- LifeSketch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoffrey_I,_Duke_of_Brittany Geoffrey I, Duke of Brittany (c. 980 – 20 November 1008), also known as Geoffrey of Rennes and Geoffrey Berengar, was the eldest son of Duke Conan I of Brittany. He was Count of Rennes (ruler of the Romano-Frankish civitas of Rennes), by right of succession. In 992 he assumed the title of Duke of Brittany, which had long been an independent state, but he had little control over much of Lower Brittany. Life Geoffrey was the son of Duke Conan I, by his marriage to Ermengarde-Gerberga of Anjou.[1] He was the grandson of Judicael Berengar, Count of Rennes. When Geoffrey succeeded to Brittany he had several problems: Blois was encroaching on his territory, Vikings were threatening his shores, and He had to decide whether to accept the protection offered by Anjou.[2] Norman alliance In 996, at about the age of sixteen, Geoffrey entered into a dynastic alliance with Richard II, Duke of Normandy,[2] with a diplomatic double marriage between the two houses. The church-sanctioned marriage ceremonies were held at Mont Saint-Michel, on the Breton-Norman border, and while Geoffrey married Hawise of Normandy, daughter of Richard I of Normandy and sister of Richard II,[3] Richard married Judith of Brittany, Geoffrey's sister. Geoffrey and Hawise had four children: Alan III of Brittany (997-1040)[1] Evenus (born c. 998, died after 1037)[1] Odo, Count of Penthièvre (died 1079)[1] Adela, Abbess of Saint-Georges[4] Death Geoffrey died on 20 November 1008 while travelling on a pilgrimage to Rome.[4]

- Father: Osborne D'ARQUES I
- Mother: Emma D'IVRY
- Birth: ABT 1016, Poitiers, Vienne, Duchy of Aquitaine, France
- Also known as: William Fitz Osbern
- Also known as: William Osbern de Crepon
- Also known as: Guillaume FitzOsbern
- Occupation: Regent of England
- Title Of Nobility: Earl of Hereford
- LifeSketch: William FitzOsbern (c. 1020 – 22 February 1071), Lord of Breteuil, in Normandy, was a relative and close counsellor of William the Conqueror and one of the great magnates of early Norman England. FitzOsbern was created Earl of Wessex, a title which his son did not inherit. He was created Earl of Hereford before 22 February 1067, one of the first peerage titles in the English peerage. He is one of the very few proven companions of William the Conqueror known to have fought at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. His chief residence was Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight, one of many English castles he built. Origins William FitzOsbern was the son of Osbern the Steward, a nephew of Duchess Gunnor, the wife of Duke Richard I of Normandy. Osbern was the steward of his cousin Duke Robert I of Normandy. When Robert left the Duchy to his young son William, Osbern became one of Duke William's guardians. Osbern married Emma, a daughter of Count Rodolf of Ivry, who was a half-brother of Duke Richard I of Normandy. Through her he inherited a large property in central Normandy, including the honours of Pacy and Breteuil. Career pre-1066 William FitzOsbern was probably raised at the court of his cousin William the Bastard, and like his father, became one of the ducal stewards. He founded Cormeilles Abbey and Lyre Abbey (La Vieille-Lyre), and Saint-Evroul Abbey. He was one of the earliest and most vigorous advocates of the invasion of England, and tradition holds that, at the Council of Lillebonne, he convinced the doubters amongst the Norman barons of the feasibility of the invasion. FitzOsbern's younger brother Osbern FitzOsbern was one of Edward the Confessor's chaplains, and possessed the rich church of Bosham in Sussex, where King Harold went to in the first scene of the Bayeux tapestry, and was well placed to pass along intelligence on the situation in England. He later became Bishop of Exeter. In England after 1066 As William the Bastard became King of England, FitzOsbern was given charge of the Isle of Wight, and then before 22 February 1067 he was created Earl of Hereford as well as Earl of Gloucester, Earl of Worcester and Earl of Oxfordshire. That western part of England was not yet fully under Norman control; the understanding must have been that FitzOsbern was to take charge of the conquest of these regions when he was able. In the summer of 1067 King William returned to Normandy and left his half-brother Bishop Odo of Bayeux and FitzOsbern in charge of England during his absence. The King was back in England in 1068 and FitzOsbern accompanied him in the subjugation of south-west England. He attended the King's Whitsun court in May 1068, and then visited Normandy, where he fell ill for some months. In February or March 1069 FitzOsbern was asked by William to oversee the peace in York, where Gilbert de Ghent was made castellan of the new castle, but FitzOsbern returned south in time to attend the King's Easter court in April 1069 before returning to York. Eadric the Wild launched a campaign of Anglo-Saxon resistance in the West Midlands, with the assistance of a number of Welsh princes (who had lately been allies of the Anglo-Saxon kings). In 1069 the revolt was crushed, and it is likely FitzOsbern played a major part in this, although the details are not certain. During this time FitzOsbern and his followers pushed on westwards into Wales, thus beginning the Norman conquest of the Welsh Kingdom of Gwent. Castle builder As part of the assertion of Norman control over England and Wales, FitzOsbern was one of the major Norman castle builders. Early castles attributed to him include Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight, Chepstow Castle (Striguil) in South Wales, Wigmore Castle and Clifford Castle in Herefordshire, Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire and Monmouth Castle in Wales. FitzOsbern also created or improved fortifications in the towns of Hereford and Shrewsbury. Distraction and death in Flanders In 1070 trouble arose in Flanders, where King William's brother-in-law Count Baldwin VI of Flanders had died, leaving his county and his young sons in the hands of his widow Richilde, Countess of Mons and Hainaut. Her control of Flanders was challenged by the brother of her late husband, Robert the Frisian. Looking for help, she offered herself in marriage to FitzOsbern. He could not resist the chance to become also Count of this rich principality close to Normandy, and hurried there with his army, where he was defeated by the Count of Flanders and killed in the Battle of Cassel on 22 February 1071. Marriages and progeny FitzOsbern married twice: Firstly to Adeliza de Tosny, daughter of Roger I of Tosny, by whom he had three children: 1. William of Breteuil, who succeeded his father in Normandy. He was held captive and tortured by Ascelin Gouel de Perceval 'Lupus', Sire d'Yvry, until he finally granted his daughter Isabella de Breteuil in marriage to him. 2. Roger de Breteuil, 2nd Earl of Hereford, who succeeded his father in England and Wales; 3. Emma de Breteuil, wife of Ralph de Gael, 1st Earl of Norfolk Secondly, it must be assumed, in 1070 he married Richilde, Countess of Mons and Hainaut shortly before the Battle of Cassel in 1071 by issuing a male descendent who was taken to the Burgundy region of Savoy. 1. - Title Of Nobility: Viscount de Bayeaux, 1089, Bayeaux, Normandie, France
- LifeSketch: Ranulf de Briquessart (or Ranulf the Viscount) (died c. 1089 or soon after) was an 11th-century Norman magnate and viscount. Ranulf's family were connected to the House of Normandy by marriage, and, besides Odo, bishop of Bayeux, was the most powerful magnate in the Bessin region. He married Margaret, daughter of Richard le Goz, Viscount of Avranches, whose son and successor Hugh d'Avranches became Earl of Chester in England c. 1070. Ranulf is probably the "Ranulf the viscount" who witnessed a charter of William, Duke of Normandy, at Caen on 17 June 1066. Ranulf helped preside over a judgement in the curia of King William (as duke) in 1076 in which a disputed mill was awarded to the Abbey of Mont St. Michael. On 14 July 1080 he witnessed a charter to the Abbey of Lessay (in the diocese of Coutances), another in the same year addressed to Remigius de Fécamp bishop of Lincoln in favour of the Abbey of Préaux. and one more in the same period, 1079 x 1082, to the Abbey of St Stephen of Caen. His name is attached to a memorandum in 1085, and on 24 April 1089 he witnessed a confirmation of Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy and Count of Maine to St Mary of Bayeaux, where he appears below his son in the witness list. He certainly died sometime after this. His son Ranulf le Meschin became ruler of Cumberland and later Earl of Chester. The Durham Liber Vitae, c. 1098 x 1120, shows that his eldest son was one Richard, who died in youth, and that he had another son named William. He also had a daughter called Agnes, who later married Robert (III) de Grandmesnil (died 1136). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranulf_de_Briquessart ............................................................................... Ranulf II de Bayeux, Vicomte de Bessin was born circa 1050 at Bayeux, Normandy, France. He was the son of Ranulph de Bayeux, Vicomte de Bessin and Aliz de Normandie. He married Margaret d'Avranches, daughter of Richard le Goz, Vicomte d'Avranches and Emma de Contville, circa 1069 at Avranches, Normandy, France. He died in November 1120. He gained the title of Vicomte de Bayeux [Normandy] in 1089, or 'de la Bessin', of which Bayeux is the capital. Children of Ranulf II de Bayeux, Vicomte de Bessin and Margaret Le Goz of Avaranches 1. Vicomte du Bessin (Bayeux). "…Ranulfus vicecomes Baiocensis…" witnessed the charter dated 1064 under which Guillaume II Duke of Normandy settled a claim in favour of the monks of Marmoutier relating to property donated by "Guido de Valle"[395]. "…Rannulfus filius Rannulfi vicecomitis…Rannulfus vicecomes" witnessed the charter dated 24 Apr 1089 under which Robert III Duke of Normandy donated property to Bayeux cathedral[396]. The Liber Vitæ of Durham names "Rannulfus Mahald uxor eius Ricardus Rannulfus de Mesc filii eorum Lucia uxor Rann"[397]. m MARGUERITE [Mathilde] d'Avranches, daughter of RICHARD Vicomte d'Avranches & his wife --- (-after [1098]). She is named "Mathilda soror Hugonis comitis" by Orderic Vitalis, who also names her son[398]. Her husband is named in another passage, as father of his son Guillaume[399]. The Liber Vitæ of Durham names "Rannulfus Mahald uxor eius Ricardus Rannulfus de Mesc filii eorum Lucia uxor Rann"[400]. Vicomte Ranulf & his wife had four children: i) RICHARD (after [1098]). The Liber Vitæ of Durham names "Rannulfus Mahald uxor eius Ricardus Rannulfus de Mesc filii eorum Lucia uxor Rann"[401]. As Richard is named in this source together with his brother’s wife, his date of death is estimated based on his brother’s estimated marriage date. “R de Meschin, Richerio vicecomiti Karleoli” donated property to Wetherall priory, Cumberland, for the soul of “…Richard fratris mei…et uxoris meæ Luciæ…”, by undated charter, witnessed by “Osberto vicecomite, Walteof filio Cospatricii comitis, Forno Sigulfi filio, Chetello Ectredi filio…”[402]. ii) RANULF du Bessin "le Meschin" (-17 or 27 Jan 1129, bur Chester, Abbey of St Werburgh). Orderic Vitalis names him and his mother[403]. "…Rannulfus filius Rannulfi vicecomitis…Rannulfus vicecomes" witnessed the charter dated 24 Apr 1089 under which Robert III Duke of Normandy donated property to Bayeux cathedral[404]. The Liber Vitæ of Durham names "Rannulfus Mahald uxor eius Ricardus Rannulfus de Mesc filii eorum Lucia uxor Rann"[405]. He succeeded his father as Vicomte du Bessin (Bayeux). He was appointed Vicomte d'Avranches in 1120 after the death of his first cousin Richard d'Avranches, and also obtained the grant of the county palatine of Chester thereby becoming Earl of Chester (upon which he surrendered the lordship of Carlisle). - EARLS of CHESTER. iii) WILLIAM FitzRanulf (-[1130/35]). The Cronicon Cumbriæ records that William I King of England granted “totam terram de comitatu Cumbriæ” to “Ranulpho de Meschines, et Galfrido fratri eiusdem…et Willielmo fratri eorundem terram de Copland”[406]. - see below. iv) GEOFFROY of Gillesland . The Cronicon Cumbriæ records that William I King of England granted “totam terram de comitatu Cumbriæ” to “Ranulpho de Meschines, et Galfrido fratri eiusdem Ranulphi totum comitatum Cestriæ, et Willielmo fratri eorundem terram de Copland”, adding that Geoffroy died without heirs and was succeeded by his brother Ranulf[407]. - Title Of Nobility: He succeeded his father as Duke of Brittany.
- LifeSketch: Erispoe was the Duke of Brittany from 851. After the death of his father Nominoe, he led a successful military campaign against the Franks, culminating in his victory at the Battle of Jengland. He is subsequently referred to as "King of Brittany." Erispoe's recorded titles include "provinciæ Brittaniæ princeps" ("prince of the province of Brittany"), "dux Brittonum" ("duke of the Bretons"), and "rex tyrannicus Brittonum" ("usurping king of the Bretons"). However, if Erispoe was usurping regality in Brittany at that time (857), it is not attested in other sources. It may imply continued Frankish resentment of the title. He is called "rex Brittonum" ("king of the Bretons") by Regino of Prüm (who died in 915). Erispoe was born to Nominoe's wife Argentaela, but the date of his birth is not known. He was involved in his father's campaigns to take control of the Frankish counties of Rennes and Nantes. In 843, in alliance with Lambert II of Nantes, Erispoe took command of the Breton army while his father was ill. Lambert had been displaced as ruler of Nantes by Charles the Bald, King of West Francia, who had installed Renaud d'Herbauges in his place. Ambushed by Count Renaud, Erispoe was badly defeated at the initial engagement at Messac. However, the Brittons quickly rallied their troops and took the complacent Franks by surprise shortly thereafter at the Battle of Blain, inflicting a serious defeat resulting in the death of Count Renaud. Having regained his health, Nominoe took command once more. The victory at Blain having secured control of Nantes and Rennes, he raided into Frankish territory, defeating the Franks at the Battle of Ballon in 845. A truce followed, but after Charles regained control of Nantes, Nominoe and Erispoe renewed their offensive in 849. While on campaign, Nominoe died suddenly. Erispoe was proclaimed leader, but immediately after his father's death, his power was challenged by Charles the Bald, still his nominal suzerain. Charles crossed the river Vilaine with an army. Erispoe defeated Charles' army in the decisive Battle of Jengland on 22 August 851. Erispoe met Charles in Angers (possibly in secret) in the days following the battle and concluded a peace treaty in return for being invested with the counties of Rennes and Nantes. South of the Loire, the "Pays de Retz" was detached from the County of Poitou and granted to him as well. Charles and Erispoe also created a baptismal alliance, whereby Charles stood as godfather at the baptism of Erispoe's infant son Conan, but whether in 851 or 856 is unknown. Finally, in 851 Charles gave Erispoe royal regalia (robes at least) and Erispoe in turn pledged himself to Charles with the giving of hands and an oath of fidelity. Erispoe subsequently over-ate at the banquet given in his honor. According to the "Annals Bertiniani," at Louviers in February 856, Erispoe's daughter (unnamed in the sources) was betrothed to Charles' young son, Louis the Stammerer, who was granted the "ducatus Cenomannicus" as sub-king of Neustria with Le Mans as his capital, with the consent of the Frankish magnates: "Karlus rex cum Respogio Brittone paciscens, filiam eius filio suo Ludoico despondet, dato illi ducatu Cenomannico usque ad viam quae a Lotitia Parisiorum Cesaredunum Turonum ducit." ("King Charles, making peace with Erispoe of Brittany, the daughter of whom was betrothed to his son Louis, gave the duchy of Maine as far as the road from Paris to Tours as duke.") Erispoe was at peace with Charles for the whole of his reign after Jengland, and he governed as a typical Carolingian regional official might, with the added dignity of a "consors regni" (royal consort). Erispoe's use of a royal seal has led to the false belief that he was a king ("rex"), but in fact, he probably received the right to use such a seal from Charles, who himself used an imperial seal. Erispoe was a benefactor of the abbey of Redon, as his father had been; his power base lay in the Vannetais and southeast Brittany (even more easterly than his father). In 853, the town of Nantes was plundered by the Vikings. Erispoe launched a war against them but it came to an end when they departed a few years later. By his wife Marmohec (who predeceased him) he had at least two children, the aforementioned Conan and a girl, who eventually married Gurvand of Rennes. In November 857, Erispoe was assassinated at the altar of a church, which was then considered a place of asylum, by his cousin and successor Salomon, aided by an obscure Almarchus (Almarus). He was buried at Redon Abbey. -- Wikiwand: Erispoe

- LifeSketch: Thorold/Turold of Bucknall, Lincolnshire, Earl of Leicester and Sheriff of Lincoln. Thorold, who may or may not be identical with a Thorold of Bucknall (both names are variants of the Scandinavian Thorvaldr); In the time of Ethelred's son, St Edward the Confessor, who reigned from 1042 to 1066. He was evidenced in Domesday Book as a benefactor of Crowland Abbey, to which he gave a parcel of land at Bucknell. (The Historia Croylandensis does not mention Godgifu, but says that Thorold gave not Spalding but Bucknall to Crowland.) He was cognatus, or cousin, of Earl Algar Aelfgar of Mercia, son of Lady Godiva. He md. dau. of Willelm Malet, seigneur de Graville and Elise Crespin. Turold gave further land in Bucknell to the abbey of St Nicholas bef. 1079 at Angers. He died bef. 1079. Citations K. S. B. Keats-Rohan, "Parentage of Countess Lucy". K. S. B. Keats-Rohan, "Parentage of Countess Lucy". A spurious charter of Crowland Abbey made Turold of Bucknall (the Sheriff) the founder of the priory of Spalding as a cell of Crowland. It also called Turold brother of Godiva countess of Mercia, but subsequently described Godiva's son Earl Algar as Turold's cognatus (cousin).. K.S.B.
