- LifeSketch: Wikiwand - Itta of Metz, O.S.B. (also Ida, Itte or Iduberga; 592–8 May 652) was the wife of Pepin of Landen, Mayor of the Palace of the Kingdom of Austrasia. After his death, she founded the Abbey of Nivelles, where she became a Colombanian nun along with her daughter, Gertrude of Nivelles. Both are honored as saints by the Catholic Church. Life There is no direct record of her parents, but it has been suggested that she came from a family of senatorial status which had originated in Aquitaine,[1] and was a daughter of Arnoald, Bishop of Metz, son of Ansbertus. Her brother was Saint Modoald, Bishop of Trier, and her sister was the abbess, Saint Severa. She married Pepin of Landen, Mayor of the Merovingian Royal Palace.[2] After Pepin's death in 640, Itta and her daughter, Gertrude, withdrew from the capital for a life of religious reflection.[1] Later, around 647, on the advice of Amandus, the Bishop of Maastricht, she founded the Abbey of Nivelles. The abbey was originally just a community of nuns, but it later became a double monastery when the nuns were joined by a group of Irish monks who offered them support in the operations of the abbey. She might have appointed her daughter, Gertrude, as its first abbess, while she herself lived there as a simple nun, assisting the young abbess by her advice.[3] Itta died at the abbey on 8 May 652.[3] Children Itta had another daughter by Pepin, Abbess Begga of Andenne, who had married Ansegisel, son of Arnulf of Metz prior to joining the monastery.[1] By Begga, she is the grandmother of Pepin of Herstal and one of the matriarchs of the great Carolingian family. Her sons were Grimoald, later Mayor of the Palace, and father of King Childebert the Adopted; Itta's second son Bavo (or Allowin), became a hermit and was later canonized. Both her daughters were also canonized, as was she. Her feast day is celebrated on 8 May.[3] Patronage Itta is honored as the patron saint of the French village of Itteville, which was founded on the site of a farm which she had established.

- Also known as: Lady Adeliza de Normandie
- betrothed to Harold II, Earl of Wessex, King of England: Thought to have been formally betrothed to Harold II King of England before he was killed at the Battle of Hastings. She became a nun, possibly at St Léger de Préaux.
- LifeSketch: Adeliza Born c 1056 Died: c. 1113 Father: William the Conqueror Mother: Matilda of Flanders Adeliza or Adelida (died before 1113) was a daughter of William the Conqueror and his wife, Matilda of Flanders. There is considerable uncertainty about her life, including her dates of birth and death. In a mortuary roll prepared at her sister's religious house, she was listed first among the daughters of William the Conqueror. She was usually the first daughter in lists of William's children, and thus probably the eldest. Her inclusion in the mortuary roll indicates that her death preceded the date of its 1113 compilation. Biography: In the additions Orderic Vitalis made to the Gesta Normannorum Ducum (Deeds of the Norman Dukes), he states that prior to his death at the Battle of Hastings, Harold Godwinson was betrothed to "Adelidis", a daughter of William, and that she remained single after his death. Calling her "Adelida", Robert of Torigni follows Orderic in showing her as the affianced of Harold. However, in the later books of his Historia Ecclesiastica, Orderic instead states that Adeliza was "a virgin under the protection of Roger de Beaumont" which, in the view of historian Elisabeth van Houts, probably means that she was a nun of St Léger at Préaux. Orderic makes a previously unknown sister Agatha the fiancée of Harold, and also of Alfonso VI of León and Castile. She was almost certainly the Adeliza addressed by Archbishop Anselm of Canterbury in prayers and meditations as a "venerable lady of royal nobility."

- LifeSketch: English Royalty. Born the daughter of William I "the Conqueror" King of England and Matilda de Flandre in Normandy, France, the ninth of ten children. She married Alfonso VI of Galicia, about 1074 at the Abbey of the Holy Trinity, Caen, France when she was about nine years old. She died at about age 16, allegedly on her journey to Spain to join her husband for the first time, and was buried at Bayeaux Cathedral, Bayeaux, France. Her name has also been recorded as Elgiva de Normandie. According to Bishop Pelagius of Oviedo, contemporary of the king, in his Chronicon regum Legionensium ("Chronicle of the Kings of León"), Alfonso VI had five wives and two concubines nobilissimas (very noble). The wives were, according to the bishop, Agnes, Constance, Berta, Isabel, and Beatrice and the concubines Jimena Muñoz and Zaida. Some chroniclers from north of the Pyrenees report an earlier espousal, to a daughter of William the Conqueror, King of England and Duke of Normandy named Agatha. Agatha (?) of Normandy: Several northern sources report that Alfonso was affianced to Agatha, the daughter of William the Conqueror, King of England and Duke of Normandy, an arrangement negotiated in 1067. She is said to have been sent to Iberia, but to have died before the marriage could take place. There is scholarly dispute over whether Alfonso was the Iberian king involved, and if so, whether the daughter of William involved was Agatha or a different daughter, Adelaide.

- LifeSketch: “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “JUDITH OF BRITTANY, married before 1008 (as his 1st wife) RICHARD II, Duke of Normandy, 996-1026, son and heir of Richard I, Count (or Prince) of the Normans, by his 2nd wife, Gunnor. They had three sons, Richard (III) [Duke of Normandy], Robert (I) Duke of Normandy], and Guillaume (monk at Fécamp), and three daughters, Adélaïde (wife of Renaud, Count of Burgundy), ___ (wife of Baldwin IV, Count of Flanders), and Mathilde. His wife, Judith, died 28 June 1017, and was buried in Bernal Abbey. He married (2nd) probably soon after 1017 PAPIA ___. They had two sons, Mauger [Archbishop of Rouen] and Guillaume [Count of Argues]. RICHARD II, Duke of Normandy, died at Fécamp 23 August 1026. Children of Judith of Brittany, by Duke Richard II: i. RICHARD III, Duke of Normandy, 1026-1027, son and heir. By an unknown mistress, he had one illegitimate son, Nicholas [Abbot of Saint-Ouen], and ii. one illegitimate daughter, ___ (wife of Ranulph, Vicomte of Bessin). RICHARD III, Duke of Normandy, died 5 (or 6) August 1027. NOTE: if Judith died in 1017, she wasn't the mother of Alice/Adelize who was born in 1021. "At the beginning of Duke William's reign the vicomte of the Bessin was Rannulf, who was the son of a vicomte named Anschitil. He married a daughter of Duke Richard III and was among the defeated rebels at Val-es-Dunes. None the less, the office continued in the family, for he was succeeded by another Rannulf (II) who was established at Avranches before the Norman conquest, and who survived until after April 1089. Moreover, this second Rannulf married Maud, daughter of Richard, vicomte of the Avranchin, thus linking together two powerful vice-comital dynasties which were later in turn to determine the succession of the earldom of Chester.". iii. - LifeSketch: Emma of Normandy, Queen of England, Denmark and Norway described as "the most distinguished woman of her time for delightful beauty and wisdom" Born about 984* – died 6 March 1052; daughter of Richard the Fearless and his wife 2nd wife Gunnor. * Emma's exact date of birth is not known, however, she is recorded to be either 12 or 17 years old when she married King Æthelred in 1002, this would place her birth in 984 or 985 or 990. In 1002 the seventeen-year-old Emma, sister of the Duke of Normandy, sailed to England to be the queen of indolent king Æthelred whose grudging interest in her was purely political. The country in which she landed was chaotic and full of civil unrest, with a rowdy court rife with plots and murders. But the political career on which she embarked was one of the most extraordinary of any English queen. Before it was over she married two kings and gave birth to two more. Her second marriage to Cnut was scarcely happier. Her new husband remained joined in a "handfast" union (not blessed by the Church) to Elgiva, his first love and the mother of several of his children. Emma lived for many years in a house with the wife and family the king refused to give up, all of whom resented her presence. Emma, though, was a powerful political figure in her own right. A generous giver whose name appears prominently on a number of charters granting land she may also have been a Danish nationalist who wished to see England joined not with Normandy but with Viking Denmark. Standing at the meeting point of the three cultures of the early Middle Ages--Saxon, Viking, and Norman--Emma and her queenship provide a captivating picture of a still-misperceived age. Married King Æthelred the Unready (1002–1014) and became Queen of England, taking on the the Anglo-Saxon name of Ælfgifu, which she used for formal and official matters. together they had: Edward the Confessor, King of England (1003–1066) Goda, Countess of Boulogne (1004–c. 1047) Alfred Ætheling (1005–1036) Queen of England Tenure 1002 – summer 1013 3 February 1014 – 23 April 1016 July 1017 – 12 November 1035 Married Cnut the Great (1017–1035) At this time Emma became Queen of England, and later of Denmark, and Norway. - ASSASSINATED: William Longsword was assassinated on the orders of Arnulf I, Count of Flanders, while at a peace conference., 17 DEC 942, Picquigny, Somme, Picardie, France
- LifeSketch: William Longsword, also known as William I of Normandy and Guillaume Longue-Épée, was born about 893, the son of the Viking Rollo and his Christian wife Poppa of Bayeux, a member of the Frankish aristocracy. His father was pagan at the time of William's birth and was baptized a Christian in 912, by Franco, Archbishop of Rouen. It is likely that William was baptized then as well. William succeeded his father Rollo as ruler of Normandy in 927. Known now as 'Duke of Normandy', during his lifetime that title was not in use, he was Jarl and Count of Rouen. In 933 he was besieged in Rouen by Riouf of Evreux and other Normans who believed he had become too 'French'. William put down the rebellion with a decisive victory, firmly establishing his authority over Normandy. While besieged he sent his pregnant concubine Sprota to safety in Bayeux, and there she gave birth to a son they named Richard. Between 935 and 940 William married Luitgarde of Vermandois, daughter of Herbert II Count of Vermandois. They did not have any children. William was ambushed and assassinated on 17 December 942 at Picquigny, while at a peace conference. His son Richard, though only 10 years old, succeeded him as the next ruler of Normandy. And a Danish text: Vilhelm I "Langsværd", af Normandiet (død 17. december 942) var jarl af Normandiet.

- LifeSketch: William Longsword was the son of Rollo, founder of the Rollonid dynasty that would become dukes of Normandy and after 1066, kings of England. In William's day, however, the Rollonid principality was still a fragile entity centered around Rouen and, in terms of Realpolitik, not extending far west of the Seine. Most of William's career was spent in relative obscurity, but in the late 930s he suddenly emerged onto the stage of Frankish royal politics, first because of his war with Arnulf of Flanders, and then because of his support for King Louis IV (d'Outremer) at a time when Louis' star seemed to be fading. In December 942, at the peak of his good relations with Louis, Arnulf called for a peace conference with William; there, William was murdered (traditionally, Arnulf is said to have arranged the murder). 5shellymk3@gmail.com Shelly shared-All the biographies that I have found on William state that he was born in either Rouen, Normandy, or Bayeux, Normandy, and that he was killed by followers of Arnulf of Flanders I, Dec. 17, 942, after leaving a "peace treaty" meeting with Arnulf on the Island of Picquiny (an island in the Somme River) in Picardy, Normandy. -- Find a Grave: William "Longsword" of Normandy I ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ William Longsword, also known as William I of Normandy and Guillaume Longue-Épée, was born about 893, the son of the Viking Rollo and his Christian wife Poppa of Bayeux, a member of the Frankish aristocracy. His father was pagan at the time of William's birth and was baptized a Christian in 912, by Franco, Archbishop of Rouen. It is likely that William was baptized then as well. William succeeded his father Rollo as ruler of Normandy in 927. Known now as "Duke of Normandy," during his lifetime that title was not in use, he was Jarl and Count of Rouen. In 933 he was besieged in Rouen by Riouf of Evreux and other Normans who believed he had become too "French." William put down the rebellion with a decisive victory, firmly establishing his authority over Normandy. And a Danish text: Vilhelm I "Langsværd," af Normandiet (død 17. december 942) var jarl af Normandiet.

- LifeSketch: Maliger or Mauger, the third son of Richard the Fearless, third Duke of Normandy, and direct ancestor of the Granville family, obtained the Earldom of Corbeil by his first marriage in the year 1012, with Germaine de Corbeil, the daughter and heiress of Aubert, second Earl of Corbeil and grand-daughter of Hamon the first Earl, the son of Osmund de Centeville, to whom had been committed the tutorship of Duke Richard during his minority. The title remained for generations in the family, and was revived in the reign of Charles the Second, when Sir John Granville, eldest son of Sir Bevil Granville, on being created Earl of Bath was permitted to assume the additional title Earl of Corbeil. “According to Palgrave, Mauger acquired considerable importance in French affairs, having greatly distinguished himself by his policy and valour. He took a prominent part in defending Henry, the eldest son of King Robert of France, against his mother Queen Constance, who notwithstanding that he had been crowned in his father’s lifetime, was desirous of placing her second son Robert on the throne in his stead. As a reward for his services Mauger was invested with the extensive county of Mortaigne as an addition to his patrimonial domains. Mortaigne, however, remained but a short time in the family, for his eldest son William, nicknamed the Warling, having been detected plotting against young Duke William, (afterwards known as “the Conqueror,”) during his minority, was exiled to Apulia, and Mortaigne was dealt with as an escheat, and conferred upon the Duke’s half-brother, Robert de Centeville.” [1] Sources https://archive.org/stream/historyofgranvil00gran#page/n7/mode/2up ↑ Roger Granville, The History of the Granville Family (1895), p. 15.

- LifeSketch: Additional information on Richard 1st. Medieval Lands presents narrative biographical genealogies of the major noble families that ruled Europe, North Africa and Western Asia between the 5th and 15th centuries. The approach is to verify information against primary source material, quoting relevant extracts in the original language. This has enabled many traditionally accepted relationships to be challenged. The territorial emphasis and wide scope allow innovative conclusions to be drawn about the comparative development of the nobility in different geographical areas. Richard's first marriage in 960 was to Emma, daughter of Hugh the Great, and Hedwige of Saxony. They were betrothed when both were very young. She died after 19 March 968, with no issue. According to Robert of Torigni, not long after Emma's death, Duke Richard went out hunting and stopped at the house of a local forester. He became enamored with the forester's wife, Seinfreda, but she was a virtuous woman and suggested he court her unmarried sister, Gunnor, instead. Gunnor became his mistress and her family rose to prominence. Her brother, Herfast de Crepon, may have been involved in a controversial heresy trial. Gunnor was, like Richard, of Viking descent, being part Danish by blood. Richard finally married her to legitimize their children: • Richard II "the Good", Duke of Normandy • Robert, Archbishop of Rouen, Count of Evreux • Mauger, Count of Corbeil • Robert Danus, died between 985 and 989 • another son • Emma of Normandy, wife of two kings of England • Maud of Normandy, wife of Odo II of Blois, Count of Blois, Champagne and Chartres • Hawise of Normandy m. Geoffrey I, Duke of Brittany Richard was known to have had several other mistresses and had children with many of them. Known children are: • Geoffrey, Count of Eu • William, Count of Eu (ca. 972-26 January 1057/58), m. Lasceline de Turqueville (d. 26 January 1057/58). • Beatrice of Normandy, Abbess of Montivilliers d.1034 m. Ebles of Turenne[1] (d.1030 (divorced) References: • Wikipedia. (2021). - ALTHOUGH NOW NAMED AS 'DUKE' HE WAS ACTUALLY COUNT OF ROUEN: The Counts of Rouen were never granted the title of 'Duke of Normandy' by a French King as was the usual path to a title but named themselves "prince and duke, count of Normandy" beginning with Richard II in 1006. Originally they were Jarls then Counts. Normandy was not actually a Duchy until 1204, when Normandy was seized by the crown and lost its autonomy and its native rulers.

- LifeSketch: Richard III was the eldest son of Richard II of Normandy. Around 1020, Richard was sent by his father in command of a large army to rescue his brother-in-law, Reginald, later Count of Burgundy, by attacking bishop and count Hugh of Chalon, who had captured and imprisoned Reginald. When Richard II died in August 1026, his eldest son, Richard III became Duke of Normandy. Shortly after his reign began his brother Robert, discontented with his province of Hiemois on the border of Normandy, revolted against his brother. He laid siege to the town of Falaise, but was soon brought to heel by Richard who captured him, then released him on his oath of fealty. No sooner had Richard disbanded his army and returned to Rouen, when he died suddenly (some say suspiciously). The duchy passed to his younger brother Robert I. In January 1027 he was married to Adela, of a noble lineage. She is usually identified with Adela, a younger daughter of King Robert II of France, who married to Baldwin V, Count of Flanders after Richard's 6 August 1027 death Richard's marriage to Adela was childless. By an unknown woman, he had two children: Alice, who married Ranulph, Viscount of Bayeux Nicholas, monk at Fecamp, Abbot of Saint-Ouen, Rouen (died 26 Feb 1092)

- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Sometimes called Robert II, succeeded his father, William the Conqueror as Duke of Normandy in 1087 and reigned until 1106. Robert was also an unsuccessful claimant to the throne of the Kingdom of England. The epithet "Curthose" had its origins in the Norman French word courtheuse "short stockings" and was apparently derived from a nickname given to Robert by his father; the chroniclers William of Malmesbury and Orderic Vitalis reported that William the Conqueror had derisively called Robert brevis-ocrea ("short boot"). The eldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert's reign as duke is noted for the discord with his brothers William II and Henry I in England. Robert mortgaged his duchy to finance his participation in the First Crusade, where he was an important crusader commander. Eventually, his disagreements with Henry I led to his death in captivity and the absorption of Normandy as a possession of England. Robert was the eldest son of William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England, and Matilda of Flanders.[1] Estimates of Robert's birth-date range between 1051 and 1053.[2] As a child he was betrothed to Margaret, the heiress of Maine, but she died before they could be wed,[3] and Robert did not marry until his late forties. In his youth he was reported to be courageous and skilful in military exercises. He was, however, also prone to laziness and weakness of character that discontented nobles and the King of France exploited to stir discord with his father William. He was unsatisfied with the share of power allotted to him and quarrelled with his father and brothers fiercely. In 1063, his father made him the Count of Maine in view of his engagement to Margaret, and Robert may have had independent rule in Maine.[4] The county remained under Norman control until 1069 when the county revolted and reverted to Hugh V of Maine.[5] In 1077, Robert instigated his first insurrection against his father as the result of a prank played by his younger brothers William Rufus and Henry, who had dumped a full chamber-pot over his head. Robert was enraged and, urged on by his companions, started a brawl with his brothers that was only interrupted by the intercession of their father. Feeling that his dignity was wounded, Robert was further angered when King William failed to punish his brothers. The next day Robert and his followers attempted to seize the castle of Rouen. The siege failed, but, when King William ordered their arrest, Robert and his companions took refuge with Hugh of Chateauneuf-en-Thymerais.[6] They were forced to flee again when King William attacked their base at Rémalard.[6] Exile Robert fled to Flanders to the court of his uncle Robert I, Count of Flanders, before plundering the county of the Vexin and causing such mayhem that his father King William allied himself with King Philip I of France to stop his rebellious son. Relations were not helped when King William discovered that his wife, Robert's mother Queen Matilda, was secretly sending her son Robert money. At a battle in January 1079, Robert unhorsed King William in combat and succeeded in wounding him, stopping his attack only when he recognised his father's voice. Humiliated, King William cursed his son. King William then raised the siege and returned to Rouen. At Easter 1080, father and son were reunited by the efforts of Queen Matilda, and a truce lasted until she died in 1083. Robert seems to have left court soon after the death of his mother and spent several years travelling throughout France, Germany and Flanders. He visited Italy seeking the hand of the great heiress Matilda of Tuscany (b. 1046) but was unsuccessful. During this period as a wandering knight Robert sired several illegitimate children. His bastard son Richard seems to have spent much of his life at the royal court of his uncle William Rufus. This Richard was killed in a hunting accident in the New Forest in 1099 as was his uncle, King William Rufus, the next year. An illegitimate daughter was later married to Helias of Saint-Saens. Reign as Duke of Normandy In 1087, the elder William died of wounds suffered from a riding accident during a siege of Mantes. At his death he reportedly wanted to disinherit his eldest son but was persuaded to divide the Norman dominions between his two eldest sons. To Robert he granted the Duchy of Normandy and to William Rufus he granted the Kingdom of England. The youngest son Henry was given money to buy land. Of the two elder sons Robert was considered to be much the weaker and was generally preferred by the nobles who held lands on both sides of the English Channel since they could more easily circumvent his authority. At the time of their father's death the two brothers made an agreement to be each other's heir. However this peace lasted less than a year when barons joined with Robert to displace Rufus in the Rebellion of 1088. It was not a success, in part because Robert never showed up to support the English rebels. Robert took as his close adviser Ranulf Flambard, who had been previously a close adviser to his father. Flambard later became an astute but much-disliked financial adviser to William Rufus until the latter's death in 1100. In 1096, Robert formed an army and left for the Holy Land on the First Crusade. At the time of his departure he was reportedly so poor that he often had to stay in bed for lack of clothes. To raise money for the crusade he mortgaged his duchy to his brother William for the sum of 10,000 marks. When William II died on 2 August 1100, Robert was on his return journey from the Crusade and was about to marry a wealthy young bride to raise funds to buy back his duchy. As a result of Robert's absence, his brother Henry was able to seize the crown of England for himself. Upon his return, Robert – urged by Flambard and several Anglo-Norman barons – claimed the English crown, on the basis of the short-lived agreement of 1087, and in 1101 led an invasion to oust his brother Henry. He landed at Portsmouth with his army, but the lack of popular support among the English (Anselm, the archbishop of Canterbury, was decidedly against him and the Charter of Liberties issued at Henry's coronation was well liked) as well as Robert's own mishandling of the invasion tactics enabled Henry to resist the invasion. Robert was forced by diplomacy to renounce his claim to the English throne in the Treaty of Alton. It is said that Robert was a brilliant field commander but a terrible strategist in the First Crusade. Imprisonment and death The tower in Cardiff Castle where Robert Curthose was confined for the final 8 years of his life. In 1105, however, Robert's continual stirring of discord with his brother in England as well as civil disorder in Normandy itself prompted Henry to invade Normandy. Orderic reports on an incident at Easter 1105 when Robert was supposed to hear a sermon by the venerable Serlo, Bishop of Sées. Robert spent the night before sporting with harlots and jesters, and while he lay in bed sleeping off his drunkenness his unworthy friends stole his clothes. He awoke to find himself naked and had to remain in bed and missed the sermon. In 1106, Henry defeated Robert's army decisively at the Battle of Tinchebray and claimed Normandy as a possession of the English crown, a situation that endured for almost a century. Captured after the battle, Robert was imprisoned in Devizes Castle for twenty years before being moved to Cardiff. In 1134, Robert died in Cardiff Castle in his early eighties. Robert Curthose, sometime Duke of Normandy, eldest son of the Conqueror, was buried in the abbey church of St. Peter in Gloucester. The exact place of his burial is difficult to establish – legend states that he requested to be buried before the High Altar. His effigy carved in bog oak, however, lies on a mortuary chest decorated with the attributed arms of the Nine Worthies (missing one – Joshua, and replaced with the arms of Edward the Confessor). The effigy dates from about 100 years after his death and the mortuary chest much later. The church subsequently has become Gloucester Cathedral.

Robert II DE NORMANDIE Duc de Normandie

- Also known as: Ganger-Hrólfr (Old Norse)
- Also known as: Robert, baptismal name
- Also known as: Robert, baptismal name

- Ruling House: Normandy (founder): (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Parents of Rollo (not Duc, not King ) [Sure, he has parents but WE DO NOT know who they were at this time. The first information tells us he is from Denmark and has Danish parents. Later we have a source that he is from Norway and had Norwegian parents. Most is speaking for Denmark. His army consisted mostly of Danes. Some of his descendants are called 'Danes' but never Norwegians.] Theoretically Danish - Swedish - Norwegan people carry the same DNA and have had tribal migration patters over thousands of years. ______________________________________________ Rollo of Normandy (circa 860 - circa 932) was a Viking, who became ruler of Normandy was born in (Scandinavia) and died circa 932 in France of unspecified causes. He married Poppa de Bayeux (c 870-c 910) . Contents: Rollo of Normandy was the founder and first ruler of the Viking principality in what soon became known as Normandy in modern-day western France. Disputed origins: The question of Rollo's Danish or Norwegian origins was a matter of heated dispute between Norwegian and Danish historians of the 19th and early 20th century, particularly in the run-up to Normandy's 1000-year-anniversary in 1911. Today, historians still disagree on this question, but most would now agree that a certain conclusion can never be reached. Danish theory Dudo of St. Quentin, in his De moribus et actis primorum Normannorum ducum (Latin), tells of a powerful Danish nobleman at loggerheads with the king of Denmark, who then died and left his two sons, Gurim and Rollo, leaving Rollo to be expelled and Gurim killed. William of Jumièges also mentions Rollo's prehistory in his Gesta Normannorum Ducum however he states that he was from the Danish town of Fakse. Wace, writing some 300 years after the event in his Roman de Rou, also mentions the two brothers (as Rou and Garin), as does the Orkneyinga Saga. Norwegian theory Norwegian and Icelandic historians identified this Rollo with a son of Rognvald Eysteinsson, Earl of Møre, in Western Norway, based on medieval Norwegian and Icelandic sagas that mention a Ganger Hrolf (Hrolf, the Walker). The oldest source of this version is the Latin Historia Norvegiae, written in Norway at the end of the 12th century. This Hrolf fell foul of the Norwegian king Harald Fairhair, and became a Jarl in Normandy. The nickname of that character came from being so big that no horse could carry him. Names and major achievements: Also known as Hrolf the Ganger or Rollon, 1st Duke of Normandy, from 911 to 927, called also Rolf the Walker, because, being so tall, he preferred to go afoot rather than ride the little horses. Also shown as Rollon, Row, or Robert. Originally a Norse Viking, he was noted for strength and martial prowess. In the reign of Charles II the Bald, he sailed up the Seine River and took Rouen, which he kept as a base of operations. He gained a number of victories over the Franks, and extorted the cession of the province since called Normandy. By the famous treaty which Charles the Bald and Rollo signed the latter agreed to adopt Christianity. Biography details: 885 Siege of Paris In 885, Rollo was one of the lesser leaders of the Viking fleet which besieged Paris under Sigfred. Legend has it that an emissary was sent by the king to find the chieftain and negotiate terms. When he asked for this information, the Vikings replied that they were all chieftains in their own right. In 886, when Sigfred retreated in return for tribute, Rollo stayed behind and was eventually bought off and sent to harry Burgundy. 911 Invasion of Western France Later, he returned to the Seine with his followers (known as Danes, or Norsemen). He invaded the area of northern France now known as Normandy. In 911 Rollo's forces were defeated at the Battle of Chartres by the troops of King Charles the Simple.[1] In the aftermath of the battle, rather than pay Rollo to leave, as was customary, Charles the Simple understood that he could no longer hold back their onslaught, and decided to give Rollo the coastal lands they occupied under the condition that he defend against other raiding Vikings. In the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte (911) with King Charles, Rollo pledged feudal allegiance to the king, changed his name to the Frankish version, and converted to Christianity, probably with the baptismal name Robert.[2] In return, King Charles granted Rollo the lower Seine area (today's upper Normandy) and the titular rulership of Normandy, centred around the city of Rouen. There exists some argument among historians as to whether Rollo was a "duke" (dux) or whether his position was equivalent to that of a "count" under Charlemagne. According to legend, when required to kiss the foot of King Charles, as a condition of the treaty, he refused to perform so great a humiliation, and when Charles extended his foot to Rollo, Rollo ordered one of his warriors to do so in his place. His warrior then lifted Charles' foot up to his mouth causing him to fall to the ground. Settlement of Normandy: Initially, Rollo stayed true to his word of defending the shores of the Seine river in accordance to the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte, but in time he and his followers had very different ideas. Rollo began to divide the land between the Epte and Risle rivers among his chieftains and settled there with a de facto capital in Rouen. With these settlements, Rollo began to further raid other Frankish lands, now from the security of a settled homeland, rather than a mobile fleet. Eventually, however, Rollo's men intermarried with the local women, and became more settled as Frenchmen. At the time of his death, Rollo's expansion of his territory had extended as far west as the Vire River. Death of Rollo: Sometime around 927, Rollo passed the fief in Normandy to his son, William Longsword. Rollo may have lived for a few years after that, but certainly died before 933. According to the historian Adhemar, 'As Rollo's death drew near, he went mad and had a hundred Christian prisoners beheaded in front of him in honour of the gods whom he had worshipped, and in the end distributed a hundred pounds of gold around the churches in honour of the true God in whose name he had accepted baptism.' Even though Rollo had converted to Christianity, some of his pagan roots surfaced at the end. Residence at Falaise: In Falaise, France, is a series of statues that pays tribute to the six Norman Dukes from Rollo to William the Conqueror. The castle here was the principal residence of the Norman Knights. [Although Granger, or Grange in Old Norse, which means 'the Walker', is often mistakenly believed to be the name of Rollo Ragnvaldsson; it was actually a nickname given to him because he was such a large man that no horse could bear him and he was mostly forced to walk. Rolf is a contraction of Hrodwulf (Rudolf) which is a conjunction of the stem words hrod (renown) + wulf (wolf), and is written in Old Norse as Hrólfr - which was another nickname of Rollo.] An attempt was made in 2011 to extract DNA from the graves of his grandson and great-grandson, but failed - it was only shown that the bones in the grave were far older than the grandson, so it couldn't be the right bones.(Various Sources.)

- A knight's fee and a half only was held in 1212 by Gilbert de Notton in right of his wife, Edith: (Date and Place unknown)
- Death: BEF 16 OCT 1220, Lancaster, Lancashire, England
- Alt. Death: 1222, Lancashire, England
- LifeSketch: «b»Biography«/b» "The earliest mention of Gilbert occurs in the Sheriff's account of Lancashire at Michaelmas 1185, when the Sheriff rendered account at the Treasury of one mark from Gilbert de Noton and Richard de Heland (Eland) for license to make an agreement touching some suit which they had been litigating in the King's Court. He was Seneschal to John de Lacy, Constable of Chester sometime between 1213 and 1220. By his first wife, who died before 1203, he appears to have had issue at least two sons, viz., Gilbert and William. By his second wife, Edith, lady of Barton in her own right, daughter of Matthew de Barton, whom he married shortly before 1203, he had no issue. "He was a knight and held land in Yorkshire under the honor of Pontefract and in Lancashire under the Montbegons. "According to the Survey of co. Lancaster made in 1212, Gilbert de Notton held one carucate of land [in Crompton] in thanage, of Roger de Montbegon and William de Neville jointly, by the service of 6s. 4d. yearly. He also held the nearby estate of Chadderton. He held these by the feoffment of Adam fitz Swain to his ancestor. He also, in 1212, held Failsworth of Adam de Prestwich, in thanage tenure, by the yearly service of 4s. Robert de Byron of Clayton held his land here under the said Gilbert. He also is shown as holding, "with the lady of Barton", the fee of one knight and a half of the same of Robert Gredle in Wythinton of ancient time. "Grant in frankalmoign from Gilbert de Notton [to the canons of Cockersand], of a portion of his land in Crompton within these bounds, where the brook runs between Bachebrook-hurst and the land of Robert, the Clerk, unto Bachebrook, following the same unto Beal [water], following Beal [water] unto the Hay of Robert, the Clerk, following the same unto Hilly-leach (or Hulhill-shaw), going round the same unto the black leach, following that leach unto the little syke, following that syke by going around the little "land" unto the said brook between Bachebrook-hurst and the land of [the said Robert]; with common right, and easements of his fee of that town, and in the common pasture as much right as belonged to such a tenement. Further be confirmed to them by this charter all grants made to them within his fee. "Gilbert de Notton or Newton, who, in a subsequent part of the Testa de Nevill, is said to hold in Barton, with the lady of Barton, a knight's fee and a half in drengage? Nothing was more common than for an individual or a family, on settling in a new home, to drop the name of their old and assume that of their new estate or abode. A Richard Hulton (? the same who held the hundred of Salford in serjeanty) had a grant of the lands in Barton, of Edith de Barton, by the consent of Gilbert de Notton (co. York) her husband. Did Gilbert de Notton become de Barton, by marrying Edith de Barton, "the lady of Barton?" We think reference to a few deeds of Barton very badly transcribed in an abridged form by Dr. Keuerden, will furnish ground for believing that such was the fact. By deeds without date Gilbert de Barton, son of William de Noden (? Notton or Newton), gave to P. de Dumplington a parcel of land called "Cockney," for a yearly rent of 12d. at Pentecost, which was by another deed reduced to 6d. Then Agnes, "primogenito" daughter of Gilbert de Barton, quit-claims to Robert Gredley, all the right in Barton, and all its members which had been her mother's, Edith [or Cicely] de Barton, and her brother John's. Whom Agnes married does not appear, but she had a daughter Loretta. Some obscure deeds show that Gilbert de Barton conveyed the manor to Aaron, son of Josias (?) (Jocij) Jew of York, who re-conveyed it to Gilbert for life, with remainder to John, son of Gilbert, and heirs; then to Agnes, sister of John; then to the right heirs of Gilbert. This seems to indicate that John, son of Gilbert, dying without issue, Agnes became sole heiress. There is a curious but imperfect deed by which John, son of Gilbert de Barton knight, gives to Robert de Grelle, lord of Mamecestre, the homage and service of eighteen persons named. By another deed he gave to Robert Grelle lands and a mill in Barton, with a fishery in the Irwell. Then John, son and heir of Gilbert de Barton, quit-claims to Roger [sic, ? Robert] Grelle all his right, &c, in all the manor of Barton, with all the hamlets belonging to the manor, viz.
