- LifeSketch: Fearadach Fionn Feachtnach, his son, the 102nd Moanrch of Ireland, 22 years, died at his regal city of Teamhair, A.D. 36. He was a just and truthful Prince and caused truth and justice to be functionally observed and administered during his whole reign, for which he was nicknamed Fionn-Fiatach, signifying in Irish, truth and integrity. It was in his time that the famous and upright judge Maon flourished, who had a chain hasp or ring of such rare virtue that when it was put about the neck of any judge or any witness, whatsoever, at the time the one was to give sentence or the other to expose an oath, if either swerved a little from the right then presently it clasped and wrung them so close, that to avoid present death by strangling they retracted openly before all the spectators what they had so unkindly done amiss; whence proceeded that Irish proverbial wish among the Irish that he had Maon's Ring about his neck when they suspect the truth or integrity of any person.

- Father: Roger Bigod of NORFOLK
- Mother: Ida DE TOSNY Countess of Norfolk
- Birth: Thetford, Norfolk, England
- Christening: 1186, Thetford, Norfolk, England
- Also known as: Sir Hugh Bigod
- Occupation: Judiciar of England
- Signing of the Magna Carta: One of only 25 sureties of the signing of the Magna Carta of King John, 15 JUN 1215, Runnymeade Meadow, Windsor, Surrey, England
- Title Of Nobility: 3rd Earl of Norfolk, AFT 1221, Norfolk, England
- LifeSketch: Hugh Bigod (c. 1182 – 18 February 1225) was a member of the powerful early Norman Bigod family and was for a short time the 3rd Earl of Norfolk. He was born c. 1182, the eldest son of Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk by his wife Ida de Tosny. Career In 1215 he was one of the twenty-five sureties of Magna Carta of King John. He succeeded to his father’s estates (including Framlingham Castle) in 1221. Marriage and children In late 1206 or early 1207, Hugh married Maud Marshal (1192 - 27 March 1248), daughter of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke (1147–1219), Marshal of England, by his wife Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke. They had four, or possibly five, children: 1. Roger Bigod, 4th Earl of Norfolk (c. 1209-1270), died childless. 2. Hugh Bigod (1211–1266), Justiciar of England. Married Joan de Stuteville, by whom he had issue. 3. Isabel Bigod (c. 1212- 1250), married twice: Firstly to Gilbert de Lacy (son of Walter de Lacy, Lord of Meath and his wife Margaret de Braose), by whom she had issue; Secondly to John FitzGeoffrey, Lord of Shere, by whom she had issue, including Maud FitzJohn, and Joan FitzJohn who married Theobald le Botiller, and from whom descended the Irish Earls of Ormond. 4. Ralph Bigod (born c. 1215) [5. Simon? ...] Contrary to the assertion of Frederick Lewis Weis, Ancestral Roots, there is no evidence for a fourth son called Simon Bigod. A man of that name appears as a witness to one of Earl Hugh's charters (Morris, HBII 2), but as the eighteenth name in a list of twenty, suggesting no close connection to the main branch of the family. He is also named among the knights who surrendered to King John at Framlingham Castle in 1216. He was a probably a descendant of Hugh or William Bigod, half-brothers to Earl Roger II Bigod. Simon le Bigot is recognized as the third son of Hugh Bigod in Francis Blomefield, 'North Erpingham Hundred: Felbrigg', in An Essay Towards A Topographical History of the County of Norfolk: Volume 8 (London, 1808), pp. 107–119. British History Online http://www.british-history.ac.uk/topographical-hist-norfolk/vol8/pp107-119 [accessed 2 June 2019]. He is also recognized by Gary Boyd Roberts in The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States Vol 1 p528. Death Hugh died on 18 February 1225. Very soon after Hugh's death, his widow Maud remarried William de Warenne, 5th Earl of Surrey. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Bigod,_3rd_Earl_of_Norfolk ................................................................................... “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “HUGH LE BIGOD, 5th Earl of Norfolk, hereditary Steward of the Household, hereditary Warden of Romford Forest, son and heir. He married probably before Lent 1207 MAUD MARSHAL, eldest daughter of William Marshal, Knt., 4th Earl of Pembroke (or Strigoil), hereditary Master Marshal, by Isabel, daughter of Richard Fitz Gilbert (nicknamed "Strongbow"), 2nd Earl of Pembroke (or Strigoil) [see MARSHAL 3 for her ancestry]. They had four sons, 1. Roger, Knt. [6th Earl of Norfolk], 2. Hugh, Knt., 3. Ralph, Knt., and 4. possibly William, and one daughter, 5. Isabel. In 1215 he and his father joined the confederacy of the barons against the king. Both father and son were selected to be one of the twenty-five barons elected to guarantee the observance of Magna Carta, signed by King John 15 June 1215. In consequence, Hugh and his father were among the barons excommunicated by Pope Innocent III 16 Dec. 1215. He made homage for the Earldom of Norfolk 2 August 1221. In the period, 1221-5, he granted the homage and service of Hervey the baker and the tenement he held in Heveningharn, Suffolk to Sibton Abbey, Suffolk. In the same period, he granted the manor of Stockton, Norfolk to Hamo Lenveise. In the same period, he granted land in Mettingham, Suffolk to John Fitz Augustine. HUGH LE BIGOD, 5th Earl of Norfolk, died between 11 Feb. and 18 Feb. 1224/5. In May 1225 his widow, Maud, granted land in Stockton, Norfolk to her son, Ralph le Bigod. Maud married (2nd) before 13 October 1225 (as his 2nd wife) WILLIAM DE WARENNE, 6th Earl of Surrey [see WARENNE 8], son and heir of Hamelin, 5th Earl of Surrey, Vicomte of Touraine, by Isabel, daughter and heiress of William de Warenne, 3rd Earl of Surrey [see WARENNE 7 for his ancestry]. They had one son, John, Knt. [7th Earl of Surrey], and one daughter, Isabel. In 1226-7 Mary daughter of William de Newmarch, of Cateby, Yorkshire, granted to Maud Bigot, countess of Warenne and Norfolk, the hermitage of St. Margaret's, Cateby on the Don, with land in Eadrnunde croft, and common of pasture for the cattle of the hermitage, rendering yearly to the grantor at Easter white gloves. In 1227 he joined the Earl of Cornwall at Stamford in his revolt against the king, but at Christmas was with the king at York. In 1229 he was about the make a voyage on the king's service. He was heir in 1234 to his sister, Isabel de Warenne, widow of Gilbert de l'Aigle. In 1236 he acted as Butler at the Coronation of Queen Eleanor of Provence, in place of his son-in-law, Hugh, Earl of Arundel. In 1238 he was cited to appear before Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln, because mass has been celebrated in the earl's hall at Grantham, Lincolnshire. SIR WILLIAM DE WARENNE, 6th Earl of Surrey, died testate in London 27 May 1240, and was buried in the priory church of Lewes, Sussex. In the period, 1240-6 his widow, Maud, granted a tenement in Thorne, Yorkshire to Richard de Otley her chaplain. In 1241 she granted Sir Adam de Newmarch and his heirs a water-course and ditch in Balne, Yorkshire from Flaxcleyker to the Dike to be 8 feet wide and 4 feet deep. In the period, 1241-5, she granted land in Stockton, Norfolk to her son, Ralph le Bigod. Maud was co-heiress in 1245 to her brother, Anselm Marshal, 9th Earl of Pembroke, by which she inherited the marshalcy of England and honour of Chepstow, Monmouthshire. In 1246-8 she confirmed the union of Kilkenny Abbey with Duiske Abbey. In 1246-8 she granted three silver marks of annual rent to St. George's Nunnery, Thetford, Norfolk. Maud, Marshal of England, Countess of Norfolk and Warenne, died 27 (or 29) March 1248.

- LifeSketch: negotiator for the release of Richard from prison; assent to Magna Carter leader (lynndavis45). Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk (1095–1177) was the second son of Roger Bigod (also known as Roger Bigot) (died 1107), sheriff of Norfolk and royal advisor, and Adeliza, daughter of Robert de Todeni. After the death of his elder brother William, who perished without issue in the sinking of the White Ship on 26 November 1120, Hugh was allowed to inherit his brother's office of royal steward and many estates in East Anglia. He also succeeded his aunt Albreda, heiress of her brother Berengar de Tosny, with lands in Yorkshire and in Normandy. Hugh became Constable of Norwich Castle in 1122. ... Though defeated and compelled to surrender his castles, Bigod kept his lands and his earldom, and lived at peace with Henry II until his death reportedly in 1177 in Palestine. On 1 March 1177, his son Roger Bigod appealed to the king on a dispute with his stepmother. Hugh was dead at the time of Roger's appeal, the date of his father's death is fixed 'ante caput jejunii', (i.e. before 9 March). If, then, he died in Palestine, his death must have taken place in the preceding year, 1176, to allow time for the arrival of the news in England. Henry II took advantage of Roger's appeal to seize upon the late Earl's treasure. Earl Hugh had possessed vast estates, which he inherited, and was also the recipient of the third penny of judicial fines levied in the county of Norfolk by right of his earldom. Marriage and family Bigod married firstly to Juliane de Vere (died c. 1199). She was the daughter of Aubrey de Vere II and Adeliza de Clare, the daughter of Gilbert Fitz Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Clare. The marriage was dissolved before 1156. They had one son: 1. Roger Bigod, 2nd Earl of Norfolk (born c. 1144–5). He married Ida de Tosny, had issue. Bigod married secondly Gundreda (c. 1135–1200), daughter of Roger de Beaumont, 2nd Earl of Warwick. They had two children: 1. Hugh Bigod (born c. 1156) 2. William Hugh Bigod (born 1168) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Bigod,_1st_Earl_of_Norfolk ..................................................................................... “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “IDA DE TONY. Prior to marriage, Ida was a mistress of King Henry II of England [see ENGLAND 4], by whom she was the mother of William Longespée, Knt., Earl of Salisbury [see LONGESPEE 5]. She married about Christmas 1181 ROGER LE BIGOD, Knt., 4th Earl of Norfolk, hereditary Steward of the Household, Privy Councillor, Keeper of Hertford Castle, 1191, Judge in the King's Court, 1195, 1196, 1199, 1202, Chief Judge in the King's Court, 1197, Warden of Romford Forest, 1200, son and heir of Hugh le Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk, by his 1st wife, Juliane, daughter of Aubrey de Vere, of Great Addington and Drayton, Northamptonshire and Hedingham, Essex. He was born before 1140. They had five sons, Hugh [5th Earl of Norfolk], William, Roger, John, and Ralph, and three daughters, Mary, Margaret, and Ida. He bore the standard of St. Edmund at the Battle of Fornham in 1173. On the death of Roger's father in 1176, he and his stepmother, Gundred, appealed to the king on a dispute touching the inheritance, the countess pressing the claims of her own son. King Henry II subsequently seized the Bigod lands into his own hands. During the remainder of the reign, it seems Roger had little power, even if his succession was allowed. In the period, 1177-89, he confirmed the gift of Walter son of William de Shaldingfield his knight made to Sibton Abbey, Suffolk of 41 acres of land in Bruisyard, Suffolk. In the same period, he granted Reiner Fitz Berengar and Richard his son land in Friday Street, London. On King Richard I's accession in 1189, Roger was confirmed in the earldom of Norfolk and in the stewardship of the royal household. He was also appointed an ambassador to King Philippe of France to arrange for Richard's coming crusade. In the period, 1189-93, Roger granted 3 marks of annual rent in Walton, Norfolk to Reading Abbey for the health of his soul and that of his wife, Ida. In the same period, he granted the land of Geoffrey Fitz Geoffrey to West Dereham Abbey. In the period, 1189-1202, he granted William Fitz Richard a certain member of the manor of Notley, Essex. In the period, 1189-1202, he granted to the men of Acle, Norfolk that they shall have hereditarily their turbaries. In the period, 1189-1204, Reynold de Thorp granted him and his heirs six acres of land Hervey the baker held of his fee in Heveningham, Suffolk; in the same period Earl Roger granted the same property to Hervey the baker and his heirs for the free annual service of 12d. payable to the grantor and his heirs and liable in Id. in the pound towards scutage. In the period, 1189-1217, he granted Sibton Abbey 21 acres of land in Wrabton (in Yoxford) and Kelsale, Suffolk, in exchange for the same amount of the monks' demesne which Roger enclosed within his park at Kelsale, Suffolk. In the period, 1189-1221, he grant to Barlings Abbey all his right in Holy Trinity, Bungay. In the period, 1189-1221, he granted to Anketil son of Anketil de Bungay land in Halvergate, Norfolk. In the period, 1189-1221, he granted Dodnash Priory his mill of Flatford in East Bergholt, Norfolk. In the same period, he granted to Dodnash Priory the homage and service of Adam Burris. In 1191 he was put in charge of Hereford Castle. In 1193 he was summoned with certain other barons and prelates to attend the chancellor into Germany, where negotiations were being carried on to effect King Richard's release from captivity. The same year he confirmed the covenant between Wymonclham Abbey and Ralph de Melves, his knight. In the period, 1193-8, he granted Reading Abbey three marks of rent from the church of Finchingfield. In 1194 he was present at the great council held at Nottingham. At the re-coronation of King Richard I 17 April 1194, he assisted in bearing the canopy. He served as a justiciar, fines being levied before him in the fifth year of Richard's reign and from the seventh onwards. He continued to act as a judge in King John's reign. In 1198 he confirmed earlier gifts to Felixstone Priory. In the period, 1199-1202, he granted Colne Priory the church of Dovercourt and the chapel of Harwich. In the period, 1199-1221, he granted Hinlding Priory the chapel of All Saints, Hacheston, Suffolk. In the same period, he granted Carrow Nunnery two sheaves of the tithe of Halvergate, Norfolk. In the period, 1199-1221, he quitclaimed to Ely Cathedral all actions and plaints in the hundreds of Carlford, Wilford, and Loes, Suffolk. In the period, 1199-1221, he granted Leiston Abbey the church of St. Mary, Middleton. In 1200 he was sent with other nobles to escort his wife's kinsman, William the Lion, King of Scots to do homage to King John at Lincoln. The same year William Fitz Alan agreed to hold for the life of the earl half a fee in Theberton, Suffolk. In 1209 his half-brother, Hugh le Bigod, quitclaimed to him all his right to the lands of Acle, Earsham, Halvergate, Little Framingham, and South Walsham, Norfolk, and Settrington, Yorkshire, in exchange for £30 worth of lands. He was imprisoned for unknown causes in 1213. He accompanied the king to Poitou in 1214. The following year he joined the confederacy of the barons against the king. He was one of the twenty-five barons elected to guarantee the observance of Magna Carta, signed by King John 15 June 1215. In consequence he was among the barons excommunicated by Pope Innocent III 16 Dec. 1215. His lands were forfeited and cruelly ravaged by the king. After the accession of King Henry III, he returned to his allegiance, and had order for the restoration of his lands in September 1217. SIR ROGER LE BIGOD, 4th Earl of Norfolk, died in 1221, before 2 August. Children of Roger le Bigod, Knt., by Ida de Tony: i. HUGH LE BIGOD, 5th Earl of Norfolk [see next]. ii. - Life Sketch: Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk (1095–1177) was the second son of Roger Bigod (also known as Roger Bigot) (died 1107), sheriff of Norfolk and royal advisor, and Adeliza, daughter of Robert de Todeni. He was born before 1140. They had five sons, Hugh [5th Earl of Norfolk], William, Roger, John, and Ralph, and three daughters, Mary, Margaret, and Ida. Maminot" in Kent, all under "Nova Placita & Noue Conuentiones"[965]. m as her second husband, JULIANE de Vere, formerly wife of HUGH Bigod later Earl of Norfolk, daughter of AUBREY de Vere Lord of Hedingham & his wife --- ([1110/22]-after 1185). “Rogerus Bigot comes Norfolchiæ” donated property to Colne priory, for the souls of “Hugone Bigot fratris mei et comitissæ Julianæ matris meæ et Idæ uxoris meæ”, by undated charter, witnessed by “Hugone Bigot filio meo…”[966]. The Rotuli de Dominabus of 1185 records property “Duvercurt” held by “comitissa Juliana…soror comitis Albrici”[967]. The Complete Peerage says that “for the souls of her father and mother and of her husbands Hugh Bigoth and Walkelin Maminot she granted Begham Abbey land in Brockley” but does not quote the original[968]. According to the Complete Peerage, she was still living in 1185, citing a grant by “Juliana comitissa” at Dovercourt to Colne Priory, witnessed by “Alberico comite et Alberico filius eius”, adding “which being notified to Gilbert Bishop of London was not later than 1189”[969]. Walkelin & his wife had one child: i) WALKELIN Maminot ([1125/38]-[1190]). The Annals of Bermondsey record that “Walkelinus Mammynot filius Walkelini Mammynot” donated revenue “de molendino de Depforde” to Bermondsey in 1157[970]. The Bermondsey Chronicle records that “Walkelinus Mammynot filius Walkelini Mammynot” donated revenue “de molendino de Depford” to Bermondsey in 1157[971]. Military fee certifications in the Red Book of the Exchequer, in 1166, record the names of those providing knights for military service with "Walkelini Mamignot" in Kent[972]. The Red Book of the Exchequer refers to "Walkelin Mamignot xviii l, et de novo i m" in Kent in [1167/68][973]. The Bermondsey Chronicle records that “Walkelinus Maymynot filius Walkelini Mammynot” donated revenue “de dominio de Cippenham in Dilleherst…etiam ecclesiam de Berlyng” to Bermondsey in 1168[974]. The Annals of Bermondsey record the same donation, adding that it was confirmed by Kings Henry II, Edward III, Richard II and Henry IV[975]. A later passage in the same source records the confirmation in 1174 by King Henry II of the donation of "ecclesiam de Bierlyng" by "Walkelinus Mammynot"[976]. The Red Book of the Exchequer refers to "Wakelin Mamignot xxvii l, de novo xx s" in Kent in [1171/72][977]. The 1176/77 Pipe Roll names "Walkelinus Maminot" in Kent[978]. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1190/91], records "heredes Walkelini Mamignot" paying "xiv l x s, xxvii milites" in Kent. http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/enguntlo.htm#WalkelinMaminot

- LifeSketch: Roger Bigod (c. 1144/1150 – 1221) was the son of Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk and his first wife, Juliana de Vere. Although his father died 1176 or 1177, Roger did not succeed to the earldom of Norfolk until 1189 for his claim had been disputed by his stepmother for her sons by Earl Hugh in the reign of Henry II. Richard I confirmed him in his earldom and other honours, and also sent him as an ambassador to France in the same year. Roger inherited his father's office as royal steward. He took part in the negotiations for the release of Richard from prison, and after the king's return to England became a justiciar.During the Revolt of 1173–74, Roger remained loyal to the king while his father sided with the king's rebellious sons. Roger fought at the Battle of Fornham on 17 October 1173, where the royalist force defeated a rebel force led by Robert de Beaumont, 3rd Earl of Leicester. In most of the years of the reign of King John, the earl was frequently with the king or on royal business. Yet Roger was to be one of the leaders of the baronial party which obtained John's assent to Magna Carta, and his name and that of his son and heir Hugh II appear among the twenty-five barons who were to ensure the king's adherence to the terms of that document. The pair were excommunicated by the pope in December 1215, and in 1216 John marched to East Anglia with a force of mercenaries and laid siege to Roger's seat of Framlingham Castle. Bigod was away, but Framlingham's garrison has 26 knights, 20 sergeants-at-arms, 7 crossbowmen, 1 chaplain and 3 others, perhaps enough to hold out until Roger returned to command support. Yet the castle surrendered two days, most likely for political expediency. The loss of the castle was temporary (Bigod made peace with the regents of John's son Henry III in 1217) but Roger seems to have retired from public life after this time. He died in 1221, his lands intact, the Bigod powerhouse secured and himself a respected figure.Around Christmas 1181, Roger married Ida, apparently Ida de Tosny (or Ida de Toesny), and by her had a number of children including:1. Hugh Bigod, 3rd Earl of Norfolk who married in 1206/ 1207, Maud, a daughter of William Marshal2. William Bigod3. Ralph Bigod4. Roger Bigod5. Margery, married William de Hastings6. Mary Bigod, married Ralph fitz Robert7. Many historians, including Marc Morris have speculated that the couple had a third daughter, Alice, who married Aubrey de Vere IV, Earl of Oxford as his second wife. If so, the marriage would have been well within the bounds of consanguinity, for the couple would have been quite closely related, a daughter of the second earl of Norfolk being first cousin once removed to the second earl of Oxford.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Bigod,_2nd_Earl_of_Norfolk

Constance was one of the nine children of William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. She was born in Normandy, where her father was Duke. William of Jumièges, the monk who chronicled the 1066 Norman conquest of England, names Constance second among the daughters of King William and Queen Matilda. No source indicates the order of birth of the couple's daughters, however. In 1086, Constance's father invaded the Duchy of Brittany. Its Duke, Alan Fergant, was forced into submission, and a marriage was arranged between him and Constance, who was already nearly 30. Like her mother, Constance was an able administrator. William of Malmesbury, an early 12th century historian, wrote that her "severe and conservative manner" made Constance an unpopular duchess. According to his contemporary, Orderic Vitalis, however, Constance was caring, considerate, and well-liked by her subjects. William of Malmesbury alleges that her husband had their servants poison her. She died on 13 August 1090.

\-Matilda OF FLANDERS, Queen Consort of England
- Birth: 900, Rouen, Normandy, France
- Occupation: Duc
- Title Of Nobility: Count of Normandy
- Royal House: Normandy: (Date and Place unknown)
- LifeSketch: William Longsword was the son of Rollo, founder of the Rollonid dynasty that would become dukes of Normandy and after 1066, kings of England. In William's day, however, the Rollonid principality was still a fragile entity centered around Rouen and, in terms of Realpolitik, not extending far west of the Seine. Most of William's career was spent in relative obscurity, but in the late 930s he suddenly emerged onto the stage of Frankish royal politics, first because of his war with Arnulf of Flanders, and then because of his support for King Louis IV (d'Outremer) at a time when Louis' star seemed to be fading. In December 942, at the peak of his good relations with Louis, Arnulf called for a peace conference with William; there, William was murdered (traditionally, Arnulf is said to have arranged the murder). 5shellymk3@gmail.com Shelly shared-All the biographies that I have found on William state that he was born in either Rouen, Normandy, or Bayeux, Normandy, and that he was killed by followers of Arnulf of Flanders I, Dec. 17, 942, after leaving a "peace treaty" meeting with Arnulf on the Island of Picquiny (an island in the Somme River) in Picardy, Normandy. -- Find a Grave: William "Longsword" of Normandy I ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ William Longsword, also known as William I of Normandy and Guillaume Longue-Épée, was born about 893, the son of the Viking Rollo and his Christian wife Poppa of Bayeux, a member of the Frankish aristocracy. His father was pagan at the time of William's birth and was baptized a Christian in 912, by Franco, Archbishop of Rouen. It is likely that William was baptized then as well. William succeeded his father Rollo as ruler of Normandy in 927. Known now as "Duke of Normandy," during his lifetime that title was not in use, he was Jarl and Count of Rouen. In 933 he was besieged in Rouen by Riouf of Evreux and other Normans who believed he had become too "French." William put down the rebellion with a decisive victory, firmly establishing his authority over Normandy. While besieged he sent his pregnant concubine Sprota to safety in Bayeux, and there she gave birth to a son they named Richard. Between 935 and 940 William married Luitgarde of Vermandois, daughter of Herbert II Count of Vermandois. They did not have any children. William was ambushed and assassinated on 17 December 942 at Picquigny, while at a peace conference. His son Richard, though only 10 years old, succeeded him as the next ruler of Normandy. And a Danish text: Vilhelm I "Langsværd," af Normandiet (død 17. december 942) var jarl af Normandiet.

- LifeSketch: Ælfflæd was the daughter of Ealdred, Earl of Bernicia, and the granddaughter of Uchtred the Bold, Ealdorman of Northumbria. She was born in Bamburgh sometime before 1020, the name of her mother is not known. Simeon of Durham identifies 5 daughters of Ealdred and tells us there were 3 who were named "Aelfleda". There is no other record of 2 of the "Aelfledas". This leads to the conclusion that they died young. It is not uncommon to see the same name used multiple times in families of this time period. If a child died young, often the next child born of the same sex was given the same name. This is the 3rd born "Aelfleda", who would have been born after her sisters of the same name had died. She is the only daughter of this name to be found in sources other that that of Simeon of Durham, and the only daughter of this name to survive to adulthood. Ælfflæd (Aelfleda) also had 2 younger sisters named Ealdgyth (Aldgitha) and Etheldreda (Etheldritha). Simion goes on to say that this 3rd 'Aelfleda' "married earl Siward, by whom she became the mother of Waltheof ; and as this Aelfleda was countess, being the daughter of earl Aldred, and he the son of earl Ucthred and the daughter of bishop Aldun, — she laid claim to these lands following, as belonging to her by hereditary right: namely, Bemetun, Kymingeim, Eltun, Carltun, Heaclif, and He- seldene, which earl Siward her husband had given her ; and she gave to her son Waltheof the earldom of Northumberland, as it had been held by Waltheof s grandfather, earl Aldred." In 1033 Ælfflæd became the 2nd wife of Siward Björnsson, Earl of Northumbria, a powerful theng of King Cnut. The marriage strengthened Siward's position in Northumbria, so much so that he rose to become sub-ruler of most of northern England. Ælfflæd and Siward had 2 sons: - Osbjorn (Osbearne) who died in 1054 - Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria Osbjorn was much older than Waltheof and while many sources report him as the son of Ælfflæd, his mother was never identified in records, therefore, it is possible he was the son of Siward's 1st wife Godgifu. Waltheof, however, was definitively identified as the son of Ælfflæd. Oldest son Osbjorn died in battle against MacBeth in 1054. Siward died in 1055. Waltheof was but 10 years old at the time of his father's death. It is not recorded when Ælfflæd died, it is believed she survived her husband and continued to raise Waltheof. There is no record of Ælfflæd marrying 2nd time. Waltheof grew up to eventually become Earl of Northumbria himself. He married Judith of Lens, the niece of William the Conqueror. Waltheof and Judith had children, their oldest daughter Maud married David I King of Scotland. Through her granddaughter Ælfflæd became one of the many ancestors of the later Scottish and British monarchs. -------------------------------------------------------- "Ealdred's daughter, Aelfflaed, WAS THE SECOND WIFE of Siward and her son was Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria." --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Ealdred,_son_of_Uchtred "[Siward] entrenched his position in northern England by marrying Ælfflæd, the daughter of Ealdred, Earl of Bamburgh. After killing Ealdred's successor Eadulf in 1041, Siward gained control of all Northumbria." --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siward,_Earl_of_Northumbria In 1033 Siward married into the Northumbrian princely house, that of Bamburgh (after winning their admiration as a warrior) by taking Aelfled, granddaughter of Uchtred, former Earl of Northumbria, as his wife and thus strengthening his own position in that domain. https://enacademic.com/dic.nsf/enwiki/937974 Siward then entrenched his position in northern England by marrying Ælfflæd, the daughter of Ealdred, Earl of Bamburgh and granddaughter of Uhtred the Bold. http://www.englishmonarchs.co.uk/vikings_18.html ---------------------------------------- http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLAND,%20AngloSaxon%20nobility.htm#AelfledMSiward

- LifeSketch: Ælfgifu, Lady of Northumbria (also known as Elgiva) was the daughter of King Æthelred the Unready and his first wife Ælfgifu of York. She was born about 1000 and married Uchtred the Bold of Bamburgh in 1014. She was Uchtred's 3rd wife and together they had a daughter, Ealdgyth. Their marriage did not last long for Uchtred was murdered in 1016. Ælfgifu, daughter of King Æthelred, is not the same woman who married Aelfgar, Earl of Mercia. Aelfgar's wife was the sister of William Martel.

- WIDOWED: In March 1016 Ælfgifu's husband Uchtred was murdered by Turbrand the Hold while going to a peace conference wit Cnut. This ignited a Bloodfeud that would last for generations.
- NOT THE SAME AS AELFGIFU MALLET: Ælfgifu Lady of Northumbria was the daughter of King Æthelred the Unready and wife of Uchtred; Aelfgifu Mallet was the sister of William Mallet (not a son of King Æthelred) and married Aelfgar. Both had a daughter named Ealdgyth but they were born at least 10 years apart and had very different roles in history.
- LifeSketch: Aelfgifu was the wife of Aelfgar the Earl of Mercia. They had 4 children: - Burgheard, died returning from Rome 1060, buried at Reims - Edwin, Earl of Mercia - Morcar, Earl of Northumbria - Ealdgyth, married (1st) Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, King of Wales (2nd) Harold Godwinson, King of England. Aelfgifu is believed to be the sister of William Malet, Lord of Eye. Not much is know about the wife of Aelfgar, Earl of Mercia. Most sources do not name her at all, others claim her name was of Aelgifu. Some people try to make her Ælfgifu, the daughter of King Æthelred the Unready, however, this is not possible. Ælfgifu, the daughter of King Æthelred, is well known to have married Uchtred of Bamburgh about 1014. Uchtred died in 1016 and not much is known about Ælfgifu after that, which leads many to presume she remarried to Ælfgar. There are records documenting the remarriage of Uchtred's other wives but there is nothing documenting Ælfgifu's marriage to Aelfgar. As the daughter of King Æthelred she whould have been much more high profile than Uchtred's other wives and yet nothing. Surely if Aelfgar had married the daughter of a king it would be documented and he would have used those familial relations to his advantage. Ælfgifu did have a daughter named Ealdgyth, just like Aelfgar and his wife, however, the father of her daughter is known to be Uchtred. Ealdgyth, Uchtred's daughter was born between 1014 and 1016 and is known to have married Maldred, Lord of Allerdale about 1036, together they had 3 children. The daughter of Aelfgar, born 1026 or much later, would have been too young to have married Maldred in 1036. She is known to have married Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, King of Wales about 1055 and had at least one child. After his death she married Harold Godwinson, King of England in 1066 and had a son. The daughter of Uchtred born no later than 1016 would have been at least 50 years old in 1066 and past child bearing years. The daughter of Uchtred can not possibly be the same woman that was also the daughter (or step-daughter) of Aelfgar. And Ælfgifu the wife of Uchtred was not also the woman who married Aelfgar. Additionally, William Malet, High Sheriff of Yorkshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk, is "said to be the brother of Aelgifu, wife of Ælfgar, Earl of Mercia". Malet was certainly not the son of King Æthelred. In a one on one comparison, it can be seen they are not the same woman: Ælfgifu: Born: 991 to 1001 Father: King Æthelred Marriage: Uchtred 1014 Daughter: Ealdgyth, born 1014 to 1016 Aelgifu: Born: ? Father: ? same father as William Malet Marriage: Aelfgar about 1023 Daughter: Ealdgyth, born sometime after 1025 Some records such as The Foundation for Medieval Genealogy report Aelgifu's parents as Morcar Thegn of Derbyshire and his wife Ealdgyth. However, this does not appear to fit with her also being the sister of William Malet. UNLESS they were half-siblings sharing the same mother but not the same father. FMG does not have any records supporting this parent/child relationship. Aelgifu did name 2 of her children Morcar and Ealdgyth, these names are not seen in Aelfgar's family so the children could well be named in honor of Aelgifu's parents. This is just a possibility however with out sources to confirm it. http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/ENGLAND,%20AngloSaxon%20nobility.htm#AelfgifuNorthumbriaMAelfgarMercia Ælfgifu, Lady of Northumbria (also known as Elgiva) was the daughter of King Æthelred the Unready and his first wife Ælfgifu of York. - LifeSketch: Siward Björnsson, Earl of Northumbria, son of Björn Boresune Husband of Ælfflæd of Bamburgh and Godgifu Father of : Waltheof, Earl of Northumbria and Osbeorn Bulax (Osbjorn) From Wikipedia: Siward (/ˈsuːwərd/ or more recently /ˈsiːwərd/) or Sigurd (Old English: Sigeweard, Old Norse: Sigurðr digri) was an important earl of 11th-century northern England. The Old Norse nickname Digri and its Latin translation Grossus ("the stout") are given to him by near-contemporary texts. Siward was *PROBABLY* of Scandinavian origin, *PERHAPS* a relative of Ulf Thorgilsson, and emerged as a powerful regional strongman in England during the reign of Cnut ("Canute the Great"). Cnut was a Scandinavian ruler who conquered England in the 1010s, and Siward was one of the many Scandinavians who came to England in the aftermath of that conquest. Siward subsequently rose to become sub-ruler of most of northern England. From 1033 at the latest Siward was in control of southern Northumbria, that is, present-day Yorkshire, governing as earl on Cnut's behalf. He entrenched his position in northern England by marrying Ælfflæd, the daughter of Ealdred, Earl of Bamburgh. After killing Ealdred's successor Eadulf in 1041, Siward gained control of all Northumbria. He exerted his power in support of Cnut's successors, kings Harthacnut and Edward, assisting them with vital military aid and counsel. He probably gained control of the middle shires of Northampton and Huntingdon by the 1050s, and there is some evidence that he spread Northumbrian control into Cumberland. In the early 1050s Earl Siward turned against the Scottish king Mac Bethad mac Findlaích ("Macbeth"). Despite the death of his son Osbjorn, Siward defeated Mac Bethad in battle in 1054. More than half a millennium later the adventure in Scotland earned him a place in William Shakespeare's Macbeth. Siward died in 1055, leaving one son, Waltheof, who would eventually succeed to Northumbria. St Olave's church in York and nearby Heslington Hill are associated with Siward. Historians generally claim Siward to be of Scandinavian origin, a conclusion supported by the Vita Ædwardi Regis, which states that Siward was "[called] Digri in the Danish tongue" (Danica lingua Digara). Legendary material incorporated in the Vita et passio Waldevi comitis (or simply Vita Waldevi), the hagiographic biography of Siward's son, Waltheof, states that Siward was the son of a Scandinavian earl named Bjorn AND PROVIDES A GENEALOGY CLAIMING THAT HE WAS THE DESCENDANT OF A POLAR BEAR, a *commonplace* piece of Germanic FOLKLORE." Historian Timothy Bolton has recently argued that the similarities between these genealogies is evidence of a shared family tradition between the descendants of Siward and Thorgil Sprakling. Bolton hypothesized that Siward's alleged father Bjorn was probably a historical figure, a brother of Thorgil Sprakling. Siward would then have been first cousin to Earl Ulf, the earl of Denmark who married Cnut's sister Estrith and founded the dynasty of Danish monarchs that eventually succeeded Cnut's. Bolton argued that the Sprakling family had only recently risen to prominence in Scandinavia, and so Siward's career in England was another indication of that family's success in Scandinavian politics. The Vita Waldevi provides further legendary detail of Siward's journey from Scandinavia to England. According to the Vita, Siward passed through Orkney, killing a dragon there before moving on to Northumbria. There he encountered another dragon, before meeting an Oðinn-like old man on a hill, who handed him a raven banner and instructed him to proceed to London to receive the patronage of the king of England. Relations between Siward and King Edward appear to have been good. Neither Siward nor any associates of Siward were punished by Edward in later years. In fact, Siward appears to have been one of Edward's most powerful supporters. On 16 November 1043, Siward, along with Earls Godwine of Wessex and Leofric of Mercia, marched with King Edward against his mother, Queen Emma, helping the king to deprive the queen of her huge treasury. Edward then accused Emma of treason and deposed Stigand, Bishop of Elmham, from his position "because he was closest to his mother's counsel". The Norman propagandist and historian, William of Poitiers, claimed that Siward was among those who had sworn an oath to uphold Edward the Confessor's alleged declaration that William, Duke of Normandy (later King William I), was to be his heir. Others said to have made that oath were Earls Godwine of Wessex and Leofric of Mercia, along with Stigand, who had been pardoned in 1044, and raised to Bishop of Winchester in 1047. If this did happen, it was probably during or a little before spring 1051, when Robert, Archbishop of Canterbury, was journeying to Rome for his pallium. In 1051 Siward, along with Earls Leofric and Ralph the Timid, mobilised forces in defence of the king against a rebellion by Earl Godwine and his sons. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle relates that although Siward had to call up reinforcements, King Edward was successful and Earl Godwine was temporarily exiled. Earl Godwine remained a threat in exile, and the continued "belligerent support" of Siward and Leofric was thus vital to King Edward's safety. It was apparently, however, the reluctance of these two earls to fight Earl Godwine that contributed to Godwine's re-establishment in England in 1052. There is evidence to suggest that Siward extended his power southward, bringing the shire of Northampton into his control in the 1040s and the shire of Huntingdon in the 1050s. The evidence comes from royal writs addressed to Siward as earl in these shires. Siward's predecessors as earl in these areas were other Scandinavians, Thuri and Bjorn son of Earl Ulf; the former was styled "earl of the Midlanders" (comes mediterraneorum), showing that this earldom represented the earlier polity of the Middle Angles of Mercia. It was this area, rather than Northumbria, to which Siward's descendants were most attached. Likewise, it has been argued that Siward brought Cumberland, thought by some historians to have been lost to Strathclyde, back under Northumbrian lordship. The evidence comes from a document known to historians as "Gospatric's Writ". This is a written instruction, issued either by the future Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria, or Gospatric, son of Earl Uhtred, that was addressed to all Gospatric's kindred and to the notables dwelling in the "all the lands that were Cumbrian" (on eallun þam landann þeo Cōmbres); it ordered that one Thorfinn mac Thore be free in all things (þ Thorfynn mac Thore beo swa freo in eallan ðynges) in Allerdale, and that no man is to break the peace which was given by Gospatric and Earl Siward. Historians such as Charles Phythian-Adams believed that such phraseology indicated that Siward conquered the region from its previous rulers, although others, like William Kapelle, believed that the region had come, were it ever lost, back into English power before Siward's time. A little can be said about Siward's relations with the Northumbrian church, in particular with regard to his relations with Durham. As a result of Siward's marriage to Ælfflæd, Siward gained possession of a group of estates in Teesside claimed by the bishops of Durham. Acquisition of these estates might have brought opposition from the Bishop of Durham, but Æthelric the incumbent had been expelled by the clergy of Durham in either 1045 or 1046 and, according to the Libellus de Exordio, only returned by bribing Siward. According to the Libellus, the clergy were "terrified and overwhelmed by the fearful power of the earl" and "were compelled willy nilly to be reconciled to the bishop, and to admit him into his episcopal see". Despite this, Siward escaped censure in the writings of later Durham monks, something which suggests relations between Siward and Durham were probably good in general. Siward can be found witnessing numerous charters during Edward's reign. He witnessed 20 to 24 charters dating from 1044 to 1054. Possibly Siward's last historical appearance in English legal documents is in the agreement made—probably at Lincoln—between Wulfwig, Bishop of Dorchester, and Earl Leofric, dating to between 1053 and 1055. Siward is believed to have died in 1055 of dysentery. The record of his burial in the church of St Olaf at Galmanho, York, is the only notice of a non-royal lay burial inside a church in pre-Norman England. Siward is believed to have built the church. One of Siward's sons is known to have survived him, Waltheof, whose mother was Ælfflæd. Waltheof later rose to be an earl in the East Midlands before becoming Earl of Northumbria. When Waltheof rebelled against William the Conqueror, however, the act led to his execution and to his subsequent veneration as a saint at Crowland Abbey. Waltheof's daughter married David I, King of the Scots, and through this connection Siward became one of the many ancestors of the later Scottish and British monarchs. Besides Ælfflæd, Siward is known to have been married to a woman named Godgifu, who died before Siward. The marriage is known from a grant she made of territory around Stamford, Lincolnshire, to Peterborough Abbey. Although no surviving children are attested, and no source states the name of Osbjorn's mother, this marriage has nonetheless raised the possibility that Waltheof and Osbjorn were born to different mothers, and William Kapelle suggested that Siward may have originally intended Osbjorn to inherit his southern territories while Waltheof inherited those territories in the north associated with the family of his mother Ælfflæd.
