- Defeated in Battle: 568 Æthelbert is defeated in battle by Ceawlin of the West Seaxe at Wibbandun. This is notable as being the first recorded conflict between two groups of invaders, rather than a battle against the native British. The location of 'Wibbandun', which can be translated as 'Wibba's Mount', has not been definitely identified. At one time it was thought to be Wimbledon, but this is now known to be incorrect. Instead it seems likely that the battle takes place near the boundary between Hampshire and Berkshire, probably disputed territory between Kent and the West Seaxe., 568, Wibbandun, West Seaxe, England

The eighth-century monk Bede, in his Ecclesiastical History of the English People, lists him as the third king to hold imperium over other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. In the late ninth century Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, he is referred to as a bretwalda, or "Britain-ruler". He was the first English king to convert to Christianity. Æthelberht was the son of Eormenric, succeeding him as king, according to the Chronicle. He married Bertha, the Christian daughter of Charibert, king of the Franks, thus building an alliance with the most powerful state in contemporary Western Europe; the marriage probably took place before he came to the throne. Bertha's influence may have led to Pope Gregory I's decision to send Augustine as a missionary from Rome. Augustine landed on the Isle of Thanet in east Kent in 597. Shortly thereafter, Æthelberht converted to Christianity, churches were established, and wider-scale conversion to Christianity began in the kingdom. He provided the new church with land in Canterbury, thus establishing one of the foundation stones of what ultimately became the Anglican Communion. Æthelberht's law for Kent, the earliest written code in any Germanic language, instituted a complex system of fines; the law code is preserved in the Textus Roffensis. Kent was rich, with strong trade ties to the continent, and Æthelberht may have instituted royal control over trade. Coinage probably began circulating in Kent during his reign for the first time since the Anglo-Saxon settlement. He later came to be regarded as a saint for his role in establishing Christianity among the Anglo-Saxons. His feast day was originally 24 February but was changed to 25 February.

The loss also means that the Middel Seaxe are removed from Kentish control. However, Eadbald is quickly converted to Christianity and takes a Frankish wife, and Kent remains a beleaguered bridgehead of the Roman world in England.
- Marriage to his stepmother: ...His death is, however, referred to in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle[295]. Bede records the death in 640 of "Eadbald rex Cantuariorum"[296]. m firstly (repudiated [618]) as her second husband, his stepmother, ---, widow of ÆTHELBERHT King of Kent, daughter of --- (-after [618]). Her second marriage is confirmed by Bede who records that "filius eius Eadbald" succeeded as king after the death of "Aedilbercti", adding that he refused to embrace Christianity and was also "fornicatione pollutus" because he had "uxorem patris", adding in a later passage that her husband was persuaded to repudiate her when he was converted to Christianity[297]. m secondly (after [618]) EMMA of the Franks, daughter of [CHLOTHACHAR II King of the Franks & his first wife Adaltrudis].

Earcobeorht, King of Kent+1 d. 14 Jul 664 Eormenred (?)+1 Eanswith (?)3 Eadbald (Old English: Ēadbald) was King of Kent from 616 until his death in 640. He was the son of King Æthelberht and his wife Bertha, a daughter of the Merovingian king Charibert.[1] Æthelberht made Kent the dominant force in England during his reign and became the first Anglo-Saxon king to convert to Christianity from Anglo-Saxon paganism. Eadbald's accession was a significant setback for the growth of the church, since he retained his people's paganism and did not convert to Christianity for at least a year, and perhaps for as much as eight years. He was ultimately converted by either Laurentius or Justus, and separated from his first wife, who had been his stepmother, at the insistence of the church. Eadbald's second wife was Emma, who may have been a Frankish princess. She bore him two sons, Eormenred and Eorcenberht, and a daughter, Eanswith. Eadbald's influence was less than his father's, but Kent was powerful enough to be omitted from the list of kingdoms dominated by Edwin of Northumbria. Edwin's marriage to Eadbald's sister, Æthelburg, established a good relationship between Kent and Northumbria which appears to have continued into Oswald's reign. When Æthelburg fled to Kent on Edwin's death in about 633, she sent her children to Francia for safety, fearing the intrigues of both Eadbald and Oswald. The Kentish royal line made several strong diplomatic marriages over the succeeding years, including the marriage of Eanflæd, Eadbald's niece, to Oswiu, and of Eorcenberht to Seaxburh, daughter of King Anna of East Anglia. Eadbald died in 640 and was buried in the Church of St Mary, which he had built in the precincts of the monastery of St Peter and St Paul in Canterbury (a church later incorporated within the Norman edifice of St Augustine's).[1] At that time, his relics were translated for reburial in the south transept ca. A.D. 1087.[2] He was succeeded by Eorcenberht. Eormenred may have been his oldest son, but if he reigned at all it was only as a junior king. Early Kent and early sources The state of Anglo-Saxon England at about the time of Eadbald's birth Settlement of Kent by continental peoples, primarily Jutes, was complete by the end of the sixth century.[3] Eadbald's father, Æthelberht, probably came to the throne in about 589 or 590, though the chronology of his reign is very difficult to determine accurately.[4] Æthelberht was recorded by the early chronicler Bede as having overlordship, or imperium, over other Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.[5] This dominance led to wealth in the form of tribute, and Kent was a powerful kingdom at the time of Æthelberht's death in 616, with trade well-established with the European mainland.[6] Roman Britain had become fully Christianized, but the Anglo-Saxons retained their native faith. In 597 Augustine was sent by Pope Gregory I to England to convert them to Christianity. Augustine landed in eastern Kent, and soon managed to convert Æthelberht, who gave Augustine land in Canterbury. Two other rulers, Sæberht, king of Essex, and Rædwald, king of East Anglia, were converted through Æthelberht's influence.[7][8] An important source for this period in Kentish history is The Ecclesiastical History of the English People, written in 731 by Bede, a Benedictine monk from Northumbria. Bede was primarily interested in the Christianization of England, but he also provides substantial information about secular history, including the reigns of Æthelberht and Eadbald. One of Bede's correspondents was Albinus, abbot of the monastery of St. Peter and St. Paul (subsequently renamed St. Augustine's) in Canterbury. A series of related texts known as the Legend of St Mildrith provides additional information about events in the lives of Eadbald's children and throws some light on Eadbald himself. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, a collection of annals assembled in about 890 in the kingdom of Wessex, also provides information. Other sources include papal letters, regnal lists of the kings of Kent, and early charters. Charters were documents drawn up to record grants of land by kings to their followers or to the church, and they provide some of the earliest documentary sources in England. None survive in original form from Eadbald's reign, but some later copies exist.[9] Ancestry and immediate family Eadbald's ancestry and siblings The ancestry of Æthelberht, Eadbald's father, is given by Bede, who states that he was descended from the legendary founder of Kent, Hengist. However, historians believe that Hengist and his brother Horsa were probably mythical figures.[10] It is known that Æthelberht married twice as Eadbald married his step-mother after his father's death, to the consternation of the church.[11] Eadbald had a sister, Æthelburg, who was probably also the child of Bertha. Æthelburg married Edwin, King of Northumbria, one of the dominant Anglo-Saxon kings of the seventh century. It is possible that there was another brother, named Æthelwald:[12] the evidence for this is a papal letter to Justus, archbishop of Canterbury from 619 to 625, in which a king named Aduluald is referred to, and who is apparently different from Audubald, which refers to Eadbald. There is no agreement among modern scholars on how to interpret this: "Aduluald" might be intended as a representation of "Æthelwald", and hence this may be an indication of another king, perhaps a subking of west Kent;[13] or it may be merely a scribal error which should be read as referring to Eadbald.[14] Archbishop Laurence of Canterbury persuaded Eadbald to accept Christianity and give up his wife.[1] He then remarried, and his second wife, according to Kentish tradition recorded in the 'Kentish Royal Legend', was a woman named Ymme of Frankish royal blood, though recently it has been suggested that she may have instead been the daughter of Erchinoald, mayor of the palace in Neustria, the western part of Francia.[15][16] East and West Kent The surviving regnal lists show only one king reigning at a time in Kent, but subkingdoms were common among the Anglo-Saxons and from the reign of Hlothhere, in the late seventh century, there is evidence that Kent was usually ruled by two kings, though often one is clearly dominant. It is less clear that this is the case before Hlothhere. Forged charters preserve a tradition of Eadbald ruling during his father's reign, presumably as a subking over west Kent. The papal letter that has been interpreted as indicating the existence of Æthelwald, a brother of Eadbald's, refers to Æthelwald as a king; if he existed, he would presumably have been a junior king to Eadbald.[13] The two kingdoms within Kent were east and west Kent. Western Kent has fewer archaeological finds from the earliest periods than east Kent, and the eastern finds are somewhat distinct in character, showing Jutish and Frankish influence. The archaeological evidence, combined with the known political division into two kingdoms, makes it likely that the origin of the subkingdoms was the conquest of the western half by the eastern, which would have been the first area settled by the invaders.[17]
- LifeSketch: Æthelburh of Kent (born 601,[1] sometimes spelled Æthelburg, Ethelburga, Æthelburga; Old English: Æþelburh, Æðelburh, Æðilburh, also known as Tate or Tata),[2][3] was an early Anglo-Saxon queen consort of Northumbria, the second wife of King Edwin. As she was a Christian from Kent, their marriage triggered the initial phase of the conversion of the pagan north of England to Christianity. Early life and marriage Æthelburh would have been born in the late 6th century, as the daughter of King Æthelberht of Kent (sometimes spelled Aethelberht) and his queen Bertha, and sister of Eadbald. In 625, she married Edwin of Northumbria as his second wife. A condition of their marriage was Edwin's conversion to Christianity and the acceptance of Paulinus's mission to convert the Northumbrians.[4][5] Æthelburh’s children with Edwin were: Eanflæd, Ethelhun, Wuscfrea and Edwen. Her daughter Eanflæd grew up under the protection of her uncle, King Eadbald of Kent. Bede, Ecclesiastical History (2.20) states that Æthelburh did not trust her brother, or Edwin's sainted successor Oswald, with the lives of Edwin's male descendants whom she sent to the court of King Dagobert I (her mother's cousin). Christianity and founding of monastery Saxon church at Lyminge founded by Æthelburh in 633, excavated in 2019 Stone in Lyminge Church marking the burial site of the founder King Edwin’s conversion was due to his marriage to Æthelburh, who brought her bishop Paulinus with her. Both Æthelburh and her mother, Bertha, received letters from popes Gregory and Boniface respectively, urging them to do their Christian duty by converting their pagan husbands. Their daughter Eanflaed was one of the first to be baptized in Northumbria.[6] After King Edwin was wounded, Æthelburh's alarm caused an early onset of childbirth. Both the mother, as well as the infant, appeared to be in danger. The prayers of Paulinus were offered for the queen and child. After they recovered, 12 of the royal households, as well as the baby, were baptized by Edwin’s permission and request.[7] According to the Kentish Royal Legend, after Edwin's death at the Battle of Hatfield Chase in 633, she returned to Kent. She then established one of the first Benedictine nunneries in England, at Lyminge, near Folkestone, which she led until her death in 647, and where her remains were later venerated.[5] Modern research has shown that the buildings at Lyminge were designed to contain a convent of monks as well as of nuns. The church is built from Roman masonry, and was possibly built out of the fragments of a villa, which was customary practice by Anglo-Saxons, or it may have been a Roman basilica.[1]

Bede names "Aedilberctum, Eadberctum et Alricum" as the three sons of "Uictred filius Ecgberti rex Cantuariorum"[381]. "Æthelbertus filius regis Wihtredi" granted property to abbess Mildred by charter dated 11 Jul 724, consented to by "Eadbertus ad petitionem germani sui Æthelberti"[382]. He succeeded his father in 725 as EADBERHT joint King of Kent, ruling jointly with his brother Æthelberht. "Eadbertus rex Cantuariorum" granted land to "Mildrithe abbatisse" by charter dated 727[383]. "Eadberht rex Cantuariorum" granted land at Stoke-in-Hoo, Kent to bishop Ealdwulf by charter dated 738[384]. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records King Eadberht's death in 748[385]. However, there must be some doubt about the accuracy of this date as "Eadbertus rex Cantuariorum" granted land at Monheham, Kent to St Augustine's, Canterbury by charter dated [762/63], and "Eadberht rex Cantiæ" also subscribed a charter of "Sigiræd rex Cantiæ" dated 762[386], although it is possible that these two references relate to a second King Eadberht about whom no other information has been found. Alternatively, they may refer to King Heahbert or King Ecgberht (see below). According to Florence of Worcester’s genealogies, "frater suus Eadberhtus qui et Pren" succeeded on the death of "Æthelberhtum"[387], which would also place Eadberht’s death after [762/63]. However, it is likely that Florence has confused Eadberht, son of Wihtred, both with Ecgberht King of Kent (who succeeded in [765]) and with Eadberht "Præn" King of Kent (who succeeded in [796]), both of whom are shown below. m ---. The name of Eadberht's wife is not known. Eadberht & [his wife] had one child: EARDULF (-after 760). The primary source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified. He ruled as joint king of Kent with his father and uncle[388]. "Eardulfus rex Cantuariorum" granted land at Petteridge and Lindridge, Kent to Rochester St Andrew's by charter dated 748, subscribed by "Æthilberchtus rex Cantie"[389]. "Æarduulfo rege Cantiæ" wrote a letter to Lullus with Eardulf Bishop of Rochester, dated to [760/78] in the compilation although the basis for this dating is not clear from the text[390].

Eadbert I of KENT
\-Ethelburga QUEEN OF KENT
- Father: Eadbald of KENT
- Mother: Emma MEROVINGIAN
- Birth: 618, Kingdom of Kent, England
- Also known as: King Earconbert of Kent
- Also known as: Princess Eanswyth of Kent
- Also known as: Eanswythe, Eanswith or Eanswide
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Kingdom of Kent, BET 640 AND 664, Kingdom of Kent, Anglia
- Death of Eorcenberht: Eorcenberht dies during an apparent epidemic which sweeps the country. Only in his forties, his death takes the kingdom by surprise. Deusdedit, archbishop of Canterbury, is also taken suddenly. The accession of the king's son, Ecgberht, is challenged by the heirs of Eormenred - namely his sons, Æthelred and Æthelberht. The 'conspirators' are subsequently murdered at the royal vill of Eastry (near Sandwich in East Kent), but damage is done to Ecgberht and the moral authority of the Oiscingas.
- National Identification: IND6185
- LifeSketch: Eorcenberht, King of Kent was the son of Eadbeald, King of Kent and Emma. He married Sexburgh, daughter of Anna, King of the East Angles. He died on 14 July 664. He succeeded as the King Earcobeorht of Kent in 640. Saint Eormenhild Religion Roman Catholic Eorcenberht of Kent (also Ærconberht, Earconberht, or Earconbert) (died 14 July 664) was king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Kent from 640 until his death, succeeding his father Eadbald. The Kentish Royal Legend (also known as the Mildrith legend) suggests that he was the younger son of Eadbald and Emma of Austrasia, and that his older brother Eormenred was deliberately passed over, although another possibility is that they ruled jointly. According to Bede (HE III.8), Eorcenberht was the first king in Britain to command that pagan "idols" (cult images) be destroyed and that Lent be observed. It has been suggested that these orders may have been officially committed to writing, in the tradition of Kentish law-codes initiated by Æthelberht, but no such text survives. After the death of Honorius, Archbishop of Canterbury, Eorcenberht appointed the first Saxon archbishop, Deusdedit, in 655. Eorcenberht married Seaxburh of Ely, daughter of king Anna of East Anglia. They had two sons, Ecgberht and Hlothhere, who each consecutively became king of Kent, and two daughters who both were eventually canonized: Saint Eorcengota became a nun at Faremoutiers Abbey on the continent, and Saint Ermenilda became abbess at Ely. Eorcenberht was probably buried alongside his parents in the Church of St Mary, which his father had built in the precincts of the monastery of St Peter and St Paul in Canterbury, a church later incorporated within the Norman edifice of St Augustine's. At that time, his relics were translated for reburial in the south transept ca. A.D. 1087.

- LifeSketch: Saint Eanswith (born c. 630, Kent, England. Died c. 650, Folkestone, England), also spelled Eanswythe or Eanswide, was an Anglo Saxon princess, who is said to have founded Folkestone Priory, one of the first Christian monastic communities for women in Britain. Tradition has it that Eanswith founded the Benedictine Folkestone Priory, the first nunnery in England. She was supported in this by her father, Eadbald, who ruled as king of Kent from 616 to 640 CE. While the monastery was under construction, a pagan prince came to Kent seeking to marry Eanswythe. King Eadbald, whose sister St. Ethelburga had married the pagan King Edwin two or three years before, recalled that this wedding resulted in Edwin's conversion. Eanswythe, however, refused. This was the first women's monastery to be founded in England. St. Eanswythe lived there with her companions in the monastic life, and they may have been guided by some of the Roman monks who had come to England with St. Augustine in 597. She remained at the abbey until her death in 650. The first monastic site became abandoned by the 10th century, and began to be eroded by the sea, a problem which also afflicted a new foundation of 1095. A site further inland was provided for a new foundation of Folkestone Priory by William de Abrincis in 1137, with a church dedicated to St Mary and St Eanswythe. Saint Eanswith's day falls on September 12. Traditionally, this is the date on which her remains were translated to the new church in 1138. The priory was closed at the Reformation, and the Church became Folkestone Parish Church. During restoration work at the church in 1885 human remains were discovered in a lead reliquary, embedded within the church wall, which were identified as a 12th-century vessel, and the bones of a young woman. This led to the conclusion that they could be the translated relics of Saint Eanswith, hidden away at the Reformation. A new expert analysis by historians and archaeologists concluded in March 2020 that the remains are almost certainly that of Eanswith. In 2020, osteoarchaeologists were given the opportunity to examine the remains of a skeleton long thought to be the remains of St. Eanswythe. They concluded that the bones belonged to a young female. Radiocarbon dating confirmed that the remains were from the mid-7th century, adding to the evidence that this may well be St. Eanswythe. The results of DNA and isotope analysis are pending. It can never be proven that the remains are St. Eanswythe but the evidence certainly indicates that this could be the case. If so, these are the earliest remains yet discovered of an English saint, and of a relative of the British monarch. - From Wikipedia

- LifeSketch: The Battle on the Ice of Lake Vänern was a 6th-century battle recorded in the Norse sagas and referred to in the Old English epic Beowulf. It has been dated to c. 530. Beowulf is an epic tale that refers to the battle on the ice of lake Vänern. In it, the Swedish king Ohthere, Ottar Vendelkråka, who is often called the first historical king of Sweden, [1] had died and his brother Onela, or Áli, had usurped the Swedish throne. Ottar's sons Eanmund and Eadgils, or Adils, had to flee to Geatland and seek refuge with the Geatish king Heardred. This induced Onela to attack the Geats and kill both Eanmund and Heardred. In order to avenge his king and kinsman, Beowulf decided to help Eadgils gain the throne of Sweden. During the battle Eadgils slew Onela and became the king of Sweden. There are a few references in Norse sources that give an account of the battle on the ice of lake Vänern. Some of the sagas differ from one another in detail. The equivalent of Onela, Áli hinn upplenzki, has been placed in Norwegian Oppland, rather than Swedish Uppland.

- LifeSketch: Arvirargus (or Arviragus) was a legendary, and possibly historical, British king of the 1st century AD. A shadowy historical Arviragus is known only from a cryptic reference in a satirical poem by Juvenal, in which a giant turbot presented to the Roman emperor Domitian (AD 81 – 96) is said to be an omen that "you will capture some king, or Arviragus will fall from his British chariot-pole." -- Wikiwand: Arvirargus

- Mother: Princesa DE BERNICIA
- Birth: 598, Strathclyde, Dál Riata
- Residence: Strathclyde, Lanarkshire, Scotland
- Title Of Nobility: King of Strathclyde
- LifeSketch: Beli I was a ruler of Alt Clut, the Brittonic kingdom later known as Strathclyde, some time in the 7th century. Very little is known of him, but his family appears to have been very well connected in northern Britain. The Harleian genealogies name Beli as the son of Neithon, his predecessor as king, and the father of Eugein I, his successor. Beli map Neithon is probably identifiable as the Beli who was the father of Bridei III of the Picts, as the Elegy for Bruide mac Bili attributed to Adomnán calls Bridei mac rígh Ala Cluaithe ("son of the King of Alt Clut"). The Historia Brittonum says that Bridei was the fratruelis or maternal first cousin of Ecgfrith of Northumbria, indicating that Beli's wife might have been of the Northumbrian nobility, though Bridei must have had some Pictish connection to become king of Fortriu. The Annales Cambriae entry for 627 refers to the death of a certain Belin, who may be identified with Beli map Neithon. He was certainly dead by 642, the year Irish sources record King Oan or Hoan of Alt Clut (apparently Beli's son Eugein) fighting the Battle of Strathcarron. - LifeSketch: Biography Bran the Blessed is a legendary or fictional person. Therefore he cannot have parents, spouses, or children, and he cannot have real dates or events. Noted genealogist Stewart Baldwin states plainly, "Unfortunately, these entirely mythical individuals come from various discredited genealogies which are incessantly repeated by amateur genealogists (and also by some who should know better). None of the above individuals ever existed, and any source which claims that they did is not trustworthy. [1] Research Notes His profile is being retained on WikiTree because Bran the Blessed appears in many popular genealogies. Therefore it is important to summarize here what the legends are, and to trace, to the extent possible, how they arose. Many of the legendary figures, including those who were born before the common era, appear on Saint Paul in Britain and Earliest Genealogy of Britain and Wales Parallel Profiles . Bran Fendigaid, born BCE . Guneril of Siluria, born 110 CE . Bran the Blessed, born 0018 CE Outline of the Legend . Pre-BCE Profiles: Antecedents reach back before the Common Era. Earliest Genealogy of Britain and Wales Conflation: This profile appears to conflate a Christian legend, a pre-Christian Druid legend of a God-king, and a 5th century Britonic king; details regarding each need to be sorted out. Legend A -- 100 BCE Bran was born between 100 and 75 BCE in England, and was also known as Lleddiarth ("half-speech Lear") Legend B -- Siluria Bran's father listed before merge of http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Britain-3 and http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ap_Bladud-1 was Bladud 1st King of Siluria Of Troy-1 Legend C -- about 1 BCE-CE Bran Fendigaid was born in 0018. Bran Fendigaid Ap Siluria ... [2] He was born 20-10 BCE in Trevan, Llanilid, Glamorganshire, England. Legend D -- About 50, CE Brân the Blessed (Welsh: Bendigeidfran or Brân Fendigaidd, literally "Blessed Crow") is a giant and king of Britain in Welsh mythology. [3] Bran the Blessed was said to be a British King prior to the Roman Conquest. He was taken to Rome as a captive and made a persuasively eloquent speech before the Romans, and was granted his life. For house arrest he was placed in the home of St. Paul, who was living in Rome. Joseph of Arimathea and his daughter Anna were part of the household. Bran converted to Christianity, married Anna, and returned to England. This explains not only how Christianity first came to England, but also how Welsh royalty are descended from the ancient Hebrews. History of the Legend Mabinogen Bran the Blessed appears in several of the Welsh Triads, but his most significant role is in the Second Branch of the Mabinogi, Branwen ferch Llŷr. He is a son of Llŷr and Penarddun, and the brother of Brânwen, Manawydan, Nisien and Efnysien. The name "Brân" in Welsh is usually translated as crow or raven. The Welsh mythological texts of the Mabinogion were recorded between the 14th and 15th centuries in Middle Welsh. As a result, there are discrepancies regarding the spelling of names, because English translations maintain Middle Welsh orthography whereas Modern Welsh versions use Modern Welsh orthography. In Middle Welsh, there was some variation on the name Brân; other grammatical forms (following the rules of Welsh mutations) include Vran and Uran (Fran in Modern Welsh orthography). In the Mabinogion, the character is referred to virtually exclusively as "Bendigeituran"; that is, with the epithet "Bendigeit" (blessed or praiseworthy) attached. The only exceptions are in the patronymic of his son Caradog ap Brân and a single reference to his gathering in Ireland as Gwledd Brân, "The feast of Brân (or 'Crow')". This usage is followed in the Welsh Triads. Bendigeituran becomes "Bendigeidfrân" or "Brân Fendigeid" in Modern Welsh; Bendigeidfran is the form used in many Modern Welsh adaptations of the Mabinogion. While Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr and Prydydd y Moch mention Brân fab Llŷr several times in their poetry, under different spellings. However, Bleddyn Fardd refers to "Benigeitran" in his elegy for Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, demonstrating that the epithet "Bendigeit" had been attached to Brân since the late 13th century.

His mother was Eithne, daughter of Dunlong, King of Leinster. He had three sons - 1. Eochaidh Dubhlen; 2. Eocho; and 3. Fiacha Srabhteine, who was the 120th Monarch of Ireland, and the ancestor of O'Neill, Princes of Tyrone. Fiacha Srabhteine was so called, from his having been fostered at Dunsrabhteine, in Connaught; of which province he was King, before his elevation to the Monarchy. After seventeen years' reign, the Monarch Cairbre Lifeachar was slain at the battle of Gabhra [Gaura], A.D. 284, by Simeon, the son of Ceirb, who came from the south of Leinster to this battle, fought by the Militia of Ireland, who were called the Fiana Erionn (or Fenians), and arising from a quarrel which happened between the; in which the Monarch, taking part with one side against the other, lost his life

- Title Of Nobility: 117th King of Leinster
- LifeSketch: Cairbre Lifechair ("lover of the Liffey"), son of Cormac mac Airt, was, according to medieval Irish legend and historical tradition, a High King of Ireland. He came to the throne after the death of Eochaid Gonnat. During his time Bresal Belach was king of Leinster, and refused to pay the bórama or cow-tribute to the High King, but Cairbre defeated him in the Battle of Dubchomar, and from then on exacted the bórama without a battle. Reign According to the 8th-century text known as The Expulsion of the Déisi, Cairbre takes the throne when his father Cormac is blinded by Óengus Gaíbúaibthech of the Déisi, it being against the law for the king to have any physical blemish. The chronicles indicate that Eochaid Gonnat succeeded Cormac, but was soon succeeded by Cairbre following his death in battle. According to Cath Gabhra (The Battle of Gabhra), a narrative of the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology, Cairbre married Aine, daughter of Fionn mac Cumhaill. During his reign, his sons Fiacha Sraibhtine and Eochaid Doimlen killed Óengus Gaíbúaibthech. To make peace, Cairbre betroths his daughter, Sgiam Sholais, to a Déisi prince. However, the fianna demand a tribute of twenty gold bars, which they claimed was customarily paid on such occasions. Cairbre decides the fianna have become too powerful, and raises a huge army from Ulster, Connacht and Leinster against them. They are joined by Goll mac Morna and his followers, who turn against their comrades in the fianna, but Munster and the Déisi side with the fianna. Cairbre's army wins in the Battle of Gabhra, but Cairbre himself falls in single combat against Fionn's grandson Oscar, who dies of his wounds shortly afterwards. Fionn himself either dies in the battle, or had been killed on the River Boyne the previous year. The only survivors of the fianna are Caílte mac Rónáin and Fionn's son Oisín. Cairbre had ruled for seventeen, twenty-six or twenty-seven years. He was succeeded by Fothad Cairpthech and Fothad Airgthech, sons of Lugaid mac Con, ruling jointly. The chronology of Geoffrey Keating's Foras Feasa ar Éirinn dates his reign to 245–272, the Annals of the Four Masters to 267–284.
