- LifeSketch: 28th Great Grandfather--JoeyNolan1 Historical information about the le Fleming family. The Lords of Muchland The le Flemings After the Norman Conquest in 1066 the small manor of Aldingham was granted to Roger de Poitou as part of a much larger holding which included land across much of the north of England. At that time the area was on the very fringe of Norman England. When the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086 Aldingham had been confiscated from de Poitou for his part in a plot against William I, but it was returned to him shortly after. By 1102 Aldingham had been confiscated from de Poitou once again, but before this he had built a ringwork near the coast at Aldingham. Around 1107 Aldingham was granted to Michael le Fleming (Latinized to Flandrensis, "of Flanders") and it was he who gave his name to the manor, literally "Michael's Land". At this point the manor stretched from Walney Channel around Rampside and Roose north to Sunbrick and Great Urswick. It was Michael or one of his sons that erected the motte at Aldingham on the site of Roger de Poitou's ringwork

Her parentage and first marriage are confirmed by a charter [dated to before 1194] under which “William le Gros” gave land at Little Dalby to “Ralph Somery” as part of the marriage contract for his daughter Margaret[2932]. Her second marriage is indicated by two sources relating to Staffordshire, where Ralph [II] de Somery had been granted land by King John (see above). Firstly, King Henry III ordered the sheriff of Staffordshire to permit “Maurice de Gant” to collect scutage from knights’ fees he holds in his bailiwick of the land “he holds in dower of Margaret his wife,” dated [Sep] 1224[2933]. Secondly, the Assize Rolls for 1228 record that eight persons were summoned to show cause why they intruded into “a carucate of land which Alan de Englefeld held, the custody of whose lands after his death belonged to Maurice de Gant and Margaret his wife...the land formed part of the dower of Margaret” [2934]. Alan de Englefield was Margaret’s son-in-law (see below). Several other sources have been identified which name Margaret, none of which makes the connection between Ralph de Somery and Maurice de Gant. Three of these sources clearly refer to the widow of Ralph de Somery: (1) “Roger de Sumeri” confirmed an agreement between “Margaret his mother” and “William de Englefeld” [his nephew, son of his sister Isabel] concerning a grant and exchange of lands “at Bradfield”, Berkshire[2935], undated, but presumably dateable to after Roger’succession to the family estates following the death of his nephew Nicholas (before 4 Jul 1229); (2) and (3) two sets of entries in the Testa de Nevill, Berkshire fees in [1235/36] which include " i.m de i. feodo in Englefeud de feodo de Sumeri et...quarta parte unius feodi Nicholai le Butiler de eodem honore [=honore de Walingeford?] et i.m de i. feodo Margerie de Sumery in Cumton Beucamp de eodem honore et i.m. de i. feodo eiusdem Margerie in Idesleg...et...in Adecote...Watindeden...Stanford...Yngelpenne de eodem honore"[2936], and Berkshire fees in [1242/43] which name "Rogerus de Sumery in Bradefeld i. feodum...Margareta de Sumeri in Bradefeld unum feodum predicti Rogeri...Willelmus de Englefeld in Englefeld unum feodum de eodem feodo"[2937]. Two further sources clearly refer to the wife of Maurice de Gant. Firstly, Henry III King of England ordered the sheriff of Somerset, notwithstanding the order of seisin in favour of "Walter de Everm", to give seisin of "maneriis de Cantokesheved et de Hivis [Quantockshead and Huish]...que fuerunt Mauricii de Gant quondam viri sui" to "Margarete de Sumery" as dower, by order dated 1231[2938]. Secondly “Margaret de Somery” reached agreement with “Henry de Gaunt rector of the almonry of St Mark’s Hospital, Billeswick” on the tithes of the mill of East Quantoxhead, Somerset and other matters by charter dated 14 Jun 1247[2939]. Two more sources are inconclusive. The Plea Rolls for 1233 include a claim in Oxfordshire by “John de Beauchamp” against “Margery de Sumery, in a plea of land and wardship”[2940], and an undated order, in 1237, records “Assizes taken...in...Worcestershire” from “Margaret de Somery”[2941]. Thomas Stapleton made a detailed study of the life of Maurice de Gant in the mid-19th century but all the sources to which he refers are inconclusive regarding the parentage of Maurice de Gant’s second wife[2942]. It is somewhat surprising that Maurice would have married the widow of Ralph [II] de Somery who, although she had proven her child-bearing capacity, must have been nearly 40 years old by [1220]. Stapleton dates the Margaret de Somery/Maurice de Gant marriage to “prior to the fifth year of Henry III [Nov 1220/Nov 1221] when Maurice de Gaunt paid scutage of Byham for the manor of Bradfield in Berkshire to Percival de Sumery”[2943]. m firstly (before 1194) RALPH [II] de Somery of Dudley, Worcestershire, son of JOHN de Somery & his wife Hawise Paynell (-[Jan/Jul] 1210). m secondly ([1220/21]) as his second wife, MAURICE de Gant, son of ROBERT “Juvenis” de Berkeley & his wife Avice de Gand (-1230). Agnes LE MESCHIN of Chester
\-Lucy DE THOROLD of Chester
- Father: Ranulf LE MESCHIN
- Mother: Lucy DE THOROLD of Chester
- Birth: 1099, Gernon Castle, Normandy, France
- Also known as: Ranulf le Meschin de Gernon
- Also known as: Ranulph
- Title (Nobility): 4th Earl of Chester
- LifeSketch: Ranulf II (also known as Ranulf de Gernon), 4th Earl of Chester (1099–1153), was an Anglo-Norman baron who inherited the honour of the palatine county of Chester upon the death of his father Ranulf le Meschin, 3rd Earl of Chester. He was descended from the Counts of Bessin in Normandy. In 1136 David I of Scotland invaded England as far as Durham, which led Stephen of England to negotiate treaties that involved granting Ranulf's lands to Scotland. Thereafter, Ranulf allied himself to Matilda to further his cause. He took Lincoln Castle in 1141, which was retaken by Stephen in a siege in which Ranulf was forced to flee for his life. Ranulf enlisted the help of Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester to retake the castle and succeeded when King Stephen surrendered to him at Lincoln. While Matilda ruled England, Stephen's queen Matilda of Boulogne managed to defeat Ranulf and his allies at Winchester, which eventually resulted in Stephen being able to resume the throne. Early life Ranulf was born in Normandy at the Château Guernon, in 1099. He was the son of Ranulf le Meschin, 3rd Earl of Chester and Lucy of Bolingbroke, who were both significant landowners with considerable autonomy within the county palatine. His father had begun a new lineage of the earldom of Chester. Ranulf married Maud, daughter of Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester and inherited the earldom of Chester in 1128. Three years later he founded an abbey in North Wales, colonised by monks from the Norman Congregation of Savigny. ... Death In 1153 Henry, by then Stephen's accepted heir, granted Staffordshire to Ranulf. That year, whilst Ranulf was a guest at the house of William Peverel the Younger, his host attempted to kill him with poisoned wine. Three of his men who had drunk the wine died, while Ranulf suffered agonizing pain. A few months later Henry became king and exiled Peverel from England as punishment. Ranulf succumbed to the poison on 16 December 1153: his son Hugh inherited his lands as held in 1135 (when Stephen took the throne), while other honours bestowed upon Ranulf were revoked. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranulf_de_Gernon,_4th_Earl_of_Chester --------------------------------------------------------------------- “Royal Ancestry: A Study in Colonial & Medieval Families,” Douglas Richardson (2013): “MAUD OF GLOUCESTER, married before 1135 RANULPH DE GERNONS, Knt., 5th Earl of Chester, lord of Eastham and Macclesfield, Cheshire, Coventry, Warwickshire, Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire, and Greetham, Lincolnshire, etc., hereditary Vicomte of Avranches in Normandy, son and heir of Ranulph (nicknamed le Meschin), 4th Earl of Chester, hereditary Vicomte of Bayeux, by Lucy, widow of Ives de Taillebois and Roger Fitz Gerold, and heiress (and possibly daughter) of Thorold, Sheriff of Lincoln. He was probably born about 1105. She had the manor of Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire by the gift of her father. They had two sons, Hugh [6th Earl of Chester] and Richard. By an unknown mistress, he apparently had an illegitimate son, Robert Fitz Count. He was present at royal councils in Northampton, 1131, Westminster, 1132, and Windsor, 1132. He accepted King Stephen's accession in 1135, and attended the royal council at Westminster in 1136. In 1136 he witnessed the Oxford charter of liberties. In 1136 or 1137 he led a disastrous expedition into Wales from which he was one of the few to escape alive. In 1140 he attempted to capture Henry of Scotland and his wife on their return from King Stephen's court. The same year he surprised the city of Lincoln and manned it for the empress. The king's response was to visit Lincolnshire, where he peaceably renewed a pact with Ranulph. King Stephen left for London before Christmas, but made a surprise return during the festival to lay siege to Lincoln Castle. Ranulph managed to escape, obtained the armed assistance of his father-in-law, Robert, Earl of Gloucester, and other Angevin adherents, raised soldiers from Cheshire and Wales, and marched back to Lincoln, where his wife and half-brother were continuing to resist the siege. At the subsequent Battle of Lincoln 2 February 1141 the king was captured, and Ranulph followed up his victory with sack and slaughter in the city itself. At the Siege of Winchester in September 1141 he initially joined the queen's army, only to encounter such suspicion and hostility that he switched to the empress's camp. In 1144 he was besieged in Lincoln by the king. He met King Stephen at Stamford probably early in 1146, where he apparently renewed his fealty to the king. The king granted him royal manors in Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, and Lincolnshire, the towns of Newcastle under Lyme, and Derby, land in Grimsby, and the soke of Grantham, plus the honors of William d'Aubeny Brito (Belvoir), Roger de Bully (Tickhill), and Roger de Poitou (Lancaster, although that which lay north of the Ribble was under Scottish control). He was also confirmed in his tenure of Lincoln Castle. He duly helped Stephen to capture Bedford town and besiege Wallingford Castle in 1146, but the king and the royalist magnates remained deeply suspicious of his failure to restore revenues from royal lands and castles he had seized. He was again with the king at Northampton 29 August 1146, but his refusal to give hostages or restore royal property led to his sudden arrest and imprisonment He was released after agreeing to Stephen's terms and taking an oath not to resist the king in future, whereupon he set about trying to recover by force what he had been obliged to surrender. Subsequent campaigns led to armed confrontations with Stephen's son Eustache, and on at least two occasions, near Coventry (probably early in 1147) and Lincoln (1149), with the king himself. He did homage to David I, King of Scots at Carlisle in 1149, who granted him the honour of Lancaster (including lands north of the Ribble) in exchange for a renunciation of claims to Carlisle. In 1150, in alliance with Madog ap Maredudd, king of Powys, he prepared an attack on Owain Gwynedd, but the enterprise collapsed after defeat at Coleshill. Some time between 1149 and 1153, he made a formal agreement with Robert, Earl of Leicester, whereby each pledged to bring only twenty knights if obliged by his liege lord to fight against the other. Both earls joined the Angevin campaign in 1153. At Devizes in 1153, Henry, Duke of Normandy gave him lavish grants in the north midlands, including the estates of several royalist barons which the earl was effectively being invited to seize; Ranulph was also restored in his 'Norman inheritance,' which has been interpreted to include Breuil, the castle of Vire, and other holdings once associated with his family, together with comital status and extensive lordship in the Avranchin. During his lifetime, Ranulph founded four religious houses, including an abbey for Savignac monks at Basingwerk, Flintshire, in 1131, priories for Benedictine monks and nuns at Minting, Lincolnshire, and Chester respectively (both at uncertain dates), and, on his deathbed, a priory for Augustinian canons at Trentham, Staffordshire. RANULPH DE GERNONS, Earl of Chester, died at Gresley, Derbyshire 17 Dec. 1153, and was buried at St. Werburg's, Chester. Sometime in the period, 1153-59, his widow, Maud, with consent of her son, Hugh, gave the canons of Calke, then part of Ticknall, the church of St. Wiestan-in-Repton, Derbyshire. Probably in 1158 Queen Eleanor, wife of Henry II, gave confirmation to his widow, Maud, of her wapentake and hundred of Repton, Derbyshire. In 1172 she founded Repton Priory, Derbyshire. - Also known as: Ranulph (Ranulf) III
- Also known as: Ranulph III "De Briquessart" De Bayeux 3rd Earl of Chester
- Titled: 3rd Earl of Chester
- LifeSketch: Ranulf le Meschin, 3rd Earl of Chester (1070−1129) was a late 11th- and early 12th-century Norman magnate based in northern and central England. His father was Ranulf de Briquessart, and likely for this reason this son Ranulf was styled le Meschin, "the younger".[King, Edmund (2004), "Ranulf (I) , third earl of Chester (d. 1129)", Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (Fee required), retrieved 25 March 2009] Originating in Bessin in Normandy, Ranulf made his career in England thanks to his kinship with Hugh d'Avranches - the earl of Chester, the patronage of kings William II Rufus and Henry I Beauclerc, and his marriage to Lucy, heiress of the Bolingbroke-Spalding estates in Lincolnshire. Ranulf fought in Normandy on behalf of Henry I, and served the English king as a kind of semi-independent governor in the far north-west, in Cumberland and Westmorland, founding Wetheral Priory. After the death of his cousin Richard d'Avranches in the White Ship Disaster of November 1120, Ranulf became earl of the county of Chester on the Anglo-Welsh marches. He held this position for the remainder of his life, and passed the title on to his son, Ranulf de Gernon. Ranulf died in January 1129, and was buried in Chester Abbey. He was survived by his wife and countess, Lucy, and succeeded by his son Ranulf de Gernon. A daughter, Alicia, married Richard de Clare, a lord in the Anglo-Welsh marches. One of his offspring, his fifth son, participated in the Siege of Lisbon, and for this aid was granted the Lordship of Azambuja by King Afonso I of Portugal. - Title (Nobility): Lord of Copeland and Baron of Egremont
- LifeSketch: Wikipedia- William Meschin (sometimes William le Meschin; died between 1130 and 1135) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman and baron. Meschin was the brother of Ranulf le Meschin, the Earl of Chester. They were the sons of Ranulf de Briquessart, the viscount of the Bessin, and his wife, Matilda, the daughter of Richard le Goz, Viscount of Avranches. The boys were also nephews of Hugh d'Avranches, who was Earl of Chester. There was also an older brother, Richard, who died young, and a sister, who married Robert de Grandmesnil. Meschin went on the First Crusade and was present at the Siege of Nicaea in 1097. Acquisition of lands Meschin was given Gilsland by his brother, in order to protect the approaches to Carlisle. Due to attacks by the Scots, Meschin was unable to hold it. In compensation, King Henry I of England gave him lands around Allerdale in Cumberland, which centred on Egremont. These lands comprised the lordship, or Barony of Egremont. Through his wife, he acquired Skipton, and the lordship, or Barony of Skipton. Besides these lands, Meschin also was awarded two escheated properties in Leicestershire, some of which had earlier been lands of Roger de Busli. Other properties in Leicestershire were previously held by Durand Malet and William Blund in the Domesday Book. Meschin also held lands in Lincolnshire and Cheshire from his brother. Meschin built the original parts of Egremont Castle at Egremont. It was a motte-and-bailey stone castle on the River Ehen. He and his wife also founded the Augustinian priory of Embsay Priory. Katrina Legg argues that Meschin's main motive for the foundation was to show support for a monastic order that enjoyed the patronage of King Henry I. Against this, Legg feels that Meschin's wife's motives were more probably religious, as she was close to Thurstan, the Archbishop of York. Another religious foundation of Meschin's was St Bees Priory, a daughter house of St Mary's Abbey, York. St Bees was founded around the same time as Embsay, Embsay was founded between 1120 and 1121, and St Bees was founded sometime after 1120. Meschin married Cecily, daughter of Robert de Rumily. They had 1. one son, Ranulf Meschin, and three daughters, 2. Alice, 3. Avice, and 4. Matilda. 5. Another son, Matthew, who was the eldest son, died before his parents. Death and legacy Meschin died between 1130 and 1135. His widow married Henry de Tracy, and she died around 1151. Skipton went to Alice, who married William fitzDuncan. Alice and her first husband also acquired Egremont, after the death of her brother Ranulf without heirs. After the death of fitzDuncan, Alice married Alexander fitzGerold. Avice married William de Courcy. Avice married as her second husband William Paynel, son of Ralph Paynel, as his second wife. Before 1153 Avice had married as her third husband Walter, the son of Alan de Percy. Matilda married twice – first to Philip de Belmeis and second to Hugh de Mortimer. All three daughters were the eventual co-heirs of their father, after their brother died without offspring between 1135 and 1140. Meschin's lands were divided between their descendants, with parts ending up with the Counts of Aumale, the family of the Courcys, and the last and smallest part to the Mortimer family. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Meschin ............................................................................ - Father: Teudon Thyon LE RICHE
- Birth: 895, Sceaux, Yonne, Burgundy, France
- Also known as: LISIARD DE CORBEIL LE RICHE DE PARIS
- Occupation: Religieux à Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, Loiret, Centre-Val de Loire, France
- Title Of Nobility: seigneur de Sceaux-en-Gâtinais en 941
- LifeSketch: Lisiard Le Riche (?-after 941) was lord of Sceaux in the 10th century, knight of the Duke of Burgundy Hugues le Grand. His father, Teudon Thion Le Riche (?-945), was Viscount of Paris. His son Ansoud I said L'Auxerrois (?-956), is viscount of Auxerre; he will marry Raingarde de Dijon, concubine of Hugh the Great, and will thus become guardian of their son Héribert Robertien, future bishop of Auxerre, who will be raised with the children of Ansoud and Raingarde. His other son, Joseph Le Riche, is Archbishop of Tours. His daughter Elisabeth married Haimon, Count of Corbeil and formed the strain of the Counts of Corbeil1. On the point of taking the habit at the monastery of Fleury in 941, he had a deed of donation2,3 drawn up in the said monastery of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, with a clause reserving the usufruct in favor of his son Joseph and of his daughter Elizabeth. In 941 these two children are still young: Elisabeth is still single and Joseph is a novice, perhaps the future Joseph II archbishop of Tours from 952 to 960a. Elisabeth, meanwhile, who will be remarried to Bouchard I the Venerable, is the future mother of Renaud II, bishop of Paris: this Renaud II and his father Count Bouchard gave the church of Sceaux to the monks of St Maur-des- Ditches4.5. The personality of the signatories of the act (Hugues the Grand Duke of Burgundy, Count Thion as guardian of the children - he is either Lisiard's father or Elisabeth's future father-in-law -, Bernard Count of Senlis, Thibaud, Count of Blois, Foulques I Count of Anjou, Geoffroy Count of Gâtinais, Raoul de Valois (son-in-law of Thibaud of Tours), Haymon Count of Corbeil (future first husband of Elisabeth), Fromond I Viscount of Sens, Rainard son de Fromond and who 8 years later became the first hereditary count of Sens, and five other vassals of Hugh) indicates the high rank occupied by Lisiard at the court of the Duke of Burgundy1. The first name of Lisiard is specific to the family of Ansoud le Riche: no other family bore it throughout the eleventh century6. Moreover, Lisiard was very probably in the family with Thibaud I of Blois, because in addition to the presence of the latter at the signing of a family document, the first name of Thibaud frequently recurs in the Le Riche7 family.

- Father: Tiridates II ARSACIDE
- Mother: Soshandukht of the Kushans
- Birth: 230
- Also known as: Chrosroès II Arsacide le vaillant D'ARMENIE
- Also known as: Khosrov II o valente
- Also known as: Khusraw II 'the Valiant'
- Title Of Nobility: King of Armenia
- LifeSketch: Khosrov II (Armenian: Խոսրով Բ, known in Roman sources as Chosroes, died 258) was an Armenian king from Arsacid dynasty. Khosrov II was the son of Tiridates II, King of Armenia, and followed his father on the Armenian throne. He was the namesake of his paternal grandfather Khosrov I, and the Parthian monarchs Osroes I and Osroes II, who were also known as Khosrau. In Armenian sources, Khosrov is often confused with his grandfather. Little is known on his life prior to becoming king. From 226 until 238, Tiridates was in military conflict with Ardashir I, the founder and first king of the Sassanid Empire. Ardashir wanted to expand his empire by conquering Armenia. Khosrov's father had stubbornly resisted Ardashir. After twelve years of fighting, Tiridates was defeated by Ardashir, who nonetheless withdrew his army, and left Armenia. Khosrov participated in his father's military campaigns against Ardashir, who was alarmed by their victories. Tiridates II died in 252, and Khosrov II succeeded his father as King of Armenia. When Khosrov became king, his capital was Vagharshapat. He had two children: a daughter, Khosrovidukht, and a son, Tiridates. In 258, Khosrov was murdered by Anak the Parthian. Like Khosrov, Anak was related to the Arsacids. Ardashir and his son, Shapur I, incited Anak to murder Khosrov, promising to return Anak's domain as a reward. Anak went to Vagharshapat (now just outside of Yerevan), where he won Khosrov's trust, and treacherously murdered the king, along with his wife. The outraged Armenian nobles slew Anak and his entire family, except for his infant son, Gregory, who was taken to Cappadocia by his caretakers, Sopia and Yevtagh, who escaped the slaughter of Anak's family. And eventually became patron saint and first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, through converting Armenia from paganism to Christianity in 301. Ardashir took possession of Armenia, which became a part of his empire. However, troops loyal to Khosrov had taken his son, Tiridates, to Rome for protection. Tiridates was raised in Rome, while his sister, Khosrovidukht was raised at Caesarea Mazaca in Cappadocia. Khosrovidukht's foster father was Awtay, a nobleman from the family of the Amatunik; Awtay's wife was a noblewoman of the family of the Slkunik. In 298, Tiridates was restored to the Armenian throne by the emperor Diocletian, ruling until about 330. Tiridates may have instructed Agathangelos to write a biography on the life and kingship of Khosrov II.

- LifeSketch: Maud le Vavasour, Baroness Butler (c. 24 June 1176 – 1225) was an Anglo-Norman heiress and the wife of Fulk FitzWarin, a medieval landed gentleman who was forced to become an outlaw in the early 13th century. Part of the legend of Robin Hood might be based on him. By her first marriage to Theobald Walter, 1st Baron Butler, Maud was the ancestress of the Butler Earls of Ormond. The legend of Robin Hood and Maid Marian is allegedly based on Fulk FitzWarin and Maud le Vavasour Maud le Vavasour was the daughter of Robert le Vavasour, deputy sheriff of Lancashire (1150–1227), and his first wife, an unnamed daughter of Adam de Birkin. She had a half-brother, Sir John le Vavasour who married Alice Cockfield, by whom he had issue. Maud's paternal grandfather was William le Vavasour, Lord of Hazlewood, and Justiciar of England. Her maternal grandfather was Adam fitz Peter of Birkin. Maud was heiress to properties in Edlington, Yorkshire and Narborough in Leicestershire. She is a matrilineal ancestor of Anne Boleyn, Queen of England and second wife to King Henry VIII of England. Marriages and issue In or shortly before 1200, Maud married her first husband Theobald Walter, 1st Baron Butler (died February 1206), son of Hervey Walter and Maud de Valoignes, and went to live in Ireland. His brother Hubert Walter was Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1185, Theobald had been granted land by Prince John, who was then Lord of Ireland. He was appointed Butler of Ireland in 1192, and High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1194. Theobald and Maud had three children: 1. Maud (dead by 1240), married as his first wife Sir Gerald de Prendergast by whom she had issue, including Marie de Prendergast, who in her turn married Sir John de Cogan and had issue. We know about her only because a later inquisition claimed that Gerald married a "sister of Theobald pincerna", no name is given to her, and no dates. 2. Theobald le Botiller, chief Butler of Ireland (by 1199 - 19 July 1230), who married firstly Joan du Marais, daughter of Geoffrey du Marais and Eva de Bermingham, and had a son Theobald le Botiller (1224–1248), who married Margery de Burgh, daughter of Richard Mor de Burgh, Lord of Connacht, and Egidia de Lacy (daughter of Walter de Lacy and Margaret de Braose), and from whom descended the Earls of Ormond. Theobald le Botiller, chief Butler of Ireland married secondly, after 4 September 1225, Rohese de Verdon (1205- 10 February 1247), daughter of Nicholas de Verdon and Joan de Lacy, by whom he had a son and daughter: John le Botiller de Verdon, Lord of Westmeath (1226–1274), who married Margery de Lacy (1229- after 10 June 1276), by whom he had issue, and Maud le Botiller de Verdon, who upon her marriage to John Fitzalan became the 6th Countess of Arundel, and from whom descended the Fitzalan Earls of Arundel. Following the death of Theobald in early February 1206, Maud returned to England into the custody of her father, who, having bought the right of marrying her at the price of 1200 marks and two palfreys, gave her in marriage by October 1207, to Fulk FitzWarin. Fulk was the son of Fulk FitzWarin and Hawise de Dinan, who subsequent to a violent quarrel with King John of England, was deprived of his lands and property by the vengeful king. Fulk then sought refuge in the woods and became an outlaw, with Maud having accompanied him. The legendary figures of Robin Hood and Maid Marian are said to be based on Fulk and Maud. Maud died in 1226 and Fulke III married again to Clarice D'Auberville. By FitzWarin, Maud had one son and two daughters: 1. Fulk IV 3. Hawise, wife of William Pantulf 4. - LifeSketch: Wikipedia Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus (c. 90 BC – c. 48 BC) was a Roman statesman and consul of 56 BC. He was married at least twice. His first wife is unknown but his second wife was probably Scribonia, at least twenty years his junior, who later became the second wife of Augustus. Biography Early life He was the son of Cornelia (the daughter of Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica) and Publius Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus.[1] Career We know several offices Marcellinus held over the course of his life. First, he was quaestor the same year his brother Publius was quaestor for the province of Cyrenaica. After serving as a plebeian tribune, Marcellinus appears in the historical record as a legate of Pompey in 67 BC.[2] After his praetorship, Marcellinus was appointed governor of Syria for the term 59/58 BC.[3] Family By his first wife he was the father of Lentulus Marcellinus, Caesar's quaestor put in command of his fortifications at Dyrrhachium in 48 BC. By Scribonia he was father of two children, a boy and a girl.[4] The boy was Cornelius Marcellinus.[5] Some authorities, such as Ronald Syme, believed Cornelius Marcellinus died young;[6] however, John Scheid has persuasively argued that he should be identified with Publius Cornelius Lentulus Marcellinus, consul of 18 BC.[7] The girl was Cornelia, who married Lucius Aemilius Lepidus Paullus (suffect consul in 34 BC), only to die the year her brother ascended to the consulate.[8] Marcellinus died before 47 BC. Scribonia remarried Augustus and became mother to his only child, Julia the Elder.
