- LifeSketch: From https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Roger_Corbet_(died_1395) Sir Roger Corbet (died 1395), of Moreton Corbet, Shropshire was a landowner and politician who was a knight of the shire for Shropshire in three Parliaments of England. He was involved in a series of complex and sharply contested property disputes with members of his own family. A remaining part of the medieval keep at Moreton Corbet. The castle was heavily modified in the mid-16th century by Sir Andrew Corbet and an entirely new building on the Italian model begun next to it by his son, Robert. Roger Corbet was the third son of: Sir Robert Corbet (died 1375) of Moreton Corbet.[3] The Corbets of Moreton Corbet were descended from the Corbet family of Caus Castle, who had been important landowners in the Welsh Marches from the time of William the Conqueror. The senior line of the Corbets at Caus had petered out in 1347 and the properties passed to Ralph de Stafford, 1st Earl of Stafford[4] The cadet branch made their home at Moreton Corbet Castle, then a significant stronghold in north Shropshire. Elizabeth, daughter of Fulk, 1st Baron Strange of Blackmere.[5] The Le Strange family were another important dynasty of Marcher Lords. Fulk le Strange was called to parliament by Edward II and served him as Seneschal of Gascony,[6] a key post in the administration of the remaining Plantagenet possessions in France. The title could be passed through both male and female, and in 1383 it passed via female descent and marriage to the Talbot family, later to become Earls of Shrewsbury.[4] Roger Corbet had two older brothers, Thomas and Fulk, as well as a younger brother, John, and a sister, Joan.[3] He inherited most of the family estates only because of a complex series of arrangements made by his parents. As the eldest son, Thomas, predeceased his parents, they were concerned to keep the estates in the Corbet family by preventing their going to Elizabeth, Thomas's daughter, who had married Sir John Ipstones,[7] later twice MP for Staffordshire.[8] Hence they initiated a series of transactions, some involving their daughters, intended to put most of the estates in tail, and favouring in particular Fulk and Roger.[5] However, some of the provisions were mutually-contradictory, generating the disputes Roger pursued in the 1380s and 1390s.[9] In fact, litigation began even before the death of Sir Robert. In 1374 Elizabeth and Ipstones went to the Court of Common Pleas to try to get possession of the manor of Braunstone in Leicestershire, which had been given to Thomas Erdington, the son of Roger's sister, Margaret.[8] Landowner and litigant When Sir Robert died in 1375, most of the estates passed to his eldest remaining son, Sir Fulk. His widow held as jointure a number of properties: the double manor of Lawley, both parts of which had been Corbet property since the previous century;[10] Bletchley, where Elizabeth established a court leet;[11] and Hopton Wafers, in the south of Shropshire. When she died, in 1381, these passed to Roger. Sir Fulk himself died in 1382 and the entailed estates also passed to Roger: Shawbury, Moreton Corbet, Habberley, Rowton and three other Shropshire manors. The unentailed Corbet estates were to go to Fulk's daughter, another Elizabeth, who was still a minor. However, there were serious complications regarding four of the young Elizabeth's properties. Under a fine levied around 1363,[9] Yockleton, Shelve, Wentnor and a fourth part of Caus Forest had been granted for life to Joan, Roger's sister, and her husband, Sir Robert de Harley. A year later, Joan and Harley had leased the properties to Sir Fulk for £60 per annum for the remainder of their lives, acknowledging that they were held of the king by knight service. By a third fine, around 1368, they had provided for the estates to pass to Roger in the event of Fulk's death. The death of Fulk exposed the inherent contradiction: Joan was still alive, so Fulk's heir could claim the estates under the second fine. However, Fulk's death raised Roger's expectation of gaining control, under the terms of the third fine. Worse still, Fulk's widow, yet another Elizabeth, claimed the properties as part of her jointure. Roger went to the Court of Chancery to try to vindicate his position, supported by Joan and Harley. Richard II's lawyers argued that the properties should escheat to the Crown while the young Elizabeth was still a minor. In 1384, Richard II commissioned an inquisition by Robert Belknap and Robert Charleton, which seems to have decided for the escheat. Roger Corbet then took legal action to recover the estates and gained them in 1385. This was not the end, as Elizabeth attained the age of majority in 1390. She was now married to John Mawddwy or de la Pole, lord of Dinas Mawddwy, who raised the issue of the four estates again. Joan was now married to John Darras, and they took Corbet's side. As "strife and debate" was threatening to turn into something worse, the disputants were summoned on 23 June to appear in person before King and Council in Chancery, all being required to provide security for good behaviour in the very considerable sum of 200 marks each.[5] After further delays, the disputed estates passed to the Mawddwys, and later to their daughter Elizabeth, who married Hugh Burgh, a future MP for Shropshire and Lord High Treasurer of Ireland. By the late 14th century Shropshire's landowners had almost entirely withdrawn from actual cultivation of the land.[12] Like most of their peers, the Corbets had rented out most of their demesne lands to tenants by the 1380s, under a variety of arrangements: tenancy at will, customary tenancies, sharecropping. The times were turbulent and uncertain and the Black death had made labour scarce, expensive, and hard to manage. Landed families were better off with a predictable income from rents than trying to exploit the land for themselves in the face of difficult conditions and volatile markets. Family tree The family tree illustrates the main lines of descent involved in the property conflicts of the late 14th century. [show]The Corbets of Moreton Corbet: 14th Century Political and military career Apart from the property dispute with his own family, there were few occasions when Corbet's behaviour gave cause for concern to the authorities. In general he was accepted as a good guarantor of others' goodwill. In 1378 he and Sir Fulk stood surety for James Audley, 2nd Baron Audley,[5] a Staffordshire magnate who took custody of Whittington Castle, seat of the Barons FitzWarin, during the minority of the 5th Baron, and he stood as guarantor for Sir Fulk when he took over the farm of a Fitzwarin manor. By 1382, he was married to Margaret Erdington – part of a double link between the families, as his sister Margaret married his brother-in-law, Sir Thomas Erdington.[13] However, while Sir Fulk lived, he was head of the family and Roger was a minor, if respected, figure in the county. However, Roger Corbet was made a Justice of the Peace within a year of his brother's death and in the same year, 1383, was elected twice to the House of Commons in the Parliaments of February and August.[5] Probably in the same year, the abbots of Shrewsbury Abbey and Haughmond Abbey acted as godfathers to his first son, Robert. Corbet was made Commissioner of Array in 1385 and by 1388 he had been knighted. It is possible he served overseas in the interim. In 1391 he was again elected to Parliament. He was second to Sir Hugh Cheyne,[14] a close friend of Corbet, who had supported him and Darras before the king in the previous year.[15] Cheyne was probably an older and certainly a more experienced man: a veteran of war in Ireland and of at least six previous parliaments, and a supporter of Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March, whose family the Cheynes had long served. Death However, Corbet's time as head of the family was fairly short. He died in September 1395 and his widow, Margaret, died only two months later. The heir, Robert, was below the age of majority and in 1397 his marriage and wardship were granted to Thomas Percy, 1st Earl of Worcester.[16] However, Henry IV forced Worcester to relinquish the wardship to John Burley, a Shropshire MP and a retainer of Thomas FitzAlan, 12th Earl of Arundel.[17] Marriage and family Sir Roger Corbet married Margaret Erdington, daughter of Sir Giles Erdington of Erdington, Warwickshire. They seem to have had at least two sons[5] and two daughters.[18] Robert Corbet (1383–1420) of Moreton Corbet, Sir Roger's heir, was twice MP for Shropshire.[17] Roger Corbet of Shrewsbury was MP twice for Shrewsbury and once for Shropshire.[19] Joan Corbet[18] Eleanor Corbet ^ Sir Bernard Burke, The general armory of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, p.228, Harrison, London, 1884, accessed 29 November 2013 at Internet Archive ^ Patrick Hanks, Flavia Hodges, A.D. She was therefore granddaughter of Corbet the Norman, who followed William the Conqueror from Normandy. Richardson, using the form Sibyll for her name, terms her the daughter and co-heiress of Robert Fitz Corbet, of Alcester, Worcestershire and Pontesbury, and Woodcote, Shropshire. ... The mother of Sybil -- the wife or wives of Robert Corbet -- are unknown. Based on a Pipe Roll, Weber states that Sybyl Corbet was born in Shropshire in 1092. Cawley estimates her birth as occurring between 1090 and 1095, with her death after 1157. ... Keats-Rohan states that Sibilla was a mistress of Henry I. Cawley estimates it was between 1110 (when she was aged 18) and 1115 (and when she was 23) that her relationship with Henry I, King of England and son of William I and his wife Mathilde de Flandre occurred. Children by Henry I, King of England These children would have been born in the approximate time frame 1110-1115. The known children by Sibyl Corbet were Rainaud de Dunstanville, his brother William and sisters Gundred and Rohese; it is also possible, but not certain, that Sibyl was the mother of the king's illegitimate daughter Sibyl who was married to Alexander after he became king of the Scots in 1107. Cawley estimates she first became Henry's mistress about 1110 when she was aged 15. Assume this was the case, and she bore children by him the next year and at two year intervals thereafter: 1. Reginald or Rainaud de Dunstanville Cited by Lawrie as known child of Sibyl Corbet and King Henry. Reginald Fitz Roy or Fitz Henry or Rainald of Dunstanville, earl of Cornwall m. Beatrice dau. He married (1st) 11 Nov. 1100 MAUD OF SCOTLAND, daughter of Malcolm III (CeannMor), King of Scots, by his 2nd wife, [Saint] Margaret, daughter of Edward Ætheling [see SCOTLAND 1 for her parentage]. She was born in 1079. They had one son, William, and one daughter, Maud. His wife, Maud, died at Westminster 1 May 1118. He married (2nd) at Windsor, Berkshire 29 Jan. 1121 ALICE (or AELIZ, ALEIDE, ALEYDA, AELIDIS, ADELIDE, ADELIDIS, ADELAIDIS, ADELIZA, ADELIZE, ATHELICE) OF LOUVAIN, daughter of Gottfried (or Godefroy) I, Duke of Lower Lorraine, Count of Louvain, by his 1st wife, Ida, daughter of Otto II, Count of Chiny. She was born about 1103. They had no issue. By various mistresses, he had eight illegitimate sons, Robert [Earl of Gloucester], Richard, Fulk, Reynold [Earl of Cornwall], Robert, Gilbert, William de Tracy, and Henry, and nine illegitimate daughters, Maud (or Mathilde) (wife of Rotrou II, Count of Perche), Alice, Maud (or Mathilde) (wife of Conan III, Duke of Brittany), Juliane (wife of Eustache de Pacy, seigneur of Breteuil and Pacy), Mabel (wife of Guillaume Gouet, seigneur of Montmirail), Constance (wife of Roscelin de Beaumont), Aline (wife of Mathieu de Montmorency), Sibyl (wife of Alexander I, King of Scots), and Isabel... Illegitimate son of King Henry I of England, by his mistress, Sibyl Corbet: i. REYNOLD FITZ ROY, Earl of Cornwall, Sheriff of Devon, 1173-5. He married in 1140 MABEL FITZ WILLIAM, daughter of William Fitz Richard, of Cornwall. They had one son, Nicholas, and four daughters, Denise (wife of Richard de Redvers, Earl of Devon), Maud, Sarah (wife of Ademar, Vicomte of Limoges), and Emme (wife of Guy V de Laval, seigneur of Laval). By a mistress, Beatrice de Valle (or Vaux) (afterwards wife of William Briwerre, Knt.), he had an illegitimate son, Henry Fitz Count. By an unknown mistress, he also had one illegitimate son, William. He was granted the lands of William, Earl of Mortain, amounting to 215-1/2 fees in Devon and Cornwall. He was created Earl of Cornwall about April 1141. He and Robert, Earl of Leicester, were recognized by contemporaries as "the most powerful men in the kingdom." His wife, Mabel, fell into insanity in the 1140s. He witnessed a charter of Henry d'Oilly in the period, 1114-47. In 1153 he witnessed the agreement between King Stephen and Henry, Duke of Normandy [afterwards King Henry II]. He and Robert, Earl of Leicester, acted as intermediary between the king and Thomas Becket at Northampton in 1164. He played a major part in opposing the rebels of 1173-4 in England. REYNOLD FITZ ROY, Earl of Cornwall died 1 July 1175, allegedly at Chertsey, Surrey, and was buried at Reading, Berkshire. Child of Reynold Fitz Roy, Earl of Cornwall, by Mabel Fitz William: a. MAUD OF CORNWALL, married ROBERT II, Count of Meulan [see VERMANDOIS 7]. Illegitimate child of Reynold Fitz Roy, Earl of Cornwall, allegedly by Beatrice de Valle: a. HENRY FITZ COUNT, of Liskeard, Cornwall and King's Kerswell, Devon, Constable of Totnes Castle, 1209, Governor of Portchester Castle, 1211, Sheriff of Cornwall, 1215, 1217-20, Constable of Launceston Castle and Warden of the Stanneries, 1215. In 1194 he was granted the manors of Liskeard, Cornwall and Diptford and King's Kerswell, Devon by the king. In 1196 he witnessed the Torre Abbey foundation charter issued by his alleged step-father, Sir William Briwerre. In 1215 he had a grant of the county of Cornwall from King John, to farm until the realm should be at peace. The grant was renewed by King Henry III 7 Feb. 1216/7. He resigned the county to the king in 1220, when he took the cross. HENRY FITZ COUNT died a crusader in 1222.

- LifeSketch: Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiagenus, later known as Scipio Asiaticus, was a general and statesman of the Roman Republic. He was the son of Publius Cornelius Scipio and the younger brother of Scipio Africanus. He was elected consul in 190 BC, and later that year led (with his brother) the Roman forces to victory at the Battle of Magnesia. Although his career may be eclipsed by the shadow of his elder brother, Lucius's life is noteworthy in several respects. Lucius belonged to the patrician gens Cornelia, one of the most important gentes of the Republic, which counted more consulships than any other. He was the son of Publius, the consul of 218 who died against the Carthaginians at the Battle of the Upper Baetis in 211, and Pomponia, the daughter of Manius Pomponius Matho, consul in 233. Lucius also had an elder brother, Publius, better known as Scipio Africanus, who was the leading man of his generation and the vanquisher of Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in 202. Lucius was very close to his brother throughout his career, but had a conflicting relationship with his cousin Scipio Nasica since both of them were born circa 228, and therefore fought for the same magistracies at each stage of their cursus honorum. Lucius's wife is not known. Lucius served under his brother in Spain during the Second Punic War, defeating the Carthaginian commander Larus in a famous duel, and in 208 BC took a town on his own. In 206 BC, he was sent to the Senate with news of the victory in Spain. He was curule aedile in 195 BC, and praetor assigned to Sicily in 193 BC, helped by the influence of his brother. He was a candidate for consul in 191 BC, but lost to his first cousin Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica. He was finally elected consul in 190 BC with his co-consul being his brother's old second-in-command Gaius Laelius. According to Smith, the senate had not much confidence in his abilities, and it was only through the offer of his brother Africanus to accompany him as a legate that he obtained the province of Greece and the conduct of the war against Antiochus. He asserted himself against his brother by refusing the peace negotiated with the Aetolians by the latter. However, Publius insisted that as supreme commander at Magnesia Lucius should receive full credit for the victory over Antiochus. Upon his return to Rome, he celebrated a triumph (189 BC) and requested the title "Asiaticus" to signify his conquest of Western Asia Minor. According to some biblical commentators, Asiaticus is the "commander" referred to in Daniel 11:18, where it says that "a commander will put an end to his insolence" (NIV). Towards the end of his brother's life, Lucius was accused of misappropriating some of the funds collected from Antiochus as an indemnity. Publius, then Princeps Senatus, was outraged, going so far as to destroy the campaign's financial records while speaking in the Senate, as an act of defiance. After his brother's death (c. 183 BC), Lucius was imprisoned for this alleged theft. He was eventually pardoned by the tribune Tiberius Gracchus, although he was forced to sell his property and pay the state a lump sum. Roman historians report that he refused to accept any gifts or loans from his friends to pay the penalty. During his brother's lifetime in 185 BC, Lucius celebrated with great splendor the games which he had vowed in his war with Antiochus. Valerius of Antium related that he obtained the necessary money during an embassy on which he was sent after his condemnation, to settle the disputes between the kings Antiochus and Eumenes. He was a candidate for the censorship in 184 BC, but was defeated by an old enemy of his family, M. Porcius Cato, who deprived Lucius of his Public Horse at the review of the equites. Lucius had descendants, the Cornelii Scipiones Asiatici, the last of whom was the consul Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus who had an adoptive son. This son passed into obscurity after 82 BC.

- Father: Lucius CORNELIUS SCIPIO
- Birth: 260 BC, Rome, Rome, Lazio, Italy
- LifeSketch: Publius Cornelius Scipio was a general and statesman of the Roman Republic and the father of Scipio Africanus. A member of the Scipio stirps of the Cornelia gens, he served as consul in 218 BC, the first year of the Second Punic War. He sailed with his army from Pisa with the intention of confronting Hannibal in Hispania. Stopping at Massalia (today Marseille) to replenish his supplies, he was shocked to discover that Hannibal's army had moved from Hispania and was crossing the Rhône. Scipio disembarked his army and marched to confront Hannibal, who, by now, had moved on. Returning to the fleet, he entrusted the command of his army to his brother Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus and sent him off to Hispania to carry on with the originally intended mission. Scipio returned to Italy to take command of the troops fighting in Cisalpine Gaul. On his return to Italy, he advanced at once to meet Hannibal. In a sharp cavalry engagement near the Ticinus, a tributary of the Po river, he was defeated and severely wounded. In December of the same year, he again witnessed the complete defeat of the Roman army at the Trebia, when his fellow consul Tiberius Sempronius Longus allegedly insisted on fighting against his advice. Despite the military defeats, he still retained the confidence of the Roman people; his term of command was extended and the following year found him in Hispania with his brother Calvus, winning victories over the Carthaginians and strengthening Rome's position in the Iberian peninsula. He continued the Iberian campaigns until 211, when he was killed during the defeat of his army at the upper Baetis river by the Carthaginians and their Iberian allies under Indibilis and Mandonius. That same year, Calvus and his army were destroyed at Ilorci near Carthago Nova. The details of these campaigns are not completely known, but it seems that the ultimate defeat and death of the two Scipiones was due to the desertion of the Celtiberians, who were bribed by Hasdrubal Barca, Hannibal's brother. The son of Lucius Cornelius Scipio, he was the father of Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (the elder), and of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Asiaticus.

- Father: Lucius Aurelius COTTA
- Mother: Rutilia Rufa DIROMA
- Birth: 124 BC
- Occupation: Roman statesman, orator, priest, and Academic Skeptic
- Title Of Nobility: Consul of Rome
- LifeSketch: Gaius Aurelius Cotta (124–73 BC) was a Roman statesman, orator, priest, and Academic Skeptic; he is not to be confused with Gaius Aurelius Cotta who was twice Consul. Born in 124 BC, he was the uncle to Julius Caesar through Caesar's mother, Aurelia. In 92 BC he defended his uncle Publius Rutilius Rufus, who had been unjustly accused of extortion in Asia. He was on intimate terms with the tribune Marcus Livius Drusus, who was murdered in 91 BC, and in the same year was an unsuccessful candidate for the tribunate. Shortly afterwards he was prosecuted under the lex Varia, the law proposed by Quintus Varius Severus which was directed against all who had in any way supported the Italians against Rome, and, in order to avoid condemnation, went into voluntary exile. He did not return until 82 BC, during the dictatorship of Lucius Cornelius Sulla. In 75 BC he was consul, and excited the hostility of the optimates by carrying a law that abolished the Sullan disqualification of the tribunes of the plebs from holding higher magistracies; another law de judiciis privatis, of which nothing is known, was abrogated by his brother Lucius Cotta. Cotta obtained the province of Gaul, and was granted a triumph for some victory of which we possess no details; but on the very day before its celebration an old wound broke out, and he was injured suddenly. According to Cicero, Publius Sulpicius Rufus and Cotta were the best speakers of the young men of their time. Physically incapable of rising to passionate heights of oratory, Cotta's successes were chiefly due to his searching investigation of facts; he kept strictly to the essentials of the case and avoided all irrelevant digressions. His style was pure and simple. He is introduced by Cicero as an interlocutor in the De Oratore and De Natura Deorum (iii.), as a supporter of the principles of the New Academy. The fragments of Sallust contain the substance of a speech delivered by Cotta in order to calm the popular anger at a deficient corn supply

- LifeSketch: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucio_Aurelio_Cota Biography[edit] Cotta, hailing from a distinguished plebeian family, was the son of Lucius Aurelius Cotta who was consul in 119 BC, while his older brother Gaius Aurelius Cotta preceded him as consul in 75 BC. His younger brother Lucius Aurelius Cotta was consul in 65 BC. Aurelia Cotta, the mother of Julius Caesar, was his sister. Climbing the cursus honorum, it is assumed that he held the post of praetor in 77 BC.[1] Elected consul in 74 BC alongside Lucius Licinius Lucullus, he was soon concerned with the escalating situation in the east brought about by the acquisition of the new province of Bithynia and the subsequent renewal of conflict with King Mithridates VI of Pontus who had invaded Bithynia. Having received Bithynia as his proconsular command[2] he received command of a fleet to protect his province and was dispatched to the east towards the end of his period as consul.[3] The original plan was that Cotta should tie down Mithridates' fleet, while Lucullus attacked by land. Cotta was therefore ordered to station his fleet at Chalcedon, while Lucullus marched through Phrygia with the intention of invading Pontus. Lucullus had not advanced far when news came through that Mithridates had made a rapid march westward, attacked Cotta, and forced him to flee behind the walls of Chalcedon. Sixty-four Roman ships had been captured or burnt, and Cotta had lost three thousand men.[4] There Cotta was forced to remain until Lucullus could to come to his rescue.[5] Having made his way to Nicomedia, Cotta watched in frustration as Mithridates, learning that his fleet had been destroyed by Lucullus, escaped the city and sailed down the Bosporus to the town of Heraclea Pontica.[6] Joined by Lucullus at Nicomedia in 73 BC, Cotta was assigned the task of securing Lucullus' rear by taking the town of Heraclea, which Mithridates had reinforced with 4,000 troops.[7] After reducing the Pontic coast, Cotta began besieging Heraclea, which took him two years to complete, sacking the city in 71 BC.[8] During this time he was forced to dismiss one of his quaestors, P. Oppius, charging him with bribery and conspiracy.[9] Returning to Rome in 70 BC, Cotta was at first widely acclaimed for his victory at Heraclea.[10] However, around 67 BC he was accused of appropriation of war booty by Gaius Papirius Carbo. He was convicted of the offence and expelled from the Senate.[11] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Aurelius_Cotta_(consul_74_BC)

- Title Of Nobility: elected Roman Consul
- Title Of Nobility: Roman Senator
- LifeSketch: During his tenure in office as Consul, he, along with his colleague Lucius Caecilius Metellus Dalmaticus, opposed the passage of a law proposed by Gaius Marius, then a Plebeian tribune, which was meant to reform the configuration of the voting booths, thereby reducing the influence of the so-called Optimates. He asked the Senate to order Marius to present himself before them; when they did so, Marius responded by threatening to have Cotta imprisoned. After Cotta's colleague Metellus was imprisoned on Marius’ orders, Cotta and the Senate backed down and allowed the passage of Marius’ law. During his year in office, Cotta may have fought alongside Metellus in the campaign against the Dalmatians; the remaining sources are unclear if he actually participated or not. -- Wikiwand: Lucius Aurelius Cotta (consul 119 BC)

- LifeSketch: Aurelia (c. 120 – July 31, 54 BC) was the mother of Roman dictator Julius Caesar. Aurelia was a daughter of Rutilia and Lucius Aurelius Cotta or his brother, Marcus Aurelius Cotta. Her father was consul in 119 BC and her paternal grandfather of the same name was consul in 144 BC. The family of the Aurelii Cottae was prominent during the Roman Republican era. Her mother Rutilia, was a member of the gens Rutilia. They were of consular rank. Publius Rutilius Rufus was her maternal uncle. Three of her brothers were consuls: Gaius Aurelius Cotta in 75 BC, Marcus Aurelius Cotta in 74 BC and Lucius Aurelius Cotta in 65 BC. Aurelia married a praetor Gaius Julius Caesar. Her husband died 85 – 84 BC. Their children were: . Julia Major (102 - ? BC), wife of Pinarius and grandmother of Lucius Pinarius; . Julia Minor (101 – 51 BC), wife of Marcus Atius and grandmother of emperor Augustus; . Gaius Julius Caesar (100 – 44 BC), the Dictator perpetuo The historian Tacitus considered her an ideal Roman matron and thought highly of her, because she offered her children the best opportunities of education. Plutarch described her as a woman of discretion. Highly intelligent, independent and renowned for her beauty and common sense, Aurelia was held in high regard throughout Rome. Aurelia and her family were very influential in her son’s upbringing and security. Her husband, the elder Gaius Caesar, was often away, so the task of raising their son fell mostly on Aurelia's shoulders. When the younger Caesar was about 18, he was ordered by the then dictator of Rome, Lucius Cornelius Sulla, to divorce his young wife Cornelia Cinna, daughter of Lucius Cornelius Cinna who had supported Sulla's archenemy Marius. Young Caesar firmly refused, and by so doing, put himself at great risk from Sulla. Aurelia became involved in the petition to save her son, defending him along with her brother Gaius Cotta. After Cornelia's death in childbirth, Aurelia raised her young granddaughter Julia in her stead and presided as mistress over her son's households. Caesar subsequently married Pompeia Sulla, granddaughter of Sulla. In 62 BC, during the Bona Dea festival held at Caesar’s house, one of Cornelia's maid discovered that Publius Clodius had infiltrated the house while disguising as a woman, in order to start or continue an affair with her second daughter-in-law Pompeia. The two may have had certain improper relations before, but was subdued by Aurelia's close watch upon the women's residence. Clodius was later charged with the crime of sacrilege by Lucius Lentulus since his trespass caused the interruption of the sacrifice. Aurelia later appeared as a witness during the trial, along with Julia, testifying that she had ordered Clodius to leave.
