- LifeSketch: WILLIAM REDE, MP was born about 1500 of Wengrade Mannor, Great Tew, Chipping, Sodbury, Gloucestersire, England, to Captain William Reed (1446-1481) and Anne Bridges (1460-1486.) He married Catherine Rowden about 1510. Biography 'William Rede was connected by descent with a number of the principal families in the Welsh marches and the west midlands, and his own marriage allied him further with those in his native county of Gloucestershire. His father, a servant of the 2nd Baron Beauchamp of Powick, had married one of his master’s younger daughters and thereby gained a small estate in north Gloucestershire and adjoining areas. 'It is not certain to which kinsman Rede owed his election to the Parliament of 1529, to his stepfather Thomas, de jure 5th Lord Berkeley, who was to mention both Rede and his wife in his will, or to Sir John Brydges, one of Berkeley’s associates whose service Rede may already have entered. If Rede was, or was related to, the man who in 1548 held the lease of some property in Ashton Keynes, Wiltshire, four miles from Cricklade, this may have determined his constituency. Presumably he was re-elected in 1536 in compliance with the general directive for the return of the previous Members. It was doubtless Brydges who secured Rede’s return in 1554 as junior knight of the shire to Mary’s third Parliament: he was then styled ‘senior’ on the indenture to distinguish him from his nephew, William Rede, ‘junior’, of Boddington. He was to be informed against in the King’s bench, along with another nephew, John Rede II, for quitting this Parliament prematurely without leave, but as no further process was taken against him he may have cleared himself. In 1556 he was named an executor of Brydges’s will. He, or his nephew and namesake, is probably to be identified with the gentleman pensioner, as several others appointed at the setting up of the company of pensioners were kinsmen or clients of Brydges, and either of the pair may have been the esquire in the household of Anne of Cleves.3 'As a younger son Rede did not inherit much property but he appears to have acquired a substantial estate. It was probably he who in July 1544 purchased crown lands valued at £212; in the following September he was granted lands formerly belonging to Tewkesbury abbey, including the abbot’s own house called the Vineyard; and in 1552, with his nephew John, he purchased part of another manor that had belonged to the abbey for £387. On acquiring the ‘Vineyard’ he moved to Tewkesbury from Mitton, where until then he had lived.4 'It is not known whether Rede received a grounding in the law, but several of his relatives and friends, including (Sir) David Broke and Thomas Williams II, and his nephew John Rede, were lawyers. He appeared as a litigant in the court of requests and the Star Chamber, and in Edward VI’s reign he was to be accused of abetting his ‘cousin’ (Sir) Edmund Brydges in contempt of the council in the marches.5 'Rede made his will on 20 Aug. 1557, asking to be buried in the chancel of Bredon church, near his wife and eldest son. After providing for his daughters and several nieces, he left the ‘Vineyard’ to his nephew John and the bulk of his possessions to his surviving son Giles, whom he made an executor with his nephew and namesake and his ‘good friend’ Arthur Porter. Rede died on 3 Nov. 1558, and in June the following year the wardship and marriage of Giles Rede, then aged 18, was granted to (Sir) Thomas Russell.6 CATHERINE ROWDEN was born about 1488 of Wickford, Essex, England, to Richard Rowdon (1466-1526) and Cicely Arnold (1472-1558.) She married William Rede about 1510. Catherine passed away about 1512, age 24, England. Child of William Rede and Catherine Rowden: 1. *ELIZABETH ANN READE (1524-) +

- Father: Appius Claudius Sabinus REGILLENSIS
- Birth: ABT 480 BC
- Title Of Nobility: Consul of the Roman Republic
- Life Sketch: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appius_Claudius_Crassus
- LifeSketch: Appius Claudius Crassus Sabinus Regillensis, usually referred to simply as Appius Claudius Crassus or Crassinus, was a Roman politician during the fifth century BC. He was consul in 451 BC, alongside Titus Genucius Augurinus, and the same year chosen one of the decemvirs, a committee of ten men chosen in the place of consuls to draw up the tables of Roman law beginning in 451. He was the only member of the college to serve a second term in 450, having appointed himself to the position, together with nine others whose opinions agreed with his or whom he was able to dominate. They continued in office the following year, without bothering to hold elections, but were overthrown in a popular revolt, and the consular government was restored. Claudius is generally supposed to have been the son of Appius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis, consul in 471 BC, and grandson of the Appius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis who first migrated to Rome with his followers in 504 BC, and held the consulship in 495. The Gaius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis who was consul in 460 was his uncle. Claudius had at least two sons: the elder was Appius Claudius Crassus, consular tribune in 424; the younger was named Publius. Some suppose the decemvir to be the same as the consul of 471, based on his filiation, Ap. f. M. n., in the consular fasti. Furthermore, both men were said to have killed themselves before they could be brought to trial for their misdeeds. However, chronology suggests that they were different people; the consul of 471 is supposed to have been a candidate for the consulship eleven years earlier, in 482, and his father was a wealthy and powerful man more than twenty years before that, which would have made the consul an older man at the time of the decemvirate, and when his son, the consular tribune of 424, was born. Both Livy and Dionysius describe the decemvir and the consul of 471 as different men, and refer to Gaius Claudius as his uncle. Moreover, the consul had already demonstrated his severity and enmity toward the plebeians, while the decemvir pretended friendship toward the common people, even appointing several plebeians as decemvir, until his true nature was revealed. Nonetheless, the identity of the two Claudii cannot be firmly rejected. From his father, Claudius inherited the surnames Sabinus and Regillensis (sometimes given as Inregillensis). Crassus, which must have been a personal cognomen, means "thick" or "stout", and could apply equally to a large man or a dullard; although if the latter were intended, it was probably given ironically, for Claudius was by all accounts a very clever schemer. The name is found in both this form and its diminutive, Crassinus, and was inherited by his descendants, who no longer used Sabinus or Regillensis. In the consular fasti for 451 BC, Claudius' name is given as Ap. Claudius Ap. f. M. n. Crassin. Regill. Sabinus II. The reason why Sabinus and Regillensis are inverted in this case is not known.

- Father: Appius Claudius SABINUS REGILLENSIS OR Inregillensis
- Birth: 500 BC, Ancient Rome, Roman Empire
- Title Of Nobility: Consul of the Roman Republic
- Clan Name: house of the Claudii
- LifeSketch: Appius Claudius Ap. f. M. n. Sabinus Regillensis (or Inregillensis), was a member of the great patrician house of the Claudii at Ancient Rome. He held the consulship in 471 BC. Appius was the son of Attius Clausus, a wealthy Sabine merchant who emigrated to Rome with a large following in 504 BC, and was admitted to the patriciate under the name of Appius Claudius Sabinus. The elder Claudius became a senator, and held the consulship in 495; he distinguished himself as the leading figure in the aristocratic party, and the fiercest opponent of the plebeians. He had at least two sons: Appius, the consul of 471 BC, and Gaius, who was consul in 460 BC. The younger Appius is usually regarded as the father of Appius Claudius Crassus, the decemvir, and is so described by both Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus. Livy calls Appius the youngest of the decemvirs, and he is generally supposed to have been the father of Appius Claudius Crassus, consular tribune in 424 BC. In addition, Appius, the consul of 471, was well known for his severity and hatred of the plebeians; while Appius the decemvir was thought to be mild and fair toward the plebeians, until his true nature was revealed during the second year of the decemvirate. The matter cannot be definitively answered at this time. Career Appius was a candidate for the consulship of 482 BC, but his election was blocked by the tribunes of the plebs. Nine years later, the patricians succeeded in electing him consul, with the goal of preventing the law proposed by the tribune Volero Publilius, transferring the election of the tribunes of the plebs from the comitia curiata to the comitia tributa. Appius' colleague was Titus Quinctius Capitolinus Barbatus. On the day appointed for the election, the consuls, a number of senators of consular rank, and other members of the Roman aristocracy attempted to block the passage of the law. Gaius Laetorius, one of the tribunes, who had unwisely harangued Appius and his family the previous day, and vowed with his life to see the law carried through, ordered the patricians to depart so that the plebeians could vote on the matter. When Appius refused to budge and argued that Laetorius had used the wrong legal formula to dismiss his opponents, Laetorius demanded his removal by force. Appius in turn sent a lictor to arrest the tribune, but the crowd protected him and turned on Appius, who was hurried out of the Forum at his colleague's urging. The next day, Quinctius, who had helped settle the crowd and managed to have the matter postponed until passions had calmed, urged the Senate to defer to the people, as the stand off between the patricians and plebeians over this issue was threatening the state itself. Appius argued that this course of action amounted to cowardice, and that the Senate was submitting itself to oppression by the plebeians. But Quinctius' argument carried the day and the Senate agreed to allow the passage of the lex Publilia. Later in the year, Appius was given command of a Roman army, and sent to fight the Volsci. Stung by his defeat at the hands of the tribunes, the consul was determined to subject his army to the harshest discipline. But his disrespect for the plebeians was so notorious that his soldiers were openly insubordinate and disobedient. They refused to attack the enemy, instead retreating to their camp, and only turning against the Volscian forces when they were attacked themselves. His officers dissuaded Appius from taking immediate action against the soldiers, but the army was attacked again and fell into disarray as it left the camp. After reaching the safety of Roman territory, Appius gathered the remnants of his army, and ordered that all of the soldiers who had lost their equipment or standards, and all of the officers who had deserted their posts should be flogged and beheaded. He then punished the remainder of the army with decimation, the earliest instance of this particular punishment occurring in Roman history. In 470 BC, Appius opposed the agrarian law originally proposed by Spurius Cassius Viscellinus, and was summoned to answer for his conduct by the plebeian tribunes, Marcus Duilius and Gnaeus Siccius. At his trial, Appius had the full support of the Senate, which viewed him as the champion of the aristocratic order. He replied to the charges with such pride, vigour and contempt that "one might have thought that he was prosecuting his accusers rather than defending himself against them." Uncertain how to proceed, the tribunes adjourned the trial. However, Appius fell ill and died before it could before it could be resumed. A eulogy was given, which the tribunes attempted to prevent. But here popular opinion was against them, so great was Appius' majesty that thousands attended his funeral and listened to the words spoken in praise of their enemy.

- Father: Appius Claudius SABINUS REGILLENSIS OR Inregillensis
- Title Of Nobility: Consul of the Roman Republic
- LifeSketch: Gaius Claudius Sabinus Regillensis (or Inregillensis), was a member of the great patrician house of the Claudii at Ancient Rome. He held the consulship in 460 BC. Gaius was the younger son of Attius Clausus, a wealthy Sabine merchant who emigrated to Rome with a large following in 504 BC, and was admitted to the patriciate under the name of Appius Claudius Sabinus. The elder Claudius became a senator, and held the consulship in 495; he distinguished himself as the leading figure in the aristocratic party, and the fiercest opponent of the plebeians. He had at least two sons: Appius, who was consul in 471, and Gaius, who held the same magistracy in 460. Almost nothing is known of Gaius Claudius' private life, except for his attachment to his nephew,[ii] Appius Claudius Crassus, the decemvir, whom he advised and subsequently defended following the overthrow of the decemvirate. Career Elected consul in 460 with Publius Valerius Poplicola, Claudius and his colleague first had to contend with continuing arguments between Rome's aristocratic and popular interests, concerning a proposal to strictly limit the powers of the consuls. This measure had been brought forward two years earlier by Gaius Terentilius Arsa, one of the tribunes of the plebs; but its consideration had been twice postponed, first at the request of Quintus Fabius Vibulanus, the praefectus urbi, who argued that it was treasonous to consider such a law when both consuls were out of the city, and persuaded Terentilius' colleagues to intervene. The following year the law was tabled again following strange omens[iii] and a deadlock over a levy of troops by the consuls, followed by the excitement of the trial of Caeso Quinctius Cincinnatus. Rumours of all kinds flew, none more serious than that Caeso Quinctius, who had fled into exile the previous year, had returned to the city at the head of a conspiracy of young noblemen, intent on the murder of the tribunes of the people, and any others who had opposed the aristocratic party. There was even a rumour that the conspirators were to be aided by the Aequi and the Volsci. Aulus Verginius, the tribune who had brought charges against Caeso, demanded an investigation to put down the conspiracy, before the liberty of the Roman people could be stolen away. But Claudius gave a speech opposing any such investigation, asserting not only that the rumours were false, but that the tribunes themselves were responsible for them, as an excuse to banish other young aristocrats in the same manner that they had Quinctius.

- LifeSketch: Saint Matilda (c.?894-14 March 968) was Duchess of Saxony from 912 and German queen (Queen of the Franks) from 919 by her marriage with Henry the Fowler, the first king of the Ottonian dynasty. Upon her husband's death in 936, she founded Quedlinburg Abbey to commemorate the late king. Matilda lived to see Western Imperial rule restored when her eldest son Otto was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 962. Her surname refers to Ringelheim, where her comital Immedinger relatives established a nunnery about 940. «b»Biography«/b» The details of St. Matilda's life come primarily from brief mentions in the Res gestae saxonicae by the monastic historian Widukind of Corvey (c. 925-after 973), and from two hagiographies: the Vita antiquior, written about 974, and Vita posterior, circa 1003. Matilda was born in Enger near Herford, in the Westphalian part of the German stem duchy of Saxony. She was the daughter of the local count Dietrich and his wife Reinhild, a noblewoman of Danish and Frisian descent. Matilda's biographers traced her ancestry back to the legendary Saxon leader Widukind (c. 730-807), who presumably was buried in the Enger church. Her sister Frederuna married Count Wichmann the Elder, a member of the Billung dynasty. As a young girl she was sent to Herford Abbey, where her grandmother Matilda was abbess and where her reputation for beauty and virtue and possibly also her extensive Westphalian dowry is said to have attracted the attention of the Saxon duke Otto the Illustrious, who betrothed her to his son and heir, Henry, about 20 years her senior. By the conjugal union, the Ottonian dynasty (Liudolfings) considerably enlarged their possessions in the western parts of Saxony. Henry's previous marriage with Hatheburg of Merseburg was annulled. They were married at the Pfalz of Wallhausen in 909 (or 913). As the eldest surviving son, Henry succeeded his father as Duke of Saxony in 912 and upon the death of King Conrad I was elected King of East Francia (later Germany) in 919. He and Matilda had three sons and two daughters: 1.) Hedwig (c. 910-965), who married the West Frankish duke Hugh the Great and became the mother of Hugh Capet, the first King of the Franks of the House of Capet 2.) Otto (912-973), who succeeded his father as Duke of Saxony and King of Germany from 936, crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 962 3.) Gerberga (913 -984), married (1) Duke Giselbert of Lorraine and (2) King Louis IV of France 4.) Henry (919/21-955), appointed Duke of Bavaria from 948 5.) Bruno (925-965), later Saint, became Archbishop of Cologne in 953 and Duke of Lorraine in 954. In 929 Matilda received the estates of Quedlinburg, Pöhlde, Nordhausen in Thuringia, Grona (near Göttingen), and Duderstadt as her wittum. After her husband died in 936 at Memleben, Matilda and her son, now King Otto I of East Francia, established Quedlinburg Abbey near Halberstadt in Saxony (present-day Saxony-Anhalt, Germany) in Henry's memory. The abbey was a convent of noble canonesses, where her granddaughter, also named Matilda, became abbess in 966. At first the Queen Mother remained at the court of her son. During quarrels between the new king and his rebellious brother Henry, Matilda seemed to have favoured her younger son, as he was born after his father's accession to the throne. In turn, a cabal of royal advisors is reported to have accused her of decreasing the royal treasury in order to pay for her charitable activities. After a brief exile at her Westphalian estates in Enger, where she established a college of canons in 947, Matilda was brought back to court at the urging of King Otto's first wife, the Anglo-Saxon princess Edith of Wessex. Matilda died after long illness on 14 March 968 in Quedlinburg Abbey, outliving her husband by 32 years, and having seen the restoration of the Holy Roman Empire. Her and Henry's mortal remains are buried in the crypt of St. Servatius Church in Quedlinburg. «b»Veneration«/b» Medieval chroniclers like Liutprand of Cremona and Thietmar of Merseburg celebrated Matilda for her devotion to prayer and almsgiving. Her first biographer depicted her (in a passage attributed to the sixth-century vita of the Frankish queen Radegund by Venantius Fortunatus) leaving her husband's side in the middle of the night and sneaking off to church to pray. St. Matilda founded many religious institutions, including the canonry of Quedlinburg, which became a center of ecclesiastical and secular life in Germany under the rule of the Ottonian dynasty. She also founded the convents of St. Wigbert in Quedlinburg, in Pöhlde, Enger, and Nordhausen, likely the source of at least one of her vitae. She was later canonized, with her cult largely confined to Saxony and Bavaria. St. Matilda's feast day according to the regional German calendar of saints is 14 March. In 1856-58 the Neo-Gothic St. Matilda's Church was erected in Quedlinburg, according to plans designed by the Austrian architect Friedrich Schmidt. Another St. Matilda's Church was consecrated in Laatzen, Lower Saxony in 1938. The Melkite Greek Catholic community of Aleppo built a church dedicated to Saint Matilda in 1964. There is a stained glass window dedicated to Saint Matilda in the parish church (built 1838-41) of Coole, Ireland.

His name, Llywarch, seems to break down into two parts, with 'warch' perhaps being 'varch' (later 'vark' and then 'march'), which means a horse or stallion. The first part is more complicated. 'Llu' forms the word 'host' ('lluoedd'), while 'llu arfog' is an armed force. so Llywarch could be taken to mean 'stallion host' (literally, 'cavalry force', or perhaps more poetically, 'war horse' as a metaphor for the leader of the host). Another school of thought which has far less weight to its argument proposes that 'Lly' descends from 'Lleu' and then Lugh, the sun god, making the name 'Lugh's stallion'.
