- Title Of Nobility: 2nd Countess of Huntingdon
- LifeSketch: Maud, or Matilda, was the queen consort of King David I of Scotland. She was the great-niece of William the Conqueror and the granddaughter of Siward, Earl of Northumbria. Her parents were Waltheof, the Anglo-Saxon Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton, and his Norman wife Judith of Lens. Her father was the last of the major Anglo-Saxon earls to remain powerful after the Norman conquest of England in 1066. Her mother was William the Conqueror's niece. Through her ancestors, the Counts of Boulogne, Maud also was a descendant of Alfred the Great and Charles the Bald, and a cousin of Godfrey of Bouillon. Maud married Simon de Senlis (or St Liz) in about 1090. Earlier, her great-uncle William the Conqueror had tried to get Maud's mother, Judith, to marry Simon. Simon received the honour of Huntingdon (whose lands stretched across much of eastern England) probably in right of his wife from William Rufus before the end of the year 1090. Maud and Simon had three known children: Matilda of St Liz (Maud), who married first, Robert Fitz Richard of Tonbridge, and second, Saer De Quincy; Simon of St Liz; and Saint Waltheof of Melrose. Maud's first husband Simon died sometime after 1111, and Maud next married David, the brother-in-law of Henry I of England, in 1113. Through this marriage, David gained control over Maud's vast estates in England to add to his own lands in Cumbria and Strathclyde. David and Maud had four children (two sons and two daughters): Malcolm, who died young; Henry; Claricia, who never married; and Hodierna, who also never married. In 1124, David became King of Scots. Maud's two sons by different fathers, Simon and Henry, would later vie for the Earldom of Huntingdon. Maud died in 1130 or 1131 and was buried at Scone Abbey in Perthshire, but she appears in a charter of dubious origin dated 1147. Maud of Huntingdon appears as a character in Elizabeth Chadwick's novel "The Winter Mantle" (2003), as well as Alan Moore's novel "Voice of the Fire" (1995) and Nigel Tranter's novel "David the Prince" (1980). -- Wikiwand: Maud, Countess of Huntingdon

- Father: Eorcenberht of KENT
- Mother: Seaxburh QUEEN OF KENT
- Birth: ABT 637, Kingdom of Kent, Anglia
- Killed by King Ecgberht: killed by his cousin King Egbert, who had to pay wergild (damages) to his sister Domne Eafe
- Title Of Nobility: Prince of the Kingdom of Kent
- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy ii) ÆTHELBERHT (-[664/73], bur Romsey Abbey308). William of Malmesbury names "Ethelred" and "Egelbirt" as sons of King Ecgberht's uncle Eormenred, recording that the brothers were kept at the court of their cousin Ecgberht King of Kent but later murdered on his orders[311]. ***************** Wikipedia Saints Æthelred and Æthelberht (also Ethelred, Ethelbert) according to the Kentish royal legend (attested in the 11th century) were princes of the Kingdom of Kent who were murdered in around AD 669, and later commemorated as saints and martyrs. Their story forms an important element in the legend of Saint Mildrith, because the monastery of Minster in Thanet is said to have been founded in atonement for the crime. Historical context King Eorcenberht of Kent seized the rule of Kent in 640 in precedence to his elder brother Eormenred. Both were sons of Eadbald of Kent (r. c. 616–640). The legend, contained in a Latin Passio, tells that Eormenred and his wife Oslafa had several children including the two sons Aethelred and Aethelberht, and a daughter Eormenbeorg, also known as Domne Eafe. Eafe married Merewalh, ruler of the Maegonsaetan, a people situated in the west Midlands in the Shropshire area. King Eorcenberht married Seaxburh, daughter of King Anna of East Anglia, and ruled as a Christian king: he was the first ruler to order the abandonment and destruction of idols throughout his kingdom, and to establish the forty days' fast of Lent to be observed by royal authority (Bede, Ecclesiastical History iii,8). He had two sons, Ecgberht and Hlothhere, and two daughters, Eormenhild and Eorcongota. On Eorconberht's death of the plague in 664, Ecgberht succeeded him as King of Kent. The legend Main article: Kentish Royal Legend See also: Domne Eafe § The legend According to the legend, the princes were very pious Christian youths and lived at Eastry, Kent, at a royal dwelling belonging to their cousin King Egberht. (It is likely that such a residence existed, for Sir Frank Stenton pointed out that the placename Eastry, comparable to Surrey in formation, represented an early administrative centre.) A royal retainer named Thunor wished to secure the succession of King Ecgberht from a possible rival claim by these youths. He therefore had them secretly murdered, and their bodies hidden beneath the royal seat in the Hall at Eastry. After they were missed, but nowhere found, the crime was revealed by a column of light which appeared shining above the place of concealment. When King Egberht learned of the crime he was filled with sorrow and remorse at the act which had been done in his name, and planned to have the bodies buried at Canterbury. However, the people charged with the task of taking the bodies there found it impossible to move them. After these efforts the king took advice from his religious leaders, who recommended that he have them taken to Wakering in the Kingdom of Essex for burial, where a monastery already existed. The site was probably Great Wakering, not many miles away from the possibly royal burial-site of Prittlewell, Essex. With this new destination the bodies consented to be moved, and were venerated in their final resting-place as royal Christian martyrs. At about this time Egberht's mother Queen Seaxburh founded her own double monastery at Minster in Sheppey, on the south bank of the Thames Estuary nearly opposite Wakering. The monastery at Reculver was founded in 669. Ecgberht then founded the monastery of Minster in Thanet, to be ruled over by the sister of the murdered princes. She was the mother of Saint Mildrith, who afterwards succeeded her as abbess. Some sources also claim that another monastery was established at Eastry for the same reason, over which a sister of Mildrith's ruled as abbess. Another sister, Mildburg, remained among the Magonsaetan and governed the monastery of Much Wenlock in Shropshire. In addition to the Latin Passio (edited by David Rollason) a version of the story appears in Roger of Wendover's Flores Historiarum (Flowers of History), compiled in the early thirteenth century. Excavations at Great Wakering have recently uncovered a site of Middle Saxon occupation including a fragment of ornamented stone-sculpture, which may derive from the place named in the legend.

- Title Of Nobility: Queen of the English
- 3RD WIFE OF EDWARD THE ELDER: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: Eadgifu of Kent was the daughter of Sigehelm, Ealdorman of Kent. She was born in 903 or before. Her father died at the Battle of the Holme in 902, either when she was an infant or shortly before her birth. Eadgifu (also Edgiva or Ediva) married Edward the Elder, King of the English, about 919, becoming his 3rd wife and Queen of the English. Edward was considerably older than her (about 29 years) and began his reign as king in 899, before Eadgifu was even born. Together they had 3 children: - Edmund I of England, later King Edmund I - Eadred of England, later King Eadred - Saint Eadburh of Winchester A 4th child mentioned, a daughter named Eadgifu, is likely the same Eadgifu born to Edward's 2nd wife Ælfflæd, who would have still been young, under age, when Eadgifu became her step-mother. Edward died in 924, leaving Eadgifu with small children. Eadgifu herself survived Edward by over 40 years, dying during the reign of her grandson Edgar. Æthelstan became king in 924, after the death of his father and brother, and during his 15 year reign Eadgifu is not recorded. Dowager Queen Eadgifu and her children likely remained at court, for her stepson King Æthelstan striped her of her properties in Cooling, and her children would have still needed the education due young princes. Æthelstan died in 939 and Eadgifu's oldest son Edmund became king. During his reign, his mother, the Dowager Queen, was held in high regard, even above his own wives. Eadgifu survived all of her children, King Edmund the Magnificent who died in 946, King Eadred succeeded his brother but died in 955 at which time the throne went to Edmund's son Eadwig. Her daughter Eadburgh died in 960. Eadgifu's oldest grandson King Eadwig succeeded to the throne in 955. Apparently Eadgifu favored his younger brother Edgar, for King Eadwig deprived his grandmother of her lands. He died in 959 and was succeeded by his younger brother King Edgar the Peaceful. King Edgar restored his grandmother's properties and is said to have gifted her lavishly. Dowager Queen Eadgifu is last documented on 966 witnessing a charter and died sometime thereafter. During her lifetime Eadgifu saw the reign of 7 kings: her husband King Edward, stepsons King Ælfweard and King Æthelstan, her sons King Edmund and King Eadred, her grandsons King Eadwig and King Eadgar. She was known as a supporter of saintly churchmen and a benefactor of churches. From website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eadgifu_of_Kent

- Occupation: Abbess Minster-in-Sheppey and Abbess of Ely, 675
- Title Of Nobility: Queen of Mercia, BET 657 AND 675, Kingdom of Mercia, Anglo Saxon England
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Saint Eormenhild (or Ermenilda, Ermenildis, Ermengild, all meaning "battle-great", from eormen- "great", hild- "battle") (d. about 700/703) is a 7th-century Anglo-Saxon saint venerated in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. Life She features in the genealogies of various 11th and 12th century versions of the Kentish Royal Legend. These describe her as the daughter of King Eorcenberht of Kent and St. Seaxburh of Ely, and wife to Wulfhere of Mercia,[1] with whom she had a daughter, St. Wærburh, and a son, Coenred. Eormenhild became a nun after her husband died in 675, and eventually became abbess of Minster-in-Sheppey and Ely consecutively. There are almost no contemporary records for her life. When discussing Wulfhere, Bede mentions neither she nor her daughter Wærburh. However, her name is mentioned as an abbess in a (copy of a) charter of King Wihtred of Kent, dated 699, along with three other abbesses present at the occasion when the charter was issued: "Irminburga, Aeaba et Nerienda".[2] Her feast day is 13 February.

- Father: Eorcenberht of KENT
- Mother: Seaxburh QUEEN OF KENT
- Birth: 650, Kent, England
- Title Of Nobility: King of Kent with his nephew Eadric
- Hlothere: It is not know precisely when it happens, but by the later years of his reign, Hlothere controls Lundenwic (London), the first Kentish king to do so since 616. He maintains a hall there and his presence suggests that he has also regained Suthrige for Kent. By this time he has also agreed to share power with his dispossessed and ambitious nephew, Eadric. This is the first time that such an experiment has been attempted in the kingdom, and it leads to disaster.
- LifeSketch: Hlothhere (Old English: Hloþhere; died 6 February 685) was a King of Kent who ruled from 673 to 685. He succeeded his brother Ecgberht I in 673. He must have come into conflict with Mercia, since in 676 the Mercian king Æthelred invaded Kent and caused great destruction; according to Bede, even churches and monasteries were not spared, and Rochester was laid waste. Hlothhere's rule survived this onslaught, however. He appears for a time to have reigned jointly with his nephew Eadric, son of Ecgberht I, since a code of laws still extant was issued under both their names. In 685, Eadric went into exile and led the South Saxons against Hlothhere, who was defeated and died of his wounds. The above information is derived from Bede, but Hlothhere is the earliest Kentish king for whom genuine charters survive. One charter known from a 15th-century copy, is precisely dated to 1 April 675 in the first year of Hlothhere's reign, which conflicts with accession date attributed to him by Bede. The charter of 679 survives in its original form. Two further charters attributed to Hlothere (S1648, S1648a), appear to have been altered copies of charters of Swæfheard (S10) and Swæfberht (S11) (Kelly 1995). A law code, the Law of Hlothhere and Eadric, is jointly attributed to him and his successor Eadric.
- Death: (Date and Place unknown)
- Burial: St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury, England

- LifeSketch: Osbeorn, also spelled Osbjorn and Osbert (died c. 1054), given the nickname Bulax, was the son of Siward, Earl of Northumbria (died 1055). He is one of two known sons of Siward, believed to be the older.[1][2] While it is normally assumed he was the son of Siward's Bamburgh wife Ælfflæd,[2] it has been suggested by William Kapelle that Osbeorn's mother was not Ælfflæd.[3] The nickname "Bulax" probably represents the Old Norse term for "Poleaxe".[4] According to the most reliable sources, he died at the Battle of the Seven Sleepers, fought somewhere in Scotland between Siward and Mac Bethad mac Findlaích, King of the Scots, in 1054. Under this year, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, recension D, related that: "At this time earl Siward went with a great army into Scotland, with both fleet and a land-force; and fought against the Scots, and put to flight the king Mac Bethad, and slew all that were best in the land, and brought thence much war-spoil, such as no man obtained before; And there were slain his son Osbeorn, and his sister's son Siward, and some of his housecarls, and also of the king's, on the day of the Seven Sleepers (July 27)." [5] This battle was fought somewhere in Scotland north of the Firth of Forth, and is known variously as the "Battle of the Seven Sleepers" or the "Battle of Dunsinane".[6] The location Dunsinane is not accepted as historical by modern historians, resting as it does on later medieval accounts. The earliest mention of Dunsinane as the location of the battle being the early 15th-century account by Andrew of Wyntoun.[7] In recension C of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the names of the slain are omitted, an omission repeated by the Chronicle of John of Worcester.[8] Henry of Huntingdon related that Osbeorn had been sent to Scotland ahead of Siward: "[Siward] sent his son to acquire Scotland. And when they reported to his father that he had been slain in battle, [Siward] said, 'Did he receive the mortal wound in front of his body, or behind?' The messengers said. 'In front'. And he replied: 'I rejoice wholly, for I would deem myself or my son worthy of no meaner death'. Siward therefore marched into Scotland and conquered the king battle ... "[9] Another legendary account, in the Vita et Passio Waldevi, a hagiography of Osbeorn's brother Waltheof, claimed that Osbeorn, called "Osbert Bulax", was killed by Northumbrians while his father was absent in Scotland.[10] The accounts in Henry of Huntingdon and the Vita et Passio Waldevi are thought to be derived from a saga devoted to the life of Earl Siward.[11] Geoffrey Gaimar's account related activity in 1053, an agreement made between Siward and Mac Bethad, but a death of Osbeorn is not mentioned.[12] Osbeorn's death left Siward's legacy in danger. When he died the following year, his only surviving son Waltheof (Osbeorns baby brother) was underage and thus did not succeed immediately to the whole territory ruled by Siward, Northumbria going instead to Tostig Godwinson.[13] Osbeorn Bulax was fictionalised as Young Siward in the tragedy Macbeth by William Shakespeare https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osbeorn_Bulax --------------------------------------------------------------- Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, recension D states: (translated) "At this time earl Siward went with a great army into Scotland, with both fleet and a land-force; and fought against the Scots, and put to flight the king Macbeth, and slew all that were best in the land, and brought thence much war-spoil, such as no man obtained before; And there were slain his son Osbjorn, and his sister's son Siward, and some of his housecarls, and also of the king's, on the day of the Seven Sleepers (27 July)." -------------------------------------------------------------------- A description of Osbjorn's death and Siward's reaction, taken from the Historia Anglorum of Henry of Huntingdon Chroniques Anglo-Normandes, vol. ii, p. 104 "Around this time Siward, the mighty earl of Northumbria, almost a giant in stature, very strong mentally and physically, sent his son to conquer Scotland. When they came back and reported to his father that he had been killed in battle, he asked 'Did he receive his fatal wound in the front or the back of his body?' The messengers said 'In the front'. Then he said, 'That makes me very happy, for I consider no other death worthy for me or my son'. Then Siward set out for Scotland, and defeated the king in battle, destroyed the whole realm, and having destroyed it, subjected it to himself". ------------------------------------------------------------------- Foundation for Medieval Genealogy: SIWARD (-York 26 Mar 1055, bur Galmanho Monastery [=York St Mary's][469]). The Vita et Passio Waldevi Comitis names “Siuuardus” as son of “Beorn cognomento Beresune…filius ursi…Dacus natione”[470]. A Dane, he may have come to England with the invasion of Knud of Denmark in 1015. He was recognised as Earl of Northumbria after the murder of his wife's uncle in 1041[471]. The Annales Dunelmenses record that "comes Siward" invaded Scotland with a large army in 1046 and briefly expelled "rege Macbeod", the king recovering his realm when Siward withdrew[472]. He actively supported Edward "the Confessor" King of England against Earl Godwin and his sons in 1051. Florence of Worcester records that "dux Northhymbrorum Siwardus" defeated "rege Scottorum Macbeotha" in battle, dated to 1054, and installed "Malcolmum regis Cumbrorum filium" in his place[473]. The Annales Dunelmenses record that "Siwardus" put "Macbeth" to flight in 1054 and installed "Malcolmum rege" in the following year[474]. m ÆLFLED, daughter of EALDRED Earl of Northumbria & his [first/second] wife ---. Simeon of Durham names "Elfleda daughter of Earl Aldred" as wife of Siward and mother of Waltheof[475]. Siward & his wife had two children: i) OSBEORN (-killed in battle 27 Jul 1054). The primary source which confirms his name has not yet been identified. He was killed fighting King Macbeth of Scotland with his father. Florence of Worcester records that "dux Northhymbrorum Siwardus" defeated "rege Scottorum Macbeotha" in battle, dated to 1054, but that "suus filius" was killed in the battle[476]. ii) WALTHEOF (-executed St Giles's Hill, Winchester 31 May 1076, bur Crowland Abbey465). http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLAND,%20AngloSaxon%20nobility.htm#Siwarddied1055B .
