- LifeSketch: Joan of England, known as Joan of the Tower because she was born in the Tower of London, Joan was the youngest daughter of King Edward II of England and Isabella of France, born in the Tower of London on 5 July 1321. She had 3 older siblings: Edward III, King of England, John of Eltham, Earl of Cornwall, and Eleanor of Woodstock. In 1328 King Edward III (Joan's brother) and Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland, negotiated peace, ending the First War of Scottish Independence with the Treaty of Edinburgh–Northampton. Terms of the treaty dictated that 7 year old Joan marry the 4 year old son of Robert the Bruce, David. The children were married on 17 July 1328, at Berwick-upon-Tweed. Joan moved to Scotland and the children lived at Turnberry Castle, in the earldom of Carrick. Their marriage would last 34 years but was without love and produced no children. King Robert I of Scotland (Robert the Bruce) died on 7 June 1329, and 5 year old David became king. David and Joan were crowned at Scone Abbey on 24 November 1331, 10 year old Joan was now Queen Consort of Scotland. As they were both so young the country was governed by a series of regents known as the Guardians of Scotland. Peace between Scotland and England was fleeting, in 1333 the young King and Queen of Scotland were sent to live in France to ensure their safety. They were welcomed by King Philip VI and given Château Gaillard as a residence, they would live there until 1341 when they returned to Scotland and 17 year old King David II finally took the throne for his own. On 17 October 1346, at the Battle of Neville's Cross, King David was injured and captured by the English. He remained an English captive for eleven years, imprisoned in the Tower of London. During this time Joan lived in London at her brothers court and with her mother Isabella of France at Castle Rising in Norfolk, England. She repeatedly, an unsuccessfully, petitioned her brother for David's release and was allowed to visit her husband in the Tower of London several times but did not become pregnant. When David was finally released in 1357, his infidelities prompted Joan to remain in England. She lived with her mother, who was in declining health, and nursed her until her death. Joan and David never divorced but lived estranged for the remainder of Joan's life. Joan of England, Queen Consort of Scotland, died at Hertford Castle, Hertfordshire, England on 7 September 1362 at the age of 41. She was buried at Christ Church Greyfriars in London. King David II married his mistress, Margaret Drummond, two years later. ------------------------------------- Royal Ancestry by Douglas Richardson, Vol. pg 78, 607 ... In 1343 he and his wife, Joan, and his two sisters, Margaret and Maud, were granted an indult for plenary remission at the hour of death .... His (King David's) liaison with Katherine de Mortimer, a lady of London, caused his wife, Joan, to return to England in 1358. ========== Foundation for Medieval Genealogy JOAN of England, daughter of EDWARD II King of England & his wife Isabelle de France (Tower of London 5 Jul 1321-Hertford Castle 7 Sep 1362, bur Greyfriars Church, Newgate, London). John of Fordun´s Scotichronicon (Continuator) records the marriage at Berwick 17 Jul 1328 of "David filius et heres regis Roberti de Bruce" and "sororem Eadwardi de Windesour, filiam Eadwardi de Carnarvan paulo ante defuncti". Froissart names "Ysabel" as older daughter of King Edward II and his wife, adding that she married "au jone roy David d´Escoce, filz au roi Robert de Brus" and recording their marriage at Berwick in a later passage. She was crowned Queen Consort with her husband at Scone Abbey. ========== Wiki (5-2013): Joan of England (5 July 1321 - 7 September 1362), known as Joan of The Tower, was the first wife and Queen consort of king David II of Scotland. She was born in the Tower of London and was the youngest daughter of Edward II of England and Isabella of France. Her siblings included Edward III of England, John of Eltham, Earl of Cornwall and Eleanor of Woodstock. In accordance with the terms of the Treaty of Northampton, she was married on 17 July 1328 (at seven years of age) to David II of Scotland at Berwick-upon-Tweed. Despite their marriage lasting thirty-four years, it was childless and apparently loveless. On 7 June 1329, her father-in-law Robert I of Scotland died and David II became King. He was crowned at Scone in November 1331. Owing to the victory of Edward III of England and his protege Edward Balliol at Halidon Hill in July 1333, David and his Queen were sent for safety into France, reaching Boulogne in May 1334, where they were received by the French King, Philip VI. Little is known about the life of the Scottish King and Queen in France, except that Château-Gaillard was given to them as their residence and Philip treated them with regard. David was present at the bloodless meeting of the English and French armies at Vironfosse in October 1339. Meanwhile David's representatives had obtained the upper hand in Scotland, and David and Joan were thus enabled to return to his kingdom in June 1341, when he took the reins of government into his own hands. In 1346, David II was taken prisoner at the Battle of Neville's Cross on 17 Oct 1346, and remained in England for eleven years. Joan was allowed to visit him in the Tower of London a few times by her brother, but his imprisonment meant that, for Joan and David, no children were born during this time. Joan was close to her mother, whom she nursed during her last days. Joan died while visiting her brother, Edward III, in 1362, aged 41, at Hertford Castle, Hertfordshire. She was buried at the Grey Friars Church, London. ========== 'Magna Carta Ancestry', by Douglas Richardson Pg 734

Joan OF THE TOWER Queen consort of Scotland
\-Isabella of France, Queen of England
- Birth: ABT 543, Toledo, Kingdom of the Visigoths, Hispania
- Also known as: Brunechildis, Brunequilda, Brunehaut
- Title Of Nobility: Queen of Austrasia, 567, Austrasia, France
- LifeSketch: Foundation for Medieval Genealogy BRUNECHILDIS [Brunequilda/Brunehaut] (545/50-Renève-sur-Vingeanne Autumn 613, bur Autun, abbaye de Saint-Martin). Gregory of Tours records the marriage of King Sigebert and Brunechildis, daughter of King Atanagildo, describing her as "elegant in all she did, lovely to look at, chaste and decorous in her behaviour, wise in her generation and of good address", specifying that she converted from Arianism to Catholicism and came to France with a large dowry. After her husband's death, her brother-in-law King Chilperic seized her treasure in Paris and banished her to Rouen. Paulus Diaconus records that "Brunihilde matre" became regent after the accession of her son "Childepertus…adhuc puerulus". Herimannus records her second marriage to "Meroveus, Hilperici filius". Her power in Austrasia appears to have increased when her son King Childebert II assumed more direct control from 584, confirmed under the Treaty of Andelot in 587 which recognised her right to protection. According to Fredegar, after her son's death in 596, she was regent for her grandson King Theodebert until 599 when she was "hunted out of Austrasia". Wood highlights that Pope Gregory I's correspondence with Queen Brunechildis concerning reform of the Frankish church appears to indicate that she still retained power in Austrasia as late as 602. Fredegar reports that she was found "wandering alone near Arcis in Champagne" by a poor man (who was rewarded with the bishopric of Auxerre for his service), and taken to the court of her grandson Theoderic II King of the Franks at Orléans, where she plotted against King Theodebert, culminating in the latter's overthrow and murder in 612 by King Theoderic. Fredegar records that she was the "bedfellow" of Protadius, a Roman, whom she "loaded with honours" and appointed patrician over the territory east of the Jura in 603. After King Clotaire II defeated and captured her great-grandsons in 613, Brunechildis was arrested at the villa of Orbe by the constable Herpo and taken to Clotaire. According to Fredegar, she was tortured for three days, led through the ranks on a camel, and finally tied by her hair, one arm and a leg to the tail of an unbroken horse, being cut to shreds by its hoofs as it ran. married firstly (early 566) SIGEBERT I King of the Franks, son of CLOTAIRE I [Chlothachar] King of the Franks & his third wife Ingundis [Ingonde] ([535]-murdered Vitry [Nov/Dec] 575, bur Soissons, basilique Saint-Médard). married secondly 576 MEROVECH of the Franks, son of CHILPERICH I King of the Franks & his first wife Audovera (-Thérouanne, Pas-de-Calais 577, bur Paris Abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Prés). He was murdered on the orders of Frédégonde, the concubine of Merovech's father. _____________________________ Wikipedia Brunhilda[1] (c. 543–613) was a princess of the Spanish Visigoths who married the Merovingian King Sigebert I of Austrasia, part of Francia. In her long and complicated career she ruled the eastern Frankish kingdoms of Austrasia and Burgundy for three periods as regent for her son, grandson and great-grandson. The period was marked by tension between the royal house and the powerful nobles vying for power. Brunhilda was apparently an efficient ruler, but this and her forceful personality brought her into conflict with her nobles, the church, and the other Merovingians. Her bitter feud with Fredegund, who murdered Brunhilda's sister Galswintha to replace her as Queen of the Kingdom of Soissons (c. 568), lasted until Fredegund's death in 597. Fredegund had Brunhilda's husband murdered, and Brunhilda imprisoned for a period. It was continued by Fredegund's son, Clothar II, who in 613 defeated Brunhilda in battle. After King Clotaire II defeated and captured her great-grandsons in 613, Brunechildis was arrested at the villa of Orbe by the constable Herpo and taken to Clotaire. According to Fredegar, she was tortured for three days, led through the ranks on a camel, and finally tied by her hair, one arm and a leg to the tail of an unbroken horse, being cut to shreds by its hoofs as it ran[193].

- Birth: 70 BC, Tralles, Anatolia
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia Pythodoros of Tralles, also known as Pythodorus (Greek: Πυθόδωρος; c. 70 – after 28 BC), was an exceedingly wealthy Greek living in the 1st century BC. Pythodoros originally came from Tralles (modern Aydın, Turkey). Not much is known about his family. He was a friend to the Roman triumvir Pompey. Pythodoros became the first son-in-law of the Roman triumvir Mark Antony. In 36 BC, Pythodoros had married to one of Antony’s eldest children, his daughter Antonia.[1] Antonia was the daughter and only child from the triumvir’s second marriage to his paternal cousin Antonia Hybrida Minor. His wife was about 20 years younger than he was. The reason that Antony arranged for Pythodoros to marry his daughter was to hopefully gain some of Pythodoros’ wealth for his war chest in his campaign to invade Parthia. However, it is uncertain if Antony ever managed to do this. Pythodoros and his wife settled in Smyrna (modern İzmir, Turkey). Either in 30 BC or 29 BC, Antonia bore Pythodoros a daughter and only child Pythodorida, who through her marriages became Queen of Pontus and Cappadocia. Pythodorida was born and raised in Smyrna.
- Death: 28 BC, Smyrna, Izmir, Anatolia

- Occupation: Duchess of Brittany

- LifeSketch: Royal Ancestry by Douglas Richardson, Vol. 1 pg 88-89; Vol. 3 pg 426 ... daughter of Edward III, King of England, by Philippe, Daughter of Guillaume le Bon, Count of Hainault, Holland, and Zeeland, lord of Friesland. ========== Foundation for Medieval Genealogy MARY of England, daughter of EDWARD III King of England & his wife Philippa de Hainaut (Waltham, near Winchester, Hampshire 10 Oct 1344-1362 after 25 Dec, bur Abingdon Abbey, Oxfordshire). The Chronicon Angliæ records the birth of “Edwardo regi...filia...Maria” who later married “duci Britanniæ” but died “præmature”, dated to 1344 from the context. The Chronicon Britannicum records that “Johannes dux Britanniæ comes Montisfortis et Richemundiæ” married firstly “Mariam filiam regis Angliæ”. ========== Wiki (5-2013): Mary of Waltham (10 October 1344 - December 1362) (also known as Mary Plantagenet) was the daughter of Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault and Duchess Consort of Brittany. Mary was betrothed in childhood to John IV of Brittany, who grew up with her. The betrothal was held c. 1355. She was married to John at Woodstock Palace on 3 July 1361 and they were acknowledged as Duke and Duchess of Brittany; they had no children In 1348, Mary met her mother and sister-in-law Joanna of Brittany. Then in 1360 she went to stay with her sister-in-law Blanche of Lancaster. She never visited Brittany. Within thirty weeks of marriage (March 1362), Mary became lethargic and died. She was buried in Abingdon Abbey with her sister Margaret, Countess of Pembroke, who died weeks before her. The Duke of Brittany would marry again, firstly to her cousin, Lady Joan Holland (1366) (a uterine-sister of Mary's nephew, Richard of Bordeaux, later King Richard II) and secondly to Joanna of Navarre (1386), later queen to Henry IV of England; Mary's nephew by her brother John of Gaunt and Blanche of Lancaster. Mary's statue can still be seen on south side of the tomb of Edward III of England in Westminster Abbey. ========== 'Plantagenet Ancestry', by Douglas Richardson pg 28

- Father: Alfred the GREAT
- Mother: Ealhswith of Mercia
- Birth: ABT 879, Wessex, England
- Also known as: Æthelweard of Wessex
- Also known as: Prince Ethelweard of Wessex
- LifeSketch: Æthelweard was the younger son of King Alfred the Great and Ealhswith. He was born about 880 and died in 920 or 922. That he was Alfred's younger son by Ealhswith is stated by Asser in his biography of the king (c. 893). Asser also provides valuable detail on the boy's upbringing. Whereas his brother Edward and sister Ælfthryth were raised and educated at court, Æthelweard was sent to a type of school, where he learned to read and write both Latin and Old English and was instructed in the liberal arts "under the attentive care of teachers, in company with all the nobly born children of virtually the entire area, and a good many of lesser birth as well." Such education would have started at an early age, before the onset of adolescence Through Alfred's patronage, Æthelweard became a wealthy landowner. In his father's will (AD 873 x 888), in which he is unnamed but called Alfred's "younger son" (þam gingran minan suna ), he is the beneficiary of a vast number of estates across the south of Britain: Arreton (Isle of Wight), Dean (i.e. East Dean or West Dean, West Sussex), Meon (i.e. East Meon or West Meon, Hampshire), Amesbury (Wiltshire), Dean (probably West Dean, Wiltshire), Sturminster Marshall (Dorset), Yeovil (Somerset), Crewkerne (Somerset), Whitchurch Canonicorum (Dorset), Axmouth (Devon), Branscombe (Devon), Cullompton (Devon), Tiverton (Devon), Mylenburnan (probably Burn in Silverton, Devon), Exminster (Devon), Suðeswyrðe (possibly Lustleigh, Devon), Lifton (Devon) and appurtenant lands, i.e. all his father's property in Cornwall, except Triggshire.[5] Since the (late) 890s, Æthelweard attested several of his brother's charters.[6] According to John of Worcester, he died on 16 October 922 and his body received burial at Winchester,[7] where he was soon joined by his brother Edward (d. 924). William of Malmesbury confirms the place of burial, but places his death four years before Edward's.[8] It may have been Æthelweard whose name was entered into the New Minster Liber Vitae, fol. 9v., with the designation clito "ætheling", but if so, he seems to be mistaken for a son of Edward. William tells that Æthelweard had two sons, Æthelwine and Ælfwine, who died fighting in the Battle of Brunanburh and who were buried at Malmesbury, at the behest of their cousin King Athelstan, who was buried there himself only two years later.[9] The connection with this house is prominent in a series of three spurious charters from the Malmesbury archive, in which Athelstan is made to endow the abbey in memory of his "cousins" (patruelia) Æthelweard, Ælfwine and Æthelwine.[10] If Ælfwine and Æthelwine died childless, their deaths would have brought an end to Æthelweard's direct descent.

- Also known as: Cynebald
- Title Of Nobility: Prince of Wessex
- LifeSketch: Cynebald was the oldest son of Prince Cuthwine, son of King Ceawlin of Wessex. Cynbald was born in 585 and had 2 younger brothers, Cedda born in 590 and Cuthwulf, born 592, the name of their mother is not recorded. Cynebald's grandfather Ceawlin was the King of Wessex, however, in June 592 he lost the throne and the entire family fled into exile. Cynebald would have been no more than 6 or 7 at the time. It is believed that his mother, who gave birth to his youngest brother about this time, possibly died in the tumult surrounding the loss of the throne and the family's flight into exile. Ingild was the son of son of Cenred (Coenred), who was the son of Ceolwald; He was the sibling of Ine, King of Wessex, and sisters Cwenburg and Cuthburh. Cuthburh married King Aldfrith of Northumbria. Ingild's brother, Ine, was King of Wessex, his brother-in-law, Aldfrith, was King of Northumbria ad his father Cenred was possibly an Under-King. Ingild himself was never a king. He was, however, a member of the House of Cerdic, and of royal descent, which would greatly influence his own descendants. The name of Ingild's wife is not known, it is known that he had a son named Eoppa born about 706. It is possible that he also had a son named Ealdberht who was exiled and killed by Ine in 725. "It has been suggested that Ealdberht was a son of Ine, or a son of Ine's brother Ingild." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ine_of_Wessex#Kent,_Essex,_Sussex,_and_Surrey Most records place Ingild's date of birth at about 672 and his death in 718. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, p. 42: '718. Here Ingeld, Ine's brother, passed away; and their sisters were Cwenburh and Cuthburh; and that Cuthburh founded 'the life'* atWimborne; and she had been given to Aldfrith, King of Northumbria, and they separated during their lifetime.' - LifeSketch: Æthelgifu (Old English pronunciation: [æðeljivu]), was the daughter of King Alfred the Great, an Anglo-Saxon king of the 9th century. She was the third of Alfred and his wife Ealhswith's five children and the second eldest daughter. She was likely born sometime in the 870s.[1] A Welsh monk named Asser who wrote a biography of Alfred the Great, described her as 'devoted to God through her holy virginity, subject and consecrated to the rule of monastic life, entered the service of God'. She was said to have become a nun as a result of her bad health.[1] Alfred founded Shaftesbury Abbey ca. 890 and placed Æthelgifu as its first abbess. This Abbey along with Athelney monastery (for monks) received 1/8 of Alfred's annual revenue in support. It appears to have housed nuns from an upper-class background. Very little is known about Æthelgifu's time as abbess.[1] In Alfred's will, there is mention of two estates left 'to his middle daughter Æthelgifu' at Kingsclere and at Candover in Hampshire, and the will itself makes no mention of her role as abbess. It is possible that the will was written before Æthelgifu became abbess, or it is possible that these estates were given to her while she was abbess, but they reverted to the male line once she died.[1] - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%86thelgifu,_abbess_of_Shaftesbury

- Father: Ealhmund of KENT
- Birth: 786, Wessex, England
- Also known as: Alburga
- Also known as: St Alburga of Wilton
- Occupation: Abbess of Wilton
- On her husband's death, she turned the college of secular priests that he had established in an old church in Wilton, Wiltshire, into a Benedictine convent with 12 nuns.: 802
- Feast Day: 25 December 810
- LifeSketch: Æthelburh or Alburga of Wilton (died c.810) was abbess of Wilton and an Anglo-Saxon saint. Alburga was the daughter of Ealhmund, who was King of Kent briefly in 784. Also the half-sister of Egbert, King of Wessex. The name of her mother is not known, it is possible she was a princess of Kent. Alburga married Wulfstan, ealdorman of Wiltshire (also known as Weohstan). Alburga's brother Egbert became king of Wessex in 802. Upon the day of his succession Wessex was attacked by the Hwicce, lead by an ealdorman named Æthelmund. Alburga's husband Wulfstan, rode out to oppose them with an army of Wiltshiremen. The Hwicce were defeated and Æthelmund was killed, unfortunately Wulfstan was killed as well. Now widowed, Alburga turned the college of canons, Wilton Abbey, that her husband had established in 773 at Wilton, Wiltshire, into a nunnery, a convent for herself and about a dozen fellow Benedictine nuns. She is considered the founder of the house. She died there of natural causes in 810. Her feast is celebrated on 25 December.

Æthelburh OF WILTON
- Father: Edward I of ENGLAND
- Mother: Marguérite DE FRANCE Queen of England
- Birth: 5 AUG 1301, Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England
- Also known as: Prince of England Edmund
- Also known as: Prince Edmund Plantagenet
- Title Of Nobility: Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports
- LifeSketch: Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent (5 August 1301 – 19 March 1330), whose seat was Arundel Castle in Sussex,[1] was the sixth son of King Edward I of England, and the second by his second wife Margaret of France, and was a younger half-brother of King Edward II. Edward I had intended to make substantial grants of land to Edmund, but when the king died in 1307, Edward II failed to respect his father's intentions, mainly due to his favouritism towards Piers Gaveston. Edmund remained loyal to his brother, and in 1321 he was created Earl of Kent. He played an important part in Edward's administration as diplomat and military commander and in 1321–22 helped suppress a rebellion. Discontent against the King grew and eventually affected Edmund. The discontent was largely caused by Edward's preference for his new favourites, Hugh Despenser the Younger and his father. In 1326, Edmund joined a rebellion led by Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer, whereby King Edward II was deposed. Edmund failed to get along with the new administration, and in 1330 he was caught planning a new rebellion, and executed. Once the new king, Edward III, came of age and assumed personal control of government, he annulled the charges against his uncle. The title and estates of the Earl of Kent descended on Edmund's son, also called Edmund. When this Edmund died, in 1331, his brother John became earl. Though he was officially exonerated, Edmund did not enjoy a great reputation during his life and afterwards, due to his unreliable political dealings. Family background and early years Edward I of England had a great number of children with his first wife, Eleanor of Castile, but only one son who survived into adulthood – the future Edward II (born 1284). After Eleanor died, the king married Margaret of France, with whom he had two children: Thomas (born 1300) and, when the king was sixty-two, Edmund. Edmund was born at Woodstock in Oxfordshire on 5 August 1301, and was therefore referred to as Edmund of Woodstock. Son of the English king, he was also, through his mother, grandson of Philip III of France. On 7 July 1307, before Edmund had turned six, King Edward I died, leaving Edmund's half-brother Edward to succeed as King Edward II. Though not resident in the two boys' household, Edward I had taken great interest in the princes' upbringing and well-being. Before he died, the king had promised to provide Edmund with substantial grants of land. In August 1306, Edward I signed a charter promising Edmund land worth 7000 marks a year, and in May 1307, 1000 marks was added to this. He probably intended to give the earldom of Norfolk to Thomas, while Edmund would receive the earldom of Cornwall, which had been left vacant after Edward I's cousin Edmund died without children in 1300. When Edward II came to the throne, however, he went against his father's wishes by granting the earldom of Cornwall to his favourite Piers Gaveston. According to the chronicle Vita Edwardi Secundi, this act was a grave insult to the king's younger brothers. Edward II nevertheless took steps to provide his half-brother with an income; grants made in 1315 and 1319 secured Edmund 2000 marks a year. In May 1321, Edmund received the strategically important Gloucester Castle, and further grants followed his creation as Earl of Kent on 28 July 1321. Edward II's close relationship to Gaveston had been a source of conflict at court, and Gaveston's execution by a group of rebellious barons in 1312 had brought the country to the brink of civil war. As Edmund came of age, he became an important member of the circle around his brother. In 1318, the Treaty of Leake was drafted as an effort to reconcile the opposing parties, and Edmund – as his first public act – was among the witnesses to sign this treaty. Further official appointments followed. In the spring of 1320 he took part in an embassy to Pope John XXII in Avignon, where the mission was to absolve the king of his oath to uphold the Ordinances, a set of restrictions imposed on royal authority by the baronage. Later that year, he joined his brother the king in Amiens, where Edward was paying homage to the French king. In October 1320, Edmund attended his first parliament. ... Death and aftermath After participating in the planned rebellion, Edmund became less popular at court. He was still allowed to accompany the king's wife Philippa to her coronation in February 1330, but his appearances at court became less frequent. At this point he became involved in another plot against the court, when he was convinced by rumours that his brother was still alive. It later emerged that Roger Mortimer himself was responsible for leading Edmund into this belief, in a form of entrapment. The plot was revealed, and in the parliament of March 1330 Edmund was indicted and condemned to death as a traitor. Upon hearing that the verdict was death, the condemned earl pleaded with Edward III for his life, offering to walk from Winchester to London with a rope around his neck as a sign of atonement. Edward III however knew that leniency was not an option for the aforementioned entrapment utilized by Mortimer could extend to him and potentially be subversive to his own kingship if his father, Edward II truly was alive. Thus Edward III sanctioned the killing of his uncle. It was almost impossible to find anyone willing to perform the execution of a man of royal blood, until a convicted murderer eventually beheaded Edmund in exchange for a pardon. Edmund's body was initially buried in a Franciscan church in Winchester, but it was removed to Westminster Abbey in 1331. Children 1. Edmund, 2nd Earl of Kent, b. 1326, d. bef. 5 October 1331 2. A series of documents relates to the marriage of "Reignaldo comiti Ghelrensi" and "sorore regis Angliæ" including arrangements for the eventual succession of any future children born from the marriage[862]. The Kronik van Arent toe Bocop records that "Alyenora, hertich Rennolts wedue" died in 1355 and was buried "toe Groenendaell" with her husband[863]. m (Nijmegen May 1332) as his second wife, REINALD II Graaf van Gelre ========== Wiki (5-2013): Eleanor of Woodstock (18 June 1318 - 22 April 1355) was an English princess and a countess consort of Guelders by marriage. She was regent of Guelders as the guardian of her minor son from 1343 until 1344. She was born at Woodstock Palace in Oxfordshire to King Edward II of England and his queen consort Isabella of France. She was a younger sister of Edward III of England, and the second wife of Reginald II of Guelders, "the Black". Eleanor was named after her paternal Grandmother Eleanor of Castile, £333 was given for her churching by father. In 1324 she was taken into care by her cousin Eleanor de Clare then sent to the care of Ralph de Mothermer and Isabella de Valence with her younger sister Joan of the Tower at Pleshey. In 1325, there were negotiations between England and Castile for Eleanor to be betrothed to Alphonso XI of Castile, but this fell through due to the dowry. Eleanor was re-united with her Mother and in 1330 negotiations were made by her Mother that she and her Brother John of Eltham, Earl of Cornwall to marry a son and daughter of Philip VI of France, however they fell through also. In May 1332 Eleanor married the reigning Count of Guelders, Reinoud II "the black" (English: Reginald), of the House of Wassenberg, a marriage arranged by her mother's cousin Joan of Valois. The Groom, being quite dark of colour and character, was a widower with four daughters. He was known for having imprisoned his father for over six years. As she sailed from Sandwich, her wedding trousseau included a wedding gown of Spanish cloth, caps, gloves, shoes, a bed, rare spices and loaves of sugar. She was well received in Guelders and bore her husband two sons Reinoud III "the fat" and Edward of Guelders. However, due to her unhappy childhood, she grew nervous and over-eager to please her husband, who tired of her and sent her from court (1338) by pretending she had leprosy. Her husband then tried to annul the marriage. Eleanor turned up in Court in Nijmegen though to contest the annulment, and proceeded to strip down, proving she was no leper, and thus forcing her husband to take her back. He died from a fall from his horse on 12 Oct 1343. After the death of her spouse, Eleanor became the regent of Guelders for her nine-year-old son Reginald. Her regency was official and formal, but she had trouble in getting it recognized, and in 1344, she was forced to resign her post as regent. She and Reginald later quarreled over making peace with his younger brother, and he confiscated her lands. On 22 Apr 1355, twelve years after she became a widow, Eleanor died in poverty in a Cisterian convent aged 36, she helped rule with her son Reginald who quarreled with her for trying to make peace with her younger son and confiscated all her lands. She was too proud to ask her Brother Edward III of England for help and was buried in Deventer Abbey. Her tomb stone had the simple inscription ELEANOR on it, however in England on the south side of Queen Philippa of Hainault's tomb in Westminster Abbey there is an image of her and her husband.

He was legatee in the 1375 will of his bastard aunt, Elizabeth de Holand, a nun at Stratford le Bow. He received various manors and the third penny of Essex and Northampton 3 Apr 1374, he being then about to marry his wife, Eleanor. He was summoned to Parliament 1 Dec 1376. He was granted the office of Constable of England 22 Jun 1377. He was created Earl of Buckingham16 Jul 1377, the day of King Richard II's coronation, for which ceremony he carried the sceptre and the crown. The same day he was granted L1000 per annum to maintain the earldom of Buckingham during his life. In Oct 1377 he was one of the commanders of a fleet opposed to the Spaniards, who were wind-bound at Sluys. In 1378 he captured eight of their ships at Brest. In July 1380 he led an abortive military expedition to Brittany. In 1380 the sheriff was ordered to pay Thomas and his wife, Eleanor, L40 per annum as the fee of the Earl of Essex, in consequence of which he became Earl of Essex. In 1381 he dispersed the peasant insurgents in Essex. In 1384 the third penny of Northampton was transferred from him to his wife's sister, Mary, Countess of Derby. He was created Duke of Gloucester 6 Aug 1385. He presided over the Scrope and Grosvenor trial in 1386-90, as Constable of England. In 1386 he was foremost among the nobles who were opposed to the king's favorite, Michael de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk, whereby Duke Thomas incurred the enmity of his nephew the king. In the "Merciless Parliament" which met in Feb 1387/8, the incensed nobles led by the Duke impeached the king's favorites, some of whom were executed. In 1388 he secured the reversions of Burstwick in Holderness, and the castle, manor, and town of Oakham, Rutland, together with the sheriffdom of Rutland. In 1391 he set out for Prussia to treat with the Master of the Teutonic Order, but was driven back by adverse winds. In 1393 he and his brother, John of Gaunt, went to France in order to treat of peace. In 1394 he and his wife had license to found a college of priests at Pleshey, Essex. The same year Eleanor and her children obtained a papal indult that their confessor may hear their confessions and give absolution. In 1394 he went to Ireland on the king's business. In 1397 it is said he returned to London and asked Arundel, Warwick and others to meet him, when he proposed to them the imprisonment of the king. He was betrayed by Thomas Mowbray, and subsequently arrested by the king at Pleshey 10 Jul 1397, and taken to Calais, where a confession was extracted. Sir Thomas was murdered by suffocation by orders of the king at Calais. he was declared guilty of treason in Parliament, and his estates and good forfeited. ========== Foundation for Medieval Genealogy THOMAS "of Woodstock" (Woodstock Palace, Oxfordshire 7 Jan 1356-murdered Prince’s Inn, Calais 8/9 Sep 1397, bur Pleshy, Essex, Collegiate Church of the Holy Trinity). The History of the foundation of Walden abbey records that “Thomas Wodestoke dux Gloucestriæ” was killed “1397 V Non Oct…apud Callis” and buried at Westminster. He was declared guilty of treason after his death, and his estates forfeited. ========== Wiki (9-2013): Thomas of Woodstock, 1st Duke of Gloucester, 1st Earl of Buckingham, 1st Earl of Essex, Duke of Aumale, KG (7 January 1355 - 8 or 9 September 1397) was the thirteenth and youngest child of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault. He was the fifth of the five sons of Edward III who survived to adulthood. Thomas was born after two short-lived sons, one of whom had also been baptized Thomas. He was born at Woodstock Palace in Oxfordshire. He married Eleanor de Bohun in 1376 and inherited the title Earl of Essex from his father-in-law, Humphrey de Bohun, 7th Earl of Hereford. The younger sister of Woodstock's wife, Mary de Bohun, was subsequently married to Henry "Bolingbroke," who eventually became Henry IV of England. At the age of 22, in 1377, Woodstock was created Earl of Buckingham. In 1385 he received the title Duke of Aumale and at about the same time was created Duke of Gloucester. Thomas of Woodstock commanded one of the largest campaigns of the period. This followed the Breton War of Succession, when English forces had supported John V, Duke of Brittany, against his rival for the Dukedom Charles of Blois, who was supported by France. At the head of an English army, John was victorious, but the French had continued to undermine his position, and he was later forced into exile in England. He returned in 1379, supported by Breton barons who feared the annexation of Brittany by France. An English army was sent under Woodstock to support his position. Due to concerns about the safety of a longer shipping route to Brittany itself, the army was ferried to the English continental stronghold of Calais in July 1380. As Woodstock marched his 5,000 men east of Paris they were confronted by the Duke of Burgundy's army at Troyes, but the French had learned from Crécy and Poitiers not to offer a pitched battle to the English, so the two armies eventually marched away. French defensive operations were then thrown into disarray by the death of Charles V a few days later. Woodstock's chevauchée continued westwards largely unopposed, and in November 1380 he laid siege to Nantes and its vital bridge over the Loire towards Aquitaine. However, he found himself unable to form an effective stranglehold and urgent plans were put in place for Sir Thomas Felton to bring 2,000 reinforcements from England. By January, though, it had become apparent that the Duke of Brittany was reconciled to the new French King and, with the alliance collapsing and dysentery ravaging his men, Woodstock abandoned the siege and accepted a 50,000 franc pay-off from the Duke of Brittany. Thomas of Woodstock was the leader of the Lords Appellant, a group of powerful nobles whose ambition to wrest power from Thomas's nephew, King Richard II of England, culminated in a successful rebellion in 1388, which significantly weakened the king's power. Richard II managed to dispose of the Lords Appellant in 1397, and Thomas was imprisoned in Calais to await trial for treason. During that time he was murdered, probably by a group of men led by Thomas de Mowbray, 1st Duke of Norfolk, and Nicholas Colfox, presumably on behalf of Richard II. This caused an outcry among the nobility of England that is considered by many to have added to Richard's unpopularity. Together Eleanor and Thomas had five children: Humphrey, 2nd Earl of Buckingham (c. 1381 - 2 September 1399) Anne of Gloucester (c. 1383 - 1438) married (1st) Thomas Stafford, 3rd Earl of Stafford; (2nd) Edmund Stafford, 5th Earl of Stafford; and (3rd) William Bourchier, Count of Eu. Her son by 3rd marriage, John Bourchier, 1st Baron Berners, was grandfather of Richard Neville, 2nd Baron Latimer of Snape. Richard's granddaughter, Anne Dawney, was ancestress of Zachary Taylor, 12th President of the U.S.A. Joan (1384 - 16 August 1400) married Gilbert Talbot, 5th Lord Talbot (1383-1419). Died in childbirth. Isabel (12 March 1385/1386 - April 1402) Philippe (c. 1388) Died young As he was attainted as a traitor, his dukedom of Gloucester was forfeit. The title Earl of Buckingham was inherited by his son, who however died only two years later in 1399. Thomas of Woodstock's eldest daughter, Anne, married into the powerful Stafford family, who were Earls of Stafford. Her son, Humphrey Stafford was created Duke of Buckingham in 1444 and also inherited part of the de Bohun estates. The other part of these estates - including the Earldom of Hereford, which had belonged to Mary de Bohun and had then become incorporated into the holdings of the House of Lancaster - became a matter of contention in the latter 15th century. The House of Lancaster had ruled England as kings from 1399 to 1461. When Henry VI was deposed by Edward IV of the House of York, Edward appropriated that half into the Crown property. Humphrey's grandson Henry Stafford, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, however claimed those lands should have devolved to him instead. Unsuccessful under Edward, he was awarded these lands by Richard III, pending approval of Parliament. This was probably one of the Buckingham's motives in supporting Richard's accession. Anne later married William Bourchier, 1st Count of Eu. ========== 'Plantagenet Ancestry' pg 138 & 'Magna Carta Ancestry' pg 120/1, by Douglas Richardson

Thomas OF WOODSTOCK 1st Duke Gloucester
\-Philippa DE HAINAULT, Queen Consort of England
- Father: Richard OF YORK 3rd Duke of York
- Mother: Cecily Neville, DUCHESS OF YORK
- Birth: 10 AUG 1439, Fotheringhay Castle, Northamptonshire, England
- Also known as: Anne Of York, Duchess Of Exeter, Princess Of England
- Also known as: Anne of York Duchess of Exeter
- Also known as: Anne of York
- Clan Name: House of York
- Title Of Nobility: Duchess of Exeter
- LifeSketch: Anne of York, Duchess of Exeter (10 August 1439 – 14 January 1476) was the first child and eldest surviving daughter of Richard, 3rd Duke of York, and Cecily Neville. She was thus the eldest sister of Kings Edward IV (1461-1483) and Richard III (1483-1485); and of Edmund, Earl of Rutland, Elizabeth of York, Duchess of Suffolk, Margaret, Duchess of Burgundy and of George Plantagenet, 1st Duke of Clarence. Anne married twice and divorced her first husband: First marriage: In 1447 aged eight years old, Anne was married to Henry Holland, 3rd Duke of Exeter (1430-1475). During the Wars of the Roses Exeter sided with the House of Lancaster against his wife's family the House of York. Exeter was a commander at the great Lancastrian victories at the Battle of Wakefield and Second Battle of St Albans. He was also a commander at the Lancastrian defeat at the Battle of Towton. He fled to the Kingdom of Scotland after the battle, and then joined Margaret of Anjou in her exile in France, queen consort of the Lancastrian King Henry VI. On 4 March 1461 Anne's younger brother Edward, Duke of York, was declared in London as King Edward IV. Exeter was attainted but the new king gave his estates to Anne, with remainder to their daughter Anne Holland. Anne and Exeter separated in 1464 and divorced in 1472. During the Redemption of Henry VI, Anne remained loyal to her brother Edward, and, in what seems to have been her only intervention in politics, worked hard to persuade her brother George, Duke of Clarence, to abandon the Lancastrian cause. If not decisive, her arguments certainly had some effect and thus she played some part in Edward's restoration. By the Duke of Exeter Anne had one daughter, Anne Holland (1461 – between 26 August 1467 and 6 June 1474), who was married in October 1466 at Greenwich Palace to Thomas Grey, 1st Marquis of Dorset, son of Edward IV's queen Elizabeth Woodville by her first husband. Lady Dorset died sometime between 26 August 1467 and 6 June 1474 without progeny. Grey subsequently married Cecily Bonville, 7th Baroness Harington, another rich young heiress, by whom he had issue. Second marriage: Anne married secondly in about 1474 to Thomas St. Leger (c.1440-1483), a loyal follower of his brother-in-law King Edward IV (1461-1483). He took part in the Duke of Buckingham's attempted rebellion against King Edward's younger brother and eventual successor King Richard III (1483-1485), on the failure of which he was executed in 1483. King Edward IV had however in 1467 extended the remainder of most of the former Duke of Exeter's lands to his sister Anne and to any heirs of her body. Thus, if she remarried any future children could inherit them. Anne died giving birth to her only daughter by Thomas, Anne St. Leger (14 January 1476 – 21 April 1526), who due to the special remainder was heiress to the estates of her mother's first husband Henry Holland. She married George Manners, 11th Baron de Ros, and was mother of the royal favorite Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland. Anne died and was buried on 1 February 1476 in the St Leger Chantry, forming the northern transept of St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, founded in 1481 by her husband, "with two priests singing forevermore". It was later named the Rutland Chantry in honour of her son-in-law George Manners, 11th Baron de Ros (whose effigy, with that of his wife Anne St Leger, is situated in the chantry), father of Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland. A Monumental brass in memory of Anne of York and her husband Sir Thomas St Leger survives on the east wall of the St Leger Chantry inscribed as follows: "Wythin thys Chappell lyethe beryed Anne Duchess of Exetur suster unto the noble kyng Edward the forte. And also the body of syr Thomas Sellynger knyght her husband which hathe funde within thys College a Chauntre with too prestys sy’gyng for ev’more. On whose soule god have mercy. The wych Anne duchess dyed in the yere of oure lorde M Thowsande CCCCl xxv" The arms above Anne show her paternal arms of the Dukes of York: in the dexter half the royal arms of England, emphasising their descent from Lionel of Antwerp, 1st Duke of Clarence (1338–1368), third son of King Edward III (on which basis the House of York claimed the throne), who married Elizabeth de Burgh, 4th Countess of Ulster (1332–1363). Their daughter Philippa de Burgh married Edmund Mortimer, 3rd Earl of March, whose son Roger de Mortimer, 4th Earl of March, was the great-grandfather of King Edward IV; In the sinister half are shown in chief: Or a cross gules (de Burgh) and in base: Barry or and azure, on a chief of the first two pallets between two base esquires of the second over all an inescutcheon argent (Mortimer).

- LifeSketch: "Ingegerd Olofsdotter was a Swedish princess and a Grand Princess of Kiev. She was the daughter of Swedish King Olof Skötkonung and Estrid of the Obotrites and the consort of Yaroslav I the Wise of Kiev." "Olof Skötkonung arranged for the marriage of Princess Ingegerd to the powerful Yaroslav the Wise of Novgorod with whom Sweden had a flourishing trade relationship. The marriage took place in 1019." "Once in Kiev, Ingegerd had her NAME CHANGED to the Greek Irene." "Together Ingegerd and Yaroslav had six (6) sons and four (4) daughters; three of the latter becoming Queens of France, Hungary, and Norway. The whole family is depicted in one of the frescoes of the Saint Sophia." "Ingegerd died on 10 February 1050. Upon her death, according to different sources, Ingegerd was buried in *EITHER* Saint Sophia's Cathedral in Kiev *OR* Cathedral of St. Sophia in Novgorod." --> https://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingegerd_Olofsdotter#Sista_%C3%A5r_och_d%C3%B6d --> https://translate.google.com/ (cut/paste text and read the English translation...)
