- LifeSketch: DO NOT MERGE OR COMBINE JOSEPH JUDSON WITH HIS BROTHER JOSHUA!!! THEY ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON, ALTHOUGH THE WIVES AND CHILDREN OF EACH HAVE BEEN INTERCHANGED. The following life sketch was found on Wikipedia (a photo of the Judson home is also found there): Joseph Judson (born 1619 in Kirby Mooreside, Yorkshire, England, died 8 October 1690) was a Connecticut settler, local official and militia officer. He emigrated from England to Concord, Massachusetts, in New England in 1634 with his father William, his mother Grace and his two brothers Jeremiah and Joshua. In 1638, he and his father and brother moved to Stratford, Connecticut, being among the first Europeans to arrive at that place. Joseph Judson became so prominent in the development of the town and his name so frequent in the records that historians thought he was the first of the name in Stratford. He was elected as a freeman in 1658. He was elected a Deputy in 1659 and served in the workings of the Colony of Connecticut for the next thirty years. In 1671, he received permission from then Governor John Winthrop, Jr. to create a new town called Woodbury and removed from Stratford with other families to settle the newly created town the same year. Judson had a disagreement with Joseph Hawley and the majority of elders at Stratford as they tried to introduce the half way covenant. This led to a major rift which lasted for many years and split the church and the town. Personal life: On 24 October 1644, Judson married Sarah Porter who was born 15 Mar 1624 in Felsted Essex England. She was the daughter of John Porter and Anna (Rosanna) White of Windsor, Connecticut. They raised eleven children. In November 1660, Judson inherited the stone house that had been built by his father ca. 1639 on Academy Hill in Stratford. He maintained a farm on Mischa Hill located in the present-day village of Nichols in the town of Trumbull. His son John inherited the farm and sold part of it to Abraham Nichols in 1696 at which time it was described as Lt. Joseph Judson's old farm and the parcel had a barn on it. In 1662, Judson and his brother Jeremiah inherited their father's iron works located near Stony River in New Haven, Connecticut. Judson died 8 October 1690 and his wife Sarah died 16 March 1696 at Woodbury, Connecticut. They are buried in the Stratford Congregational Burying Ground. Children: Sarah, born 1645, married Edmund Howell in 1688 and raised three children in Southampton, New York. John, born 1647, married Elizabeth Chapman in 1674 and raised ten children, second wife Hannah Hawkins, third wife Mary Tudor in 1699 and raised four children. Original founder of Woodbury. Captain James, born 1650, married Rebecca Welles in 1680, granddaughter of Connecticut Colony Governor Thomas Welles and raised nine children in Stratford. Grace, born in 1651, married Samuel Prudden in 1669 and raised five children in Milford, second husband Thomas Clark and had one more child. Joseph, born in 1654, raised seven children in Stratford. Hannah, born in 1657, married Samuel Wadsworth in 1680 and raised three children in Farmington. Esther, born in 1660, married Benjamin Curtiss in 1680 resided in Trumbull and raised ten children. Joshua (twin), born in 1664, died young. Ruth, (twin), born in 1664, married Samuel Welles in 1688, grandson of Connecticut Colony Governor Thomas Welles and raised six children in Hartford. Phoebe, born in 1666, married Thomas Uffoot (Ufford) in Stratford. Abigail, born in 1669, married Josiah Curtiss in 1692 and raised four children in Stratford. Descendants: Gerald R. Ford (1913–2006), 38th President of the United States, 7th great grandson Captain David Judson, grandson through Captain James. Indian deeds: Judson was instrumental in negotiating or trading with and buying large tracts of land from the Native American tribe named the Golden Hill Paugussett Indian Nation. The Paugussett's had resided in Connecticut as a self-sustaining community for several thousand years before the English arrived at Stratford in the late 1630s. Since the first volume of Stratford land records has been lost or destroyed by fire, no written records exist prior to 1648 or 1650 to record earlier Indian deeds. After twelve to fifteen years after the onset of the Stratford settlement, the settlement had grown so much in size that the displaced Indian Nation began to ask for compensation for land north of an east to west line 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Long Island Sound. The Stratford proprietors agreed and began to make several large purchases from the Indians. Mohegan Hills purchase: In 1661, Judson negotiated with Amantaneag, Akenotch and Ansantaway of the Paugussett Indians for a large tract of land known to the English as Mohegan Hills and to the Indians as Ackquunokquahou. The land was situated between the two branches of the Farmill River and was 5,000 acres (20 km2) in size and was bounded on the northwest by the lower part of Moose Hill and the south with Trap Falls. The land is located in what is now the towns of Shelton and Monroe. This purchase led to a disagreement with the Stratford selectmen and the town petitioned the Court at the Colony of Connecticut to settle differences with Judson over the ownership of the land. The Court appointed a time to hear the matter, but it seems, according to Stratford town records, to have been amicably settled without the help of the Court by the following town record; The Town upon ye 6th December, 1672, sufficient consideration moving thereunto doe grant and allow to Lt. Joseph Judson the peacable improvement of so much land, good and bad altogether lying at ye place commonly called ye Mohegan Hills, ye hop-garden, meadow and lowland on both sides ye East Spraine of ye Far Mill River as high on that Sprayne as this accommodation reacheth, as is the proportion of an eight acre meadowed inhabitant to ye whole bounds, with this provision that it shall not be expected to be all laid out at present but successively as other proprietors. Long Hill purchase: In 1662, Judson negotiated a deed with the Paugussett Indians for the territory of a considerable part of what is now the townships of Trumbull, Monroe and Easton, lying west of the land which the town of Stratford had previously purchased, or west of the Pequonnock River, extending to Fairfield line and from a line crossing the township east and west about at the Trumbull Church, or possibly a little further south, then north to Newtown. This was known as the Long Hill purchase. Public service: May 1661, asked by the Court at the Colony of Connecticut to set the town line between the shoreline settlements of Fairfield and Stratford. May 1675, appointed to a committee to view the lands of Derby, Woodbury, Mattatuck, Pootatuck and Wyantenock. Judson was to measure the distance between place and place and to consider what may be suitable bounds for each town and present same to Court in October next. May 1678, appointed to a committee to view lands between Milford and Derby. Also moved that the Court should order inhabitants of Woodbury to settle permanently within a month or lose all rights to lands there. October 1680, entered signed statement and agreement of town boundary for Woodbury, Derby and Mattatuck to the Court at the Colony of Connecticut. May 1684, named Deputy to the Court of the Colony of Connecticut and Lieutenant of the Train Band for Woodbury. October 1684, named Deputy to the Court of the Colony of Connecticut for Woodbury. May 1685, named Deputy to the Court of the Colony of Connecticut for Woodbury. and appointed to a committee to run the line or bounds between Fairfield and Norwalk. October 1685, appointed Deputy for Woodbury. May 1686, appointed Deputy for Woodbury. October 1686, appointed Deputy for Woodbury. May 1687, appointed Commissioner for Woodbury. May 1689, appointed Commissioner or Justice of the Peace for Woodbury. Military service: In July 1665, appointed to a committee to prepare the colony against attack from the Dutch during the Second Anglo-Dutch war. June 1672, appointed Lieutenant of the Stratford Train Band. January 1675, Major Robert Treat and Major Nathan Gold asked the colony for officers in the army being raised in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Judson's name was hand written into the records by William Leete who suggested that Judson was such a suitable person. The colony was raising troops to fight against the Narragansett Indians during the King Philip's War. May 1676, appointed Captain of the eighty-two men raised in Fairfield County should Captain Jonathan Silleck be disinabled. Each soldier was ordered to have a pound of powder and three pounds of bullets and were to assemble at Norwich, Connecticut 27 May.

He lived in Concord, Massachusetts and in 1638 came to Stratford, Connecticut with the Rev. Adam Blakemand and 24 others of the Massachusetts Colony, (including his sons Joseph, Joshua and Jeremiah) to become the first settlers of Stratford. A meeting house was built and the Puritans soon were being summoned by drum or bell to the 3 hour service. The Judson family was one of the most prominent families in Connecticut and enjoys the unique distinction of having the earliest settlement of Stratford, for over 150 years, represented the town at the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut.William built his home of stone on Lot #2 at Watch Hill (now known as Academy Hill) at the southeast corner of the "Meeting House". After remaining in Stratford for many years he became an owner in the iron works in East Haven. William moved to New Haven where he took the Oath of Fidelity in 1647, after buying a house and orchard from Henry Browning, which was at the southwest corner of College and Grove streets. He was married to Grace Ann Porter (1st wife) in Resided, Stratford, England. She was born about 1597 in England and came to this country with her husband, William. They had 4 children, 3 sons and 1 daughter, born in England. He died on July 23, 1662 and was buried in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut on July 29, 1662. [NOTE: William WAS NOT cremated, but as I do not know the name of the cemetery where he is buried in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, this is the only way I could find to enter him. PB] Captain David Judson House' was built by David Judson, a resident of Stratford, Connecticut, in 1723 . The 1723 house was built on the stone foundation and incorporates part of the chimney of the original house built in 1639 by Judson's great grandfather William. The first floor, now the cellar, is above ground level and contains a massive central stone chimney which was built with lug poles. It is believed that the cellar was used as slave quarters during the early 18th century. Captain David Judson House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 20, 1973. It is also included in the Stratford Center Historic District, which was listed on the NRHP in 1978. According to Geoffrey's account she was very beautiful, and so enchanted Arvirargus that he preferred her company to anyone else's. He founded Gloucester, supposedly named after Claudius, in her honour. When Arvirargus fell out with Rome and Vespasian was sent to enforce a reconciliation, Venissa acted as mediator between them. Venissa cannot be considered historical. She is not mentioned in authentic Roman history; her supposed husband Arvirargus is known only from a cryptic reference in a 2nd-century satirical poem by Juvenal; and it is in any case inconceivable that a daughter, even an illegitimate daughter, of a Roman emperor could be given in marriage to a barbarian without attracting comment. Nonetheless, she and her husband, identified with the historical Caratacus, appear in many uncritical genealogies originating in the Tudor period. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venissa

- LifeSketch: According to Geoffrey of Monmouth's 12th century "Historia Regum Britanniae," Venissa was a daughter of the Roman Emperor Claudius, whom he gave in marriage to the British king Arvirargus once he had submitted to Rome. According to Geoffrey she was very beautiful, and so enchanted Arvirargus that he preferred her company to anyone else's. He founded Gloucester, supposedly named after Claudius, in her honor. When Arvirargus fell out with Rome and Vespasian was sent to enforce a reconciliation, Venissa acted as mediator between them. -- Wikiwand: Venissa

- LifeSketch: Amnius Anicius Julianus (fl. 322–329) was a politician of the Roman Empire. Biography Anicius Julianus was consul in 322 with Petronius Probianus, praefectus urbi Romae between 326 and 329. He is identified with the proconsul of Africa who, in 302, received a rescript (an answer to a request for clarification that Julianus had sent) from emperor Diocletian, which ordered the suppression of the Manichees in Africa, accused of being in contact with the Sassanian Empire.[1] It has been proposed[2] that the Julianus who was proconsul of Africa could have been active in 296–297 and that he was put to death by Maximian on fabricated treason charges; the rebel in Africa should be, therefore, linked to Sabinus Julianus, a usurper in Africa recorded in Aurelius Victor's Caesares 39.22. Family Christian Settipani has tried to reconstruct Julianus' family ties. According to his studies, Julianus, probably born around 270, was the son of Anicius Faustus, consul in 298, and younger brother of Sextus Anicius Paulinus, consul in 325. Julianus married Caesonia Manilia (born c. 275), daughter of Lucius Caesonius Ovinius Rufinus Manilius Bassus (or Rufinius), consul in 280; they had a son, Amnius Manius Caesonius Nicomachus Anicius Paulinus Honorius, consul in 334.

- Also known as: Æthelstan of Kent
- Also known as: AEthelstan of Wessex
- Title Of Nobility: King of Kent, East Saxons, Surrey and South Saxons, 839-851, BET 839 AND 851, Kent, Kingdom of East Wessex
- KING OF KENT: BET 839 AND 851
- BATTLE OF SANDWICH: King Athelstan and Ealdorman Elchere with an army of West Saxons, engaged and defeated a fleet of Danish Vikings in a decisive naval battle off the coast of Sandwich. The battle is identified as "the first naval battle in recorded English history", 851, Strait of Dover, Sandwich, Kent, England
- LifeSketch: Æthelstan was the oldest son of King Æthelwulf of Wessex, and his first wife Osberga. Æthelstan is found living from 839 to 851 and is believed to have been born about 827. When Æthelwulf succeed as King of Wessex in 839, he appointed his oldest son Æthelstan to be King of Kent. Æthelstan served as king under his father's authority and overlordship until 851. He never succeeded his father as King of Wessex because he died before his father. ** IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE: That Æthelstan is sometimes identified as the son of Æthelwulf, and at other times identified as the son of Ecgberht, and therefore Æthelwulf's younger brother. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle versions A, B, and C identify Æthelstan as a son of Æthelwulf (therefore Ecgberht's grandson), while versions D, E, and F make Æthelstan the "other" son of Ecgberht. The chronicler Æthelweard clearly states that Æthelstan was a son of Æthelwulf, as does William of Malmesbury and John of Worcester. Æthelstan appears in charters from 839 to 850. Most of those charters do not identify his paternity, but the few that do identify him as the son of Æthelwulf. Historians and scholars currently agree that he was more likely to have been the son of Æthelwulf and Ecgberht's grandson. If the charters are accepted as legitimate, then he was definitively the son of Æthelstan** [*** THIS King Æthelstan of Kent is not to be confused with the King Æthelstan of East Anglia, who minted coins. These two Æthelstans are entirely different people. ***] King Æthelstan of Kent with Ealhhere, Ealdorman of Kent, defeated a Viking fleet off the coast of Sandwich, Kent, in 851. The Battle of Sandwich was "the first naval battle in recorded English history". The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records: "...And the same year king Athelstan and Elchere the ealdormen fought on shipboard, and slew a great number of the enemy at Sandwich in Kent, and took nine ships, and put the others to flight; and the heathen men, for the first time, remained over winter in Thanet." This is the last record of Æthelstan. Ealhhere met a Viking host again in Kent 2 years later in 853. The Kentish army, along with Earl Huda and the men of Surry, suffered a disastrous defeat in which Ealhhere died. There was no mention of Æthelstan and it is believed he was dead before this battle occurred. Additionally, when his father Æthelwulf went to Rome in 855, he made arrangements for the governance of his kingdom while he was gone. Æthelstan was not included in these plans. The last charter associated with Æthelstan was in 850, and the last mention of him was the 851 naval battle. It is believed he died in 851 sometime after the Battle of Sandwich. His burial place is not known with certainty, however, a royal grave dating to the 9th century was excavated at the Old Minster, Winchester, and is strongly believed to be Æthelstan. There is no record of Æthelstan marrying or having any children. --------------- Æthelstan (/ˈæθəlstæn/; died c. 852) was the King of Kent from 839 to 851. He served under the authority and overlordship of his father, King Æthelwulf of Wessex, who appointed him. The late D, E and F versions of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle describe Æthelstan as Æthelwulf's brother, but the A, B and C versions, and Æthelweard's Chronicon, state that he was Æthelwulf's son. Some historians have argued that it is more probable that he was a brother, including Eric John in 1966 and Ann Williams in 1978. However, in 1991 Ann Williams described him as Æthelwulf's son, and this is now generally accepted by historians, including Frank Stenton, Barbara Yorke, and D. P. Kirby. When Æthelwulf became King of the West Saxons in 839 on the death of his father, Egbert, he appointed Æthelstan to rule over Kent, Essex, Surrey and Sussex. He is styled king in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Æthelweard's chronicle calls him "King of the Dwellers in Kent, of the East Saxons, of the South Saxons and of Surrey". He attested a number of his father's charters as king in the 840s. In 851, Æthelstan and Ealdorman Ealhhere defeated a Viking fleet and army off Sandwich, Kent, described by Frank Stenton as "the first naval battle in recorded English history". Æthelstan is not mentioned after 851 and presumably died before Æthelwulf went to Rome in 855 as he was not included in arrangements for government of the kingdom during his father's absence. In 853 Ealhhere died in a disastrous defeat of the men of Kent and Surrey by the Vikings, and as Æthelstan is not mentioned as present at the battle he was probably dead by then. - Also known as: Aehlmund of Saxe Wessex King of Kent
- Also known as: Alemund
- Title Of Nobility: King of Kent
- LifeSketch: Ealhmund was King of Kent in 784. He is reputed to be the father of King Egbert who was King of Wessex and, later, King of Kent. He is not known to have struck any coins, and the only contemporary evidence of him is an abstract of a charter dated 784, in which Ealhmund granted land to the Abbot of Reculver. In this charter he is identified as Ealmundus rex Canciæ. By the following year Offa of Mercia seems to have been ruling directly, as he issued a charter without any mention of a local king. General consensus among historians is this is the same Ealhmund found in two pedigrees in the Winchester (Parker) Chronicle, compiled during the reign of Alfred the Great. The genealogical preface to this manuscript, as well as the annual entry (covering years 855–859) describing the death of Æthelwulf, both make King Egbert of Wessex the son of an Ealhmund, who was son of Eafa, grandson of Eoppa, and great-grandson of Ingild, the brother of King Ine of Wessex, and descendant of founder Cerdic, and therefore a member of the House of Wessex (see House of Wessex family tree). A further entry has been added in a later hand to the 784 annal, reporting Ealhmund's reign in Kent. Finally, in the Canterbury Bilingual Epitome, originally compiled after the Norman conquest of England, a later scribe has likewise added to the 784 annal not only Ealhmund's reign in Kent, but his explicit identification with the father of Egbert. Based on this reconstruction, in which a Wessex scion became King of Kent, his own Kentish name and that of his son, Egbert, it has been suggested that his mother derived from the royal house of Kent, a connection dismissed by a recent critical review. Historian Heather Edwards has suggested that Ealhmund was probably a Kentish royal scion, whose pedigree was forged to give his son Egbert the descent from Cerdic requisite to reigning in Wessex. Ealhmund's wife is not known, however, he is identified as the father of: - Ecgberht, King of Wessex. - Æthelburh of Wilton, wife of Wulfstan, ealdorman of Wiltshire, also known as Saint Alburga of Wilton.
