- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Flavius Valens (328 – 9 August 378) was Roman emperor from 364 to 378. He was the younger brother of the emperor Valentinian I, who gave Valens the eastern half of the Roman Empire to rule. Before 364, Valens had a largely unremarkable military career. In 378, Valens was defeated and killed at the Battle of Adrianople against the invading Goths, which astonished contemporaries and marked the beginning of barbarian encroachment into Roman territory. As emperor Valens continually faced threats both internal and external.[4] He defeated, after some dithering, the usurper Procopius in 366, and campaigned against the Goths across the Danube in 367 and 369. In the following years, Valens focused on the eastern frontier, where he faced the perennial threat of Persia, particularly in Armenia, as well as additional conflicts with the Saracens and Isaurians. Domestically, he inaugurated the Aqueduct of Valens in Constantinople, which was longer than all the aqueducts of Rome. In 376–77, the Gothic War broke out, following a mismanaged attempt to settle the Goths in the Balkans. Valens returned from the east to fight the Goths in person, but lack of coordination with his nephew, the western emperor Gratian (Valentinian I's son), as well as poor battle tactics, led to Valens and much of the eastern Roman army dying at a battle near Adrianople in 378. Although Valens is described as indecisive, impressionable, a mediocre general and overall "utterly undistinguished", he was also a conscientious and capable administrator,[5] and a notable achievement of his was to significantly relieve the burden of taxation on the population.[6] At the same time, his suspicious and fearful disposition, and excessive concern for personal safety, resulted in numerous treason trials and executions, which heavily stained his reputation. Valens was a fanatic Arian Christian – the last Roman emperor to profess this denomination – and discriminated against trinitarian Christians while interfering little in the affairs of the pagans.[7][6][8] Valens and his brother Valentinian were both born in Cibalae (Vinkovci) in Pannonia Secunda, into an Illyrian family in 328 and 321 respectively.[9][10] Gratianus Funarius was from Cibalae (Vinkovci) in Pannonia and had become a senior officer in the Roman army and comes Africae.[11] He and his brother had grown up on estates purchased by their father Gratianus in Africa and Britain.[12] Valens served in the protectores domestici under the emperors Julian (r. 361–363) and Jovian (r. 361–363). According to the 5th-century Greek historian Socrates Scholasticus, while serving as a protector domesticus, Valens refused pressure to offer sacrifice in ancient Roman religion during the reign of the pagan emperor Julian.[10] Valens's younger brother Valentinian joined the protectores, rising to tribunus in 357.[11] Valentinian served in Gaul and in Mesopotamia in the reign of Constantius II (r. 337–361).[11] According to the Chronicle of Jerome and the Chronicon Paschale, Valens's eldest nephew Gratian was born in 359 at Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica) to Valentinian's wife Marina Severa.[13][14] In late 364, the reigning emperor Jovian, who having been a protector domesticus under Constantius II and Julian and a primicerius domesticorum from 363, had on 27 June 363 been acclaimed augustus by the army at Maranga on the Tigris during Julian's Persian War, was hastening to Constantinople to secure his claim to the purple.[15] According to one of Themistius's orations, on 1 January 364 Jovian staged a consular entry into Ancyra (Ankara) for the beginning of his first consulship, an honour he shared with his son Varronianus.[15] He died during a stop at Dadastana.[15] The emperor died on 17 February according to the Latin historian Eutropius, but on the 19 February according to the According to Eutropius, Jovian was deified by consecratio as Latin: Divus Iovianus, lit. 'the Divine Valens'.[16] Valentinian, a tribunus scholae secundiae scutariorum, owed his advancement to the deceased.[17] In the history written by Latin historian Ammianus Marcellinus, Valentinian was summoned to Nicaea by a council of military and civil officials who acclaimed him augustus.[11] According to the Consularia Constantinopolitana and the Chronicon Paschale, the date of his elevation was 25 February 364.[18] According to the 5th-century Greek historian Sozomen, Valentinian was a Nicene Christian.[11] Valens, on the other hand, was an Arian Christian (a "Homoean").[10] Accession Valentinian appointed his brother Valens tribunus stabulorum (or stabuli) on 1 March 364 and both brothers became Roman consul for the first time.[11][16] According to the Consularia Constantinopolitana, Valentinian raised his brother Valens to be his co-augustus on 28 March 364, at Constantinople.[11][10][16] He was acclaimed augustus on 26 February, 364. It was the general opinion that Valentinian needed help to handle the cumbersome administration, civil and military, of the large and unwieldy empire, and, on 28 March of the same year, at the express demand of the soldiers for a second augustus, he selected his brother Valens as co-emperor at the Hebdomon, before the Constantinian Walls.[19][20] Early reign Both emperors were briefly ill, delaying them in Constantinople, but as soon as they recovered, the two augusti travelled together through Adrianople and Naissus to Mediana, where they divided their territories. Valentinian then went on to the West, where the Alemannic wars required his immediate attention.[21][22] Valens began his consulship in Constantinople and Valentinian took up his consulship in Mediolanum (Milan).[11][16] Valens's wife Domnica may have become augusta in 364.[16] Valens obtained the eastern half of the Empire: Greece, the Balkans, Egypt, Anatolia and the Levant as far as the border with the Sasanian Empire. Valens was back in his capital of Constantinople by December 364. Valens inherited the eastern portion of an empire that had recently retreated from most of its holdings in Mesopotamia and Armenia because of a treaty that his predecessor Jovian had made with Shapur II of the Sasanian Empire. Valens's first priority after the winter of 365 was to move east in hopes of shoring up the situation.[citation needed] Usurpation of Procopius: September 365–May 366 With Valens absent from the imperial city, Procopius, a distant relative of Julian, the last emperor of the Constantinian dynasty, was acclaimed augustus on 28 September 365.[16] Valens was at Caesarea in Cappadocia (Kayseri) when he discovered this. According to Ammianus Marcellinus, Procopius was from Cilicia.[23] Under Constantius II (r. 337–361), Procopius had been tribunus et notarius from 358, and under Julian he had become comes primi ordinis.[16] According to the 5th-century Greek historian Zosimus, Procopius may have been intended as Julian's successor.[23] Procopius had commanded an auxiliary northern contingent of his relative's army during the Persian expedition and had not been present when Jovian was named his successor in the camp beyond the Tigris.[24] According to the Latin historian Ammianus Marcellinus, in the brief reign of Jovian (r. 363–364) Procopius had withdrawn from office and lived as a private citizen.[16] Though Jovian, aside from depriving him of his command, took no further measures against this potential rival, Procopius fell immediately under the suspicion of Valentinian upon the latter's election.[24] As part of his claim to legitimacy Procopius ensured he was always accompanied by the posthumous daughter of Constantius II, Constantia, still a child, and her mother Faustina, the dowager empress.[25] Constantia had been born after her father's death to Faustina, the late emperor's third wife.[26][27] Procopius was unpopular, being compelled to increase taxes.[23] Valens' dismissal shortly before of Julian's popular minister Sallustius contributed to the general disaffection and to the acceptability of a revolution.[28] Valens, meanwhile, faltered. When news arrived that Procopius had revolted, Valens considered abdication and perhaps even suicide. Even after he steadied his resolve to fight, Valens's efforts to forestall Procopius were hampered by the fact that most of his troops had already crossed the Cilician gates into Syria when he learned of the revolt. Procopius quickly gained control of the provinces of Asia and Bithynia, winning increasing support for the insurrection. However, Valens recovered, reappointed Sallustius, and dispatched the available legions under veteran generals, Flavius Arinthaeus and Arbitio, to march on Procopius.[29] Valens sent an army against Procopius, but according to Ammianus Marcellinus, before they reached Constantinople they defected to Procopius, whose use of his Constantinian hostages had met with some success.[30][23] According to Ammianus Marcellinus and the later Greek historians Socrates Scholasticus and Sozomen, Valens eventually prevailed after eight months and had Procopius executed and subjected to damnatio memoriae on the 28 May 366, after defeating his forces at the Battle of Thyatira and again at the Battle of Nacoleia at Nacoleia (Seyitgazi) on 27 May.[16][23] On both occasions, Procopius was deserted by his own following in fear of their adversaries' formidable commanders. Procopius was delivered to justice by members of his own escort, and executed on 27 May.[31] According to Ammianus Marcellinus, a relative of Procopius's, a former protector domesticus named Marcellus, was proclaimed emperor in Procopius's place in Chalcedon, but according to Zosimus he was swiftly captured and executed.[16] Valens then had to face the threat from the Sasanian Empire and the Goths.[10]....article continues see notes

- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Licinius II depicted in armour holding a spear and an orb surmounted by a victory. The inscription "Licinius iunior nobilissimus Caesar" translates as 'Licinius Junior Most Noble Caesar' ( see portrait) Licinius II or Licinius the Younger (/lɪˈsɪniəs/, Classical Latin pronunciation lɪˈkɪ.ni.ʊs; full name, Valerius Licinianus Licinius; c. 315 – c. 326) was the son of the Roman emperor Licinius. Life[edit] On the first of March 317, he was raised to the rank of Caesar at the age of 20 months, nominally serving as such in the eastern empire until 324, while his father was Augustus. His mother was Licinius' wife Flavia Julia Constantia, who was the half-sister of Constantine I. After his defeat by Constantine at the Battle of Chrysopolis (18 September 324), Licinius the elder was initially spared and placed in captivity at Thessalonica. However, within a year Constantine seems to have regretted his leniency and the former Emperor was hanged. Immediately after his father's defeat and capitulation the younger Licinius was stripped of his title of Caesar.[1] The younger Licinius, who was Constantine's nephew, also fell victim to the emperor's suspicions and was killed, in Pola, probably in the context of the execution of Crispus in 326.[2] Other reports relate that Licinius the Younger was forced into slavery in the imperial textile factories in Africa, where a "son of Licinianus" is noted in an imperial rescript dated 336. However, the rescript makes it clear that the "son of Licinianus" referred to was not Licinius II, as the text contains a directive that the textile worker be reduced to the slave status of his birth. No son of Constantine's sister would have been referred to in this manner, therefore, this "son of Licinianus" must have been the illegitimate son of the emperor by a woman of servile status.[3]

- LifeSketch: History of the Amali People -from Wikipedia The Amali – also called Amals, Amalings or Amalungs – were a leading dynasty of the Goths, a Germanic people who confronted the Roman Empire during the decline of the Western Roman Empire.[1] They eventually became the royal house of the Ostrogoths and founded the Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy.[2] Origin The Amal clan was claimed to have descended from the divine.[3] Jordanes accounts Gothic origins as follows: "Now the first of these heroes, as they themselves relate in their legends, was Gapt, who begat Hulmul. And Hulmul begat Augis; and Augis begat him who was called Amal, from whom the name of the Amali comes. Athal begat Achiulf and Oduulf. Now Achiulf begat Ansila and Ediulf, Vultuulf and Ermanaric."[4] Gapt or Gaut is the Scandinavian god of war. Hulmul or Humli-Hulmul, is considered the divine father of the Danish people.[3] Ermanaric (also referred to as Ermanaricus or Hermanaric), is identified as an Amali king who ruled territories in modern Ukraine. Ermanaric signals the tenth generation, and the first generation to be backed by historical record.[3] History The Amali remained a prominent family as the Greuthungi evolved into the Visigoths. The Amali became vassals of the Huns and moved west. In 453, the Ostrogoths regained their independence under the Amali, Theodemir. According to Jordanes, "Vultuulf begat Valaravans and Valaravans begat Vinitharius. Vinitharius moreover begat Vandalarius; Vandalarius begat Theodemir and Valamir and Vidimer."[4] Theodemir's son, Theoderic the Great, founded the Ostrogothic Kingdom. A separate branch of the family were members of the Visigoths. Sigeric, a brief usurper to the Visigothic throne in 415, may have been a member of the Amali. Another Visigoth, Eutharic, reunited the branches of the family by marrying Theoderic's daughter Amalasuntha. Jordanes states "Hermanaric, the son of Achiulf, begat Hunimund, and Hunimund begat Thorismud. Now Thorismud begat Beremud, Beremud begat Veteric, and Veteric likewise begat Eutharic." The last attested member of the Amali house was Theodegisclus, son of Theodahad. In Literature In the Nibelungenlied and some other medieval German epic poems, the followers of Dietrich von Bern are referred to as 'Amelungen'. In other cases, Amelung is reinterpreted as the name of one of Dietrich's ancestors. The Kaiserchronik also refers to Dietrich/Theoderic's family as the 'Amelungen', and in a letter of bishop Meinhard von Bamberg, as well as the Annals of Quedlinburg, 'Amulungum'/'Amelung' ("the Amelung") is used to refer to Dietrich himself. This shows that the family's legacy was remembered in oral tradition far into the Middle Ages, long after any stories about Amal himself had ceased to circulate. Cassiodorus' Origo Gothica describes the Goths moving to the Black Sea, where they split into two factions, the Amali, who would later become the Ostrogoths, and the Balthi, who become the Visigoths. Both the Amali and the Balthi are recalled as families of "kings and heroes."[3] However, even before Cassiodorus' time, the tradition of the Amal appeared to be still popular. This is shown in the naming of the royals, like Theodoric's daughters, Ostrogotho and Amalasuintha, and his sister, Amalafrida, who were all given Amal names.[3]

- Died after being defeated by the Romans: (Date and Place unknown)
Iordanes names "Thiudemer et Valamir et Vidimir" as the sons of Vandilarius[62]. King of the Ostrogoths in Pannonia, subordinate to his brother Valamir, he ruled over the central part of their domain which covered upper Slavonia. Iordanes names "Theodemir" when recording that he succeeded his brother "Valamero rege Gothorum" together with "Vidimero fratre et filio Theodorico"[63]. When the Ostrogoths left Pannonia in [473], Vidimir went into Italy where he suffered several defeats. a) VIDIMIR. Iordanes records that "Vidimero cum Vidimero filio" were sent to "partes Hesperias" by Theodemir[64]. After his father's death, Emperor Glycerius sent Vidimir and his contingent of Pannonian Ostrogoths to Gaul, where he settled in the Limousin[65].

- Father: Wacho König der Langobarden
- Mother: Austrigusa Königin der Langobarden
- Birth: ABT 530, Pannonia
- LifeSketch: Her Husband was Garibald I (also Garivald; Latin: Garibaldus; born 540) was Duke (or King) of Bavaria from 555 until 591.[1] He was the head of the Agilolfings, and the ancestor of the Bavarian dynasty that ruled the Kingdom of the Lombards.
- Title (Nobility): Princess of The Lombards
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - Waldrada (also Vuldetrada) (531–572), wife (firstly) of Theudebald, King of Austrasia (ruled 548–555), reputed mistress (secondly) of Chlothar I, King of the Franks (ruled until 561), was the daughter of Wacho, King of the Lombards (ruled ca. 510–539) and his second wife called Austrigusa or Ostrogotha, a Gepid. The Origo Gentis Langobardorum names "Wisigarda…secundæ Walderada" as the two daughters of Wacho and his second wife, specifying that Waldrada married "Scusuald regis Francorum" and later "Garipald".[1] The Historia Langobardorum names "Waldrada" as Wacho's second daughter by his second wife, specifying that she married "Chusubald rex Francorum".[2] Paulus Diaconus names "Wisigarda…[et] secunda Walderada" as the two daughters of King Wacho & his second wife, specifying that Walderada married "Cusupald alio regi Francorum" and later "Garipald".[3] Gregory of Tours names Vuldetrada as the wife of King Theodebald.[4] Herimannus names "Wanderadam" wife of "Theodpaldus rex Francorum" when recording her second marriage to "Lotharius rex patris eius Theodeberti patruus".[5] According to Gregory of Tours, King Clotaire "began to have intercourse" with the widow of King Theodebald, before "the bishops complained and he handed her over to Garivald Duke of Bavaria",[6] which apparently implies that King Clotaire did not marry Waldrada.

- Father: Modares
- Birth: ABT 385, Kingdom of the Visigoths, Roman Empire
- Also known as: Wallia
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Visigoths (Predecessor: Sigeric Successor; Theodoric I)
- Ruling Dynasty: Balti dynasty: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Walia[Wallia] was king of the Visigoths from 415 to 418, earning a reputation as a great warrior and prudent ruler. He was elected to the throne after Athaulf and then Sigeric were assassinated in 415. Early on, he made peace with Emperor Honorius and accepted a treaty with the Roman Empire. He also returned Honorius' sister Galla Placidia to him. As gains from these arrangements, Wallia was granted Aquitaine in 417 as a region where the Visigoths would be based as official allies or "foederati." He established his court in Toulouse, which became the Visigothic capital for the rest of the fifth century. In 418 he honored the alliance by invading Hispania, where his army destroyed the Siling Vandals and so reduced the numbers of Alans living there that the survivors placed themselves under the rule of Gunderic, king of the Asding Vandals. Some historical sources say that he was related to Alaric only by marriage. He was succeeded by Alaric's illegitimate son or son-in-law Theodoric. Wallia's daughter married Rechila, King of the Suevi, and was the mother of Ricimer and the mother-in-law of Gundowech, King of the Burgundians. Wallia is sometimes assumed to have been the historical model for the legendary figure of Walter of Aquitaine. -- from Wikiwand: Wallia

- Clan Name: House of Lethings
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Walthari (also Waltheri, Latin: Waltharius)[1] son of Wacho from his third wife Silinga, was a king of the Lombards from 539 to 546. He was an infant king, and the rule was administered by Audoin. Audoin probably killed Waltari before he reached manhood, in order to gain the throne for himself in ca. 546, and led the Lombards into Pannonia.[2] Procopius says he died of disease. He was the last of the Lething Dynasty.

- LifeSketch: Welf I (or Hwelf; died about 825) is the first documented ancestor of the Elder House of Welf. He is mentioned as a count (comes) in the Frankish lands of Bavaria. Life Welf originated from a distinguished dynasty of Franconian nobles. He is mentioned only once: on the occasion of the wedding of his daughter Judith with Emperor Louis the Pious in 819 at Aachen. His son Conrad later appeared as a dux (duke) in Alamannia and achieved a powerful position in the Upper Swabian estates he possibly had inherited from his mother Hedwig (Heilwig). His family became politically powerful when Louis the Pious chose his oldest daughter as his 2nd wife upon the death of his consort Ermengarde of Hesbaye. Though Welf himself never became publicly prominent, his family became interwoven with the Carolingian dynasty, as his oldest daughter Judith married Emperor Louis the Pious, and his youngest married the emperors son, Prince Louis the German. His grandchildren would rule both France (Charles the Bald) and Germany (Carloman of Bavaria, Louis the Younger and Charles the Fat). Marriage and issue Welf married Hedwig (Heilwig), daughter of the Saxon count Isambart; Hedwig later became abbess of Chelles. The couple had the following children: 1. Judith (c.797- 843), married to Emperor Louis the Pious, Roman Empress and Frankish Queen; 2. Conrad (c.800-864), Count of Auxerre, ancestor of the Welf kings of Burgundy; 3. Rudolph (c.802-866), Count of Ponthieu; 4. Hemma (c.803-876), Frankish Queen, married to King Louis the German, son of Emperor Louis the Pious. 5. possibly Mathilda d'Andech von Altdorf

- Also known as: Comte Wido ou Gui de Nantes
- Title Of Nobility: Prefect of the Breton Marches
- Affiliation: WIDONEN (LAMBERTINER)
- kaiserlicher Missus in der Touraine.: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Count Wido is the descendant and successor of the property of Warnharius, who founded the Hornbach monastery in the Palatinate around 742; Also descendants of Warnharius are Willigart (828 donor from Wilgartswiesen (Palatinate)) and her Nepos Warnharius; Werner, the progenitor of the Salier family, is also one of the successors of the property and probably also one of the descendants of Warnharius ’. Wido appears for the first time together with the abbot Fulrad of Saint-Denis - still in the service of King Pippin the Younger († 768) - in Alsace and in Ortenau. In 782, under pressure from Charlemagne, he had to give up his claims that he had raised against the Mettlach monastery that his father had brought into his possession. In 796 he and his brother Warnharius appear as the owners of the Hornbach monastery. He received rule over Nantes and the Breton Mark before 799, at the same time his brother Frodoald (Hrodolt) was subordinate to him as Count of Vannes; in the period after that he seems to have largely subjugated Brittany - at least for a short time. A member of the noble family of the WIDONEN, was apparently in the service of King Pippin, initially with Abbot Fulrad von St-Denis in Alsace and in the Ortenau. Installed in 799 by KARL THE GREAT as prefect of the Breton Mark, he subjugated Brittany to the Frankish Empire. He was in close contact with Alcuin, who praised him in CHARLES THE GREAT as "vir perfectus et iudex incorruptus" and dedicated his "Liber de virtutibus et vitiis" to him. In the Breton Mark, his son Lambert has been a count since 806 and a prefect from 818. - Before and after 800 a particularly capable Wido appears, like the famous Hruodland as comes ac praefectus Britanni limitis, that is, Margrave of Brittany. The fact that a SALIER was entrusted with the responsible, influential office of a margrave speaks for the great importance of his family. His position was extremely difficult. In 799 Wido completely defeated the Bretons and brought the arms of the Celtic chiefs with their names engraved to the Emperor KARL to Worms as a sign of victory. After his victory, Wido took his seat in Vannes, which had been the focal point of the battle. The document book of the Redon Monastery has the significant date "regnante Jarnhitin et Wido comite" in a document from 814, thus trying to combine the pseudo-rule of the Breton chief with the official activity of Wido. This Margrave Wido was, which shows the warlike high aristocrats from the intellectual side, in close contact with the greatest scholar of his time, Alkuin, whose lectures in the "court school" he might have heard. At Wido's "honorable" request, Alcuin wrote a treatise on the main vices and virtues for the warrior, intended as a comforting manual for the count, ready at any time, to show him the way to the "summit of perfection". This font was initially only intended for Wido, the Alcuin in the dedication letter as "dearly beloved son" and Ew. Liebden ", but was copied a lot and is still preserved in quite a few manuscripts from the 9th and 10th centuries. Alcuin's very favorable judgment of Wido, whom he praised as a" perfect man, incorruptible judge and loyal messenger ", illuminates Alcuin's letter to KARL DEN GROSSEN from 801/02. With the Hornbach abbot and convent, Wido, who remained in the closest relationship with the Hornbach family monastery, turned to Archbishop Riculf of Mainz with a church request in the years 803 to 813. As early as 796 he had given gifts to the monastery. He died in 814. This capable Margrave Wido, so highly valued by Alcuin, is the earliest great, versatile, warlike and intellectually outstanding personality among the SALIERN, who at the same time proves her personal and at the same time the general connection between West and East Franconia.

He was given the abbey of Mettlach in Lotharingia in 840, when the Emperor Louis the Pious died. Guy married Ida (Itta or Itana), daughter of Sico of Benevento. Their sons were Lambert I and Guy III. In 843, he interfered in the Beneventan civil war on the side of his brother-in-law Siconulf. He acted as arbiter several times for high fees, but only Lothair's successor, the Emperor Louis II, could end the strife. In 846, he alone succeeded in driving the Saracens out of Latium after their sack of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome. In 858, he supported Adhemar of Salerno against the pretended Count of Capua, Lando I. By his intervention he secured the Liri Valley, with Sora and Arpino taken from the count's brother Landenulf of Teano. From Wikipedia ******************* Ilustre guerreiro. Cf. - Birth: ABT 840, Spoleto, Perugia, Umbria, Italy
- Also known as: Guido III - Conde de Camerino
- Also known as: WIDO VON SPOLETO
- Title Of Nobility: Margrave of Camerino
- LifeSketch: Guy III of Spoleto (died 12 December 894) was the margrave of Camerino from 880 and then duke of Spoleto and Camerino from 883. He was crowned king of Italy in 889 and emperor in 891. He died in 894 while fighting for control of the Italian Peninsula. Guy was married to Ageltrude, daughter of Adelchis of Benevento, who bore him a son named Lambert. Guy was the second son of Guy I of Spoleto and Itta, daughter of Sico of Benevento. Guy I was the son of Lambert I of Nantes and his second wife, Adelaide of Lombardy, who was a daughter of Charlemagne's second eldest son, Pepin of Italy. In 842, the former Duchy of Spoleto, which had been donated to the Papacy by Charlemagne, was resurrected by the Franks to be held against Byzantine catapans to the south, as a Frankish border territory by a dependent margrave. Consequently, Guy’s family had been important players in Italian politics since the early ninth century. Although in 876 Guy and his elder brother, Lambert, Duke of Spoleto, had been commissioned by Charles the Bald to accompany Pope John VIII to Naples to break up the alliances that many of the southern Lombard states had made with the Saracens, the family’s interests were generally hostile to the papacy, a policy that Guy initially followed. With Lambert’s death in 880, he bequeathed to Guy the march of Camerino, and in 882 Guy supported his nephew’s (Guy II of Spoleto) invasion of the Papal States. This brought him into conflict with the Emperor Charles the Fat, and in 882, at an assembly at Verona, the emperor dispossessed him of his fiefs, together with a significant number of other important, but minor, Italian nobles. Rising up in rebellion, Guy allied himself with the neighbouring Saracens and began acquiring further territory. At this point, at a diet at Ravenna, the emperor declared him guilty of high treason, and Berengar of Friuli was commanded to strip him of his fief by force. In 883, Guy inherited his nephew's title of Spoleto and reunited the dukedom, henceforth as the "Duchy of Spoleto and Camerino" bearing the title of dux et marchio, and by the end of 884, Emperor Charles III was forced to make peace with Guy, where he formally recovered his titles. Then in 885, he fought his occasional allies, the Saracens of the Garigliano. After the deposition of Charles the Fat in 887, by virtue of being a relative of Archbishop Fulk of Rheims, he had hopes of being crowned king of West Francia, and in fact travelled as far as Langres, where the bishop crowned him as such. But because of Odo's coronation that year (888), he turned and went back with designs on the crown of Italy and the emperorship. Guy of Spoleto was opposed by Berengar of Friuli for the Iron Crown of Lombardy. Although Berengar had the advantage of being allied with the Carolingian family and of having been crowned as king of Italy in 887, from 888 Guy was closer to Rome, and had already allied himself with Pope Stephen V, who had described Guy “as his only son”. Fighting between the rival contenders began, and it was Guy who had himself proclaimed king of Italy in a diet held at Pavia at the end of the year 888. He was formally crowned King of Italy by Pope Stephen V in 889, and this was followed by his coronation as Roman Emperor on 21 February 891, together with the crowning of his son Lambert II as King of Italy. The situation in Italy began to deteriorate with the election of a new pope, Formosus, in 891. Distrustful of Guy, he began to look elsewhere for support against the emperor, as Guy found it increasingly difficult to end the threat of Berengar who still held out in his Duchy of Friuli. To bolster his overall position, at Ravenna on 30 April 892, Guy forced Pope Formosus to crown Lambert as co-emperor. The pope therefore took the next opportunity to oppose Guy by supporting Arnulf of Carinthia for the Italian and imperial titles.[citation needed] In 893, Formosus invited Arnulf to come to Trento to overthrow Guy and be crowned himself. Arnulf instead sent his son Zwentibold with an army to join Berengar, the deposed king, and march on Trento. Their joint army surrounded Trento, but Guy probably bribed them to leave him unmolested. The following year, they defeated Guy at Bergamo and took Trento and Milan. Berengar was recognised as king and a vassal of Arnulf. Zwentibold returned to Germany, as fever had wreaked havoc on the German armies. Guy retreated in order to regroup at a fortified place on the Taro and died there suddenly in late autumn, leaving his son under the tutelage of his wife. Both would contest the throne with Berengar and Arnulf.

- Also known as: King Wihtred of Kent
- Birth:: 660, Kent, England, United Kingdom
- Title Of Nobility: King of Kent, BET 690 AND 725, Kingdom of Kent, Anglia
- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy WIHTRED ([670]-23 Apr 725). Bede records that "Uictred…filius Ecgberti" was unable to succeed immediately on the death of "Edric filius Ecgberti" because "kings of doubtful title, foreigners, for some time wasted the kingdom", before he succeeded in imposing his rule[365]. He was chosen as WIHTRED King of Kent in 690 after the period of chaos which followed the invasion of Kent by Cædwalla King of Wessex. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records that the continuing dispute with Wessex which followed the murder of Mul, brother of King Cædwalla, was settled by payment of "thirty thousands" (the unit of currency is not named) compensation by the Kentishmen to Ine King of Wessex in 694[366]. "Uuihtredus rex Cantie" made a joint grant of land at Thanet, Kent to Æbba abbess of Minster-in-Thanet with "Kinigitha regina coniuge mea" by charter dated 694[367]. King Wihtred issued a legal code in an assembly of nobles and clergy in 695, relating mainly to matters of ecclesiastical interest including complete exemption from taxation for the church, attributed by Stenton to the powerful influence of Berhtwald (previously abbot of Reculver) who was chosen to succeed Theodore as archbishop of Canterbury 1 Jul 692[368]. "Wihtredus rex Cantie" and his wife Æthelburga granted land at Littlebourne, Kent to St Augustine by charter dated [696 or Mar 711] and "Wihtredus rex Cantuariorum" and his wife Æthelburga granted land to "Eabbe abbatissa" by charter dated 697[369]. Finally, "Whytredus rex Cantie" and "Werburga regina" jointly made land grants in Kent dated 699[370]. This rapid succession of charters in which King Wihtred names three different queens suggests the possibility that his marriages were polygamous, although as pointed out below the name of his third wife may have been a misreading for Æthelburga. Bede records the death "IX Kal Mai" in 725 of "Uictred filius Ecgberti rex Cantuariorum" after reigning for 34 years and one half[371]. m firstly KINIGITHA, daughter of ---. "Kinigitha regina coniuge mea" made a joint grant of land at Thanet, Kent with "Uuihtredus rex Cantie" dated 694367. m secondly ÆTHELBURGA, daughter of ---. "Adelburga coniunx mea" and "Æthilburgæ reginæ" subscribed two charters of "Wihtredus rex Cantie" dated 696 and 697369. m thirdly WERBURGA, daughter of ---. "Whytredus rex Cantie" and "Werburga regina" made land grants in Kent dated 699370. It is possible that the name "Werburga" was a copyist's error for "Æthelburga". King Wihtred & his [first/second/third] wife had two children:
- Death: 23 APR 725, Kent, Kent, Inglaterra
- Burial: 725, St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, England
