I have given above nearly verbatim the account of the Cocton and Spine families from Wrottesley of Wrottesley by the Right Honorable Major General From: https://buist-keatch.org/buist/goring/17419.html Sir George Wrottesley and from the Antiquities of Warwickshire by Sir William Dugdale, and after a careful study of the descent given in both the above authorities, and an examination of the charters and deeds at Coughton, the Victoria History of Worcestershire, the Visitations of Warwickshire and Oxford, Harl. Society publications, vols. V and VIII, I have come to the conclusion that Joan, the daughter and one of the coheirs of Sir Simon de Cocton, did not marry William de Spine, as stated by Sir William Dugdale. She married (first) Hugh de Bruley, and (second) Hugh de Norfolk. William de Spine, however, did marry Joan de Cocton, a daughter of Randulph de Cocton alias de Kinewarton, the grandfather of Sir Simon de Cocton, consequently she was an aunt of Sir Simon and not his daughter, as given in all accounts of the family descent. [Historical Account of the Throckmorton Family, p 66] 3 Joan married William [I] de la Spine of Coughton, Warwickshire, son of Roger de la Spine and Unknown.1 (William [I] de la Spine of Coughton, Warwickshire died after 1284 1.)
