- Father: Pippin VON ITALIEN
- Birth: 797, Bohain-en-Vermandois, Aisne, Austrasia, Francia
- Also known as: Bernard of Italy, King of the Lombards
- Title Of Nobility: König in Italien
- illegitime son of Pippin??: (Date and Place unknown)
- Note: In 813 his grandfather made him the successor of his father, who died in 810, at the Reichstag in Aachen.]
- Clan Name: House of Carolingian
- LifeSketch: Bernard was the illegitimate son of Pepin I, King of the Lombards, and grandson of Charlemagne. He was born in 797 in Vermandois, Picardy, Francia. His father never married and the name of Bernard's mother is not known with certainty. His father died in 810 and his grandfather, Charlemagne, installed Bernard as King of the Lombards. Bernard married Cinigunde or Cunigunda of Laon sometime prior to 817 for in 817 they had a son, Pepin of Vermandois. Bernard was King of Lombardy but Italy was still part of the empire of Charlemagne. Bernard's uncle Louis the Pious was promoted to Co-emperor with Charlemagne in 813 and became sole Emperor of the Romans (Holy Roman Emperor) upon Charlemagne's death in 814. Bernard did not like being 'under' Louis. Seeking independence from the Frankish empire Bernard raised an army against his uncle. Learning of this Louis the Pious took immediate action. Bernard surrendered and was taken to Aachen where he was tried, found guilty of treason and condemned to death. Louis commuted the death sentence to blinding; While Louis may not have intended to execute Bernard, he died two days later on 17 April 818, as a result of the blinding. The Kingdom of Italy was reabsorbed into the Frankish empire, and bestowed upon Bernard's cousin Lothair I. ----------------------------------------------------------------- “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “BERNARD, King of Italy, 812/13-817, illegitimate son, born about 797. He married CUNEGONDE ___. They had one son, [Count] Pépin (or Pippin). In 817 Emperor Louis divided the administration of the Empire; his eldest son Lothair was given Italy with the title of emperor. Bernard, though apparently not dispossessed, was not included. Bernard revolted against Louis, with the support of several of his father's Frankish followers in Italy. The revolt failed, and Louis had Bernard tried at Aachen and blinded. BERNARD, King of Italy, died 17 April 818. In 835 his widow, Cunegonde, founded the monastery of Santo Alessandro of Parma (date of her charter). Affo Storia della Città di Parma 1 (1792): 283-285 (charter of Cunigonde, widow of King Bernard: "Ideo ego in Dei nomine Cunicunda relicta quondam Bernardi inclite regis, cogitans pro mercedem & remedium anime seniori meo Bernardi vel mea, seu filio meo Pippino, ... - LifeSketch: From Wikipedia Berthar (also Bertharius or Berchar) was the mayor of the palace of Neustria and Burgundy from 686 to 687. He was the successor of Waratton, whose daughter Anstrude he had married. Unlike Waratton, however, Berthar did not have peace with Pepin of Heristal. In 687, Pepin defeated him and Theuderic III at Tertry in the Vermandois. Many fled to the nearby abbeys of Péronne and Saint-Quentin. Berthar and Theuderic III withdrew themselves to Paris. Pepin followed them and eventually forced a peace treaty with the condition that Berthar leave his office. In the ensuing quarrels, Berthar killed his mother-in-law Ansfled. Berthar fled. His wife married Pepin's eldest son Drogo, duke of Champagne, and Pepin became the mayor of the palace of Neustria and Burgundy without opposition. Berthar died in either the Autumn of 688 or early 689.

- Father: Sigebert III King of Austrasia
- Mother: Chimnechilde of Bourgogne
- Birth: 652, Metz, Kingdom of Austrasia, Gaul, Frankish Empire
- Also known as: Bilichildis, Bilichilde, or Blithilde
- Murdered in the Forest near Loges, Chelles, Kingdom of Neustria by Bodilo: She was pregnant at the time
- LifeSketch: Bilichild (also Bilichildis, Bilichilde, or Blithilde) was the wife of the Frankish king of Neustria and Burgundy Childeric II. The two were married in 668 despite the opposition of the Bishop Leodegar. Bilichild was a daughter of King Sigebert III and Queen Chimnechild of Burgundy and granddaughter of King Dagobert I and his concubine Ragnétrude. Her siblings were Dagobert II and Childebert the Adopted. Children of Bilichild and her husband were Prince Dagobert and King Chilperic II. Childeric became sole king of the Franks in 673. While on a hunting trip in the Forest of Lognes, near Livry, in Picardy, Bilichild, along with her husband and her eldest son, the five-year-old Dagobert, were assassinated by a band of dissatisfied Neustrians—Bodilo, Amalbert and Ingobert. The royal trio was buried in Saint-Germain-des-Prés at Paris, where her tomb and that of Dagobert were discovered in 1645 and pilfered. On May 26, the memorial entry for Count Billing, who died that day, can be found in the necrology of the St. Michael Church in Lüneburg. NO further messages about him have survived. For the first time in the house chronicle of the St. Michael monastery in Lüneburg, which was made between 1229 and 1233, it is said that Count Billung was the father of Hermann Billung. - Birth: ABT 440, Königreich der Thüringer
- Also known as: sometimes shortened to Bisin
- Also known as: Bysinus, Bessinus or Bissinus in Frankish sources
- Title Of Nobility: King of the Thüringians
- LifeSketch: This Bisinus was married to a Longobard named Menia. He had three sons: Herminafried, Baderich, and Berthachar, who succeeded him in different parts of the empire that was conquered by the Franks a little later (531/34). He also had a daughter, Raicunda, who was married to the Longobard king Wacho Under his leadership, the Thuringian Empire strove towards the height of its power, which he sought to consolidate through a targeted marriage policy. His daughter Radegunde married the Lombard king Wacho, his son Herminafrid the niece of the Ostrogoth king Theodoric. His sister Basena was the wife of the Frankish king Childerich I and mother Clovis I Bisinius divided the kingdom among his sons. Dahn Felix: page 370 -- Bisin's wife was the Lombard noblewoman Menia, who after his death married the father of the future Lombard king Audoin. Bisin's daughter Radegunde became the wife of the Longobard king Wacho, his eldest son Herminafried even married an AMALERIN, Theoderich's niece Amalaberga, whereby Theoderic expressly acknowledged the Thuringian origin from a stirps regia. The alliance system with Ostrogoths and Lombards, which becomes recognizable in these marriage connections, points to the Thuringian area of interest in the Danube region, but may also have served to protect the empire against the Frankish expansion. After Bisin's death, his two brothers Baderich and Bertachar ruled as kings alongside Herminafried. It is not clear from the sparse reports whether this was a genuine sovereign rule or rather a division of the empire [318 Gregor von Tours, Historiarum libri decem III. 4, page 99. Schlesinger sees three parts in it, early Middle Ages, page 322; Schmidt, Westgermanen 2, page 106, 108 suspect that Herminafried's supremacy is comparable to that of the Burgundian system; Schwarz, Stammeskunde, page 180 .. The fact that Herminafried systematically eliminated his brothers, partly with Franconian help, will have to be seen as an invention of Gregory of Tours who justified Franconian aggression Schneider, Reinhard: Seite 18,68 ..

- Also known as: Blitchildem
- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy BILICHILDIS . The Liber Historiæ Francorum records that "Chlotharius…rex" had seven children by "Ingunde", the same six as are named in Gregory of Tours with a marginal note adding "Blitchildim" as the seventh child and specifying that she married "Ansbertus nobilissimus" and by him was mother of "Arnoldum"[218]. An alternative origin for Bilichildis is provided by the Chronico Marcianensi de Sancta Rictrude which names “Dagobertum Regem et Blithildem sororem eius” as children of “Lotharius…[et] Beretrudam” (chronologically impossible if she was the grandmother of Arnoul Bishop of Metz), but commenting that “others say” that Bilichildis was the daughter of “primi Lotharii avi istius”, adding that Bilichildis married “Ansberto Duci nobili in Germania”[219]. The Carmen de Exordio Gentis Francorum names "Hlotharius [rex]…filia…Blithild" and records her marriage to "Ansbertus"[220]. The recorded names of the alleged children of Bilichildis do not have a Merovingian ring about them. It is uncertain whether Bilichildis existed at all or whether she and her family were invented for the purposes of compiling a Merovingian descent for the Carolingian dynasty, an enterprise undertaken in Metz from the late 8th century onwards. Her absence from the list of the children of King Clotaire given by Gregory of Tours certainly suggests that she was a spurious later invention, although Gregory's treatment of the families of the early Merovingians was not exhaustive, as can be seen from the examples of Berthoara, daughter of King Theodebald I, and [Theodechildis] sister of the same king (see above), whom Gregory does not mention at all. Settipani demonstrates convincingly that there are sufficient indications in other primary sources that parts, if not all, these reconstructions may be based on historical fact[221]. Sifting the fact from the fiction is inevitably speculative. m ANSBERT, son of ---. A 9th century genealogy names "Ansbertus…ex genere senatorum", his brothers "Deotarium, Firminum, Gamardum, Aigulfum episcopum et Ragnifridum" and their supposed descendants, Ansbert's marriage to "filiam Hlotarii regis Francorum…Blithildem" and their children as shown below[222].]

- Mother: Delbáeth
- LifeSketch: Boann or Boand (modern spelling: Bóinn) is the Irish goddess of the River Boyne, a river in Leinster, Ireland. According to the Lebor Gabála Érenn and Tain Bo Fraech she was the sister of Befind[1] and daughter of Delbáeth, son of Elada, of the Tuatha Dé Danann.[2] Her husband is variously Nechtan or Elcmar. With her lover the Dagda, she is the mother of Aengus. In order to hide their affair, the Dagda made the sun stand still for nine months; therefore, Aengus was conceived, gestated and born in one day[3]; elsewhere, the Dagda kept hunger, thirst, and darkness from Elcmar during his journey, so that it only seemed to be a day for Elcmar.[4] Her name is interpreted as "white cow" (Irish: bó fhionn; Old Irish: bó find) in the dinsenchas, where she is also called "White Boand".[5][6] Ptolemy's 2nd century Geography shows that in antiquity the river's name was Bouvinda [Βουουίνδα],[7][8] which may derive from Proto-Celtic *Bou-vindā, "white cow".[9] An alternate version of her name is given as Segais, hence Well of Segais.[10] We are also told that Eithne was the wife of Elcmar and that another name for Eithne was Boand.[11] Alternate names of the Boyne[edit] In the Dindsenchas, the following names are given as equivalent to Boand: Segais The Arm and Leg of Nuada's wife The Great Silver Yoke White Marrow of Fedlimid Stormy Wave River of the White Hazel Banna Roof of the Ocean Lunnand Torrand Severn Tiber Jordan Tigris Euphrates Mythology[edit] As told in the Dindsenchas,[12] Boann created the Boyne. Though forbidden to by her husband, Nechtan, Boann approached the magical Well of Segais (also known as the Connla's Well), which was surrounded, according to the legend, by nine magic hazel-trees.[13] Hazelnuts were known to fall into the Well, where they were eaten by the speckled salmon (who, along with hazelnuts, also embody and represent wisdom in Irish mythology). Boann challenged the power of the well by walking around it tuathal; this caused the waters to surge up violently and rush down to the sea, creating the Boyne. In this catastrophe, she was swept along in the rushing waters, and lost an arm, leg and eye, and ultimately her life, in the flood. The poem equates her with famous rivers in other countries, including the River Severn, Tiber, Jordan River, Tigris and Euphrates. Additionally, it mentions alternate names for various parts of the Boyne, including River of Segais, the Arm and Leg of Nuada's wife, the Great Silver Yoke, White Marrow of Fedlimid, the River of the White Hazel, Banna, Roof of the Ocean, Lunnand, and Torrand.[14] In a variant of the same story as told in the Dindsenchas, Boand tried to hide her infidelity with the Dagda by washing herself in Nechtan's well, but when she approaches it, it overcomes her, and she drowns.[15] She named her son Oengus (meaning one wish) because her one desire was union with the Dagda. She also appears in Táin Bó Fraích as the maternal aunt and protector of the mortal Fráech.[16] In that story, Fráech's people tell him to go visit his mother's sister Boand to receive the raiment of the Sídhe. Boand then gives Fráech fifty intricately worked mantles and tunics with animal details, fifty jeweled spears that lit the night like the sun, fifty dark horses with gold bells, fifty swords with golden hilts, fifty swords with gold hilts, seven hounds in silver chains, seven trumpeters, three jesters, and three harpists, which Fráech uses to dazzle Medb and Ailill.[17] She had a lapdog, Dabilla, which was swept out to sea. Torn into pieces by the water, the two halves became the rocks known as Cnoc Dabilla, or Hill of Dabilla.[18][19] Buan[edit] According to the story "Cormac's Adventure in the Land of Promise", there is a well in Tír na nÓg surrounded by nine purple hazel trees. Called the Well of Knowledge, it yields five streams that Manannán mac Lir later explains are the five senses from which knowledge is apprehended. The hazels, which drop nuts into a pool of five salmon, are called the hazels of Buan.[20] The combination of the well, hazels, salmon and the name Buan (meaning "enduring" or "persevering") likely points to a common origin with the story of Boand and the Well of Segais[21][22] Another tale relates the fate of the only son of "White Buan," here identified as a male. Buan's son is named as Baile, loved by both men and women, who falls in love with Ailinn, daughter of Lugaid, son of Fergus of the Sea. The two lovers arrange a tryst, but before they can meet, Baile rests his chariot and releases his horses to graze. There he is intercepted by an unnamed character (likely Manannán in his trickster guise), described as a horrible apparition, approaching fitfully with the speed of a hawk or the wind from the green sea. When Baile asks the trickster from whence he comes and the reason for his haste, the trickster lies and tells Baile that he brings news of the death of Ailinn, who was killed by the warriors of Leinster and that she and her lover will only be reunited in death. With that news Baile drops dead on the spot, and a yew grows on his grave with the form of Baile's head at its top. The trickster moves on to intercept Ailinn, whom he tells of the death of Baile. With that news, Ailinn drops dead on the spot, and an apple tree grows on her grave with the form of her head at its top. The two trees are eventually cut down, turned into tablets, and inscribed with poems. On Halloween there was a poet's competition in Cormac's court, and the two tablets were brought together. When they met, they sprang together and intertwined as woodbine around a branch.[23] Another Buan, named the wife of the one-armed King Mesgegra of Leinster, dies of grief after Conall Cernach beheads her husband. A hazel tree then grows through her grave.[24] In Neopaganism[edit] Modern-day commentators and modern paganism sometimes identify Boann with the goddess Brigid or believe Boann to be Brigid's mother;[25] however there are no Celtic sources that describe her as such. It is also speculated by some modern writers that, as the more well-known goddess, and later saint, the legends of numerous "minor" goddesses with similar associations may have over time been incorporated into the symbology, worship and tales of Brigid.[26] In Montenegro[edit] Boan is a town in north-western Crna Gora (Montenegro). It is widely believed[by whom?] to have been named after the Celtic Goddess, the Celts having resided in the region in centuries past. Another theory is that it was named after an administrative region of the ancient Persian empire. Boan is home to the Serbian Uskok clan.

- LifeSketch: Brochwel son of Cyngen (Welsh: Brochwel ap Cyngen, died c. 560), better known as Brochwel Ysgrithrog, was a king of Powys in eastern Wales. The unusual epithet Ysgithrog has been translated as "of the canine teeth", "the fanged" or "of the tusk" (perhaps because of big teeth, horns on a helmet or, most likely, his aggressive manner). «b»Family«/b» Brochwel was the son of King Cyngen Glodrydd and his wife St. Tudlwystl, a daughter of Brychan ap Gwyngwen ap Tewdr. As far as is known Brochwel married Arddyn Benasgel, sometimes written Arddun Penasgell (Wing Headed), daughter of King Pabo Post Prydain. They were the parents of King Cynan Garwyn and Saint Tysilio, the founder of the old church at Meifod. «b»Poetry and tradition«/b» Powys has been frequently called "the land of Brochwel", but little is recorded of the events of this monarch's reign. Some details are available from Old Welsh poetry, but this is difficult to interpret, and none of the extant poems about this period seem to pre-date the 9th century. Some are from as late as the 11th century. Brochwel is presented as a warrior hero and ruler of wide lands. These sources suggest that he was passionately fond of hunting, and one of his chief resorts was the Vale of Meifod which he made his "May-Abode" or summer residence. On his summer visits to Mathrafal, he often visited the shrine of St. Gwyddfarch. Upon his saintly son, St Tysilio, he bestowed the Bishopric of that part of his kingdom. St Tysilio and Brochwel are linked with the foundation of the Church at Meifod, but none of the stones of the current Church of St. Mary date from this period. The arms later assigned by the College of Arms to Brochwel, and that can be used by his male heirs, are 'Sable, three nags' heads, erased argent' which may represent three beheaded Saxon white horses. Many later tribes and family lines in the area claim descent from Brochwel and include his arms within theirs. Most of the genealogies of these families were first documented by the heralds in the 16th century when the view taken of Brochwel can be illustrated by the following quotation: Brochwel Yscithroc, Consul of Chester, who dwelt in a town then called Pengwerne Powys, and now Shrewsbury (Salopia), whose dwelling house was in the verie same place where the college of St Chad's now standeth. Dr Powel, Historie of Cambrie (1584 ed.) Pengwern was certainly a Welsh kingdom or Royal residence which appears to have been located somewhere in Shropshire. It is unclear whether it was ruled by Brochwel. However, there does seem to have been a tradition that he was buried in St. Chad's College in Shrewsbury which he is said to have founded. Alternatively, some believe that Brochwel was buried at Pentrefoelas in Gwynedd where the grave has been uncovered of a six-foot man, with a covering slab bearing the name 'Brohomagli'. «b»False Brochwel «/b» According to Bede (Bk II, Ch 2), a 'Brochmail' was also one of the defending force when the monks of Bangor-on-Dee were slain by Æthelfrith of Northumbria at the Battle of Chester in circa 613. The account of the battle in the Welsh Chronicles is consistent with Bede, but since it was written after his work the author was probably aware of it. However, this man is clearly not Brochwel as his grandson, Selyf ap Cynan, was King of Powys at this time and described as dying in the battle. References to the subject as 'Brochfael' are probably due to a mistaken identification with the person referred to by Bede.

- LifeSketch: There is not extensive information on the life of Budic I of Brittany, but sources are able to confirm a few details of his life. It is possible that in the early portion of his reign, he ruled together with his brother Maxent of Brittany. After the murder of Constantine, Budic I's uncle and a majority of his family, Constantine's two sons found sanctuary at Budic's court. This attack was allegedly perpetrated by Vortigern, governor of the city of Dubris, one of the most important ports in the kingdom. Vortigern had formed a pact with the powerful Jute kings, Hengist and Horsa. The two youths, Ambrosius Aurelianus and Uthyr Pendragon, were both heirs to the throne of Sub-Roman Britain. It is likely that the contemporary usurper to the throne, Vortigern wished them dead so self-imposed exile for their own safety would be the likely explanation for this move. Upon reaching maturity, the two would travel again to Britain where they would seek to regain their titles to the throne.

- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Caradocus (middle Welsh: Karadawc), according to Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum Britanniae, a pseudohistorical account of the kings of the Britons, was the duke of Cornwall under the reign of Octavius, who became king of Cornwall and died during the Emperor Magnus Maximus' reign. Caradocus was the Duke of Cornwall during the reign of Octavius. It was he who suggested to Octavius that he should wed his daughter to Maximus and unite Britain with Rome through that union. When Octavius agreed to the idea, Caradocus sent out his son, Mauricius, to Rome as to deliver the message to Maximus. Conan Meriadoc, the king's nephew, did not approve and nearly attacked Maximus when he landed near Southampton. Only when Caradocus arrived was peace restored. They dispersed and Octavius handed Maximus the kingship and retired, as Caradocus rallied behind Maximus. Five years after Maximus became king of Britain, he left the country to ravage the land of Gaul, and Geoffrey of Monmouth says that Maximus had left governance of his kingdom to Caradocus' brother, Dionotus, whom he calls the king of Cornwall, "who had succeeded his brother Caradoc in that kingdom." Geoffrey of Monmouth varies his use of the terms "duke" ("dux") and "king" ("rex") of Cornwall, even for the same person (e.g. Cador), but his account consistently presents Caradocus as ruler of Cornwall under Octavius and then Maximus, who died within the first five years of the latter's reign.

She was probably the mother of Sigismund of Burgundy. Epitaph Sceptrorum columen, terræ decus et jubar orbis, Hoc artus tumulo vult Caretena tegi: Quâ famulam tu, Christe, tuam, rerumque potentem, De mundi regnis ad tua regna vocas, Thesaurum ditem felici fine secutam, Fotis pauperibus quem dedit illa Deo. - LifeSketch: Carloman was the youngest son of Charles the Bald, king of West Francia, and his first wife, Ermentrude. Born in 848, Carloman was tonsured as a child in 854, his father decided he would dedicate his life to the church. This was done with the future in mind, to preventing a partition of the kingdom. Carloman was tutored by Abbot Wulfad, a future archbishop. In 860 Carloman was ordained a deacon and acquired the abbacy of Saint-Médard de Soissons. In the following decade he acquired the abbacies of Saint-Amand d'Elnon, Saint-Riquier, Lobbes and Saint-Arnould de Metz. In 865, Lothair the Lame, Carloman's older brother and fellow ecclesiastic, died and Carloman succeeded him in the abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre. In 866 Charles the Child, King of Aquitaine, died. With the death of his brothers, Carloman became second in line to the throne after his oldest brother, Louis the Stammerer. Charles the Bald's fears for the kingdom had been well founded, Carloman resented being forced into the church, by 870 he had gathered an aristocratic following, mostly from Lotharingia and Flanders. Anticipating a revolt, Charles put Carloman's defiance to an end. Carloman was arrested, tried, imprisoned at Senlis, and his abbacies forfeited. Carloman escaped to Flanders, where he gathered a small army. In early 871 Carloman and all his supporters were excommunicated. Carloman was re-tried in 873 and blinded, but escaped imprisonment by fleeing to the protection of his uncle, King Louis the German, in East Francia. Carloman died there about 877. ------------- “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “CHARLES II the Bald, King of Neustria, 838-840, King of the West Franks, 840-877, King of (western) Lorraine, 870-877, King of Italy, 875-877, Emperor, 875-877, son by his father's 2nd marriage, born at Frankfurt-am-Main 13 June 823. His wife, Ermentrude, died 6 October 869. He married (2nd) 12 October 869, confirmed at Aix-la-Chapelle 22 Jan. 870 RICHILDE OF GORZE, daughter of Bivin, Count and Abbot of Gorze, by daughter of Boson l'Ancien, count in Italy. They had three children, including one son, Charles, and one daughter, Rothilde (wife of Rodgar [or Roger], Count of Maine).
