=Gilbert DE HAYDON Marriage: 1141
- Birth: 1035, Cotentin Peninsula, Normandy, France
- Life Sketch: "Tyson or Tisson, a baronial name. The Tessons were commonly said to have possessed a third of Normandy. The name of this family was originally Ticio, and it is stated to have been seated in the vicinity of Angouleme (whence its Gothic origins may be inferred), and to have been distinguished in war against the Saracens, c 725 (Des Bois, Art. Achard). The Tessons were afterwards seated in Anjou (Vaultrier, Apud Mem. Soc. Ant. Norm. x 78). Radulphus Taxo, of Angers, in 1028 witnessed a charter regarding the Abbey of Coulombs (Gall. Christ. viii.297. Instr.). Ralph T. led 120 knights of his barony to the aid of Duke William at the Battle of Val des Dunes, 1047, and was created Viscount of the Cotentin. He founded the Abbey of Fontenay, near Caen, and from him descended the powerful family of Tesson in Normandy. Gilbert Tyson or Tesson, his brother, obtained the barony of Alnwick from Edward the Confessor, and fell at the Battle of Hastings. William, his son, had a daughter who married Ivo de Vesci. Gilbert Tyson, another son, held great estates in York, Lincoln and Notts 1086 (Domesd.). Adam Tyson granted lands in Notts to the Hospitallers, t. Rich I (Mon. ii) and to Thurgarten Priory (Ib.93). In the 13th century Warin Fitzgerold held lands late the fee of Ralph Tesun (Testa 77). This family appears also to have been the origin of those of PERCY, MARMION and BYRON." excerpted from The Norman people and their existing descendants in the British dominions and the United States of America (author unknown), Henry S. King & Co, 1874, p. 427. Reprinted online (Google Books and archives.com).
- Fact: Fought at the Battle of Hastings on Anglo Saxon side
- Title (Nobility): Lord of Alnwick
- LifeSketch: CONFLICTING INFORMATION ABOUT GILBERT TYSON--THERE MAY HAVE BEEN TWO OF THEM. Provided by an unknown person without documentation | Gilbet Tyson fought at the Battle of Hastings on the Anglo-Saxon [English] side and died. Contrasted with this undocumented info provided 23 December 2014 by Brent Ruesch | Gilbert Tyson (de Tyson) was William the Conqueror's [French] standard bearer at the Battle of Hastings, and was the first Norman owner of Alnwick. It is probable that the Tysons were deprived of their lands owing to their participation in Mowbrays rebellion against William in 1095, when the next year it was transferred to Eves De Vescy.

- Also known as: Peter Valoignes
- Alt. Birth: 1045, Valognes, Manche, Basse-Normandie, Fraance
- LifeSketch: Peter de Valognes was a Norman noble claimed by late sources to have accompanied William the Conqueror on the invasion of England, fought at the Battle of Hastings, and became great landowner in England. Between 1070 and 1076 Peter de Valognes was granted lands in the six counties of Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Lincolnshire. In 1086 when the Domesday book was completed, Peter was sheriff of the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire and he farmed the boroughs of Havering and Hertford. Although Peter de Valognes made his caput in Benington in Hertfordshire, his most valuable lands were in Norfolk, the latter being a later grant at the forfeiture of Ralph de Guader after the revolt of the Earls in 1075. Peter de Valognes was the founder of Binham Priory in North Norfolk in 1091, which was built on land given to him by William the Conqueror. The land on which the priory stands was, according to the Domesday Book, originally the property of a freeman named Esket. Peter de Valognes married Albreda, the sister of Eudo the Dapifer. They had three children who were Robert de Valognes (born circa 1080), Roger de Valognes (Born circa 1080) and Muriel de Valognes (Born circa 1087)

- Father: Boson ANCIEN D’ ARLES I
- Mother: Engeltrude
- Birth: 830, Bourgogne, Marne, Champagne-Ardenne, France
- Christening: (Ewyas)
- Also known as: Hucbold^ Count Ostrevant
- House: Bosonid
- LifeSketch: Hucbert (820-864) was a Frank and son of Boso the Elder. Therefore, he was a Bosonid. His sister was Teutberga, who married Lothair II, a prince of the Carolingian dynasty, the imperial family of Francia. Hucbert was lay-abbot of the Abbey of Saint Maurice-in-Valais. Lothair's reign was chiefly occupied by his efforts to obtain a divorce from his wife Theutberga, and his relations with his uncles Charles the Bald and Louis the German were influenced by his desire to obtain their support for this endeavor. Lothair, whose desire for the divorce was prompted by his affection for a woman named Waldrada, put away Theutberga, but Hucbert took up arms on her behalf. Hucbert is the father of Theobald of Arles (c. 854-895).

Sir John de Verdun, Lord of Westmeath, (son of Theobald le Botiller, 2nd Chief Butler of Ireland and Rohese de Verdon) and husband of Margaret, daughter of Gilbert de Lacy and coheir of the last-mentioned Walter de Lacy (died 1278) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_High_Constable_of_Ireland ................................................................................. “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “MARGERY DE LACY (or LASCY), elder daughter. She was co-heiress to her brother, Walter de Lacy, sometime in the period, 1238. She was co-heiress in 1241 to her paternal grandfather, Walter de Lacy, Knt., by which she inherited half of Weobley barony, including the castles and half the manors of Weobley and Ewyas Lacy, Herefordshire, the borough of Ludlow, Shropshire, and the manors of Eastleach Turville, Gloucestershire, Stoke upon Tern, Shropshire, Bishampton and Stanford on Teme, Worcestershire, and half of the lordship of palatinate of Meath, together with the hereditary office of Constable of Ireland. She married before 20 April 1242 (as his 1st wife) JOHN DE VERDUN, Knt., of Alton, Staffordshire, Farnham, Buckinghamshire, Bittesby, Lutterworth, and Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire, Brandon (in Wolston), Bretford (in Wolston), and Fleclmoe (in Wolfhamcote), Warwickshire, Wilsford, Wiltshire, etc., and, in right of his 1st wife, hereditary Constable of Ireland, younger son of Thebaud (or Tebaud) le Boteler (or Butler), of Arklow, co. Wicklow, Ireland, by his 2nd wife, Rohese, daughter and heiress of Nicholas de Verdun. He was born about 1226, and took his mother's surname. They had four sons, 1. Nicholas, 2. John, 3. Thebaud (or Tebaud), Knt. [1st Lord Verdun], and 4. Thomas. They granted their share of the Lacy lands in England and Wales to their son Nicholas (John recovered the lands on Nicholas's death in 1271; in 1274 they passed to his younger son, Thebaud de Verdun). His wife, Margery, died in 1256. In May 1248 John was granted protection to go to Ireland, which he visited many times during his life. During the conflict between Simon de Montfort and the Crown, he followed the King. John was on crusade with Lord Edward in Sicily 15 Jan. 1270/1. He established the Franciscan Priory at Dundalk, co. Louth. He married (2nd) before 1267 ELEANOR DE BOHUN [see WILTON 7 for issue of this marriage]. They had 1. one son, Humphrey, clerk, and 2. one daughter, Maud (wife of John de Grey Knt. [2nd Lord Grey of Wilton]). SIR JOHN DE VERDUN died testate shortly before 17 October 1274. In 1275-6 John de Grey and Maud his wife arraigned an assize of novel disseisin his widow, Eleanor, regarding a tenement in Debden, Essex. The same year Robert son of Adam de Neuport arraigned an assize of mort d'ancestor against Eleanor regarding possessions in Sawbridge and Little Fleclmoe, Warwickshire. The same year Peter de Uppingham and Denise his wife arraigned an assize of novel disseisin against Eleanor and others regarding common of pasture in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. In 1278 Ela Longespée, Countess of Warwick, complained that when she sent John the reeve of Claverdon to Brandon Castle (in Wolston), Warwickshire with a letter for 10 marks which Thebaud de Verdun owed her as relief for the manor, Eleanor and her men took away the letter and imprisoned him for one night. In 1278 Eleanor claimed dower out of Grene, co. Limerick. Eleanor was living 10 June 1278. Sometime after this date, members of Eleanor's household petitioned the king, stating that she was mad and an imbecile, and requested a suitable wardship for her.

- LifeSketch: • Background Information: Wife of John de Grey. royalancestry AT msn.com (Douglas Richardson) wrote in message news:<5cf47a19.0201151600.4392e754 AT posting.google.com>... Dear Newsgroup ~ In the wake of the new discovery of Theobald de Verdun's wife, Margery de Bohun, new attention has been turned to the baronial families of Verdun and Bohun. As indicated by Complete Peerage, Theobald de Verdun's step-mother, Eleanor, 2nd wife of John de Verdun, is thought to have been a Bohun, she having sealed with those arms as reported by Complete Peerage sub Verdun. Chris Philips reported his findings on this matter in a post today. As it turns out, Eleanor, 2nd wife of John de Verdun, does in fact appear to have been a Bohun. My research indicates that Eleanor evidently had as her maritagium the manor of Debden, Essex (a Bohun manor), which property she in turn conveyed as a widow in 1275/6 to John de Grey, of Wilton, co. Hereford, and his wife, Maud. The fine conveying this property is found in Essex Feet of Fines, vol. 2, pg. 13. At his death years later, John de Grey is stated to have held the manor of Debden of Eleanor de Verdun by the service of a rose, the standard service for property granted in marriage in this period (see Cal. IPM, vol. 6, pg. 311). As such, it seems rather clear that John de Grey's wife, Maud, was the daughter of John de Verdun, by his 2nd wife, Eleanor de Bohun. We can be reasonably certain that Maud de Grey was Eleanor de Verdun's daughter, as Eleanor being a Bohun surely had the manor of Debden in marriage, and in turn passed it along to her daughter, Maud. In this time period, a woman's maritagium almost always fell to her descendants, unless she happened to be childless, when she sometimes conveyed it away to strangers. In Eleanor's case, we know that she had several other male children, so the odds that she would convey her maritagium to the Grey family without there being a kinship is virtually slim to none. Also, it appears that John de Grey and his wife, Maud, were small children at the time of Eleanor de Verdun's fine. Complete Peerage indicates that John de Grey was born about 1268 (he being aged 40 at his father's death in 1308). Eleanor de Verdun's other known child, Humphrey, was born in 1267. It would be odd for Eleanor to convey her property to children, unless of course one of the parties was her own child. Following John de Grey's death, the manor of Debden, Essex was in turn held by John and Maud de Grey's son and heir, Henry de Grey, Lord Grey, of Wilton (see Cal. IPM, vol. 8, pg. 261), as well as by a later Henry Grey, Lord Grey, of Wilton (see Cal. IPM, vol. 17, pg. 253). At the later Henry de Grey's death, he is stated to hold the manor of "Weldebernys" in Debden of the Countess of Hereford (a Bohun descendant). The passage of this manor down to John de Grey's son, Henry, and thence to his heirs gives evidence that Henry was in fact the son of John de Grey's wife, Maud de Verdun. These new discoveries causes a ripple of corrections for Complete Peerage as well as for the Plantagenet Ancestry manuscript. For starters, it now appears that John de Grey had but one wife, Maud de Verdun, not two as claimed by Complete Peerage. Also, it appears Maud de Verdun was the mother of all of John de Grey's children, presumably including Iseult Saint Pierre, living 1343, whose existence and identity I mentioned in a post this past week. As for the identity of parentage of Eleanor de Bohun, Complete Peerage indicates that she married before 1267 to John de Verdun, and that they had a son, Humphrey de Verdun, born in 1267. If we assume that Eleanor was around 20 at the time of marriage, say 1265, the chronology would place Eleanor, born say 1245, as a hitherto unknown daughter of Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford (died 1275), by his 2nd wife, Maud de Avenbury. The date of the marriage of Earl Humphrey and Maud de Avenbury is not known, but presumably it was soon after the death of his 1st wife, Maud of Eu, which took place in 1241. Earl Humphrey and Maud are known to have had children, but no modern descendants have been found for this couple. Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah E-mail: royalancestry AT msn.com http://cybergata.com/roots/8818.htm

Biography Very little is known about the early life of Roesia de Verdun before her marriage. de Verdun was the daughter of Nicholas de Verdon of Alton, Staffordshire and Clementia, daughter and heir of Philip le Boteler, through whom Clementia brought the estates of Stoke Farthing and Wilsford to the de Verduns. She was also the widow of William Perceval de Somery. The agreement to marry occurred on 4 September 1225. She was the second wife of Theobald le Botiller. As his second wife her five children were not heirs to his lands but they were eligible to be heirs to hers so she and they retained her family name. When her husband died at Poitou in 1230 during the English invasion of France, de Verdun claimed her inheritances and paid the taxes to be allowed remain unmarried. She applied to be a femme sole and retain her independence. The king authorised Maurice FitzGerald to grant to her her lands in April 1233. She built Castleroche, seven miles northwest of Dundalk, in 1236 to defend her lands. She gained a strong and powerful reputation. However she was also very pious. de Verdun founded the Augustinian priory of Grace Dieu Priory in Leicestershire in 1239. As time went on however the pressure to marry again increased until de Verdun decided to become a nun by 1242 she was a member of the community at Grace Dieu. Her son inherited fully in 1247 when she died. Though originally buried at the priory, in the aftermath of the dissolution of the monasteries, the villagers of Belton reburied her in their village. Stories After the building of her castle on the edge of the Irish frontier de Verdun garnered a violent reputation. de Verdun was said to have been a ferocious fighter and wore body armour. Stories were told of her riding into battle against her enemies, the O'Hanlons. There were also fictionary tales around the building of the castle. She was said to have ordered the master mason thrown from one of the castle windows to prevent his working for anyone else, causing it to be known as the ‘murder window’. de Verdun is one of the women of 'Through Her Eyes' by Clodagh Finn.
