodies consented to be moved, and were venerated in their final resting-place as royal Christian martyrs. At about this time Egberht's mother Queen Seaxburh founded her own double monastery at Minster in Sheppey, on the south bank of the Thames Estuary nearly opposite Wakering. The monastery at Reculver was founded in 669. Ecgberht then founded the monastery of Minster in Thanet, to be ruled over by the sister of the murdered princes. She was the mother of Saint Mildrith, who afterwards succeeded her as abbess. Some sources also claim that another monastery was established at Eastry for the same reason, over which a sister of Mildrith's ruled as abbess. Another sister, Mildburg, remained among the Magonsaetan and governed the monastery of Much Wenlock in Shropshire. In addition to the Latin Passio (edited by David Rollason) a version of the story appears in Roger of Wendover's Flores Historiarum (Flowers of History), compiled in the early thirteenth century. Excavations at Great Wakering have recently uncovered a site of Middle Saxon occupation including a fragment of ornamented stone-sculpture, which may derive from the place named in the legend.

- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - Clotilde (c. 474–545), was a princess of the kingdom of Burgundy. She was supposedly descended from the Gothic king Athanaric and became the second wife of the Frankish king Clovis I (r. 481–509) in 493. The Merovingian dynasty to which her husband belonged ruled Frankish kingdoms for over 200 years (450–758). Venerated as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church as well as by the Eastern Orthodox Church, she played a role in her husband's famous conversion to Christianity and, in her later years, became known for her almsgiving and penitential works of mercy. She is credited with spreading Christianity within western Europe. Biography Clotilde was born at the Burgundian court of Lyon, the daughter of King Chilperic II of Burgundy. Upon the death of Chilperic's father King Gondioc in 473, Chilperic and his brothers Gundobad and Godegisel divided their inheritance; Chilperic II apparently reigning at Lyon, Gundobad at Vienne, and Godegesil at Geneva. From the sixth century on, the marriage of Clovis and Clotilda was made the theme of epic narratives, in which the original facts were materially altered and the various versions found their way into the works of different Frankish chroniclers. According to Gregory of Tours (538–594), in 493 Chilperic II was slain by his brother Gundobad and his wife Caretena drowned with a stone hung around her neck, while of his two daughters, Chrona took the veil and Clotilde was exiled – it is, however, assumed that this tale is apocryphal. Butler's account follows Gregory. After the death of Chilperic, her mother seems to have made her home with Godegisil at Geneva, where her other daughter, Chrona, founded the church of Saint-Victor. Soon after the death of Chilperic in 493, Clovis asked and obtained the hand of Clotilde. They were married in 493. The marriage produced the following children: Ingomer (born and died 494). Chlodomer (495–524), King of the Franks at Orléans from 511. Childebert I (496–558), King of the Franks at Paris from 511. Chlothar I (497–561), King of the Franks at Soissons from 511, King of all Franks from 558. Clotilde (500–531), married Amalaric, King of the Visigoths. Clotilde (wife of Clovis) was brought up as a Christian and did not rest until her husband had abjured paganism and embraced Christianity. According to Gregory of Tours' Historia Francorum (History of the Franks), when Clotilde had their first child baptised, he died soon after. Clovis upbraided her; but when Chlodomer was born, she insisted on baptising him also. Although Chlodomer did indeed fall ill, he soon after recovered. More healthy children followed. Clotilde's victory came in 496, when Clovis converted to Christianity, baptised by Bishop Remigius of Reims on Christmas Day of that year. According to tradition, on the eve of the Battle of Tolbiac against the Alamanni, Clovis prayed to God, swearing to be baptised if he emerged victorious on the battlefield. When he did indeed triumph, Clovis readily took the faith. With him Clotilde built at Paris the Church of the Holy Apostles, afterwards known as the Abbey of St Genevieve. Significance Unusually, Clotilde was a Catholic Christian at a time when Goths, including the Burgundians, were Arian Christians. Therefore Clovis became a Catholic. This ensured that he had the support of the Eastern Roman Empire in his wars against his rival Arian Gothic tribes, since the Romans were Catholics. When the Franks eventually gained dominance over Western Europe, it was Catholicism which became the prevalent kind of Christianity, and Arianism died out. Later years After Clovis' death in 511, Clotilde retired to the Abbey of St. Martin at Tours. In 523 Clotilde's sons went to war against her cousin King Sigismund of Burgundy, the son of Gundobad, which led to Sigismund's deposition and imprisonment. Sigismund was assassinated the following year and his body thrown down a well in symbolic retaliation for the deaths of Clotilde's parents. Gregory of Tours claimed – and many others have followed – that Clotilde incited her sons to war as a means to revenge the supposed murder of her parents by Gundobad while others, such as Godefroid Kurth, find this unconvincing and apocryphal. Subsequently, her eldest son Chlodomer was killed during the following Burgundian campaign under Sigismund's successor King Godomar at the Battle of Vézeronce. Her daughter, also named Clotilde, also died about this time. Clotilde tried in vain to protect the rights of her three grandsons, the children of Chlodomer, against the claims of her surviving sons Childebert and Chlothar. Chlothar had two of them killed, while only Clodoald (Cloud) managed to escape and later chose an ecclesiastical career. She was equally unsuccessful in her efforts to prevent the civil discords between her children. After these failures, Clotilde appeared to dedicate herself to a saintly life. She occupied herself with the building of churches and monasteries, preferring to distance herself from the power struggles of the court. Churches associated with her are located at Laon, and Rouen. Clotilde died in 545 at the tomb of St. Martin of Tours, of natural causes; she was buried at her husband's side, in the Church of the Holy Apostles (now the Abbey of St Genevieve). Veneration Clotilde's cult made her the patron of queens, widows, brides and those in exile. In Normandy especially she was venerated as the patroness of the lame, those who came to a violent death and women who suffered from ill-tempered husbands. In art she is often depicted presiding over the baptism of Clovis, or as a suppliant at the shrine of Saint Martin. Several fine images of her remain, particularly in the 16th century stained glass window at Andelys. Her relics survived the French Revolution, and are housed in the Église Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles in Paris. Clotilde is the patron saint of Les Andelys, Normandy. In 511, the Queen founded a convent for young girls of the nobility there, which was destroyed by the Normans in 911. In its place was erected Our Lady’s Collegiate Church, which contains a statue of Saint Clotilde. Also in Les Andelys is Saint Clotilde's Fountain. The spring is popularly believed to heal skin diseases.

- Father: Athanaric King of the Tervingi Goths
- Mother: Gaatha SAINT Queen of the Visigoths
- Birth: ABT 365, Peuce Island, Scythia Minor, Roman Empire
- LifeSketch: Presbyter Bercus; Monk Arpilus; laymen and women Abibus, Agnus, Reasus, Igathrax, Iscoeus (Iskous), Silas, Signicus, Sonirilus, Suimbalus, Thermus, Phillus (Philgas), Bathusius, Anna, Alla, Larissa, Monco (Manca), Uirko (Virko), Animais (Animaida), Queen Gaatha, and Princess Duklida, were among twenty-six martyrs who were killed by the Goths around the year 375 under Jungerich, a persecutor of Christians. Ancient synaxaria of the Gothic Church recount the martyrdom of twenty-six Christians in the time of the emperors Valentinian, Valens, and Gratian. The historian Sozomen says that King Athanaric was enraged to see his subjects embracing Christianity because of the preaching of the Arian bishop Ulfilas. So, he ordered many of them to be tortured and executed, often without a trial. King Athanaric’s ministers placed a statue in a chariot and paraded it before the tents which Christians used for church services. Those who worshiped the idol and offered sacrifice were spared, the rest were burned alive in the tent. Jungerich gave orders to burn down a church during divine services. In the fiery inferno 308 people perished, of whom only twenty-one are known by name. There was also an anonymous man who came to the tent and confessed Christ. He was martyred with the others. Different manuscripts give variants of their names. In the reign of Valentinian and Theodosius (383-392), the Gothic king’s widow Gaatha (who was an Orthodox Christian) and her daughter Duclida gathered up the relics of the holy martyrs and brought them to Syria with the help of some priests and a layman named Thyellas. Gaatha later returned to her native land, where she was stoned and died as a martyr, along with her son Agathon. The relics of the holy martyrs were left to Duclida, who went to Cyzicus in Asia Minor and gave some of the relics for the founding of a church. Saint Duclida died in peace. The holy martyrs were commemorated on October 23 on the Gothic calendars. Feasts & Saints The Lives of the Saints Go to a specific date Today

- Mother: Emma MEROVINGIAN
- Birth: ABT 618, Canterbury, Kent, England
- Also known as: Princess Eanswyth of Kent
- Also known as: Eanswythe, Eanswith or Eanswide
- Founded the Benedictine Folkestone Priory, the first nunnery in England.: 630
- Title Of Nobility: Abbess, ABT 640, Regnum Cantuariorum
- LifeSketch: Saint Eanswith (born c. 630, Kent, England. Died c. 650, Folkestone, England), also spelled Eanswythe or Eanswide, was an Anglo Saxon princess, who is said to have founded Folkestone Priory, one of the first Christian monastic communities for women in Britain. Tradition has it that Eanswith founded the Benedictine Folkestone Priory, the first nunnery in England. She was supported in this by her father, Eadbald, who ruled as king of Kent from 616 to 640 CE. While the monastery was under construction, a pagan prince came to Kent seeking to marry Eanswythe. King Eadbald, whose sister St. Ethelburga had married the pagan King Edwin two or three years before, recalled that this wedding resulted in Edwin's conversion. Eanswythe, however, refused. This was the first women's monastery to be founded in England. St. Eanswythe lived there with her companions in the monastic life, and they may have been guided by some of the Roman monks who had come to England with St. Augustine in 597. She remained at the abbey until her death in 650. The first monastic site became abandoned by the 10th century, and began to be eroded by the sea, a problem which also afflicted a new foundation of 1095. A site further inland was provided for a new foundation of Folkestone Priory by William de Abrincis in 1137, with a church dedicated to St Mary and St Eanswythe. Saint Eanswith's day falls on September 12. Traditionally, this is the date on which her remains were translated to the new church in 1138. The priory was closed at the Reformation, and the Church became Folkestone Parish Church. During restoration work at the church in 1885 human remains were discovered in a lead reliquary, embedded within the church wall, which were identified as a 12th-century vessel, and the bones of a young woman. This led to the conclusion that they could be the translated relics of Saint Eanswith, hidden away at the Reformation. A new expert analysis by historians and archaeologists concluded in March 2020 that the remains are almost certainly that of Eanswith. In 2020, osteoarchaeologists were given the opportunity to examine the remains of a skeleton long thought to be the remains of St. Eanswythe. They concluded that the bones belonged to a young female. Radiocarbon dating confirmed that the remains were from the mid-7th century, adding to the evidence that this may well be St. Eanswythe. The results of DNA and isotope analysis are pending. It can never be proven that the remains are St. Eanswythe but the evidence certainly indicates that this could be the case. If so, these are the earliest remains yet discovered of an English saint, and of a relative of the British monarch. - From Wikipedia

- LifeSketch: Antiochian Orthodox Christian Diocese Commemorated on March 26 St. Gaatha was one of twenty-six martyrs who were killed by the Goths around 375 under Jungerich, a persecutor of Christians. Ancient synaxaria of the Gothic Church recount the martyrdom of twenty-six Christians in the time of Emperors Valentinian, Valens, and Gratian. King Jungerich was enraged to see his subjects embracing Christianity because of the preaching of the Arian bishop, Ulfilas, and therefore ordered many of them to be tortured and executed, often without trial. King Jungerich’s ministers placed a statue in a chariot and paraded it before the tents where Christians met for church services. Those who worshiped the idol and offered sacrifice were spared, but the rest were burned alive in the tent. Jungerich also gave orders to burn down a church during divine services. In the fiery inferno, 308 people perished, of whom only twenty-one are known by name. There was also an anonymous man who came to the tent and confessed Christ. He was martyred with the others. In the reign of Valentinian and Theodosius in the late fourth century, the Gothic king’s widow, Gaatha (who was an Orthodox Christian), and her daughter, Duclida, gathered up the relics of the holy martyrs and brought them to Syria with the help of some priests and a layman named Thyellas. Gaatha later returned to her native land where she was stoned and died as a martyr along with her son, Agathon. The relics of the holy martyrs were left to Duclida, who went to Cyzicus in Asia Minor and gave some of the relics for the founding of a church. St. Duclida died in peace.
