- LifeSketch: “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “RICHARD FITZ GILBERT, of Bienfaite and Orbec, Normandy, lord of Clare, Suffolk, Tonbridge, Kent, Standon, Hertfordshire, Blechingley, Surrey, etc., son of Gilbert Fitz Godfrey, Count of Brionne, born about 1030-35. He married ROHESE (or ROHAIS, ROHAID, ROAXIDIS) GIFFARD, daughter of Walter Giffard, of Longueville-sur-Scie (Seine-Maritime), Normandy, Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire, etc., by Agnes, daughter of Gerard Flaitel (or Fleitel). They had six sons, Roger, Gilbert, Walter, Richard [Abbot of Ely], Robert, and Godfrey, and four daughters, Rohese, Alice (wife of Walter Tirel), and Avice. He was among those consulted about the proposed invasion of England in the assembly at Bonneville-sur-Touques in 1066, but there is no direct evidence of his personal participation at Hastings or in the campaign. Nevertheless, he was a significant figure soon afterwards and occurs as a witness of royal charters throughout the reign of King William the Conqueror. He was rewarded with no fewer than 176 lordships, which consisted of two concentrations of lands, one in Kent and Surrey, and the other in Suffolk and Essex. His holdings at Tonbridge, Kent and Clare, Suffolk were both given motte and bailey castles. During the king's absence, he served as Joint Chief Justiciar. He played a leading role in suppressing the rebellion of Roger de Breteuil, Earl of Hereford and Ralph de Gael in 1075 or 1076. In 1078 or 1079 he and his wife, Rohese, sent to Bec Abbey for a colony of monks to replenish the vacant convent at Neotsbury, Huntingdonshire. Sometime before 1086 he granted the monks of Bec his manors of Tooting and Streatham, and land in Horsham (in Walton-on-Thames), all in Surrey. Sometime before 1090 he confirmed to the monks of Bec two thirds of his demesne tithes and one villain in Standon, Hertfordshire; and two thirds of his demesne tithes in Blechingley, Chivington, Woodmansteme, Tolworth, Chipstead, Betchworth, and Walton Leigh, Surrey and houses in Southwark, Surrey and Tonbridge, Kent. RICHARD FITZ GILBERT died about 1090, and was buried at St. Neots, Huntingdonshire. His widow, Rohese, was still living in 1113, when she granted the whole of her manor of Eynesbury, Huntingdonshire to St. Neot's Priory, Huntingdonshire. - Father: Robert FITZROY, 1st Earl of Gloucester
- Mother: Mabel FITZHAMON, Countess of Gloucester
- Birth: 1124, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
- LifeSketch: “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “ROBERT FITZ ROY, in right of his wife, of Gloucester, Bristol, Tewkesbury, and Cardiff, seigneur of Creully in Calvados, and Torigny in Manche, Normandy, illegitimate son, probably born about 1090. He witnessed charters of his father the king from about April 1113. He fought at the Battle of Brémulé in 1119, where his father, King Henry I, defeated King Louis VI of France. He married before 1122 MABEL FITZ ROBERT, daughter and heiress of Robert Fitz Hamon, of Gloucester, Bristol, Tewkesbury, and Cardiff, seigneur of Creully in Calvados, and Torigny in Manche, Normandy, hereditary Governor of Caen, by Sybil, daughter of Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury. They had six sons, William [Earl of Gloucester], Philip, Hamon, Roger [Bishop of Worcester], Richard [seigneur of Creully], and Robert, and two daughters, Maud and Mabel. By an unknown mistress, he also had an illegitimate son, Richard [Bishop of Bayeux]. He was created Earl of Gloucester between June and September 1122. In 1123 he brought a force to assist in the capture of Brionne Castle, which was held by rebellious Norman barons. In 1126 he had the custody of his uncle, Robert, Duke of Normandy, as a prisoner at Bristol, and later at Cardiff. The same year he secured a working relationship with the Welsh-dominated church of south Wales, under its aggressive bishop, Urban. In 1127 he did homage to the Empress Maud, recognizing her as his father's successor in the kingdom. In 1130 he sanctioned the foundation of Neath Abbey. In 1133, following the death of Richard, Bishop of Bayeux, he was sent by his father to Bayeux to enquire as to the fees and services due to the see by its barons, knights, and vavasours. He was present at his father's death at Lions-le-Forêt in Dec. 1135, and had 60,000 livres from him, apparently as executor. On Stephen's subsequent accession to the English throne and his recognition as Duke by the Normans, Robert gave up Falaise to his agents, but removed his father's treasure. In March 1136 he returned to England, and after Easter did homage for his English lands. About this time or in the following year he founded St. James's Priory at Bristol. In 1137 he accompanied Stephen to Normandy, but they quarrelled, and next year his English and Welsh estates were forfeited. Thereupon he prepared for war with Stephen and took up the cause of his half-sister, Maud, in Normandy. In Sept. 1139 he landed in England with Maud and took her to Arundel Castle, and became her commander-in-chief in the civil war that ensued. His first significant campaign, once the empress was established in England, was directed at the city of Worcester, which he sacked 7 November 1139. In May 1140 he was delegated by his sister to negotiate at Bath with the king' envoys, but nothing came of the meeting. Later in 1140 he and the Earl of Warwick led a successful raid on Nottingham. In 1141 he and his son-in-law, Ranulph, Earl of Chester, recruited a large army, including a force of Welsh under the kings of Glamorgan and Gwynedd. Their army encountered the king's army near Lincoln and dispersed it, capturing the king himself. The king was removed to Gloucester and then to Bristol, Earl Robert's principal English castle. He subsequently accompanied Maud in her progress to Winchester and London, and when the citizens drove her out, he fled with her to Oxford. He was captured at Stockbridge 14 Sept. 1141, and taken prisoner to Rochester. Shortly afterwards, he was exchanged for King Stephen. In June 1142 Maud sent him over to her husband, Geoffrey of Anjou, to urge him to invade England; Geoffrey declined to help until he had conquered Normandy, whereupon Robert joined him in the campaign. Sometime between 1141-3, probably in June 1142, he signed a treaty friendship with Miles, Earl of Hereford, by which the two men agreed to support each other, especially in the war between King Stephen and Empress Maud. In 1143 he defeated King Stephen at Wilton. In 1144 he blockaded Malmesbury, Stephen refusing to battle; but Maud's party was so much reduced that Stephen was able to take Faringdon, which Robert had fortified. He witnessed a charter of Henry d'Oilly in the period, 1144-47. In the spring of 1147 he took Henry, Maud's son, back to Wareham and sent him over to Anjou. In his last year, probably on his deathbed, he made moves to assist the Cistercians, who were attempting to set up a house in upland Glamorgan; the resultant abbey of Margam counted him as its founder. - Father: Robert FITZROBERT
- Mother: Hawise DE REVIERS
- Birth: 1144, Gloucestershire, England
- LifeSketch: Royal Ancestry by Douglas Richardson, Vol. 2 pg 124/25 At an unknown date, Mabel, lady of Maisoncelles [grand] daughter of earl Robert and mother of Jordan de Campo Ernulfi, confirmed to the canons regular of Plessis the gift by her son, Jordan, of the church of St. Amand of Maisoncelles[-la-Jourdain] (dept. Calvados, arr. and cant. Vire) in alms for ever. In the period, c.1193-1211, his widow, Mabel, confirmed the gift of the manors of Fleet and Ibberton, Dorset made by her mother, Hawise de Redvers, to her son, Jordan de Champernoun. In 1198 she was sued in a plea in Cornwall by Hugh de Beauchamp. In 1200 she appointed her son Richard [de Champernoun], to represent her in a plea of land against William de Botreaux in Ludgvan, Cornwall. About the year 1200 as "Mabel, daughter of Robert, son of the Earl of Gloucester," she confirmed to John son of Richard the Butler the manor of Conarton (in Gwithian), Cornwall, excepting Penburn and Lugan, for 30 silver marks and one caparisoned horse of value of two marks, together with the service of Philip de Caul, Alfred de Trevitho, and Enoch. In 1201 William de Botreaux sued her in a plea of land at Ludgvan, Cornwall. In 1201, as "Mabil' de Soliis," she held 16 knights' fees of the Honour of Gloucester. Following the loss of Normandy in 1204 her lands at Umberleigh Devon were confiscated and granted in 1205 by King John to Master Serlo. About the same time her lands at Hanford, Dorset were likewise confiscated by the king (they being considered land of the Normans) and were granted to Alan de Roterbiaus.

- Father: Robert FitzRihard DE CLARE
- Mother: Matilda Maud DE SENLIS
- Birth: 1124, Little Dunmow, Essex, England
- Title (Nobility): 2nd Lord of Little Dunmow
- LifeSketch: Walter Fitz Robert of Woodham Walter (c.1124–1198), lord of Little Dunmow, Essex, was steward under Stephen of England, having succeeded to that position upon the death of his father, Robert Fitz Richard. Walter died in 1198 and was buried at Little Dunmow, in the choir of the priory of Austin canons. Walter Fitz Robert was married twice. Sources conflict as to which of the two wives (Maud de Lucy or Margaret de Bohun, daughter of Humphrey I de Bohun) was the first wife. He and Maud de Lucy, daughter of Richard de Luci, had the following children: 1. Robert Fitzwalter, a Magna Carta Surety 2. Alice Fitz Walter, married Gilbert Peche. His father, Hamon Peche, was sheriff of Cambridgeshire. His mother, Alice Peverel, inherited, with her sisters, the estate of Picot of Cambridge from their father, who was the son of Pain Peverel (standard bearer to Robert Curthose in the Holy Land). The sisters inherited when their only brother, William, died in Jerusalem. Descendants include Elizabeth de Burgh and Dionisie de Munchensi. 3. Richard FitzWalter 4. Walter FitzWalter 5. Maud Fitzwalter When Robert, and his co-conspirators, fled after being implicated in the 1212 plot against King John, John required that the barons present hostages to show their loyalty. Alice and Gilbert Peche had the same requirement placed against them; one of the hostages was their daughter, Alice. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Fitz_Robert ------------------------------------------------------------------ “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “WALTER FITZ ROBERT, Knt., of Little Dunmow, Burnham, Henham, and Woodham Walter, Essex, Hempnall, Norfolk, Daventry, Northamptonshire, Poslingworth, Suffolk, seigneur of Meri in Normandy, etc., son and heir, born before 1134. He married (1st) MAUD DE LUCY, daughter of Richard de Lucy, Knt., of Chipping Ongar, Essex, Diss, Norfolk, etc., Chief Justiciar of England,* by Rohese, daughter of William of Boulogne [see LUCY 5 for her ancestry]. Her maritagium included the manors of Chigwell, Essex and Diss, Norfolk. They had three sons, 1. Richard, 2. Robert, and 3. Walter [Precentor of St. Paul's, Vicar of Burnham, Essex], and two daughters, 4. Maud and 5. Alice. He gave the advowsons of Woodham Walter (c. 1167) and Burnham (c. 1170), both in Essex, to the Hospitallers. In 1155 he gave the church of Burnham on Crouch, Essex to Dunmow Priory. In the period, 1167-1170, he gave the advowsons of Burnham and Woodham Walter, Essex to the Hospitallers. Sometime about 1170 he granted his warhorse and arms to the Hospitaliers on his decease. His first wife, Maud, was presumably living about 1170. About 1175 he gave three mills and various tracts of land in Daventry and Drayton, Northamptonshire to St. Mary of La Charite and the monks of St. Augustine in Daventry. He also gave the oblations of his household to the monks of Daventry to maintain the lights in the priory church. He married (2nd) before c.1181 MAUD DE BOHUN, widow of Henry d'Oilly (died c. 1163), of Hook Norton, Oxfordshire, Bradenham, Buckinghamshire, heir and daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, of Trowbridge, Newton Tony, Wilsford, etc., Wiltshire, Steward to Kings Henry I, Stephen, and Henry II of England, by Margaret (or Margery), daughter Miles of Gloucester, 1st Earl of Hereford, Constable of Gloucester [see BOHUN 3 for her ancestry]. They had one son, 1. Simon. Sometime prior to 1180 he gave the advowsons of Wimbish, Essex and St. Andrew (Holborn), London to St. Neots Priory, Cambridgeshire. About 1181 he made notification of his sale to Gilbert Foliot, Bishop of London, of Walter Cheriesson, natiuus, with all his children and descendants. Sometime in the period, c.1181-98, he gave the monks of Stoke by Clare, Suffolk a dwelling-house and seven acres in Merdesford in free alms in his own cultura for the soul of Maud de Lucy his wife. Sometime in the period, c.1181-98, he granted the church of Keddington, Lincolnshire to Daventry Priory. Sometime prior to 1193, he gave the church of Heveningham, Suffolk to the monks of Bec dwelling at St. Neots. SIR WALTER FITZ ROBERT died 1198, and was buried in the choir at Dunmow Priory, Essex. His widow, Maud, was living in Easter Term 1201. Children of Walter Fitz Robert, Knt., by Maud de Lucy: i. ROBERT FITZ WALTER [see next]. ii. MAUD FITZ WALTER, married (1st) WILLIAM DE LUVETOT, of Sheffield, Yorkshire [see FURNIVAL 6], (2nd) ERNULF DE MANDEVILLE, of South Mimms, Middlesex [see FURNIVAL 61. iii. Pharamus of Boulogne was near "kinsman" [nepos] of Queen Maud of Boulogne, wife of King Stephen of England [see Arnold Symeonis Monachi Opera Omnia 2 (Rolls Set.) (1885): 310]. For Pharamus of Boulogne's descent from the Counts of Boulogne, see Tanner Families, Friends, & Allies: Boulogne & Politics in Northern France & England (2004): 291 (chart).]”

Mabel FITZROBERT OF GLOUCESTER
\-Mabel FITZHAMON, Countess of Gloucester
- Father: Robert FITZROY, 1st Earl of Gloucester
- Mother: Mabel FITZHAMON, Countess of Gloucester
- Birth: 23 NOV 1112, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England
- Also known as: William Fitzrobert 2nd Earl Of Gloucester
- Also known as: Earl William Fitz Robert
- He served as Governor of Wareham and looked after the baronial estates when his father: fell into the hands of partisans at Winchester and was exchanged for King Stephen.
- He overthrew Henry de Tracy at Castle Cary.: 1147
- Title Of Nobility: 2nd Earl of Gloucester (Predecessor: Sir Robert de Caen; Successor: John de Mortain)
- He made an alliance with Roger de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford, by which they agreed: to aid each other against all men except Henry II of England.
- He and his wife and son were captured by the Welsh Lord of Senghenydd, Ifor Bach: ("Ivor the Little") and carried away into the woods, where they were held as prisoners until he redressed Ivor's grievances.
- LifeSketch: William Fitz Robert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester (23 November 1116 – 23 November 1183) was the son and heir of Sir Robert de Caen, 1st Earl of Gloucester, and Mabel FitzRobert of Gloucester, daughter of Robert Fitzhamon and nephew of Empress Matilda. William FitzRobert was the son of Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester, an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England, during whose reign William was born. Thus William was a nephew of the Empress Maud and a cousin of King Stephen, the principal combatants of the English Anarchy period. It also meant that William is the great-grandson of the famed William the Conqueror. Early career In October 1141, William looked after the Baronial estates, when his father fell into the hands of partisans at Winchester. His father was exchanged for King Stephen, and during his father's absence in Normandy in 1144 he served as Governor of Wareham. In 1147, he overthrew Henry de Tracy at Castle Cary. In 1154 he made an alliance with Roger de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford, by which they agreed to aid each other against all men except Henry II of England. FitzRobert granted Neath, a town in Glamorgan, a charter. He was Lord of the manor of Glamorgan, as well as Caerleon, residing chiefly at Cardiff Castle. It was there that in 1158 he and his wife and son were captured by the Welsh Lord of Senghenydd, Ifor Bach ("Ivor the Little") and carried away into the woods, where they were held as prisoners until the Earl redressed Ivor's grievances. Relationship with King Henry II In 1173 the earl took the King's part against his sons, but thereafter he appears to have fallen under suspicion, for the following year he submitted to the King, and in 1175 surrendered to him Bristol Castle. Because his only son and heir Robert died in 1166, Earl William made John, the younger son of King Henry II, heir to his earldom, in conformity with the King's promise that John should marry one of the Earl's daughters, if the Church would allow it, they being related in the third degree. Earl William was present in March 1177 when the King arbitrated between the Kings of Castile and Navarre, and in 1178, he witnessed Henry's charter to Waltham Abbey. But during the King's struggles with his sons, when he imprisoned a number of magnates of whose loyalty he was doubtful, Earl William was among them. Family and children He was married to Hawise de Beaumont of Leicester, daughter of Robert de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Leicester and Amica de Gael and had children: 1. Robert fitz William (1151, Cardiff, Glamorganshire – 1166, Cardiff, Glamorganshire). 2. Mabel fitz William, married Amaury V de Montfort, her son Amaury briefly being Earl of Gloucester 3. Amice fitz William, d. 1220. Married Richard de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford, their descendants eventually inherited the Earldom of Gloucester. 4. Isabel, Countess of Gloucester. She was married three times: - John of England - Geoffrey FitzGeoffrey de Mandeville, 2nd Earl of Essex, Earl of Gloucester - Hubert de Burgh, 1st Earl of Kent The earl died in 1183; his wife Hawise survived him. Since their only son, Robert, predeceased his father, their daughters became co-heirs to the feudal barony of Gloucester. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Fitz_Robert,_2nd_Earl_of_Gloucester ------------------------------------------------------------------- Royal Ancestry by Douglas Richardson, Vol. 1 pg 43, 247, Vol. 2 pg 180, 514; Vol. 3 pg 88/558; Vol. 4 pg 559 2nd Earl of Gloucester, lord of Glamorgan and Caerleon, seigneur of Torigny in Manche, Normandy, etc., Governor of Wareham Castle, 1144, son and heir. They had one son, Robert (living c.1170), and three daughters, Mabel, Amice, and Isabel. In 1128 he witnessed an agreement between his father and the Abbot of Fecamp. In 1141 he served as surety for his father, then a prisoner at Rochester. In 1147 he overthrew Henry de Tracy at Castle Cary. Sometime in the period, 1147-50, probably before March 1148/9, he signed a treaty with Roger, Earl of Hereford, by which William agreed t hold faith and give aid to Roger as his man, against all men except their lord, Henry; William promised aid especially for the purpose of disinherity Gilbert de Lacy. Sometime in the period, 1147-83, he granted Margam Abbey land in Margam, in echange for the land of Baldwin the Harper of Newborough. Sometime in the period, 1147-83, he gave to the church and monks of St. Giles, Little Malvern, Worcestershire ten acres in the forest of Malvern with appurtenances in the said forest for inclosure and cultivation. In 1148 he gave a confirmation to Gloucester jointly with his mother. In 1153 he was one of the witnesses to the agreement between King Stephen and Henry, Duke of Normandy [afterwards King Henry II]; he also witnessed a charter of Duke Henry dated at Bristol. In 1158 he and his wife and son Robert were captured at Cardiff Castle by Ivor the Little and carried into the woods, where they were held as prisoners until the earl redressed Ivor's grievances. He witnessed a charter of his father-in-law, Robert, Earl of Leicester, dated c.1150-60. He founded Keynsham Priory in Somerset in 1169, and was a benefactor to many other religious foundations. About 1170 he granted his son, Robert, land in Margam, which Robert thereupon gave to Abbot Conan and the convent. In 1173 he took the king's part against his sons, and later that year went to the help of the king's forces at the Battle of Fornham. In 1174 he submitted to the king, and in 1175 he surrendered Bristol Castle to him. In 1178 he witnessed King Henry's charter to Waltham Abbey. In 1183 the king imprisoned a number of magnates of whose loyalty he was doubtful, including Earl William, About 1183 Earl William granted Walter Lageles land which his father held, for an annual rent of eight shillings. About 1183 he granted Kenaithur son of Herbert son of Godwinet and his brothers the lands of Keleculam and Treikik. --------------------------------------------------------- Foundation for Medieval Genealogy WILLIAM FitzRobert, son of ROBERT Fitzroy Earl of Gloucester & his wife Mabel [Matilda or Sibylle] FitzRobert (23 Nov [1112]-23 Nov 1183, bur Keynsham Abbey, Somerset). - Title Of Nobility: 1st Earl of Gloucester; Comte de Meulan
- Illegitimate son of King Henry I of England: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Robert FitzRoy, 1st Earl of Gloucester (c. 1090 – 31 October 1147) (alias Robert Rufus, Robert de Caen, Robert Consul) was an illegitimate son of King Henry I of England. He was the half-brother of the Empress Matilda, and her chief military supporter during the civil war known as The Anarchy, in which she vied with Stephen of Blois for the throne of England. Robert was probably the eldest of Henry's many illegitimate children. He was born before his father's accession to the English throne, either during the reign of his grandfather William the Conqueror or his uncle William Rufus. He is sometimes and erroneously designated as a son of Nest, daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr, last king of Deheubarth, although his mother has been identified as a member of "the Gay or Gayt family of north Oxfordshire", possibly a daughter of Rainald Gay (fl. 1086) of Hampton Gay and Northbrook Gay in Oxfordshire. Rainald had known issue Robert Gay of Hampton (died c. 1138) and Stephen Gay of Northbrook (died after 1154). A number of Oxfordshire women feature as the mothers of Robert's siblings. Robert may have been a native of Caen or he may have been only Constable and Governor of that city, jure uxoris. Robert's father had contracted him in marriage to Mabel FitzHamon, daughter and heir of Robert Fitzhamon, but the marriage was not solemnized until June 1119 at Lisieux. His wife brought him the substantial honours of Gloucester in England and Glamorgan in Wales, and the honours of Sainte-Scholasse-sur-Sarthe and Évrecy in Normandy, as well as Creully. After the White Ship disaster late in 1120, and probably because of this marriage, in 1121 or 1122 his father created him Earl of Gloucester. Family Robert and his wife Mabel FitzHamon married in 1119, and they had seven children: 1. William FitzRobert (c.1121 – 1183): succeeded his father as 2nd Earl of Gloucester 2. Roger FitzRobert (c. 1123 – 1179): Bishop of Worcester 3. Hamon FitzRobert, knight (c. 1124 – 1159): killed at the siege of Toulouse. 4. Richard FitzRobert, Lord of Creully (c. 1125 – 1175): succeeded his mother as Sire de Creully. 5. Matilda FitzRobert (c. 1126 – 1189): married in 1143 Ranulf de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester. 6. Mabel FitzRobert: married Aubrey de Vere 7. Philip FitzRobert, Lord of Cricklade (c. 1130 – 1148) He also had four illegitimate children: 1. Richard FitzRobert (died 1142): Bishop of Bayeux [mother: Isabel de Douvres, sister of Richard de Douvres, bishop of Bayeux (1107–1133)] 2. Robert FitzRobert (died 1170): Castellan of Gloucester, married in 1147 Hawise de Reviers (daughter of Baldwin de Reviers, 1st Earl of Devon and his first wife Adelisa), had daughter Mabel FitzRobert (married firstly Jordan de Chambernon and secondly William de Soliers) 3. Mabel FitzRobert: married Gruffud, Lord of Senghenydd, son of Ifor Bach. 4. Thomas FitzRobert Relationship with King Stephen There is evidence in the contemporary source, the Gesta Stephani, that Robert was proposed by some as a candidate for the throne, but his illegitimacy ruled him out: "Among others came Robert, Earl of Gloucester, son of King Henry, but a bastard, a man of proved talent and admirable wisdom. When he was advised, as the story went, to claim the throne on his father's death, deterred by sounder advice he by no means assented, saying it was fairer to yield it to his sister's son (the future Henry II of England), than presumptuously to arrogate it to himself." This suggestion cannot have led to any idea that he and Stephen were rivals for the Crown, as Geoffrey of Monmouth in 1136 referred to Robert as one of the 'pillars' of the new King's rule. The capture of King Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln on 2 February 1141 gave the Empress Matilda the upper hand in her battle for the throne, but by alienating the citizens of London she failed to be crowned Queen. Her forces were defeated at the Rout of Winchester on 14 September 1141, and Robert of Gloucester was captured nearby at Stockbridge. The two prisoners, King Stephen and Robert of Gloucester, were then exchanged, but by freeing Stephen, the Empress Matilda had given up her best chance of becoming queen. She later returned to France, where she died in 1167, though her son succeeded Stephen as King Henry II in 1154. Robert of Gloucester died in 1147 at Bristol Castle, where he had previously imprisoned King Stephen, and was buried at St James' Priory, Bristol, which he had founded. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert,_1st_Earl_of_Gloucester .................................................................................... “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “ROBERT FITZ ROY, in right of his wife, of Gloucester, Bristol, Tewkesbury, and Cardiff, seigneur of Creully in Calvados, and Torigny in Manche, Normandy, illegitimate son, probably born about 1090. ROBERT FITZ ROY, 1st Earl of Gloucester, died at Bristol 31 October 1147, and was buried in the Priory church of St. James, BristoL His widow, Mabel, Countess of Gloucester, died 29 Sept. 1157.

- Father: Thoredi FITZ TORET Wroxeter
- Mother: Unknown Spouse of Thoredi TURET
- Birth: 1135, Moreton Corbet, Wem, Shropshire, England
- LifeSketch: «b»Biography«/b» Peter FitzToret, who appears first in 1160, was more probably the grandson or great-grandson, than the son of Toret. In the year a Donum of £46 4s 4d was assessed on the greater proprietors of Shropshire. Peter FitzTured's proportion was a considerable one, viz. 7s 3d, but it was excused by a Writ of King Henry II. IN 1167, the Demesne-lands of Peter FitzTorette paid an amercement of 6s 8d, set upon them by Alan de Nevill, then Justice of the Forest. Peter fitz Thoret in 1180 attests deeds of William fitz Alan (II), of Madoc, son of Gervase Goch. It was the daughter of this William Fitz Alan who married Dr Walter Pershale I. Peter Fitz Thoret also attested many deeds of Walter de Dunstanville. In these attestations, none of which can be dated later than 1194, he is often followed by his sons, Philip and Bartholomew, one or both of them, and incidentally by a third son, Walter. It is further probable that Gerard fitz Toret, of Evelith, was a fourth son of Peter fitz Toret. Philip, the eldest of the above sons, died without issue, and in his father's lifetime. He was the second son.

- Birth: 31 MAR 356, Hispania, Roman Empire
- Title Of Nobility: Empress of the Roman Empire
- Clan Name: Theodosian Dynasty
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - Aelia Flavia Flaccilla (31 March 356 – 386), was a Roman empress and first wife of the Roman Emperor Theodosius I. She was of Hispanian Roman descent. During her marriage to Theodosius, she gave birth to two sons – future Emperors Arcadius and Honorius – and a daughter, Aelia Pulcheria. According to Laus Serenae ("In Praise of Serena"), a poem by Claudian, both Serena and Flaccilla were from Hispania. A passage of Themistius (Oratio XVI, De Saturnino) has been interpreted as identifying Claudius Antonius, Praetorian prefect of Gaul from 376 to 377 and Roman consul in 382, to be her father. However the relation is considered doubtful. In 1967, John Robert Martindale, later one of several article writers in the Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire, suggested that the passage actually identifies Antonius as the brother-in-law of Theodosius. However the passage is vague enough to allow Afranius Syagrius, co-consul of Antonius in 382, to be the brother-in-law in question. The only kin clearly identified in primary sources was her nephew Nebridius, son of an unnamed sister. He married Salvina, a daughter of Gildo. Their marriage was mentioned by Jerome in his correspondence with Salvina. They had a son and a daughter. Marriage In about 375–376, Flaccilla married Theodosius I, a son of Count Theodosius. At the time Theodosius had fallen out of favor with Valentinian I and had withdrawn to civilian life in Cauca, Gallaecia. Their first son Arcadius was born prior to the elevation of his parents on the throne. Their second son Honorius was born on 9 September 384. Their daughter Pulcheria has been suggested to have been born prior to the elevation of her parents to the throne due to another passage of Laus Serenae. She predeceased her parents as mentioned in the writings of Gregory of Nyssa. A younger Gratian – mentioned alongside the imperial children by Ambrose – has at times been suggested as a third son; however, Gregory of Nyssa reports the existence of only three imperial children and other sources do not mention Gratian. Gratian was possibly a relation of some sort but not an actual member of the Theodosian dynasty. Valens emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire was killed in the Battle of Adrianople (9 August 378). He was survived by his wife Albia Dominica and his daughters Anastasia and Carosa. He had however survived his only son, Valentinianus Galates. His nephew Gratian, Emperor of the Western Roman Empire, was his heir and assumed control of the Eastern Empire with his younger half-brother Valentinian II as his nominal co-ruler. On 19 January, Gratian declared Theodosius, magister militum per Illyricum, to be his new colleague in the Eastern Roman Empire. Theodosius seems to have been the senior officer of Roman origins available for promotion at the time. Merobaudes and Frigeridus, the two magistri militum in praesenti were probably not considered due to their Germanic origins. Several other equivalent positions remained vacant since the deaths of their last holders in Adrianople. At this point Flaccilla became the Empress consort and was given the title Augusta. She was a fervent supporter of the Nicene Creed. Sozomen reports her preventing a conference between Theodosius and Eunomius of Cyzicus who served as figurehead of Anomoeanism, the most radical sect of Arians, who believed that Jesus was in no way similar to the Father. Ambrose and Gregory of Nyssa praise her Christian virtue and comment on her role as "a leader of justice" and "pillar of the Church". Theodoret reports on her works of charity, personally tending to the disabled. He quotes her saying that "To distribute money belongs to the imperial dignity, but I offer up for the imperial dignity itself personal service to the Giver." She died early in 386. Her death is mentioned by (among others) Claudian, Zosimus, Philostorgius and Joannes Zonaras. According to the Chronicon Paschale, the Palatium Flaccillianum of Constantinople was named in her honor. A statue of her was placed within the Byzantine Senate. Sainthood She is commemorated as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church, her feast day being 14 September.

- LifeSketch: Baldwin I (probably 830s – 879), also known as Baldwin Iron Arm and Baudouin, was the first margrave of Flanders. Early sources identify Baldwin (Baudouin) as the son of Odacre (also spelled Audacer) ruler of Flanders. Odacre is believed to have died when his son was still very young, too young to rule. It is not known who ruled Flanders between Odacre's death and the time his son was appointed. When Baldwin first appears in the records he was already a count, presumably in the area of Flanders, but this is not known. Count Baldwin rose to prominence when he eloped with Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, king of West Francia. Judith had previously been married to Æthelwulf and Æthelbald, kings of Wessex, but after the latter's death in 860, she returned to France. Around the Christmas of 861, at the instigation of Baldwin and with her brother Louis's consent, Judith escaped the custody into which she had been placed in the city of Senlis, Oise after her return from England. She fled north with Count Baldwin. Charles had given no permission for a marriage and tried to capture Baldwin, sending letters to Rorik of Dorestad and Bishop Hungar, forbidding them to shelter the fugitive. After Baldwin and Judith had evaded his attempts to capture them, Charles had his bishops excommunicate the couple. Judith and Baldwin responded by travelling to Rome to plead their case with Pope Nicholas I. Their plea was successful and Charles was forced to accept the situation. The marriage took place on 13 December 862 in Auxerre. By 870, Baldwin had acquired the lay-abbacy of Saint Peter's Abbey in Ghent and is assumed to have also acquired the counties of Flanders and Waasland, or parts thereof by this time. Baldwin I and Judith had four children: - Charles, who was named after his maternal grandfather but died at a young age - Baldwin II (c. 866 – 918), who succeeded as margrave of Flanders - Ralph (c. 869 – murdered 896), who became count of Cambrai around 888; he and his brother joined King Zwentibold of Lotharingia in 895, attacked Vermandois and captured Arras, Saint-Quentin and Peronne, and ended up captured and killed by Herbert I of Vermandois - Guinidilda, who married Wilfred I the Hairy, Count of Barcelona Baldwin developed himself as a very faithful and stout supporter of Charles and played an important role in the continuing wars against the Vikings. He is named in 877 as one of those willing to support the emperor's son, Louis the Stammerer. During his life, Baldwin expanded his territory into one of the major principalities of Western Francia. He died in 879 and was buried in the Abbey of St-Bertin, near Saint-Omer.

- Father: Constantius Flavius VALERIUS Emperor of Rome
- Mother: Flavia Maximiana Theodora
- Birth: AFT 289, Mediolanum (Milan), Italy
- Occupation: Patrician and Consul of the Roman Empire, 335, Roma, Roman Empire
- LifeSketch: Julius Constantius (Flavius Julius Constantius) of the Roman Empire Constantius II is suspected of ordering the assassination of his uncle, Julius Constantius Julius Constantius (died September 337) was a politician of the Roman Empire and a member of the Constantinian dynasty, being a son of Emperor Constantius Chlorus and his second wife Flavia Maximiana Theodora, a younger half-brother of Emperor Constantine I and the father of Emperor Julian. Julius Constantius was born after 289, the son of Constantius Chlorus and his wife Theodora,[1] adoptive daughter of emperor Maximian.[2] He had two brothers, Dalmatius and Hannibalianus,[3] and three sisters, Constantia, Anastasia and Eutropia. Emperor Constantine I was his half-brother, as he was the son of Constantius and Helena. Despite this illustrious kinship Julius Constantius was never himself emperor or co-emperor; Constantine, however, gave him the title of Patricius.[4] Julius Constantius was married twice. With his first wife, Galla, sister of the later consuls Vulcacius Rufinus and Neratius Cerealis,[5] he had two sons and a daughter. His eldest son, whose name is not recorded, was murdered in 337 together with his father.[6] His second son Constantius Gallus,[7] was appointed Caesar by his cousin Constantius II. His daughter was the first wife of Constantius II.[8] It has been proposed that Galla and Julius had another daughter, born between 324 and 331 and married to Justus, mother of Justina, whose daughter, wife of Emperor Theodosius I, was called Galla.[9] After the death of his first wife, Julius Constantius married a Greek woman[10][11] Basilina, the daughter of the governor of Egypt Julius Julianus.[12] Basilina gave him another son, the future emperor Julian the Apostate,[13] but died before her husband, in 332/333.[14] Nothing is known about other marriages of Julius Constantius, but since the sources about him are rather poor, other marriages are of course not excluded. Allegedly at the instigation of his stepmother Helena, Julius Constantius did not live initially at the court of his half brother, but together with Dalmatius and Hannibalianus in Tolosa,[15] in Etruria, the birthplace of his son Gallus,[5] and in Corinth.[16] Finally, he was called in Constantinople,[17] and was able to build a good relationship with Constantine.[18] Constantine favoured his half brother appointing him patricius and Consul for the year 335, together with Gaius Caeionius Rufius Albinus.[4] However, in 337, after the death of Constantine, several male members of the Constantinian dynasty were killed, among them Constantius (whose property was confiscated)[19] and his eldest son;[20] his two younger sons however survived, because in 337 they were still children. They would later be elevated to the rank of Caesar and Augustus, respectively.
- Title Of Nobility: Consul of Rome
- Life of Julius Constantius: Julius Constantius was the son of Theodora and her husband Constantius I , and the half-brother of the Emperor Constantine I Like his brother Flavius Dalmatius, he seems to have spent his youth under house arrest in Tolosa, and later in Corinth. He must have been recalled from exile ca. 325 or326 because his first wife Galla, the sister of Vulcacius Rufus and Neratius Cerealis, bore him his son Gallus at Massa Veternensis in Tuscany. She also bore him an son who died in the imperial purges in 337 and a daughter who became the first wife of the Emperor Constantius II in 335 or 336. The names of these two children have been lost from the historical record. He was consul in 335 with Ceionius Rufius Albinus and made a patricius by his half-brother. Galla must have died because he subsequently married Basilina, the daughter of Caeionius Iulianus Camenius. The only offspring of this union was the Emperor Julian. She passed away within several months of his birth. Constantius did not outlive brother Constantine by much because he perished in the imperial purges of 337.

He is also known as Flavius Theodosius or as Theodosius the Elder, distinguishing him from his son, the Roman emperor Theodosius I. He was granted the title of Count of the Britains (Comes Britanniarum) for his work there putting down the Great Conspiracy. He afterwards fought against the Alemanni and in Mauretania. FAMILY There is some evidence that Flavius Theodosius's father was called Flavius Julius Honorius, and his uncles Flavius Julius Gerontius and Flavius Julius Eucherius. He himself was called Flavius Julius Theodosius, claimed descending from the gens Julia through Gaius Julius Caesar's cousin Sextus Julius Caesar. Probably sometime in the late 330s or early 340s he married Flavia Thermantia. By her, he had at least two sons, Honorius and Theodosius (afterwards Emperor Theodosius I), born at Cauca (modern Coca, Segovia) in Spain. The family were Orthodox Christians. - LifeSketch: "Count" Flavius Theodosius (Latin: Theodosius comes; died 376), also known as Theodosius the Elder, was a senior military officer serving Valentinian I (r. 364–375) and the western Roman empire during Late Antiquity. Under his command the Roman army defeated numerous threats, incursions, and usurpations. Theodosius was patriarch of the imperial Theodosian dynasty (r. 379–457) and father of the emperor Theodosius the Great (r. 379–395). He was granted the title of comes rei militaris per Britanniarum (Commander of the Troops of the Diocese of the Britains) by the emperor Valentinian for his work there; putting down the Great Conspiracy (367–368) and the usurpation of Valentinus.[1] After restoring order in Britain he returned to continental Europe and fought against the Alemanni; as Valentinian's magister equitum (Master of Horse) he successfully invaded Alemannic territory (371 or 370).[2] In 372 Theodosius led a successful campaign against the Sarmatians.[3] In the same year Firmus, a Mauritanian prince, rebelled against Roman rule.[3] Theodosius was sent to Africa and in two hard-fought campaigns (373–374) put down the insurrection.[4] In 376, after the death of emperor Valentinian, he was arrested and executed, presumably as he was seen as a threat to the new western emperors Gratian and Valentinian II.[5] Theodosius's Latin title: comes rei militaris, lit. 'companion of soldiers' affairs' is related to Latin: comes, lit. 'companion', from which the medieval European feudal title of count is derived. Military career Theodosius is first mentioned in historical records by Ammianus Marcellinus with reference to his appointment to the command to restore order in Britain.[6] It is clear that prior to his appointment to such an important military command Theodosius must have been a confidant of Valentinian and that his military ability was known and respected, but unfortunately what his career up to that point was is unknown.[7] The Great Conspiracy Main article: Great Conspiracy In 368, Theodosius was raised to the high Roman military rank of comes rei militaris and sent to northern Gaul and Britannia to recover the lands lost to the Great Barbarian Conspiracy in the previous year. Theodosius was given command of part of Valentinian's comitatensis (the Field Army) and early in the year he marched on Bononia (Boulogne-sur-Mer), Rome's harbour on the Channel. Taking advantage of a break in the weather Theodosius crossed the Channel, landing at Rutupiae (Richborough), leaving the bulk of his troops in Bononia to await clearer weather. At Rutupiae Theodosius started gathering intelligence on the situation in Britain; he found out that the troops in Britain had either refused to fight against an enemy superior in numbers, or had been on furlough when the invasion began, furthermore, he found out that the enemy had broken up their forces into small raiding parties which were plundering at will. When his army finally crossed the Channel with the onset of clear, spring, weather, Theodosius had made his plans and was ready to move. The Roman army marched on Londinium (London) and re-established Imperial control of Britain's largest city. Londinium (London) would act as Theodosius' base of operations. He divided his army into detachments and sent them to attack the marauding warbands within reach of the city. The Romans quickly overcame the small enemy raiding parties, killing and/or capturing many marauders, and relieving them of their booty, supplies and prisoners. Theodosius also sent messengers offering pardon to deserters and ordering them to make their way to Londinium.[8] Over the winter of 368–369 large numbers of troops started drift back to their units, these also brought vital intelligence which helped Theodosius plan the next phase of his campaign. In 369 Theodosius campaigned all through Roman Britain, restoring its 'chief towns' and hunting down enemy war parties and traitors. Ammianus Marcellinus records that he put down a rebellion by the Pannonian Valentine. At the end of the campaigning season he sent a message to Valentinian to inform him that the provinces of Britain had been restored to the Empire. He also informed the emperor that he had created a new province which he had named Valentia (probably for Valentinian).[9] Known to have been with him on this expedition were his younger son, the later emperor, Theodosius and the future usurper Magnus Maximus. Magister Equitum Praesentalis On his return from Britain Theodosius succeeded Jovinus as the magister equitum praesentalis at the court of Emperor Valentinian I, in which capacity he prosecuted another successful campaign (370/371) against the Alemanni.[10] In 372 Theodosius was deployed to Illyricum and led an army against the Sarmatians; he appears to have secured a victory in battle and successfully brought the campaign against to an end.[11] In 372 Firmus, a Mauretanian prince, rebelled against Roman rule and plunged the Diocese of Africa into disarray.[12] Valentinian decided to give the command of the expedition to suppress the rebellion to Theodosius. The army was reorganized, extra troops were recruited, Theodosius' son was made dux Moesiae Primae replacing his father as commander in Illyricum and Theodosius himself started mustering his troops at Arles. [13] In the spring of 373 Theodosius sailed to Africa and led a successful campaign against the rebels in the east of Mauritania.[14] At the end of the campaigning season, when he led his army into western Mauritania, he suffered a major setback.[15] In 374 Theodosius invaded western Mauritania again, this time he was more successful, defeating the rebels and capturing Firmus.[16] In 373/374, the younger Theodosius was made dux of the province of Moesia Prima.[17] In 375, when Emperor Valentinian suddenly died, Theodosius was still in Africa. Orders arrived for Theodosius to be arrested; he was taken to Carthage, and put to death in early 376. The reasons for this are not clear, but it is thought to have resulted from a factional power struggle in Italy after the sudden death of Emperor Valentinian in November 375. Shortly before his death Count Theodosius accepted Christian baptism — a common practice at the time, even for lifelong Christians. Family According to Polemius Silvius, Theodosius the Elder's son, Theodosius the Great, was born on 11 January 347 or 346.[17] The epitome de Caesaribus places his birthplace at Cauca (Coca, Segovia) in Hispania.[17] Theodosius had another son named Honorius, a daughter referred to in Aurelius Victor's De caesaribus but whose name is unknown, and a grand-niece, Serena.[17] Legacy At the fall of his father, Theodosius the dux of Moesia Prima retired to his estates in the Iberian Peninsula, where he married Aelia Flaccilla in 376.[17] Their first child, Arcadius, was born around 377.[17] Pulcheria, their daughter, was born in 377 or 378.[17] Theodosius had returned to the Danube frontier by 378, when he was appointed magister equitum. following his successes in the field elevated at Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica) to the rank of augustus by the emperor Gratian (r. 367–383) on 19 January 379.[17] On the accession of his son as augustus, Theodosius the Elder was deified and given the consecratio in Latin: Divus Theodosius Pater, lit. 'the Divine Father Theodosius'. The younger Theodosius, who himself married into the ruling Valentinianic dynasty (r. 364–455) by wedding Galla, the sister of Theodosius's co-augustus Gratian and the daughter of Valentinian the Great and his second wife Justina, went on to establish his as an imperial dynasty, making Count Theodosius the progenitor and patriarch of a line of Roman emperors and empresses.
