- Father: Theodosius I AUGUSTUS Emperor of the Roman Empire
- Mother: Aelia Flavia FLACILLA
- Birth: 385, Constantinople, Anatolia, Roman Empire
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia - family of Theodosius By his first wife, the probably Spanish Aelia Flaccilla Augusta, he had two sons, Arcadius and Honorius, and a daughter, Aelia Pulcheria; Arcadius was his heir in the East and Honorius in the West. Both Aelia Flaccilla and Pulcheria died in 385. His second wife (but never declared Augusta) was Galla, daughter of the emperor Valentinian I and his second wife Justina. Theodosius and Galla had a son, Gratian, born in 388 and who died young, and a daughter, Aelia Galla Placidia (392–450). Placidia was the only child who survived to adulthood and later became an Empress.

- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy ÆTHELBERHT (-762[372]). Bede names "Aedilberctum, Eadberctum et Alricum" as the three sons of "Uictred filius Ecgberti rex Cantuariorum"[373]. "Æthelbertus filius regis Wihtredi" granted property to abbess Mildred by charter dated 11 Jul 724, consented to by "Eadbertus ad petitionem germani sui Æthelberti"[374]. He succeeded his father in 725 as ÆTHELBERHT II joint King of Kent, ruling jointly with his brother Eadberht. Yorke says that, according to charter evidence, Æthelberht was the older of the two brothers[375], but this is not apparent from the charters referred to below. "Æthilberht rex Cantuariorum" granted fishing rights and land at Broomhill, Kent to the abbey of Lyminge St Mary by charter dated 741[376]. "Æthilberchtus rex Cantie" subscribed a charter of "Eardulfus rex Cantuariorum" dated 748 which granted land in Kent to the church of Rochester St Andrew's[377]. He continued to rule after the death of his brother Eadberht. "Æthilbertus rex Cantiæ" wrote to Boniface, dated [748/54][378]. "Æthilberhctus rex Cantie" exchanged pasture rights for use of a mill with St Augustine's, Canterbury, by charter dated 762[379]. Canterbury was burned during his reign. _____________________________________________________ Æthelbert II (Old English: Æðelberht; 725–762) was king of Kent. Upon the death of his father Wihtred, the kingdom was ruled by his three sons, Æthelbert II, Eadberht I and Alric. Æthelbert seems to have outlived both of his brothers and later reigned jointly with his nephew Eardwulf. He died in 762, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (recorded under 760 due to chronological dislocation). He seems to have left a son, Eadberht II. He issued a charter before his accession, dated 11 July 724, that was witnessed by his father. As king he issued further charters, confirmed a charter of his brother Eadberht I, and witnessed a charter of his nephew Eardwulf. During the latter half of Æthelberht II's rule, Kent was under the overlordship of Mercia, but Æthelberht II maintained his position as king. *wikipedia _____________________________________________________ Foundation for Medieval Genealogy EALRICH (-after 762). Bede names "Aedilberctum, Eadberctum et Alricum" as the three sons of "Uictred filius Ecgberti rex Cantuariorum"[391]. "Ælrico filio nostro" subscribed his parents' charter dated 699[392]. He succeeded his brother in 762 as EALRICH joint King of Kent. According to William of Malmesbury[393], King Ealrich reigned for thirty four years but this seems unlikely given the likely birth dates of the sons of King Wihtred. _____________________________________________ Alric (Old English: Alrīc; 8th century) was a king of the Saxon kingdom of Kent, jointly with Æðelberht II and Eadberht I. Alric acceded with his two brothers on the death of his father Wihtred, according to Bede, but is otherwise unknown. Kelly observed that the reign of 762 to 796 attributed to him by William of Malmesbury “is evidently fantasy, inspired by a desire to account neatly for all the brothers mentioned by Bede”. *wikipedia _____________

- Title Of Nobility: Queen of England
- LifeSketch: Æthelflæd was the daughter of Ordmær, Ealdorman of the East Anglians and his wife Ealda, estimated to have been born about 941. Æthelflæd was also known as Æthelflæd the Fair and Æthelflæd the White. She is likely the noble woman Æthelflæd mentioned in Goscelin's "Life of Saint Edith of Wilton" and by John of Worcester and William of Malmesbury in their histories as Æthelflæd, surnamed Candida or Eneda "the White" or "White Duck" Æthelflæd is believed to have married Edgar the Peaceable between 957 and 959, before he became King of England, when he ruled Mercia. Edgar'd oldest son Edward is believed by most to be the son of Æthelflæd. Edward is believed to have been in his teens when he succeeded his father in 975, and was likely born about 962, right during the time period when history says Edgar was married to Æthelflæd . Very little is known about Æthelflæd with certainty. It is likely that Æthelflæd and Edgar were truly married, however, some believe she was only a concubine. This information was likely circulated by Edgar's third wife Ælfthryth to promote her own children as Edgar's legitimate heirs, and increase their claim to the throne. Edward was Edgar's acknowledged oldest son and witnessed many charters in which he was identified as his son. While he was never identified specifically as his legitimate son he was not identified as illegitimate either. It might simply be that there was no need at the time to indicate his legitimacy for it was known and accepted. Ælfthryth's son was identified as legitimate, however, Ælfthryth had been previously married, it might have been necessary for Edgar to positively claim the child to insure there would be no questions about his later claim to the throne. No more is heard about Æthelflæd, it is believed she died shortly after Edward's birth, sometime before 964, when Edgar began another questionable relationship with Wulfthryth of Wilton. ------------------------------------------------------ Aethelflaed (Æthelflæd) the Fair died c. 964 Father – Ealdorman Ordmaer Mother – Ealda Spouse – King Edgar Children – Edward Aethelflaed the Fair was born to Ealdorman Ordmaer and Ealda. Her birth date of 941 is based on an assumption that she was around 20 years old when she married. Very little is known of her life. - Æthelflæd NOT THE SAME AS Ælfthryth: Æthelflæd was the 1st wife of Edgar the Peaceful and daughter of Ordmaer, Ealdorman of the East Anglians; Ælfthryth was the 3rd wife of Edgar the Peaceful, the widow of Æthelwald, Ealdorman of East Anglia, and the daughter of Ordgar, Ealdorman of Devon in the West Country.

- Marriage and Queen of Mercia: Æthelred became Lord of the Mercians (King) about 881, when Æthelflæd married him about 886 she became 'Lady of the Mercians' (Queen). Æthelflæd was 15 or 16 at the time of their marriage and Æthelred was 'considerably older'., 886, Wantage, Wessex
- St Oswald's Priory: St Oswald's Priory was founded by Æthelflæd and her husband Æthelred in the late 880s or the 890s. Both Æthelflæd and Æthelred are buried there., ABT 890, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England
- ONLY ONE CHILD: Æthelflæd and her husband Æthelred had only one child, Ælfwynn whose birth was said to have almost killed Æthelflæd. According to William of Malmsbury, Æthelflæd took measures to make sure she had no more children., BET 886 AND 903, Glouster, Gloucestershire, Mercia, England
- FOSTERED ÆTHELSTAN, HER NEPHEW: It is believed that after the death of his mother and his fathers remarriage, Æthelstan went to live in Mercia, where his Aunt Æthelflæd and Uncle Æthelred continued his royal education. It appears that he looked upon them as loving parents and made a 'pact of paternal piety' with Æthelred.
- RESTORED TAMWORTH AND MADE IT HER PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE: Tamworth once the capital of Mercia was destroyed in 874. In 913 Æthelflæd rebuilt the ruined town, constructed a burh to defend it, and made Tamworth her principal residence. It is there that she died in 918., 913, Tamworth, Staffordshire, Mercia
- Myrcna hlædige, "Lady of the Mercians", Solitary Female Ruler: On her husband's death in 911, Æthelflæd became the sole ruler of Mercia. She is the only case of a female ruler of a kingdom in Anglo-Saxon history and her succession was "one of the most unique events in early medieval history"., BET 911 AND 918, Mercia, England
- BURIAL AT GLOUCESTER SIGNIFICANT: Æthelflæd's choice of burial is seen as significant. Had she been buried at Winchester it would have acceded Mercia's subordination to Wessex, her burial at Repton (traditional for Mercia) would have been seen as a declaration of independence. Her choice of Gloucester, a middle ground, is seen to signify her desire that Mercia maintain it's own identity but work in cooperation with Wessex., JUN 918, St Oswald's Priory, Gloucester, Mercia
- DAUGHTER SUCCEEDED BUT DEPOSED: Upon her death Æthelflæd's daughter Ælfwynn succeeded her to become Lady of Mercia, 6 months later in early December 918 she was deposed, removed from power by her uncle King Edward., BET JUN AND DEC 918, Tamworth, Staffordshire, Mercia
- LifeSketch: Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, was the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxons and his wife, Ealhswith of Mercia. It is believed she was born about 870. In the mid 880s (between 882 and 887) Æthelflæd married Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, she would have been about 15, and it is believed he was "considerably" older. In the face of continuous Danish invasions, Æthelred had accepted Alfred's overlordship but the marriage cemented the alliance between Alfred and Mercia. Æthelflæd and Æthelred had one child, a daughter: - Ælfwynn, born about 888. Æthelred fought alongside Alfred until his death in 899 and continued to fight alongside Edward the Elder (his wife's brother) but it is believed his health began to decline between 899 and 909 and Æthelflæd became the de facto ruler of Mercia. Æthelflæd ruled Mercia in her own right as Lady of the Mercians from the time of Æthelred's death in 911 until her own death on 12 June 918. The accession of a female ruler in Mercia is described by the historian Ian Walker as "one of the most unique events in early medieval history". Unlike Æthelred who became ruler of Mercia through necessity, Æthelflæd actually descended from Mercian royalty on her mother's side. Her mother's mother, Eadburh, was a member of the Mercian royal house, probably a descendant of King Coenwulf. Thus Æthelflæd was half-Mercian. Æthelflæd's younger brother Edward married several times and his oldest son Æthelstan, from Edward's first marriage, was raised by his Aunt Æthelflæd in Mercia. Edward and Æthelflæd, working together, had much success against the Danes. It was only because his sister held Mercia so securely against Viking invasion that Edward was able to make such progress against the southern Danes. Æthelflæd led Mercian armies on expeditions, which she planned, and is described as "renowned as a competent war-leader". Æthelflæd successfully repelled Viking invasion after Viking invasion, 3 in 917 alone. In early 918, Æthelflæd gained possession of Leicester without opposition and most of the local Danish army submitted to her. A few months later, the leading men of Danish-ruled York offered to pledge their loyalty to Æthelflæd, Unfortunately, Æthelflæd died on 12 June 918 before they could pledge, and she was succeeded by her daughter Ælfwynn, but in December Edward took personal control of Mercia and carried Ælfwynn off to Wessex. - LifeSketch: ÆTHELRED KING OF WESSEX, ALSO ÆTHELRED THE PIOUS **NOT** ÆTHELRED EALDORMAN OF GAINSBUROUGH **NOT** ÆTHELRED MUCEL **NOT** ÆTHELRED OF MERCIA Æthelred (or Aethelred, Ethelred, Æthel-ræd) was the 4th son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex and his first wife Osberga. He was King of Wessex from 865 until his death. He was the fourth of five sons of King Æthelwulf of Wessex, four of whom in turn became king. He succeeded his elder brother Æthelberht and was followed by his youngest brother, Alfred the Great. Æthelred had two sons, Æthelhelm and Æthelwold, who were passed over for the kingship on their father's death because they were still infants. Alfred was succeeded by his son, Edward the Elder, and Æthelwold unsuccessfully disputed the throne with him. Æthelred's accession coincided with the arrival of the Viking Great Heathen Army in England. Over the next five years the Vikings conquered Northumbria and East Anglia, and at the end of 870 they launched a full-scale attack on Wessex. In early January 871 Æthelred was defeated at the Battle of Reading. Four days later he scored a victory in the Battle of Ashdown, but this was followed by two defeats at Basing and Meretun. He died shortly after Easter. Alfred was forced to buy off the Vikings, but he scored a decisive victory over them seven years later at the Battle of Edington. Æthelred's reign was important numismatically. Wessex and Mercia were close allies when he became king, and he carried the alliance further by adopting the Mercian Lunettes design, thus creating a unified coinage design for southern England for the first time. The common design foreshadowed the unification of England over the next sixty years and the reform coinage of King Edgar a century later. Æthelred succeeded to the throne on Æthelberht's death in 865, and he married Wulfthryth at an unknown date. West Saxon kings' wives had a low status in the ninth century and very little is known about them. They were not usually given the title of regina (queen), an omission which Alfred the Great justified on the ground of the misconduct of a queen at the beginning of the ninth century. The name of Æthelred's wife is only known because she was recorded as a witness to one charter, S 340 of 868, where she is shown as Wulfthryth regina, suggesting that she had a higher status than other kings' wives. Wulfthryth and Æthelred had two known sons: - Æthelhelm - Æthelwold. Wulfthryth is believed to have been mercian and may have been a daughter of Ealdorman Wulfhere of Wiltshire. Wulfhere forfeited his lands in 878 after being charged with deserting King Alfred for the Danes, perhaps because he attempted to secure Viking support for his oldest grandson Æthelhelm's claim to the throne in opposition to Alfred. Alfred records in the preamble to his will that Æthelwulf had left property jointly to three of his sons, Æthelbald, Æthelred and Alfred, with the proviso that the brother who lived longest would succeed to all of it. When Æthelbald died in 860, Æthelred and Alfred, who were still young, agreed to entrust their share to the new king, Æthelberht, on a promise that he would return it to them intact. When Æthelred succeeded to the throne, Alfred asked him at a meeting of the witan to give him his share of the property. However, Æthelred said that he had attempted many times to divide it but had found it too difficult, and he would instead leave the whole to Alfred on his death. When Alfred succeeded, the supporters of Æthelred's infant sons complained that Alfred should have shared the property with them, and Alfred had his father's will read to a meeting of the witan to prove his right to keep the whole of the property. Alfred rarely witnessed Æthelred's charters, and this together with the argument over their father's will suggests that they may not have been on good terms. The historian Pauline Stafford suggests that Æthelred may have chosen to highlight his wife's status as queen in a charter in order to assert his own sons' claims to the succession. Æthelred died shortly after Easter, 15 April 871, "having vigorously and honourably ruled the kingdom in good repute, amid many difficulties, for five years" according to Asser. He was buried at the royal minster at Wimborne in Dorset. The Vikings defeated the West Saxons at Reading while Alfred was in attendance of his brothers funeral. Æthelred had two sons, and if he had lived until they were adults it is unlikely that Alfred would ever have become king, but as they were still young children Alfred succeeded.[61] Æthelhelm died before Alfred, and Æthelwold unsuccessfully disputed the throne with Edward the Elder after Alfred's death in 899.[62] One of the two places where Æthelwold launched his rebellion was Wimborne, which was symbolically important as his father's burial place.[63] Æthelred's descendants played an important role in governing the country in the late tenth and early eleventh centuries.[64] They include Ealdorman Æthelweard, who recorded in his Latin version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle that he was Æthelred's great-great-grandson. King Eadwig was forced to accept annulment of his marriage to Ælfgifu due to consanguinity; she may have been Æthelweard's sister, which would make her Eadwig's third cousin once removed due to her descent from Æthelred, and thus within the forbidden degrees of relationship according to the church.[65] Æthelweard and his son Æthelmær were leading magnates who governed west Wessex as ealdormen of the western provinces. The family lost their positions and property after Cnut conquered England in 1016, and one of Æthelmær's sons was executed by Cnut in 1017, while a son-in-law was banished in 1020.[66] Another son, Æthelnoth, was Archbishop of Canterbury, and he lived until 1038. **This Æthelred was never an Ealdorman of Gainsborough, son's of royalty were not made Ealdormen, they already held a position higher than that.

- Mother: Ælfgifu of York
- Birth: ABT 986, Wessex, England
- Also known as: Æthelstan "Atheling," King Of England
- Title Of Nobility: Prince of ENGLAND
- LifeSketch: Æthelstan Ætheling (Old English: Æþelstan Æþeling), early or mid 980s to 25 June 1014, was the eldest son of King Æthelred the Unready by his first wife Ælfgifu and the heir apparent to the kingdom until his death. He made his first appearance as a witness to a charter of his father in 993. He probably spent part of his childhood at Æthelingadene, Dean in west Sussex, and his paternal grandmother Ælfthryth may have played an important part in his upbringing. Almost nothing is known of his life, although he seems to have formed a friendship with Sigeforth and Morcar, two of the leading thegns of the Five Boroughs of the East Midlands. In 1013 King Æthelred was forced into temporary exile in Normandy, and while it is not known what became of Æthelstan and his surviving full brothers, Edmund Ironside and Eadwig, during the reign of King Sweyn, they probably remained somewhere in England. Æthelstan's last appearance is in a charter dated 1013. Æthelstan was a "warrior prince" and by his death he had accumulated a large collection of swords, prized war horses and combat equipment. In his will, copies of which still survive, and which was made on the day of his death, he left Edmund Ironside his most prized possession, a sword which had once belonged to Offa of Mercia, together with some of his estates and other pieces of his war gear. To his other full brother, Eadwig, he gave another piece from his large weapon collection, a silver-hilted sword. Much of his remaining land and wealth was divided between churches, friends and servants. He also made bequests to his sword-sharpener and stag huntsman. While he mentions his father, grandmother and foster-mother in his will, his own mother and her soul are completely omitted. He also makes no mention of his stepmother or half-brothers, suggesting a division within the royal family at the time. He was buried at the Old Minster, Winchester, the first burial there of someone who was not king since Edward the Elder's brother, Æthelweard, in 922.

- LifeSketch: Æthelswith (c. 838–888) was the only known daughter of King Æthelwulf of Wessex. She married King Burgred of Mercia in 853. The couple had no known issue. Her marriage probably signaled the subordination of Burgred to his father-in-law and the Saxon kingdom at a time when both Wessex and Mercia were suffering Danish (Viking) raids. Burgred also had ongoing problems with the Kingdom of Powys on his western border and in 853 Æthelwulf subjugated the Welsh state on Burgred's behalf. Repeated Danish incursions over the years gradually weakened Mercia militarily and in 868 Burgred was forced to call upon Æthelswith's brother King Æthelred of Wessex to assist him in confronting an entrenched Danish army at Nottingham. This was the last time the Saxons came to the aid of the Mercians and is also notable as the occasion on which Alfred the Great, another brother of Æthelswith's, married his Mercian wife Ealhswith. Burgred's reign lasted till 874 when the Vikings drove him from the kingdom and he fled to Rome with Æthelswith. He died shortly after. Æthelswith lived on in Italy, to be buried at Pavia in 888.

- Also known as: Saint Etheldreda de Englia Abbess of St. Audrey
- Title Of Nobility: Queen of Northumbria, Abbess of Ely
- Death 679 of the plague: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Excerpt from Wikiwand: Æthelthryth (or Æðelþryð or Æþelðryþe; c. 636 – 23 June 679 AD) was an East Anglian princess, a Fenland and Northumbrian queen and Abbess of Ely. She is an Anglo-Saxon saint, and is also known as Etheldreda or Audrey, especially in religious contexts. Life Æthelthryth was probably born in Exning, near Newmarket in Suffolk. She was one of the four saintly daughters of Anna of East Anglia, including Wendreda and Seaxburh of Ely, all of whom eventually retired from secular life and founded abbeys. Æthelthryth made an early first marriage in around 652 to Tondberct, chief or prince of the South Gyrwe. She managed to persuade her husband to respect her vow of perpetual virginity that she had made prior to their marriage. Upon his death in 655, she retired to the Isle of Ely, which she had received from Tondberct as a morning gift.[1] Æthelthryth was subsequently remarried for political reasons in 660, this time to Ecgfrith of Northumbria, who was fourteen or fifteen at the time. Shortly after his accession to the throne in 670, Æthelthryth wished to become a nun. This step possibly led to Ecgfrith's long quarrel with Wilfrid, bishop of York, who was her spiritual counselor. One account relates that while Ecgfrith initially agreed Æthelthryth should continue to remain a virgin, about 672 he appealed to Wilfrid for the enforcement of his marital rights as against Etheldreda's religious vocation. The bishop succeeded at first in persuading the king to consent that Etheldreda should live for some time in peace as a sister of the Coldingham nunnery, founded by his aunt, Æbbe of Coldingham. Eventually, in light of the danger of being forcibly carried off by the king, Æthelthryth then fled back to the Isle of Ely[1] with two nuns as companions. They managed to evade capture, thanks in part to the rising of the tide. Another version of the legend related that she halted on the journey at 'Stow' and sheltered under a miraculously growing ash tree which came from her staff planted in the ground. Stow came to be known as 'St Etheldred's Stow', when a church was built to commemorate this event. It is more likely that this 'Stow' actually refers to another fair,[2][3] near Threekingham.[4][5] Ecgfrith later married Eormenburg and expelled Wilfrid from his kingdom in 678. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Æthelthryth founded a double monastery at Ely in 673, which was later destroyed in the Danish invasion of 870.:

- LifeSketch: Æthelwulf was the son of King Ecgberht of Wessex. Ecgberht was from Wessex but was in exile in Francia until 802 when he returned and took control of the throne of Wessex. Æthelwulf was likely born in Wessex sometime after Ecgberht's return, between 802 and 810, but Æthelwulf was first recorded in 825, when Egbert sent Æthelwulf with Eahlstan, Bishop of Sherborne, and Wulfheard, Ealdorman of Hampshire, and a large army into Kent to expel sub-king Baldred. The name of Æthelwulf's mother is not known, and he had no recorded siblings. He is known to have had two wives in succession, and so far as is known, Osburh, the senior of the two, was the mother of all his children. She was the daughter of Oslac, described by Asser, biographer of their son Alfred the Great, as "King Æthelwulf's famous butler", a man who was descended from Jutes who had ruled the Isle of Wight. Æthelwulf and Osburh had six known children: - Æthelstan (c 820-c850) - Æthelbald (c835 -860) married Judith of France after his father's death - Æthelswith (c 838 - 888) Married King Burgred of Mercia, became Queen of Mercia - Æthelberht (c839 - 865) - Æthelred (c 845 - 871) - Alfred (848/849 – 26 October 899) His eldest son, Æthelstan, was old enough to be appointed King of Kent in 839, so he must have been born by the early 820s, and he died in the early 850s.The second son, Æthelbald, is first recorded as a charter witness in 841, and if, like Alfred, he began to attest when he was around six, he would have been born around 835; he was King of Wessex from 858 to 860. Æthelwulf's third son, Æthelberht, was probably born around 839 and was king from 860 to 865. The only daughter, Æthelswith, married Burgred, King of Mercia, in 853. The other two sons were much younger: Æthelred was born around 848 and was king from 865 to 871, and Alfred was born around 849 and was king from 871 to 899. Osburh probably died by 855, although it is possible that she was repudiated. In 856 Æthelwulf married Judith, daughter of Charles the Bald, King of West Francia and future Holy Roman Emperor, and his wife Ermentrude. There were no children from Æthelwulf's marriage to Judith, and after his death she married his eldest surviving son and successor, Æthelbald.

- Birth: BET 1015 AND 1035
- Residence: BET 1038 AND 1056, Réka Castle, Terra Britanorum de Nadasd, Baranya, Hungary
- Also known as: Agatha of Hungary
- Also known as: Ágota
- Also known as: Ágota
- ARRIVED IN LONDON WITH FAMILY: Agatha's husband Edward, the only living heir to the throne of England, returned to England to take his place as Heir Designate on 17 April 1057. He brought with him from Hungary his wife and children., 17 APR 1057, London, England
- WIDOWED 2 DAYS AFTER ARRIVAL: Two days after their arrival in London, Edward suddenly died under 'suspicious circumstances' presumably murdered. His wife and children were strangers in a strange land, having not even met King Edward yet., 19 APR 1057, London, England
- LIVED AT COURT UNDER PROTECTION OF KING EDWARD: Edward was dead, his son Edgar became the ӕtheling, the designated heir, Agatha and her children moved into King Edward's court living under his protection., ABT 20 APR 1057, London, England
- LifeSketch: Agatha was the wife of Edward the Exile (heir to the throne of England). Agatha and Edward most likely married between 1035 and 1038 in either Hungary or Kievan Rus'. Prince Edward was the son of Edmund "Ironside" King of England and his wife, Ealdgyth, and had been living in exile in the court of Yaroslav the Wise in Kievan Rus'. Agatha and Edward had 3 children: - Christina, first born, Abbess of Romsey. - Margaret second born, married Malcolm III and became Queen of Scotland. - Edgar Ætheling, youngest and only son, became the Uncrowned King of England. Edward also spent time at the court of the Hungarian kings. King Edward the Confessor of England (Edward the Exile's uncle), had no children of his own, and needed a legitimate blood heir. After a search and diplomatic negotiations, Edward agreed to return to England, as Heir Apparent, in 1057. Edward, Agatha and their 3 children, made the voyage to England, arriving on 17 April 1057. Unfortunately, only 2 days after their arrival, Agatha's husband Edward died. Widowed and just arrived in a new country, Agatha and the children were welcomed into the court of Edward the Confessor. Agatha's son Edgar was only 6 years old, but was intended to be King Edward's heir. When King Edward died in 1066, however, Edgar was deemed to young to succeed him (14 or 15). An older, stronger king was needed to face off with William the Conqueror. Harold Godwinson was king for less than a year when he died at the Battle of Hastings and young Edgar was voted to be king anyway. 'King' for roughly 57 days, Edgar was never crowned, and was forced to submit to William the Conqueror. Following William's conquest of England, William held Edgar in custody for a time in Normandy. After Edgar's release and return to England, in 1067 Agatha fled with her children, some believe intending to return to Hungary. They were shipwrecked on the coast of Scotland, and found refuge with Agatha's future son-in-law Malcolm III. Agatha died about 1067. Her death location or burial information is unknown. Simeon of Durham carries what appears to be the last reference to her in 1070. AGATHA'S PARENTAGE Nothing is known of Agatha's early life, what speculation appears is impossible to separate from the controversial issue of her paternity, one of the unresolved questions of medieval genealogy. Agatha's origin is alluded to in numerous surviving medieval sources, but the information they provide is sometimes imprecise, often contradictory, and occasionally demonstrably false: The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle says she was 'the emperor's relative, called Agatha', while a second entry says that Margaret's mother (i.e. Agatha) 'goes back to the emperor Henry'. The chronicle of John of Worcester calls her 'daughter of the brother of Emperor Henry', and in an associated genealogy, specifies that it is Henry III. Chronicler Simeon of Durham says she was 'daughter of German emperor Henry' but this seemingly misreads John's germanus (brother) as Germani (German). William of Malmesbury refers to Agatha as 'sister of the queen ' in text that refers to the Hungarian king. Orderic Vitalis states that Agatha was daughter of the Hungarian king, and that Edward himself ruled Hungary (for which there is no other evidence), and elsewhere says that Edward's father-in-law was Hungarian king Solomon (impossible, as he was younger than Agatha). A legal treatise, Leges Edwardi Confessoris, says that Edward the Exile married to a woman of noble birth while at the Russian court of "king Malesclodus". Chronicler Geoffrey Gaimar who wrote that Edward and his brother were sent via Russia to Hungary where they were placed in the king's protection, and that Edward married the king's daughter. Ailred of Rievaulx gives 4 different conflicting statements, calling Agatha's daughter of English and Hungarian origin, stating that the Hungarian king married Edward to the daughter of his nephew Emperor Henry, stating that Edward married the niece of Emperor Henry, and saying Edward married the emperor's kinswoman. Roger de Hoveden says Agatha was of 'the blood of the Russian kings'. There is no single nexus where all of these conflicting possibilities can refer to the same person, and various attempts have been made to assign a parentage that agrees with only some of the statements, or that are in the spirit of them without matching any explicitly. These include as parents older hypotheses including the following: - Stephen of Hungary and Gisela of Bavaria (making her daughter of a King of Hungary and niece of Emperor Henry II, but as sister's daughter; chronologically unlikely) - Bishop Bruno of Augsburg (making her the niece of Emperor Henry II, but he was a bishop not known to have married or to have had children) - King Solomon of Hungary (born 1053, matching an explicit statement but chronologically impossible) - Henry II (matching daughter of German Emperor Henry, but he had no known children) - Henry III (matching daughter of German Emperor Henry, but his children are well covered in historical record and no Agatha) to which have been added a wide range of modern hypotheses: - Count Liudolf of Brunswick (making her half-brother's daughter of Emperor Henry III) - Grand Prince Yaroslav I the Wise of Kiev and Ingigerd of Sweden (making her of Russian royal blood, and sister of the queen of Hungary) - Duke Ernst II of Swabia (making her half-brother's daughter of Emperor Henry III) - Aba Samuel, King of Hungary by his wife, King Stephen's sister (making her niece of Stephen of Hungary) - Gavril Radomirovich of Bulgaria by his wife, King Stephen's sister (making her niece of Stephen of Hungary) - Count Christanus and Oda of Haldenslieb (he had Russian royal ancestry and she was a kinswoman of the German Emperors - Mieszko II of Poland and Richenza of Lothringia (making her sister of a Hungarian queen and through her mother a cousin of the German Emperors) - Emperor Constantine Monomachus of Byzantium (suggesting he was the emperor Agatha was related to, Byzantine, not German, and that the reference to her being sister of the queen referred to Russia and not Hungary) this is a stretch. AS ONE CAN SEE THERE ARE MANY OPINIONS AS TO WHO AGATHA'S PARENTS WERE.

- Father: Athanaric King of the Tervingi Goths
- Mother: Gaatha SAINT Queen of the Visigoths
- Birth: ABT 370, Peuce Island, Scythia Minor, Roman Empire
- Also known as: King Of The Visigoths
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Visigoths
- Clan Name: House of Balthe
- He was succeeded by his wife's brother, Athaulf.: Alaric married the sister of Athaulf
- LifeSketch: PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THE NAME ON THE RECORD AGAIN - IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE.... He is best known for his sack of Rome in 410, which marked a decisive event in the decline of the Roman Empire. Scholars have often wondered about the cause of King Alaric's death. Recently, Francesco Galassi and his colleagues pored over all the historical, medical and epidemiological sources they could find about the king's death, and concluded that the underlying cause was malaria.[unreliable source?] The stream was temporarily turned aside from its course while the grave was dug, wherein the Gothic chief and some of his most precious spoils were interred. When the work was finished, the river was turned back into its usual channel and the captives by whose hands the labor had been accomplished were put to death that none might learn their secret. A similar story is told of the Decebalus Treasure, buried under a river in 106 AD. These burials repeat Scythian models from the Lower Danube and the Black Sea. Alaric was succeeded in the command of the Gothic army by his brother-in-law, Ataulf, who married Honorius' sister Galla Placidia three years later. ******************************* Foundation for Medieval Genealogy ALARIC (-Bruttium, southern Italy end 410). First mentioned in 391 when he moved southwards into Greece, he suffered several military setbacks but succeeded in resettling the Goths in Macedonia[7]. He was elected in 395 as ALARIC King of the Visigoths. He entered the western part of the Roman Empire in 401, and by the end of the year had attacked Venetia and was threatening Milan. Alaric was defeated by the Romans in 402 at Pollenza, and in 403 at Verona, after which the Goths abandoned Italy and settled in Dalmatia and Pannonia[8]. King Alaric returned to Italy in 408, the Goths' attacks culminating in the sack of Rome in Aug 410[9]. Procopius records that Alaric died from illness[10]. m ---, daughter of ---. The name of King Alaric's wife is not known. Her family origin and marriage are indicated by Olympiodorus Thebæus who records that Alaric was succeeded by “Adaulphum uxoris fratrem””[11]. King Alaric had [one child]: a) [daughter. Her parentage and marriage are indicated by Wolfram who says that Walia was succeeded by “Theoderid, son or rather son-in-law of Alaric I”[12]. As, in another passage, Wolfram says that nothing is known about the earlier life of Theoderic[13], the basis for the latter being Alaric’s son is unknown. Wolfram quotes no primary source which corroborated his assertion that Theoderic was Alaric’s son-in-law. He cites Olympiodorus Thebæus in a footnote, but the passage in question makes no mention of any relationship between Theoderic and Alaric[14]. m THEODERIC, son of --- (-killed in battle near Troyes 451). He was elected to succeed in 418 on the death of King Walia as THEODERIC I King of the Visigoths.] These two brothers appear to have been the siblings of Alaric. Two brothers, parents not known. 1. SARUS (-murdered). He is named as brother of Sigeric by Olympiodorus Thebæus who records that Ataulf was succeeded by “Sari frater, Singerichus”[42]. Gothic chief who supported the Romans against Radagaisus in [405]. He fought against Alaric[43]. Revenge for his murder by Ataulf appears to have been the motive for the latter's murder in 415[44]. 2. SIGERIC (-murdered 416). He was elected to succeed in 416 as SIGERIC King of the Visigoths after the murder of his predecessor. Olympiodorus Thebæus records that Ataulf named as his successor “fratri suo”, who was displaced by “Sari frater, Singerichus”, who was killed after seven days[45]. The Chronicon Albeldense names “Sigericus” as successor of Ataulf, adding that he sought peace with the Romans but was killed “a suis”[46].

Gregory of Tours names Albofled as sister of King Clovis, specifying that she was baptised but died soon after, St Rémy sending a letter of condolence to her brother[31]. From the context, it would appear that her baptism took place around the same time as her brother was baptised. “Remigius Episcopus” wrote to “Chlodoveo Regi” consoling him on the death of “germana vestra…Albochledis”[32].

- Father: Audoin König der Langobarden
- Mother: Rodelinda VON THÜRINGEN Königin der Langobarden
- Birth: ABT 525, Pannonia
- Also known as: Latin: Alboinus
- Also known as: Aluinus Lombardorum rex
- Also known as: Aluinus Lombardorum rex
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Lombards
- LifeSketch: The History Files - c.565 - 568 Alboin-Son. Led the Langobards into Italy to form a kingdom. 568 The death of Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I in 565 ends a period of strong rule in Italy. The advent of the Avars in south-eastern Europe triggers a wave of migration that sees the remnants of the Gepids join the Langobards and both peoples, along with various flotsam and jetsam, enter northern Italy. It also permanently ends Germanic dominance in Pannonia. Following the Langobard migration southwards, a new confederation, the Bavarii, forms in their place north of the Danube, in modern south-eastern Germany. 569 The first Roman city to fall is that of Forum Iulii (now Cividale de Friuli), with small Eastern Roman defensive forces from Ravenna unable to offer any viable opposition (and perhaps not even bothering to try). Alboin creates the first Lombard duchy here, the duchy of Friuli, which he hands over to his nephew, Gisulf. The duchy will also form the kingdom's northern defensive line against possible incursions from outside Italy, especially by the Avars. In the same year, Vicenza, Verona and Brescia also fall to Alboin, followed by a great prize in the capture of Milan. 570 - 571 Despite the arrival at Ravenna of a new exarch, the Lombards continue in their successful conquest of Italy. Territorial gains to the south of the exarchate of Ravenna are formalised in the shape of the duchies of Benevento and Spoleto, although these quickly become independent of the Lombard kingdom itself. Rome is temporarily isolated during this period and records destroyed, leaving little information about the pontificate of John III. 572 After a siege lasting three years, the city of Pavia falls to the Lombards. They make it the first capital of their new kingdom. Although Ravenna manages to retain control of the region around this imperial city, and also re-secures Rome through a narrow corridor of territory running through Perugia, the Lombards still have free access to southern Italy and their conquests there. The new kingdom is divided into thirty-six duchies, each based around a Roman city, most of which owe direct allegiance to the king. However, this form of rule makes the kingdom structurally weaker, even more so than Byzantine Italy once the exarchate begins to recover, and becomes a serious problem in the eighth century. The duchies include those of Asti, Bergamo, Brescia, Ceneda, Friuli, Pavia, San Giulio, Tridentum (Trent), Turin, Tuscia, Verona, and Vicenza, plus the independent Benevento and Spoleto in the south. Other regions such as Lugano in the very north are also brought under Lombard control. 572 -Alboin's murder (image see original article) A dramatic depiction of the murder of Alboin, the tribal Langobard leader who united his people and forged a kingdom in northern Italy, by Charles Landseer in 1859 Bizarrely, after all the warfare of his reign, Alboin is murdered in Verona as part of a plot by his wife, Rosamund. This is possibly an act of revenge by Rosamund, whose father Kunimund had been the last ruler of the Gepid kingdom prior to its destruction by the Langobards, after which she had been forced to marry Alboin. Now Rosamund marries her chief accomplice, the king's foster brother (or servant depending on the source) and bearer of arms, Helmichis, and the two attempt to rule the kingdom. They are quickly dissuaded by the hostility of most of the Lombard warrior class, who proclaim Duke Cleph the new king. Rather than go to war, the pair flee to Ravenna with their troops, the royal treasure, and Alboin's daughter, Albsuinda. The plot almost certainly has backing from Ravenna as it removes a powerful figure of opposition and raises the possibility of the Eastern Roman reconquest of Italy. **************************** Wikipedia - article is lengthy, see sources for link Alboin (530s – 28 June 572) was king of the Lombards from about 560 until 572. Alboin was crowned first Lombard king in Italy at Milan in 572, later establishing Pavia as his capital. Lombard rule continued in northern Italy until 774, when the Carolingian Frankish King Charles I (later Emperor Charlemagne) invaded, deposed King Desiderius and proclaimed himself king of Italy. By this time, autonomous Lombard duchies were well established in the southern half of the peninsula in Benevento, Naples, Salerno (see the document SOUTHERN ITALY (1)) and Spoleto (see CENTRAL ITALY), separated from northern Italy by the expanding central Italian Papal territories which represented another obstacle to the northern kings imposing their authority throughout the country. Despite the best efforts of the Carolingian kings, particularly Louis King of Italy who attempted to provide better protection for Rome after the Arab sack of 846 as well as extend his authority into the Lombard duchies in the south, the new dynasty never succeeded in establishing its authority throughout the Italian peninsula. After the death of King Louis in 875, the Italian crown passed to Carolingian monarchs from the line of Ludwig II "der Deutsche" King of the East Franks, until Emperor Charles III who was deposed in 887. During his reign the Lombards ended their migrations by settling in Italy, the northern part of which Alboin conquered between 569 and 572. He had a lasting effect on Italy and the Pannonian Basin; in the former his invasion marked the beginning of centuries of Lombard rule, and in the latter his defeat of the Gepids and his departure from Pannonia ended the dominance there of the Germanic peoples. The period of Alboin's reign as king in Pannonia following the death of his father, Audoin, was one of confrontation and conflict between the Lombards and their main neighbors, the Gepids. The Gepids initially gained the upper hand, but in 567, thanks to his alliance with the Avars, Alboin inflicted a decisive defeat on his enemies, whose lands the Avars subsequently occupied. The increasing power of his new neighbours caused Alboin some unease however, and he therefore decided to leave Pannonia for Italy, hoping to take advantage of the Byzantine Empire's reduced ability to defend its territory in the wake of the Gothic War. After gathering a large coalition of people, Alboin crossed the Julian Alps in 568, entering an almost undefended Italy. He rapidly took control of most of Venetia and Liguria. In 569, unopposed, he took northern Italy's main city, Milan. Pavia offered stiff resistance however, and was taken only after a siege lasting three years. During that time Alboin turned his attention to Tuscany, but signs of factionalism among his supporters and Alboin's diminishing control over his army increasingly began to manifest themselves. Alboin was assassinated on 28 June 572, in a coup d'état instigated by the Byzantines. It was organized by the king's servant, Helmichis, with the support of Alboin's wife, Rosamund, daughter of the Gepid king whom Alboin had killed some years earlier. The coup failed in the face of opposition from a majority of the Lombards, who elected Cleph as Alboin's successor, forcing Helmichis and Rosamund to flee to Ravenna under imperial protection. Alboin's death deprived the Lombards of the only leader who could have kept the newborn Germanic entity together, the last in the line of hero-kings who had led the Lombards through their migrations from the vale of the Elbe to Italy. For many centuries following his death Alboin's heroism and his success in battle were celebrated in Saxon and Bavarian epic poetry. ************************** Foundation for Medieval Genealogy- m firstly ([556/60]) CHLODESINDIS, daughter of CHROTHACHAR I [Clotaire] King of the Franks & his third wife Ingund (-before [567]). Gregory of Tours names Clothsind as the daughter of King Clotaire & his wife Ingund, specifying that she married Alboin King of the Lombards. The "Origo Gentis Langobardorum" names "Flutsuinda…filia Flothario regis Francorum" as the first wife of Albuin. The "Historia Langobardorum" names "Ludusenda…filia Flothari regis" as the first wife of Alboin. Paulus Diaconus names "Chlotharius rex Francorum, Chlotsuindam ei suam filiam" as wife of Alboin. King Alboin & his first wife had one child: 1. ALBSUINDA (-after 572). The "Origo Gentis Langobardorum" names "Albsuinda" as the daughter of Albuin & his first wife. Paulus Diaconus names "Alpsuindam" as the daughter of Alboin & his first wife. The "Origo Gentis Langobardorum records that, after the murder of Rosamundis, "Longinus præfectus" sent "Albsuinda filia Albuin regis" to Constantinople. m secondly ([567]) ROSAMUNDIS, daughter of CUNIMUNDUS King of the Gepids. The "Origo Gentis Langobardorum" records the marriage of Albuin to "Rosemunda filia Cunimundi" after killing her father in battle. Theophylactus records that "Longobardicæ gentis principem…Alboinum" married "adolescentulam Conimundi Gepidarum regis filiam." Paulus Diaconus names "filiam [Cunimundum] Rosimundam" as second wife of Alboin, also reporting that he married her after killing her father in battle. Gregory of Tours records that Alboin King of the Lombards married his second wife soon after he had killed her father, that "she loathed her husband as a result" and poisoned him "for she had become enamoured of one of his servants" with whom she fled before they were both caught and put to death. According to Paulus Diaconus, she incited the murder of her husband by his own men. The "Origo Gentis Langobardorum" records that Albuin was killed in Verona by "Hilmichis et Rosemunda uxore sua per consilium Peritheo", before she was poisoned herself with Hilmichis by "Longinus præfectus."
