His Will, which is located at the county seat of Wells, was signed the 11th of December 1625, and it was probated in February of 1626. In this Will he names his children, with son William as executor and residuary legatee and sons-in-law as overseers. Also he mention’s his son JOHN with the clause “if living.” Thus, son JOHN must have been gone from the family for sometime and possibly out of the country. William Holbrook’s wife is believed to be Edith ???, who’s grave is located at the same Church with the date of June 1612. William and Edith (???) Holbrook had seven children. CHILDREN 1. Joan Holbrook - Born about 1587. Married 1st on 3 June 1605, to Neckolas Bennett, at St. John’s Church in Glastonbury. Bennett was buried 22 March 1606. 2nd to Randall Gylles on 14 June 1609/10. 2. Elizabeth Holbrook - Born about 1590. Married on 12 September 1611, to Thomas Tylye. 3. Thomas Holbrook - Born 1594. Married to Jane Powyes on 12 September 1616. Was living at Broadway, Somersetshire, in 1634. He and fam- ily sailed on the ship Hopewell to the Massachusetts Bay Colony and settled at Weymouth. 4. John Holbrook - Born about 1595 at Glastonbury. Married Sarah ??? before 1620. Emi- grated to Massachusetts Bay Colony around 1625. Died before 1644. [In memories section "Tyler,Elkins & Allied Families; Holbrook p. 281, 282" "He seems to have left home before his father made his will and to have been out of touch with his family"] John's Father's will- "Also he mention’s his son JOHN with the clause “if living.” Thus, son JOHN must have been gone from the family for sometime and possibly out of the country. 5. Rebecca Holbrook - Born about 1597. Married on 19 May 1617, to Clement Weaver (born about 1592) at Glastonbury. Emigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony and settled at Weymouth next door to her brother Thomas. 6. William Holbrook - Born about 1600. A daughter of his was baptized at St. John’s Church at Glastonbury on 29 June 1629/30. 7. Basil Holbrook - Was married on 27 January 1625/26, to Philip Wrinkmore, at the same church. SOURCES 1 A. The marriage records of his brothers and sisters are found in the Parish Register of St. John’s Church, but his marriage is not recorded there. It is evident that lie left Glastonbury for broader fields before or about the time of reaching majority. As further proof in 1625 (which was several years after his marriage) although upon most friendly terms, his father did not know whether he was living or dead. This is shown by William Holbrook's will, signed in Glastonbury, December it, 1625, and in which provision was made for grandsons, Thomas Holbrook Jr.; Edmund Tylye; and Clement Weaver Jr., to have, “My grounds att yee moore geate together with ye leases and Conveyances thereof' “if my son John Holbrook be dead but “if he be livinge” John to have this land. The testator died in less than two months after signing his will and it is extremely doubtful that he saw his son, John Holbrook before he died. It is hard to believe that John Holbrook could have been in his native England, and yet so thoroughly out of touch with his family. It is reasonable to assume therefore, that John Holbrook had already emigrated from England prior to 1625. Other than in Plymouth Colony, New England, records are very incomplete prior to 1630. The Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony Church Records disappeared with the removal of Mr. Newman in 1644; however, it is known that John Holbrook’s fourth child was born there in 1627, and there is every reason to believe that he was in Weymouth or at least in New England three years earlier. Settlements at Dorchester and Weymouth, Massachusetts were attempted in 1622 and in 1624 a colony of substantial settlers arrived. It is probable that John Holbrook came to New England with the Puritans of the latter group, for where else could he and his family have been in 1625? He was in Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635 and in 1640 he was made freeman there. In the same year his name appeared in Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony Records and in Weymouth Town Records, under circumstances which show that he was not a newcomer to America. John Holbrook settled in that part of Weymouth known as “Old Spain”. It was undoubtedly chosen for its harbor and peninsular formation, which was ideal for confining cattle. The Holbrooks of the second generation in America all began life in good circumstances, which shows that for his day, John Holbrook, as well as his brother Thomas, had a comfortable fortune. Died, probably before 1644. Married, Sarah in England. She died in Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, November 14, 1643. Issue of John and Sarah Holbrook: 1. Richard, of whom below. 2. William, born in England circa 1620. Freeman Massachu¬ setts Bay Colony, May 10, 1643. “William Holbrook dismissed from Dorchester Massachusetts Church February 16, 1661, to join First Church of Milford.” Died at Mil* ford, Colony of Connecticut, June 27, 1670. 3. Daniel, born circa 1623. Took Freeman Oath at Spring- field, Massachusetts Bay Colony May 10, 1648. 4. Thomas, born circa 1627 at Weymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, was a resident of Dorchester from 1645 to 1652 and of Sherborn from 1652 to 1705. Married (first) Experience Leland; (second) Hannah Sheppard; married (third) at Medfield, Massachusetts Bay Colony, Margaret Bouker. He died at Sherborn, Massachusetts Bay Colony. April 11, 1705. 5. Margaret, born circa 1630, married Nickolas Rockwood. 6. Nathaniel, probably died young. While many claim him the son of John Holbrook, Nathaniel could be a grandson, for the early authorities in searching diligently to find parents for the unplaced and puzzling Holbrooks, often named in error grandchildren as children. **************************************************

MIGRATION: 1635 on the Marygould (on 20 March 163[4/]5, "Thomas Holbrooke of Broudway," aged 34, "Jane Holbrooke his wife," aged 34, "John Holbrooke his son," aged 11, "Thomas Holbrooke his son," aged 10, "Anne Holbrooke his daughter," aged 5, and "Elizabeth his daughter," aged 1, were enrolled at Weymouth, Dorsetshire, as a passenger for New England on the Marygould [Hotten 286; GMN 7:9]). FIRST RESIDENCE: Weymouth. CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Admission to Weymouth church by May 1645 implied by ffeemanship. FREEMAN: [blank] May 1645 (third in a sequence of three Weymouth men) [MBCR 2:294]. In his will, dated 31 February 1668[/9] and proved 24 April 1677, "Thomas Holbrook of Weymouth" bequeathed to "Jane, my beloved wife, during her life, my whole estate ... at her dispose for her necessary and comfortable maintenance"; to "my endeared children all my estate, of whatever quality and quantity soever the same shall be, that shall remain at my wife Jane's decease, there being six of them, three sons and three daughters, to be equally divided between them, always provided that my eldest son, John Holbrooke, shall have a double portion, and the rest of my estate to be divided equally, viz: unto my son, Tho[mas] Holbrook, my son W[illia]m Holbrook, unto my daughter Anne Rennolds, unto my daughter Elizabeth Hatch, and unto my daughter Jane Drake, to be equally divided amongst them as near as may be"; to "my grandchild John Holbrooke the eldest, my sword"; to "my grandchild Peter Holbrooke my gun and my gray mare colt"; to "my grandchild W[illia]m Holbrook my musket"; to "all my grandchildren that shall be living at my wife Jane's decease, two shillings apiece"; "I do hereby make and ordain my loving wife, the abovesaid Jane Holbrooke, executrix during her life, and at her decease, I do appoint, make and ordain executor ... my loving son John Holbrooke” [SPR 6:200-1]. A codicil was added: "Whereas Peter Holbrooke my grandchild hath been as a servant, and hath been helpful to me Tho[mas] Holbrooke and my wife Jane in our old age, for the space of about eight years before the date of these presents, and still remains with us as a dutiful child, I, Tho[mas] Holbrooke, Senior, this 31st of December, 1673, do will and bequeath unto my beloved grandchild Peter Holbrooke, his heirs and assignees, my dwelling house and about three acres of orchard and arable land, situate and being in Weymouth" [SPR 6:201]. The inventory of the estate of "Thomas Holbrooke late of Weymoth deceased," taken 10 March 167[6/]7, totalled £129 Is., of which £40 was real estate: "house, orchard and land adjoining to it," £40 [SPR 12:153- 54]. BIRTH: About 1589 (deposed 2 November 1666 aged seventy-seven [Joseph Neal Anc 128-29, citing SJC Case #815]). She died between 31 December 1673 (when she was named in the codicil to her husband's will) and 24 April 1677 (when John Holbrook was named executor of his father's estate [SPR 6:201]). (2) about 1696 Abigail (Wright) (Sharp) Clapp, daughter of RICHARD WRIGHT (1630, Lynn} and widow of ROBERT SHARPE {1635, Braintree} and THOMAS CLAPP {1638, Weymouth} [TAG 67:38; GMB 3:2072-74]. iii THOMAS HOLBROOK, b. about 1624 (aged 10 on 20 March 1634/5 [Hotten 286]); m. by about 1651 Joan Kingman (eldest known child b. about 1651 [Joseph Neal Anc 133]; "Henry Kingman" and his daughter "Joane," aged 11, were passengers on the Marygould with the Holbrook family [Hotten 284]; in his will of 24 May 1677, "Henry Kingman of Weighmouth" included a bequest to "my daughter Holbrooke" [SPR 1:530]; in his will of 25 July 1695, "Thomas Holbrooke of Brantry" included a bequest to "my beloved wife Jone Holbrooke" [SPR 11:326]). iv ANNE HOLBROOK, b. about 1630 (aged 5 on 20 March 1634/5 [Hotten 286]); m. by an unknown date John Reynolds. v ELIZABETH HOLBROOK, b. about 1634 (aged 1 on 20 March 1634/5 [Hotten 285]); m. Scituate 6 May 1650 Walter Hatch [PCR 8:19], son of WILLIAM HATCH {1635, Scituate} [Joseph Neal Anc 116-18]. vi JANE HOLBROOK, b. say 1637; m. by about 1657 Thomas Drake (eldest known child b. about 1657 [Weymouth Hist 3:204-5]). ASSOCIATIONS: Rebecca Holbrook, sister of this immigrant, married CLEMENT WEAVER {1640, Weymouth} [Joseph Neal Anc 128]. This immigrant had a brother John Holbrook, whose fate was unknown in 1625 [Joseph Neal Anc 128]. The absurd claim has been made that this John Holbrook was already in New England in 1626, and was the father of every stray Holbrook male who later appeared in New England [M&JCH 17:89]. There was no John Holbrook in Dorchester in 1635, and this entire proposed family did not exist. At some point between 1620 and 1635, Thomas Holbrook and his family moved from Glastonbury to Broadway. This move may be connected to the migration of Rev. JOSEPH HULL {1635, Weymouth} to Broadway by 1633. COMMENTS: The usually accurate and reliable V.C. Sanborn mistakenly assigned this immigrant as a passenger on the Hopewell, but corrected himself within a year [NEHGR 58:305, 59:324]. Many later writers have unfortunately picked up the initial assertion but missed the correction. There are clearly several errors in the passenger list entry for this family [Hotten 286]. The ages for the immigrant and his two eldest sons are at great variance with other, more reliable records, and son William does not appear. There are too many errors for us to suggest a reconstruction of what mistakes the clerk might have made. The identities of the second and third wives of son John require some comment. In her will of 22 September 1672, "Elizabeth Otiss of Weymouth ..., widow," made bequests to "son John Streame," to "son-in- law Lt. John Holbrooke," and to "daughter Elizabeth Holbrooke" [SPR 6:133]. This testatrix had been, before her marriage to John Otis, a widow Streame. In his will of 12 July 1699, John Holbrook included bequests to "my beloved wife Mary" and to "her daughter Loring" [SPR 14:111]. Mary Jacob, daughter of RICHARD JACOB (1633, Watertown} [GMB 2:1069-71], married John Otis, son of the man of the same name noted immediately above. They had a daughter Elizabeth Otis, who married first Thomas Allyn and second, on 20 July 1699, David Loring [Savage 3:323]. Although this latter marriage took place eight days after the making of John Holbrook's will, he would certainly have known of the impending marriage, and so this is very likely the "daughter Loring" named in his will. If all this is correct, then the second and third wives of John Holbrook were related through a string of marriages, although there was no biological connection. Savage says of this immigrant that he was "of Dorchester 1652, last at Medfield 1668" [Savage 2:443]. Pope claims that he was "[o]f Dorchester, planter, bought land beyond Neponset, 31 (6) 1649" [Pope 234]. On 31 August 1649, "Thomas Holbrooke of the same [Dorchester], husbandman," purchased thirty acres "lying beyond Neponsett River in Dorchester," and, on 10 April 1652, he sold this same parcel [SLR 1:197, 198]. On 8 May 1652, "Thomas Holbrooke" was one of three Dorchester men who bought a large tract of land "on the westerly side of Charles River about three miles from Naticke" [SLR 1:304]. Later deeds regarding this property connect this Thomas Holbrook consistently with Medfield and then Sherbom [SLR 2:308, 8:1, 10:14, 12:264], showing that this was a distinct man from the Thomas Holbrook who is the subject of this sketch and is always seen in Weymouth, and from his son of the same name, who resided in Braintree. This Thomas Holbrook of Dorchester may have been connected with Richard Holbrook of the same place. The existence of this Thomas Holbrook who ended up in Sherbom probably explains the peculiar statement by Savage that the Weymouth man had "three daughters by Experience, d. of first Hopestill Leland" [Savage 2:443], In this latter error, Savage was doubly misled by the earlier writings of Rev. Abner Morse, one of the least accomplished genealogists of any generation. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: The best account of this immigrant and his family was prepared by Walter Goodwin Davis in 1945 [Joseph Neal Anc 125-33]. In 1992 The Mary & John Clearing House published many English records on the Holbrook family, but the section on the immigrant has many errors and should not be relied on [M&JCH 17:85-90]. <<<<<>>>>>

He and fam- ily sailed on the ship Hopewell to the Massa chusetts Bay Colony and settled at Weymouth. 4. John Holbrook - Born about 1595 at Glastonbury. Married Sarah ??? before 1620. Emi- grated to Massachusetts Bay Colony around 1625. Died before 1644. Roberts Lord, Holbrook and Allied Families. Because of a lack of relevant wills, and because the names of parents are not given in baptismal records, this is very difficult to do with any certainty. The relevant baptism records and wills from Thornbury were first printed in the NEHGR in 1906. [1] [2] However, serious errors were made in transcribing these records in both dates and names. This caused later researchers to be misled and publish inaccurate genealogies. Some researchers believe this Holbrook family is from the Gloucestershire tree. Like the Thayers, transcribing errors have been made. ====================================== William Holbrook who was born circa 1562. It is impossible to ascertain the exact date of his birth as the baptismal records of the Church of St. John the Baptist, in which parish he was undoubtedly born, do not begin until 1600. His will, signed December 11, 1625, and probated in February of the following year, is still on record at Wells, the county seat of Somersetshire. This quaint document gives us considerable information on the Holbrook family. In this will, after commending his soul to Almighty God, he divided his earthly possessions amongst his children, viz., Thomas, John (if living), William the younger, his daughter Basell and his three grandsons. His son William Holbrook was made executor and residuary legatee while his sons-in-law, Clement Weaver, Sr. and Thomas Tylye were appointed overseers." [1]--A. He was an Exilarch, head of the Jewish exile in Babylon, during the days of Judah haNasi who contemporaneously was active in the Land of Israel, during the fifth generation of the Tannaim. He is a descendant of the House of David, and was recorded on the Talmud merely as R. Huna, which caused confusion between him and the Amora sage of the second generation, that was recorded on the Talmud with the same name, and was known to be a disciple of Abba Arika, and thus R. Sherira Gaon referred to him, on his epistle (Iggeret Rav Sherira Gaon), as Huna Kamma [1] (Kamma in Aramaic = the first), in order to distinguish him form the Amora sage of the second generation, and thereafter, the Achronim and Geonim sages began referring to him in the same appellation as well. Judah haNasi who contemporaneously was active in the Land of Israel, and was president ("Nasi") of the Sanhedrin, located at the time in the Galilee, a position that was considered at the time the most ranked one in the Land of Israel, had asked R. Hiyya, concerning his obligation to "Korban Nasi" (leader's sacrifice) over sins he might have, a question that basically meant whether he had the status of a king or not (and on the non-practical level, since the Temple in Jerusalem was at the time in ruins to be sacrificing any). R. Hiyya replied: "You have your rival in Babylon". —B. Talmud, Tractate Horayoth, 11b During the Hadrianic persecution several scholars of standing, R. Yochanan Ha-Sandlar, R. Eleazar b. Shamua and other pupils of R. Akiva settled temporarily in Babylonia and thus enhanced its prestige. However, the masterful personality of the patriarch R. Judah I still dominated from Israel. There were at least five Babylonians at his court, and he claimed and was accorded the right to ordain judges for Babylonia also. R. Judah HaNasi did indeed admit the genealogical superiority of the exilarch, R. Huna, but only at a safe distance. Rival or as in Hebrew צרה, which lit. means trouble, is a biblical phrase used to describe the "other woman";[2] hence, the most ranked position is held by two people, accordingly "Nasi" and "Exilarch" are equal in their status, and consequently, you are not the sole leader, which would have meant you are obliged to sacrifice a king's offering, or enjoy such a status.
