- LifeSketch: set in read only with several of his mother According to Ynglingatal, Historia Norwegiae and Ynglinga saga, Yngvi and Alf were the sons of Alrik. Snorri Sturluson relates that Yngvi was an accomplished king: a great warrior who always won his battles, the master of all exercises, generous, happy and sociable. He was both loved and famous. Alf was unsociable and harsh and stayed at home instead of pillaging in other countries. His mother was Dageid, the daughter of king Dag the Great from whom is descended the Dagling family. Alf was married to Bera who was happy and alert and a very lovable woman. One day in the autumn, Yngvi returned to Uppsala from a very successful Viking expedition which had rendered him famous. He used to spend time at the drinking table until late in the night, like Bera, and they found it pleasant to talk to each other. Alf, however, preferred to go to bed early and he started to tell her to go to bed early as well so that she did not wake him. Then Bera used to answer that Yngvi was much better for a woman than Alf, an answer that was getting on Alf's nerves. One evening, the jealous Alf entered the hall and saw Yngvi and Bera converse on the high seat. Yngvi had a short sword in his lap and the other guests were too drunk to see that Alf had arrived. From under his cloak Alf drew a sword and pierced Yngvi. Yngvi, mortally wounded, got up, drew his own short sword and slew Alf. They were buried in two mounds on the Fyrisvellir (Fyris Wolds).

- LifeSketch: John Ames _Birth: 1507 in Bruton, Somerset, England 1 2 _Burial: 09 AUG 1583 Bruton, Somerset, England 6 Death: AUG 1583 in Bruton, Somerset, England 1 2 _ New England families, genealogical and memorial: a record of the achievements of her people in the making of commonwealths and the founding of a nation vol 3 pg 1288 This first John Ames had a son by the same name who married Margery Crome, and died in 1583, leaving three sons, John, Lancelot, and William. The eldest of these, John, was born in Bruton sometime between 1560 and 1565, and died there in 1629; he married Cyprian Brown and had two sons: William, born October 6, 1605, and John, born December 10, 1610. These two sons, born in the ancestral home in England, became the founders of the family in America: coming to the new world respectively in the years 1638 and 1640, and first settling in Duxbury, Massachusetts. John Ames, the younger of the two immigrant brothers, coming to America in 1640, was named in 1643 as among those in Duxbury who were able to bear arms. He married Elizabeth Hayward, October 20, 1645, and removed to Bridgewater, Massachusetts, rendering distinguished service to the country of his adoption during King Philip's war, and dying in West Bridgewater in 1698. He accumulated a considerable amount of property which he left to his heirs. Among his children were William and John; and these, like the children of his brother William, had many descendants throughout the country. Indeed, the history of the Ames family forms a most interesting chapter in the industrial, commercial, civil and military annals of the United States. (I) John Ames was buried at Bruton. Somerset. (IV) William Ames. son of .Tohn ( 3 ) , born in 1605, came to New England and settled in Braintree as early as 1638. He was admitted a freeman May 26. 1647. The Christian name of his wife was Hannah. - LifeSketch: John Ames was christened on 2 Dec 1610 in Bruton, Somerset, England. His brother William, who came to Massachusetts with him, settled at Braintree, in 1640, where he is well-documented. John Ames settled first at Duxbury, where his name was on a list of those able to bear arms in 1643. He was one of the original Duxbury proprietors: "The [54] inhabitants of the town of Duxbury are granted a competent proportion of lands abt Saughtuchquett (Satucket), towards the west, for a plantation for them, and to have it 4 miles every way from the place where they shall set up their centre..." The text also mentions that among others notable Capt. Miles Standish and Mr. John Alden "to be feofees in trust for the equal dividing and laying forth the said lans to the inhabitants." John Ames was among the fifty-four Duxbury men listed in 1645 as original proprietors for the development of the town that would become Bridgewater, Plymouth Colony, Massachusetts (Plymouth Colony). Two others, Reverend James Keith and Samuel Edson, were added to the group later, and when the town of Bridgewater was actually incorporated in 1656 there were a total of fifty-six. Of these proprietors, only eighteen, about one-third, actually relocated and became residents of the new plantation. John Ames was among those few relocating from Duxbury to make his home in West Bridgewater. The area known as the Bridgewaters was originally inhabited by Wampanoag who called it Saughtuchquett (Satucket). In 1642 when the township of Marshfield was separated from Duxbury and became its own distinct entity, Duxbury petitioned the court for additional land “to the westward” in compensation. The General Court granted their petition in 1645 and six trustees, Captain Myles Standish, John Alden, George Soule, Constant Southworth, John Rogers, and William Brett were appointed to divide the land. The action by the General Court was primarily an authority to purchase land, and Captain Standish, Samuel Nash, and Constant Southworth were appointed to make the purchase. The deed was signed on 23 Mar 1649. While the actual grant of land for Bridgewater was made in 1645 "actual settlement was not commenced till after 1650" (Mitchell, pg.25). The Bridgewater lands were divided among the inhabitants “by an agreement among themselves”. Unfortunately, there is no record to tell us how the town proceeded to agree to their division, or how, by whom, or when it was determined what residence or other circumstance should entitle anyone to a share. To view the complete list of Bridgewater's Original Proprietors, click on the PDF icon; the photo icons lead to four early maps of the Bridgewater settlement. John married Elizabeth Hayward on 20 Oct 1646 in East Bridgewater. There are no records of children’ births, and he had no issue who survived him. He left a large estate which he gave by deeds to his nephew John, "son of his brother William of Braintree, and to the sons of his said nephew." - LifeSketch: AMES The records losses brought about by war and fire make researching this Ames line quite challenging. Little survives to confirm the early, unreferenced claims of Ames genealogists. Mitchell's History of Bridgewater stated in 1840 that: Claim #1 False: John and William Ames were sons of Richard [sic] Ames, of Bruton, Somersetshire, England; the former settled in W.B., and the latter in Braintree, here in New England, as early as 1640. Claim #1 ?: John Ames above came from Duxbury to this town; was an original proprietor here, and m. Elizabeth Hayward 1645; she was probably sister of Thomas Hayward; they had no children, but he had a large estate which he gave by deeds in 1697 to his nephew John, son of his brother William, of Braintree, and to the sons of his said nephew. He d. a. 1698.... No deeds supporting this have survived. Subsequent genealogists, such as James Savage in 1860 and Charles Henry Pope in 1900, did little more than paraphrase Mitchell. Pope added error to his sketch by confusing Braintree's William Ames with a man of the same name in Cambridge. No direct evidence links the Bruton, Somerset, Ames family to the New England immigrants. An Ames family did flourish in Bruton for about a century, beginning in the mid- 1500s. If all the Ames entries in the Bruton parish registers belong to closely related people, then John(A) Ames might have had brothers Thomas, William and Robert, and they all might have been sons of John (B) Ames. The evidence is insufficient to say one way or the other. JOHN AMES, baptized at Bruton, Somersetshire, England, 2 May 1569; buried there 19 February 1632/3; married at Bruton 12 October 1601 CHRISTIAN BROWNE, baptized at Bruton 13 July 1583, buried there 4 May 1625, daughter of WILLIAM BROWNE. The loss of Somerset's pre- 1858 wills to the German bombing in 1942 makes further investigation of this family difficult. Beyond the Bruton parish register entries, nothing further is known of them. No search was made for this family in manorial records. Perhaps there is something in the English court records, because on 3 March 1644/5 in a Plymouth court, James Torrey deposed that Thomas Hayward had told him that John Ames "came out of England for stealing a calf." Generational numbers are not used for this English family since there is no demonstrated link across the Atlantic. Children, surname AMES: i. THOMAS, baptized at Bruton, Somersetshire, 6 August 1602; buried there 8 August 1602. ii. HENRY, baptized at Bruton, Somersetshire, 25 July 1603; a man of that name buried there 13 October 1689; married first ; perhaps married there second, late in life, 24 October 1675 JONE PENNY. Child with first wife, surname Ames: iii. WILLIAM, baptized at Bruton, Somersetshire, 6 October 1605; perhaps the New England immigrant. iv. JOHN, baptized at Bruton, Somersetshire, 2 December 1610; living at West Bridgewater, Mass., September 1698 when his nephew was called "Jr." ; married, evidently in Duxbury, Mass., 20 October 16455 ELIZABETH2 HAYWARD, born say 1628, died before the 1705 will of Peter Town.6 No children. v. MARY, baptized at Bruton, Somersetshire, 1 April 1613; buried there 5 October 1703; married there 20 October 1637 JOHN BENEMAN. Smith, Dean Crawford, and Melinde Lutz Sanborn. The Ancestry of Eva Belle Kempton 1878-1908. (Boston, assachusetts: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1996-2008), III:40+ Ann Theopold Chaplin, Descendants of William Ames of Braintree, Massachusetts (Boston, 2004) 'NEHGR 16 [July 1862]:255 repeats this assertion that William and John were sons of Richard, even though the Bruton parish registers show only sons William and John born to John Ames. The remainder of the NEHGR article creditably reports the life of Dr. Nathaniel Ames, and his brother, Fisher Ames, "...one of the most brilliant men this country ever produced." Nahum Mitchell, History of The Early Settlement of Bridgewater in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, Including an Extensive Family Register (Boston, 1840, reprinted Baltimore Md.: Gateway Press, Inc., 1970), 99.

- LifeSketch: (1) VIEW BIOGRAPHICAL ITEMS IN STORIES (MEMORIES) FOR THIS RECORD, KNZ6-Y9K. ORIGIN, INCLUDING MAIDEN NAME OF HANNAH , WIFE OF WILLIAM AMES, IS UNKNOWN. - (2) BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF WILLIAM & HANNAH AMES: It is believed that this Wiliam Ames probably was a son of John and Cyrprian (Brown) Ames of Bruton, Somerset, England, where a William Ames was baptized/christened on 6 Oct 1605. There are speculations as to when he emigrated to New England, but the actual year cannot be verified from any of the passenger lists available. His brother John settled in Bridgewater in the Plymouth Colony and William may have been there originally, but he was in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony as early as 1641. His occupation is listed as ironworker and possibly he was drawn to Braintree by learning of plans for John Winthroop, Jr. to start an iron works (smelter) there. He was admitted a freeman in Braintree on 26 May 1647. In about 1640 he was married to Hannah, whose origin and maiden name have not yet been verifiably identified. They had six children: Hannah in 1641, Rebecca in 1642, Lydia in 1645, John in 1647, Sarah in 1650 and Deliverence in 1653. There is confusion as to the date of his death in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony, due to the way the date was entered into the Braintree town records and to misunderstanding the calendaring system in existence at that time. Prior to 1752, the new year began on March 25. So a date for an event in January, February & early March would be recorded as part of the prior year, while today it would be recorded as part of the new year. The date of his death according to the Braintree town records is listed as: "William Ames dyed the 11th mo 1, 1653" Another record states that his death was "just one month, five days after birth of his dau Deliverence," and Deliverance Ames was born on 6 Dec 1653. This appears to indicate a likely date of death of 11 Jan 1653/1654 for William Ames. The widow of William Ames, Mrs. Hannah Ames, was named Administratrix of his estate on 6 Mar 1653/1654 The inventory of the estate was valued at £45 11/.6 . The widow Hannah subsequently was married to John Heyden (or Heiden) by Governor Elliott on 6 April 1660. Various dates are suggested for her date of death, but she probably died on 31 Jan 1702/1703 in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts. !"Ames" derived from the French word "Amie", a friend or beloved, or the Hebrew "Amos", a burden.!John and William Ames were sons of Richard Ames of Bruton Somersetshire, England. William settled in Braintree. Came to America in 1635, age 30. We do not know where William lived or what he did for the first three years after landing in America. An ironworker. (A highly skilled craftsman who could smelt his own iron from bog ore and cast such massive pieces as cannons and anchors or forge the delicately wrought grilles and railings that ornament the finer colonial homes. With hammer and anvil only, he made tools for all trades, elaborate locks, latches, hinges and chains. Sometimes so valuable in the colonies that they were offered free grants of land.) Ames became involved with John Winthrop in a business of obtaining this bog ore.!Ames memorial window in Bruton, Somerset: "To the Glory of God and in memory of John and William Ames, who migrated to America from Bruton in 1635 & 1638. Ames house in Bruton built 1633, now called Pear Tree Cottage.

- LifeSketch: Roger Bigod (died 1107) was a Norman knight who travelled to England in the Norman Conquest. He held great power in East Anglia, and five of his descendants were earls of Norfolk. He was also known as Roger Bigot, appearing as such as a witness to the Charter of Liberties of Henry I of England. Biography Roger came from a fairly obscure family of poor knights in Normandy. Robert le Bigot, certainly a relation of Roger's, possibly his father, acquired an important position in the household of William, Duke of Normandy (later William I of England), due, the story goes, to his disclosure to the duke of a plot by the duke's cousin William Werlenc. Both Roger and Robert may have fought at the Battle of Hastings, and afterwards they were rewarded with a substantial estate in East Anglia. The Domesday Book lists Roger as holding six lordships in Essex, 117 in Suffolk and 187 in Norfolk. Bigod's (Bigot) base was in Thetford, Norfolk, then the see of the bishop, where he founded a priory later donated to the abbey at Cluny. In 1101 he further consolidated his power when Henry I granted him licence to build a castle at Framlingham, which became the family seat of power until their downfall in 1307. Another of his castles was Bungay Castle, also in Suffolk. In 1069 he, Robert Malet and Ralph de Gael (then Earl of Norfolk), defeated Sweyn Estrithson (Sweyn II) of Denmark near Ipswich. After Ralph de Gael's fall in 1074, Roger was appointed sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk, and acquired many of the dispossessed earl's estates. For this reason he is sometimes counted as Earl of Norfolk, but he probably was never actually created earl. (His son Hugh acquired the title earl of Norfolk in 1141.) He acquired further estates through his influence in local law courts as sheriff and great lord of the region. In the Rebellion of 1088 he joined other barons in England against William II, whom they hoped to depose in favour of Robert Curthose, Duke of Normandy. He seems to have lost his lands after the rebellion had failed, but regained them after reconciling with the king. In 1100, Robert Bigod (Bigot) was one of the witnesses recorded on the Charter of Liberties, King Henry I's coronation promises later to influence the Magna Carta of 1215. In 1101 there was another attempt to bring in Robert of Normandy by removing King Henry, but this time Roger Bigod stayed loyal to the king. He died on 9 September 1107 and is buried in Norwich. Upon his death there was a dispute over his burial place between the Bishop of Norwich, Herbert Losinga, and the monks at Thetford Priory, founded by Bigod. The monks claimed Roger's body, along with those of his family and successors, had been left to them by Roger for burial in the priory in Roger's foundation charter (as was common practice at the time). The bishop of Norwich stole the body in the middle of the night and had him buried in the new cathedral he had built in Norwich. For some time he was thought to have two wives, Adelaide/Adeliza and Alice/Adeliza de Tosny. It is now believed these were the same woman, Adeliza (Alice) de Tosny (Toeni, Toeny). She was the sister and coheiress of William de Tosny, Lord of Belvoir. He was succeeded by his eldest son, 1. William Bigod, and, after William drowned in the sinking of the White Ship, by his second son, 2. Hugh Bigod, 1st Earl of Norfolk. He also had three daughters: 3. Gunnor, who married Robert fitz Swein of Essex, Lord of Rayleigh; 4. Cecily, who married William d'Aubigny "Brito"; and 5. Maud, who married William d'Aubigny "Pincerna", and was mother to William d'Aubigny, 1st Earl of Arundel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Bigod_of_Norfolk
